The message from Casven arrived with breakfast.
Not dramatic — a folded note delivered by the inn's morning person, passed to Liora because she was the one already downstairs when it came, which meant Wren got the information secondhand when she came down with both bodies and found Liora reading a small piece of paper with the expression she wore for things that were significant but not surprising.
"Tomorrow afternoon," Liora said. "Maren arrives."
Wren sat down. Looked at the paper Liora held out — brief, in a compact script that communicated the essentials without embellishment. Maren had made good time. The Accord's logistical infrastructure was apparently functional.
"Tomorrow," Wren said.
"Tomorrow."
They ate breakfast. The inn's provision was the same as the previous mornings — bread, the preserved thing, the tea-adjacent drink. None of it remarkable. Both of them were doing the thing that happened when people had been in proximity long enough to have established a table dynamic: the small automatic adjustments, the passing of things without asking, the general accommodation of another person's presence without it requiring thought.
Liora was not looking at notebooks.
She was looking out the window at Halveth morning, which was doing what Halveth morning did: market people, delivery people, the first civilian foot traffic of the day moving through the streets with the purposefulness of people who had somewhere to be. Ordinary town in the act of being ordinary.
Wren ate and watched Liora watch the street and thought: today has its own weight because tomorrow will have different weight. Not heavier — different. The weight of waiting is different from the weight of knowing, and today is the last day of the first kind.
She thought: I've been moving toward this for twenty-seven days. And now it's tomorrow.
---
"I want to spend today not doing research," Liora said, when the breakfast things had been cleared and they were both still at the table.
Wren looked at her. "What's your definition of that?"
"Not opening the research notebook. Not reading theoretical material. Not thinking about the mechanism or the survivability question or any of the operational content of what we're about to be told." She paused. "The third notebook is permissible. Personal notebook obviously."
"Why obviously?"
"Because that's different." She looked at the window. "The research notebook is the work. The personal notebook is—" she considered. "The personal notebook is what I do when I need to understand something that's happening to me. Today I want to understand something that's happening to me without turning it into a task."
Wren looked at her. She thought: three weeks ago, Liora organized her emotional processing as an extension of her research methodology. She's now distinguishing between those things and choosing which mode is appropriate for the day.
"All right," she said.
"You don't have to—" Liora started.
"I know I don't have to. I want to." Wren looked at her. "You're going somewhere today. I'd like to go with you."
Liora looked at her for a moment with the fourth expression. "Okay," she said. The warm version.
---
Halveth's streets were doing the things streets did when they belonged to a town rather than a waypoint — the accumulated texture of a place that wasn't trying to be anything other than what it was. Not impressive, not notable. Just: there, with the specificity of somewhere that had been lived in.
Liora moved through it with the compass she'd been developing — not the research compass, not the threat-assessment compass, but the third-notebook compass that was about what was worth looking at for reasons that had nothing to do with utility.
She stopped at a gate in a residential section. Wrought iron, old, with a pattern in the metalwork that was both decorative and structural — the pattern was how it held together, not separate from the function. She spent three minutes looking at it.
Wren stood beside her and looked at the same gate and thought about how she would have walked past this two weeks ago. Not because she lacked the capacity to notice it — [Peripheral Awareness] would have registered it as background detail — but because her attention would have been elsewhere. On the threat-scan. On the next thing. On the ongoing management of having two bodies in an unfamiliar place.
Now the gate was simply interesting.
She thought: this is something she taught me. Not deliberately. Just by doing it in my presence long enough that it became part of how I moved through spaces.
They moved on.
A district of older buildings where someone had made additions over generations without removing what was already there, so the result was a structure that had accreted meaning with each iteration — you could see the history of it in the materials, the way each generation's contribution was legible if you knew what to look for.
Liora looked at it with the considering expression.
She looked at it for longer than the gate. The gate had been three minutes. This was more — five, six, the specific duration of someone who has found something that is asking more from their attention than expected.
"The additions aren't apologizing for themselves," she said.
"What do you mean?"
"Each addition was built to function alongside what was there, not to look like it had always been there. You can see the joins. The builders weren't trying to hide them." She turned the small third notebook in her hands — she'd been carrying it today, open to a page, making occasional notes. "There's a kind of honesty in that. Here is what was built before, here is what was added, here is where they meet."
Wren looked at the building. At the joins.
She thought: she's talking about architecture.
She thought: she's also talking about something else.
She thought: the three years and the mechanism and the mentor and yesterday's reframing. The research that was research and then became personal. The notebooks that were research and then became personal and then became three. The word that was unclassified and then became categorized.
She thought: she's been building on what was there. Not hiding the joins.
She did not say so. Some things are better observed than named.
---
The market they found was smaller than the main market, tucked into the part of Halveth that served the residential streets rather than the trade routes. Things made locally, things grown nearby. A vendor with preserved foods that smelled complicated and good. A stall with cloth goods, another with ceramics in a style specific to this region.
Liora stopped at a stall with small prepared foods — not practical provisions, not road-appropriate supplies. Things made for someone to enjoy in the moment. Pastries, small savory things, a type of preserved fruit in a specific way that she inspected with the attention of someone who found the method interesting.
She bought four things. Asked about two of them — not about their practical properties, about how they were made.
Wren watched her do this.
She thought: she's collecting experience rather than data. She's asking about the making because she wants to know how it was made, not because she's compiling a report on regional food practices.
She thought: the line between those isn't always visible from the outside. It's visible from the inside — from whether the answer goes in the research notebook or nowhere at all.
She thought: it's going nowhere at all today. She's just asking.
They found a bench near a small square with a tree that was doing something interesting with the midday light. Not the garden. Somewhere without a name.
They ate what Liora had bought.
It was good in the way of things that had been made with attention.
---
"Thessavane," Liora said, after a while.
Wren looked at her. "What about it?"
"I've been thinking about what I said — that I was trying to figure out what about Halveth I'd want to remember after we leave." She looked at the square. "In Thessavane, I didn't do that. I knew I was leaving, and I'd already started withdrawing, so the bench was just a place I sat until I left." A pause. "I didn't try to remember it. I just — experienced it and then went."
"And now you're trying to remember Halveth."
"Trying to identify what to remember." She turned the third notebook in her hands. "It's a different process. You have to actually pay attention to what's happening in order to select from it." Another pause. "I didn't know how to do that before."
"What changed?" Wren said.
Liora looked at her. Not the road-look, not the fountain-look. Directly. "Some things I'll remember won't be specifically about Halveth," she said.
Wren looked at her.
"The gate with the wrought iron," Liora said. "The building with the visible joins. This bench with this tree with this light." She looked at the square. "And some things that I'll remember as being in Halveth will actually be—" she paused, finding the words. "Associated with being here with someone. Which is technically about Halveth but not really about Halveth."
Wren thought about this. "Does that distinction matter?"
"I don't know yet." Liora wrote something in the third notebook. "I'm practicing not needing distinctions to be resolved before I can sit with them."
Wren looked at the tree.
She thought: this is the practice, extended to larger things.
She thought: she's practicing not converting experience into categories immediately. Letting it be associated, ambiguous, alive.
She thought: I'm watching someone learn something in real time. Not in the dramatic version that looks like sudden insight. In the version that looks like a person sitting on a bench writing in a notebook with a small frown of concentration.
She thought: I like this version.
---
They came back to the inn in the mid-afternoon, the light going to the specific quality that meant the day had done its main work.
Liora sat at the table with the personal notebook open. Not writing — holding it open, which was a different mode. Looking at what was already there rather than adding to it.
Wren settled on the bed with the dual-consciousness book from Casven's collection. Not reading intensively — picking it up and putting it down, the easy engagement of someone reading for interest rather than necessity.
They were both doing things. The room was quiet.
After a while, Liora: "Are you anxious about tomorrow?"
Wren set the book down and thought about it genuinely. "I want to know," she said. "I'm not afraid of knowing. I'm aware that what I learn might require difficult decisions and I don't know what those decisions will be yet, but the not-knowing isn't frightening, it's just — incomplete." She paused. "I don't think that's the same as anxious."
"No," Liora said. "It's not." She looked at the notebook. "I'm not anxious either. I'm — prepared to receive information that might be difficult. Which is different from braced against it." She paused. "I've been braced against things for a long time. This feels different."
"Like waiting instead of flinching," Wren said.
Liora looked at her. Something in the expression that was recognizing something accurately named. "Yes," she said. "Exactly like that."
---
Dinner was at the same place — the stall that had become theirs by repetition, by the logic of returning to what worked without requiring justification. The vendor recognized them now, which was another kind of pattern-formation: three days of being in the same place was enough to become a fixture in the small way.
Wren thought about what she'd said to Liora in Karath: *you show up consistently and you don't make trouble and eventually you become a fixture.* She hadn't expected to become a fixture anywhere in twenty-seven days. And yet.
Liora told a story over dinner.
Not a research-adjacent story, not something from the past three years of cities and registration offices. Something from before — from when she was a student at the Academy, early, before the research had become what it became. A particular seminar where she'd made an argument she was certain about and been comprehensively wrong in ways she hadn't anticipated, and the specific texture of learning to hold being wrong without it becoming permanent damage to her sense of what she knew.
It was a small story. Particular details — the room, the afternoon, the specific expression on the professor's face. The way being publicly wrong had felt and then the way that feeling had changed into something more like recalibration.
Wren listened.
She didn't take notes. She didn't ask follow-up questions that would have shaped it toward a different kind of story. She just received it, the way Liora had received the Pennsylvania library story, the way Liora had been teaching her to receive things by modeling it.
When the story ended, there was a brief comfortable silence.
"You kept that," Wren said.
"I thought about it today. The building with the visible joins — it reminded me." Liora looked at the table. "I think that's what I was doing, in the seminar. Learning not to hide where I'd been wrong. To let the join show."
Wren looked at her.
She thought: she's been doing this all day. Not research. Association. Letting things connect to each other without organizing them into a framework first. The gate and the building and the story and the bench and the pastries from the market — all of it being collected, not catalogued.
She thought: this is what she looks like when she's not converting experience into output.
She thought: she's been becoming this person for weeks and today I can see the whole shape of it.
She thought: I love her.
The thought arrived the way it always arrived now — not as discovery, just as presence. True in the background, specific in the foreground when she noticed it. Not requiring action. Just: there, accurate, hers.
---
Back in the room. The lamp. Both notebooks on the table.
Liora looked at Wren.
"I need to say something," she said. "Before tomorrow."
Wren looked at her.
"When Maren tells you what she knows," Liora said, "whatever it is — if the survivability information is worse than we've been assuming, or better, or different — I don't want your decision to be shaped by how you think I would feel about your decision."
Wren was quiet. "What do you mean?"
"I have a stake in the outcome. You know that. I'm not going to pretend otherwise." She looked at the table. "But my stake doesn't get to be a weight on your side of the scale when you're deciding what you want to do. The decision has to be yours. Not a version of yours that's been adjusted for what you think I'd prefer."
Wren sat with this.
"You think I'd do that?" she said.
"I think you might," Liora said. "Not deliberately. Not as calculation. But—" she paused. "You care about me. And people who care about each other sometimes make their choices partly from that caring rather than from what they actually want for themselves." She looked at Wren. "I don't want to be the reason you say yes to something you wouldn't have said yes to otherwise. Or no."
Wren looked at her.
She thought: she's been thinking about this since the mentor. Since yesterday, since the plaza. She worked out the shape of what her mentor did and she's now actively checking herself against it.
She thought: that's not nothing.
"You're worried about doing what he did," Wren said.
"Yes." Liora said it simply. "He thought he was protecting me. He decided what I could handle without asking me. I've spent twenty-four hours understanding how that worked and I'm now very aware of all the ways it would be easy to do the same thing in reverse." A pause. "I love you. I would like you to survive whatever this requires. Those are both true and neither of them gets to be the reason you make a choice you wouldn't otherwise make."
Wren sat with that.
She thought about: *I waited until you found yours first.* About Liora saying *yours first, it's yours.* About all the moments when the specific thing being offered was the choice — not just the outcome, the actual choosing.
She thought: she's been practicing giving choice back since before she knew she was practicing it.
"I understand," Wren said.
"And?"
Wren looked at her. "And I'll make the decision I actually want to make, because that's the only kind of decision worth making." She paused. "Which is what I'd have done anyway. But I understand why you needed to say it."
Liora looked at her. Something that was quieter than all the catalogued expressions and also more complete — the expression of someone who has done the thing they needed to do and it worked the way it needed to work.
"I learned something from what happened to me," she said. "I'm trying not to repeat it."
"I know," Wren said.
"That's the third meaning," Liora said.
Wren looked at her.
"Of *I know.*" Liora looked at the lamp. "I know — received. I know — certain about myself. I know —" she paused. "Seeing you accurately and holding what I see correctly." She looked at Wren. "That's what I mean this time."
Wren held all three of those at once, which was exactly the right number of things to hold.
"Good night," she said.
"Good night," Liora said.
She thought, afterward, in the distributed-rest state that was just how she slept: tomorrow Maren will tell me what she knows. And whatever she tells me, I will decide what I want to do with it. Mine.
She thought: Liora just taught me something. The same thing she learned from yesterday, turned around and given back. The lesson is: decisions have to be the decider's, or they're not decisions.
She thought: I already knew that. I've been making decisions for twenty-seven days. But knowing it as a received lesson is different from knowing it as something someone gave you on purpose because they love you and don't want to repeat a mistake.
She thought: that's the fourth meaning of *I know.* The one Liora hadn't named yet.
The lamp made its steady light. Both of her were in the room. Maren was coming tomorrow. All of that was true at the same time, and all of it fit inside the same evening, and the evening held it without difficulty.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The message from Casven arrived with breakfast.
Not dramatic — a folded note delivered by the inn's morning person, passed to Liora because she was the one already downstairs when it came, which meant Wren got the information secondhand when she came down with both bodies and found Liora reading a small piece of paper with the expression she wore for things that were significant but not surprising.
