The morning was the same morning it always was.
This was the thing Wren noticed first, lying in the distributed-rest state that had been her version of sleep for twenty-five nights: the room was the same, the light was the same quality of early-inn-morning that all inn mornings had, the breathing from the other bed was the same pattern she'd been learning to recognize as Liora's actual sleep rather than road-rest. All of it identical to what it had been before the garden.
She thought: I expected something to feel different.
She thought: it does, but not in the way I expected. Not louder or more intense or more present. Just — cleaner. Like a signal that was already there getting sharper because the interference has been removed. The thing was true before I said it. It was true after. The difference is that now it's out, which means it's not something I'm carrying privately anymore. It's shared weight.
She thought: that's what saying things does. It doesn't change what they are. It changes where they live.
She looked at both ceilings, which were the same ceiling from two angles, and let the morning happen at its own pace. Ira was running the automatic perimeter-sense that served as the background threat-detection. Sera was watching the light change on the wall. Neither of them was doing anything in particular, which was, she had come to understand, its own kind of presence.
---
Liora woke with the unhurried efficiency she always woke with — the eyes-open, immediate-orientation sequence that Wren had watched enough times to know didn't require any warmup period. She sat up. Looked at the window. Looked at the room. Looked at Wren — at Sera, who was the one sitting up in the adjacent bed, since Ira was at the chair by the wall doing the morning-rest-recalibration thing.
"Good morning," Liora said.
"Good morning," Wren said.
There was a beat that could have been awkward and wasn't. Just: two people in the morning after something, taking the measure of what the morning was like and finding it was the morning.
"Bookshop," Liora said.
"Bookshop," Wren agreed.
They got dressed. They went downstairs. Breakfast was the inn's version of the standard morning provision — bread, something preserved, a hot drink that was trying to be tea and mostly succeeding. Wren ate with both bodies in the parallel-efficiency that had become standard. Liora ate with the notebook-not-open that had become the morning default since Careveth, when the practice of not converting every moment into data had started to take hold.
She was looking at the common room.
Not assessing. Not cataloguing. Just looking at it with the specific quality of someone who has started to find that places have surfaces worth seeing.
Wren watched her do this without commenting on it.
She thought: she's doing the third notebook thing in her head right now. Filing a visual observation in the category of things that don't need to become anything else.
She thought: I know what that looks like because I've been watching it develop.
She thought: I know what a lot of things about her look like because I've been watching.
---
The bookshop was on the third street from the market square, which put it in the part of Halveth that served the people who needed texts rather than the people who needed everything else. Smaller than Orvyn's. More specialized — the signage indicated a focus on magical theory and applied arcana, which was either the cover or the actual business, and in Accord-affiliated shops these were usually both.
The proprietor was behind the counter when they came in, doing the thing that bookshop proprietors do when they are not actively serving customers: reading. He looked up.
He was mid-fifties, with the specific kind of stillness that Wren had come to associate with people who had been doing careful work for a long time and had stopped spending energy on things that weren't the work. He looked at her — at both of her, the systematic scan, the practiced non-reaction to the dual-body configuration. He had read about this. He was now seeing it.
Then he looked at Liora.
Something shifted in his expression. Not surprise. Recognition — the specific kind that came from prior knowledge rather than from the present moment.
"Liora," he said.
"Casven," Liora said.
Wren looked at Liora. Liora's expression was the one she wore when she had anticipated a situation and had prepared for it, which was not quite the same as the expression she wore when she was surprised. Prepared. Present.
"You know each other," Wren said.
"Casven approached me," Liora said, to Wren rather than to Casven. "Before Karath. He's the one who offered the documentation arrangement."
Wren looked at Casven. She thought: Liora told me before I asked. She told Wren, in the room, directly, before it could become something she was managing instead of something she was saying. And now the original contact is standing in front of both of them and Liora is still doing the same thing.
She thought: that's the practice, in a different context.
Casven looked at Wren. His expression was the considered-and-patient variety of someone who had been doing this long enough to understand that some conversations needed to happen before other conversations could.
"Orvyn told me," Wren said. "In Vethmore. That there was an arrangement."
"I see." He looked at both of them — at Liora, at Wren, at the specific fact of them having arrived together. Something in his expression updated, the way expressions do when incoming information changes the model. "You didn't file a report," he said to Liora.
"No," Liora said.
"Why not?"
"I decided not to." She said it with the same directness she said everything. "I made the decision somewhere between question seventeen and a garden in Karath, and I've been clear about it since."
Casven was quiet for a moment. Then: "And Wren knew about the arrangement."
"Yes," Wren said. "We talked about it."
"How long have you known?"
"Orvyn told me the same day he gave me the introduction letter. Before I arrived in Karath."
Another moment of quiet — the kind that happened when someone was recalibrating rather than thinking. Casven was, she had the sense, someone who did a lot of both and had learned to tell the difference.
"All right," he said. He came around the counter and indicated a section of the shop that had two chairs and a small table — the configuration of a place set up for conversations that needed to happen away from the front of the shop. "Sit down. There's information I need to give you, and some of it has time value."
---
The Accord, Casven explained, had three research streams that had been running in parallel for the past forty years: Maren's survivability work, a separate thread on mechanism theory, and a third thread that had been tracking Twinsoul confirmation events — the historical cases that Liora had found evidence of in the Academy archives, but from the other side, with fuller records.
"The third thread," he said, "closed last month. We found the fourth case — not theorized, confirmed. Actual documentation, not field reports." He looked at Wren. "That changes the survivability model in a significant way."
"How?" Liora said.
"The previous survivability work was based on three data points and a lot of theoretical extrapolation. Three cases — one incomplete, one ended badly in a way that might have been circumstantial, one that ended well but left too many variables uncontrolled. The fourth case gives us a cleaner dataset." He paused. "It also gives us a baseline for mechanism application that Maren's theoretical model didn't have."
Wren was listening carefully. She thought about the threshold and the ceiling and the internal and external pressure converging at the same point. She thought about the survivability question being a variable rather than a constant.
"You're saying the picture got clearer," she said.
"I'm saying the picture got more specific. Which sometimes makes it less comfortable and sometimes makes it more." He looked at her. "Maren has the full analysis. She's the one who should walk you through it, because the implications of the fourth case interact with the work she's been doing for forty years, and she understands that interaction better than anyone."
"She's coming here," Liora said.
"She'll arrive in three or four days. She was already planning to move toward the eastern corridor — the Accord's been repositioning resources in response to Lyssandria's search activity in the northern routes." He looked at Wren. "Your departure from Karath was noted. You were clean — they didn't follow you — but the fact of your presence in Karath is now in their intelligence picture."
"I know," Wren said. "We left because of it."
"Good call." He looked at Liora. "The documentation arrangement — I want to be clear that the Accord's position is that Liora's choice to not file a report was her choice to make. We asked, she declined. The research she's been doing on her own has been valuable regardless." A pause. "More valuable than a field report would have been, in some ways."
Liora looked at him. "I wasn't expecting that."
"I know." He almost smiled. "We're not always what people expect."
---
They came out of the bookshop into Halveth's late-morning, which was doing the thing that mid-sized town mornings did: full operational, market running, the general sound of a place that had been awake for several hours already and had gotten on with it.
Wren walked beside Liora and thought about the fourth case and the survivability model and Maren three days away and *more specific, which sometimes makes it less comfortable and sometimes more.*
She thought: I have been carrying the not-knowing about this for twenty-five days. I've been carrying the survivability question as an abstraction — something that would need to be answered eventually, something that was coming. And now it's three days away, and it has specific content, and I don't know yet if the specific content is less comfortable or more.
She thought: I said I'd know when I was ready to hear it. I think I was right. I think I'm ready.
"Three days," Liora said.
"Three to four."
"That's enough time to actually see Halveth." She looked at the street ahead. "Not as a threat-assessment or as a waypoint. As a place."
Wren looked at her. "You found the garden already."
"Not yet. I found the direction it's probably in." She glanced at Wren with the almost-wry expression. "I'm working on it."
They walked through the morning market — not shopping, just moving through it in the way of people who were doing something that wasn't commerce but were comfortable in commercial space. Halveth's market had the specific quality of a market in a town with enough regional trade to support variety: things from the northern routes, things from the coast, things from places Wren didn't recognize. Liora stopped at a stall with old maps — not for the navigational content but for the cartographic style, which she spent four minutes looking at with the third-notebook attention.
Wren stood beside her and waited, which was the right thing to do.
She thought: I am learning when to wait and when to ask. These are different skills from what I had in Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania I didn't ask and I didn't wait; I moved past things because staying with them felt like it would require something I wasn't sure I had. Now I wait and sometimes I ask and sometimes I just stand beside someone while they look at something old and interesting.
She thought: that's not nothing.
---
In the afternoon they found the garden.
It was, as Halveth things seemed to be, exactly the right size — larger than Careveth's, smaller than Karath's, with a fountain that worked and trees that were doing something specific with the afternoon light. Liora had found it by the method she found most things: a systematic narrowing of likely locations based on the type of residential district and the age of the surrounding buildings.
They sat on a bench.
Liora opened the third notebook.
Not the research one, not the personal one. The one for things she saw.
She wrote for a while — the lateral coordinate-recording handwriting, describing something about the way the trees caught the light. Wren watched the fountain, which was doing the intermittent thing that Karath's had done, and thought about Maren and three days and the fourth case and survivability as a specific thing rather than an abstraction.
She thought: when I know, I'll know. Whatever Maren has to tell me, I'll hear it and I'll process it and I'll decide what to do with it. The deciding is mine. Liora said so and she meant it.
She thought: I trust that.
After a while, Liora stopped writing and looked at the fountain.
"I've been thinking about Casven's phrasing," she said. "More specific, which sometimes makes it less comfortable."
"I've been thinking about it too."
"The fourth case — whichever direction it goes, it means you're not working from three incomplete data points anymore. It means there's more to go on." She turned the notebook in her hands. "That's better. Whatever the content."
"More to go on," Wren said.
"Yes." Liora looked at her. "You don't have to face a survivability question that's entirely theoretical anymore. That's — that's better than what you had."
Wren thought about this. "Even if what's more specific is that the risk is higher than previously thought."
"Even then." Liora looked at the fountain. "Because then at least you know what you're actually deciding about."
Wren sat with that. She thought about the decision she'd been describing as *not yet* for twenty-five days and whether it had moved any closer to *I know enough to know.*
She thought about D and *be a variable* and the sixty-percent explanations and the things she'd been given in pieces. She thought about Maren and forty-one years and the survivability question and the specific word *survivability* which implied someone had already asked whether the answer was no.
She thought: I have been carrying this abstractly for twenty-five days and abstract weight is still weight, it just doesn't have edges. Specific weight has edges. Specific weight you can hold rather than just feel pressing on you.
She thought: three days will give it edges.
She thought: maybe. Maybe three days is when I know enough to know.
---
Back at the inn that evening, Liora opened the third notebook after dinner.
Wren sat across from her and watched the pen move, the coordinate-recording handwriting, the practice of letting something be itself without converting it.
After a while Wren opened the System interface, because the ping had been there since the bookshop and she'd been waiting for the right moment.
*[Sync Level update: 19%.]*

She read this twice.
*Convergence description will be provided when the System assesses the user is prepared to receive it.*
She thought: there's a theme here. Maren is waiting until I'm ready. The System is waiting until I'm ready. Liora waited until I decided when.
She thought: everyone is protecting the readiness. I should probably figure out what that means.
She closed the interface.
She looked at Liora, who was still writing — the lateral handwriting, something about the light on the trees in the garden this afternoon.
"What are you writing?" Wren said.
Liora looked up. "The fountain. The way it caught the last of the afternoon light before it went behind the building." She looked at what she'd written. "I spent about ten seconds looking at it and I wanted to remember it correctly."
"What's the correct memory?"
"The specific color. The way the movement of water creates a surface that behaves differently from still water when light hits it." She turned the notebook toward Wren slightly — an offering of access, not a showing-off. "I've been trying to find the words for things I usually just see."
Wren looked at the notebook, at the careful description, at the handwriting that was still finding its form.
"You're getting better at it," she said.
"I think so." Liora looked at what she'd written. "It helps that there's someone to say that to."
Wren looked at her. The fourth expression. At ease. The handwriting-shift expression, the expression of someone who has been watched without evaluation and has decided that's fine. Present in the specific way that people are present when they're not performing for anyone and don't need to.
"Three days," Wren said.
"Three to four," Liora said.
"We'll figure out what it means when we know what it is."
Liora looked at her. "Yes," she said. "We will."
She went back to writing. Wren watched the lamp make its steady light. Both of her were in the room, and the room was what it was, and outside Halveth was being the town it was, and in three to four days Maren was coming with information that would make the survivability question specific.
She thought: I am as ready as I'm going to be before I have the information.
She thought: that's probably enough.
She thought: *both* still means what it meant when she fell asleep last night.
Both of her held that and let the evening be the evening.
You've reached the end of this chapter
