Vethmore appeared in stages, the way small towns do when the road to them winds enough that you get glimpses before you get the whole picture.
First: the smell. Wood smoke and animal and the particular warm-bread scent of a place that had been inhabited long enough to have accumulated a smell of its own, distinct from the forest it had been carved out of. Wren caught it through both bodies simultaneously — Ira on the first wagon with the sharper olfactory sensitivity of a body designed for threat detection, Sera on the third wagon cataloguing it as information rather than warning. Different responses to the same input. She was getting used to that.
Then: the walls. Low stone, patched in several places with newer material that hadn't weathered to match yet, functional rather than impressive. A gate of heavy timber, currently open, with two figures beside it who had the posture of people doing a job they'd done many times and expected to continue doing indefinitely.
Then: the whole of it, as the convoy rounded the final bend and Vethmore resolved from impression into fact. Smaller than she'd pictured from the map symbols, denser than she'd expected for its size — buildings close together in the way of places that had grown without planning, every available space eventually becoming someone's reason to put up a wall and a roof.
Wren looked at it from two angles, two wagons back in the convoy, and thought: there are rules here. Not the rules of a forest, which are physical and immediate and can be learned by surviving them. Rules that are written down somewhere, or agreed upon, or enforced by the people standing at that gate. Rules about what a person is and what a person is allowed to do and where a person is allowed to sleep and whether a person who technically constitutes two bodies requires two of anything.
She'd been thinking about this for the last hour.
She had not arrived at any useful conclusions.
---
The gate guards were exactly what she'd expected: practical, experienced, and mildly bored in the way of people whose job involved a great deal of waiting punctuated by occasional decisions. They watched the convoy approach with the automatic assessment of people who had processed a lot of convoys and knew how to read them quickly.
Aldric at the front, familiar enough to get a nod.
The wagons, unremarkable.
The people alongside the wagons, cross-referenced against a mental catalogue of known troublemakers and found absent.
Then Ira.
Then Sera, further back.
Then back to Ira, with the specific quality of attention that meant the catalogue was coming up empty and a new entry was being considered.
Wren was still working out which body to speak from and what to say when Aldric, without looking back, said: "Traveling with us. Pulled night watch three nights running. No problems."
Not *she's with us.* Not *she's a Nephilim but she's harmless.* Just: function, duration, outcome. The merchant's assessment, delivered in the merchant's register, which apparently carried enough weight with the gate guards that the one on the left made a small gesture and stepped back.
Wren filed this under things she hadn't expected and moved both bodies through the gate.
She didn't say anything to Aldric. He didn't look back. The convoy moved into Vethmore and the gate closed behind the last wagon, and that was the end of that exchange, which had contained more than she knew how to account for.
---
The first challenge was distance.
Vethmore was not large by any standard she could apply, but it was large enough that the space between two bodies moving through it independently could exceed the fifty-meter threshold at which Distance Strain started accruing Soul cost. She'd tested this in theory during the forest days; she hadn't tested it in practice in an environment where she needed both bodies to be functional and also to not bump into people.
The optimal configuration, she discovered through trial and error over approximately fifteen minutes and three separate collisions — one Ira into a market stall, one Sera into a person carrying a basket of what turned out to be eggs, and one both-bodies-stopping-short-simultaneously when a cart pulled out of a side street — was approximately twelve to fifteen meters of separation, moving in parallel paths through the market rather than in single file.
This gave them independent coverage of adjacent spaces while keeping Distance Strain below the threshold, and it looked, to an external observer, like two women traveling together but not joined at the hip, which was a social configuration people apparently had a framework for.
What it felt like from the inside was: a constant low-level spatial awareness of where the other body was, updated continuously, the way you know where your hands are without looking at them. This was new. Or it was new enough that she noticed it — she wasn't sure if it had been developing gradually and she'd only just reached the threshold of conscious awareness, or if something about being in an environment that required active spatial management had triggered it into existence.
She made a note to check the skill list later and kept moving.
The market itself presented a secondary problem she hadn't anticipated: people talked to her. Both of her, independently, at the same time, as she moved through adjacent sections of the market. A spice seller addressed Ira about a preparation she hadn't asked about. A fabric merchant tried to show Sera something she also hadn't asked about. Wren found herself conducting two separate conversations simultaneously — Ira making noncommittal noises about spices she didn't need, Sera extricating herself from an increasingly enthusiastic description of a particularly durable weave — and the cognitive load was different from combat, less urgent but more sustained, the difference between sprinting and walking a long distance uphill.
She was better at it than she'd been four days ago. This was the only useful thing she could say about it.
The market was extraordinary in the way that markets always are when you've been eating whatever was available in a forest for four days: overwhelming, fragrant, and densely practical. Food stalls, tools, fabric, things she didn't recognize and would have to learn. A section of the market where several Dwarves were selling stonework, which made sense given the village she'd been deposited near. A stall run by something that was not quite human — taller, with a slight iridescence to its skin that caught the light differently — that appeared to be selling navigational instruments.
She bought food first. Then waterskins, because the ones she'd improvised from the village had started showing structural opinions about their continued function. Then a small knife for Sera, because Sera had a staff and a philosophy and absolutely nothing else that could be used to defend herself if the staff was on cooldown.
Then the weapons quarter.
---
The smith was a human woman of indeterminate middle age with the forearms of someone who had been doing physical work for a very long time and the eyes of someone who had heard a lot of descriptions of what people thought they needed and had learned to translate them into what they actually needed.
She looked at Ira the way the gate guards had looked at the convoy: rapid assessment, catalogue, conclusion.
"You fight," she said. Not a question.
"Yes."
"What style?"
Wren thought about how to describe what Ira did. "Aggressive close-range. More momentum than technique. I hit things and I keep hitting them until one of us stops."
The smith nodded with the expression of someone filing this under a known category. She produced a short sword — well-balanced, double-edged, clearly good quality — and held it out.
Ira took it.
Wren felt it immediately: wrong. Not defective, not poorly made. Wrong in the way a shoe is wrong when it fits the foot but not the gait — the balance point was in the middle, designed for a fighting style that worked in both directions, that valued recovery and redirect and the ability to change your mind mid-motion. Ira's combat style did not value these things. Ira's combat style was about commitment. Once Ira moved, she moved all the way.
"No," Wren said. She handed it back. "Something with more weight forward. Something that commits."
The smith looked at her with mild interest. "You know what you want."
"I know what it's not."
Over the next twenty minutes, she handled five weapons. A falchion — better, the forward weight was right, but the blade geometry wanted slashing rather than the impact work that Ira's STR 14 made more efficient. A heavy axe — too slow for the mobility Ira needed. A flanged mace — closer, but the handle length put the weight further from the hand than felt right. A short spear — wrong in every way, she put it back after ten seconds.
And then the smith, watching her work through the options with the patient attention of someone who found this professionally interesting, reached under the counter and produced something she hadn't displayed on the rack.
A war hammer. Short-handled, compact — designed for close quarters rather than cavalry work — with a head that was heavier than it looked and a balance point near the grip that said: *this is for hitting things, not for looking graceful while you do it.* The head had a flat face and a back spike, practical rather than decorative, the kind of weapon that had been designed by someone who cared about function and had subsequently stopped thinking about it.
Ira picked it up.
Wren felt both bodies settle simultaneously — Ira's hands wrapping around the grip with the ease of something fitting into its correct slot, and some corresponding relaxation in Sera, standing fifteen feet away at the neighboring stall, as if the resolution of a low-level tension she hadn't consciously registered.
"That one," Wren said.
The smith looked almost pleased.
---
She was standing at a food stall — Sera, buying dried fruit and something that the vendor described as a traveling bread and which turned out to be extremely dense and not particularly enjoyable but structurally sound — when it happened.
Ira was across the market, twelve meters away, looking at rope because rope had turned out to be one of those things she needed and hadn't thought to acquire earlier.
Wren's attention was on the food transaction. She was not thinking about Ira. She was thinking about whether the dried fruit was going to last three days or two and whether she needed more or whether she was overestimating how much two bodies ate, which was still a calculation she was doing wrong most of the time.
And she knew, without checking, without shifting focus, without doing anything that felt like an active operation, that Ira had moved to the left — about a meter, around someone who had stepped into the path — and was now standing approximately eleven meters away at a slightly different angle.
She hadn't looked. She hadn't checked. She just knew.
The System pinged.
*[Peripheral Awareness Lv.1 — UNLOCKED]* *[Passive spatial tracking of secondary body now active. User maintains continuous low-resolution awareness of secondary body's position and movement without requiring active attention. Sync Level: 11%.]*
Wren stood in the market with her dried fruit and her traveling bread and she tried, experimentally, to turn it off.
She could not turn it off.
She tried to stop knowing where Ira was.
Ira was eleven meters away, now twelve, having moved again without Wren directing it — the idle motion of a body with no immediate task, shifting weight, turning slightly to look at something.
She knew this the way she knew her own heartbeat. Not as information received. As simple fact.
She stood very still for a moment, in both bodies, in the middle of Vethmore's morning market, and thought: *oh.*
*Oh, that's what this is supposed to feel like.*
Not two things she was managing. Two parts of one thing. The distinction was subtle and enormous simultaneously, the difference between operating a tool and inhabiting a body, and she wasn't sure when exactly it had shifted from one to the other but it had, or it was starting to, and the evidence was the fact that she couldn't stop knowing where her own hands were.
She negotiated the price for the war hammer in a conversation that lasted longer than she'd expected, because the smith turned out to have opinions about maintenance — about the specific stone used to keep the head edge functional, about the joint between handle and head that was the most common failure point and how to check it — and delivered these opinions in the manner of someone who found it professionally objectionable to sell a weapon to someone who didn't know how to keep it. Wren listened, because the information was useful and because the smith's voice had the quality of someone who had learned things the hard way and was trying to prevent that from being necessary.
She left with the war hammer, the maintenance stone, and more knowledge about hammerhead metallurgy than she'd expected to have before noon.
She paid for the food, tucked it away, and went to find Ira, who was still looking at rope and had apparently decided she needed quite a lot of it.
---
Aldric found Sera late in the afternoon, near the inn where Wren had secured a room — a transaction that had produced, as anticipated, the question of how many people were staying, which she had answered with *"one person, two bodies, two beds in the same room please,"* and which the innkeeper had processed with the resigned pragmatism of someone who ran an inn in a town near a demon-active frontier and had therefore encountered stranger requirements.
He was carrying a small leather pouch, which he held out without preamble.
"For the third night," he said. "I didn't account for it in the original arrangement."
Wren looked at the pouch. It was not a large amount — she could feel the weight of it, modest, the kind of number that represented a calculation rather than a gesture. He had worked out what the third night's watch was worth and was paying it, not because he was generous but because he was precise, and precision in this case had arrived at the same place generosity would have.
"You didn't have to," she said.
"I calculated incorrectly," he said, which was apparently a sufficient explanation.
She took the pouch.
He looked at her — at Sera, at Ira visible in the inn's doorway twenty feet behind — with the expression he'd used for most of the journey: assessing, categorizing, updating. She'd come to find it comfortable, that look. It was honest in a way that a lot of expressions weren't.
"You'll be all right," he said. It wasn't a question, and it wasn't exactly reassurance — more like a conclusion he'd reached and was stating for the record.
"Probably," Wren said, which was as honest as she could be.
He made a small sound that might have been acknowledgment or might have been the start of a laugh that didn't finish, and turned back toward the convoy's resting position without further ceremony.
Wren watched him go. Ira, from the doorway, watched him go.
She thought about the gate this morning, and the word *problems* used in the negative, and the particular weight of someone using their credibility on your behalf without being asked to. She thought about Mira's silence in the wagon, and Torven's assessment-look updating, and the scholar's question that she still hadn't fully answered.
She'd known these people for four days.
She was fairly certain she was going to remember them for much longer than that.
---
The room was small, clean, and contained two beds that were approximately the right size for a human body, which was close enough. Wren locked the door — Ira did, with the new war hammer propped against the wall within reach, a positioning that had become automatic in the four days since she'd had anything to prop anywhere — and both bodies settled into the unfamiliar luxury of a space that belonged to her for the night.
She lay down. Both of her.
The ceiling was low and plain and had a small water stain in one corner shaped like nothing in particular. She looked at it from two angles, from two beds that were close enough to each other that she could have reached across the gap between them if she'd wanted to, which was a strange thing to notice about her own beds.
The town sounds came through the walls: voices, cart wheels, something that might have been music from somewhere lower in the building. Different from forest sounds. Different from wagon sounds. Sounds that meant *inhabited* in a way the previous nights hadn't.
She was almost asleep — both of her, in the distributed way that was becoming normal — when the knock came.
Three times, deliberate, at a pace that was not urgent but was not casual either.
Wren was on her feet before she'd consciously decided to be, Ira's hand finding the war hammer's handle in the dark with the automatic accuracy that [Peripheral Awareness] had apparently extended to objects as well as bodies. She crossed to the door and Sera sat up in the other bed, staff in hand, crystal still at half-recovery but present.
She opened it.
The man at the door was the gate guard from this morning — the one on the left, the one who had stepped back when Aldric spoke. He was not in uniform now, which told her this was not official business. He was holding a folded piece of paper with the careful grip of someone who had been asked to deliver it and was taking the responsibility seriously.
"Someone asked me to bring this," he said. "Before I went off shift. Came to the gate, knew your description, knew you'd come through this morning. Left this for you."
Wren took it.
The paper was good quality — not the rough working paper the merchants used, but something smoother, the kind that cost enough to be a statement. She unfolded it. The handwriting inside was neat, compressed, the handwriting of someone who wrote a great deal and had optimized it for information density rather than legibility.
A name she didn't recognize. A location — an address in Vethmore, or what read like an address, a street and a descriptor. And at the bottom, a small mark: a seal pressed in dark ink, a symbol that she looked at and didn't recognize consciously.
The System recognized it.
*[Faction identified: The Accord.]* *[Classification: Third-party entity. Non-divine, non-demonic alignment. Further information: insufficient data.]* *[Note: This faction has prior awareness of your existence and current location.]*
Wren stood in the doorway of a rented room in a town she'd been in for eight hours, holding a letter from an organization she'd never heard of that apparently knew exactly where she was, and thought about D's warning that both divine armies would eventually notice her.
She looked at the name on the letter again.
She looked at the seal.
She folded the paper, tucked it into the inside pocket of Sera's jacket — next to the map, next to the other things she was keeping — and closed the door.
She did not sleep easily after that.
Neither of her did.
You've reached the end of this chapter
Vethmore appeared in stages, the way small towns do when the road to them winds enough that you get glimpses before you get the whole picture.
