The gate appeared at eight fourteen in the evening, which was, by any reasonable standard, inconvenient.
Class B, residential perimeter, pressure window fourteen hours. Si-jun ran the numbers in the time it took Yoon-seo to pull up the gate specs on her phone, and the conclusion was the same one she'd already reached: too late to start and finish tonight, too short a window to wait until morning. They'd go in now, clear the first floor, establish a rest point, and finish at dawn.
"Overnight in the dungeon," Min-seok said, with the particular tone of someone who had done this before and had opinions about it.
"Bring your good sleeping mat," Ha-eun said, already moving toward the gear room.
Yoon-seo checked her memory of this dungeon against the briefing data. Class B, three floors, standard layout, no documented nocturnal spawn activity. She had read it in passing — a background detail in a chapter that had been about something else — and the thing she remembered most clearly was that it was, by dungeon standards, unremarkable. Stable. Safe to rest in, if you used the word safe loosely, which everyone in this line of work apparently did.
Fine, she thought. She had slept in worse situations. Probably.
She packed an extra layer and followed the team in.
---
They cleared the first floor in an hour and a half, set up camp in a wide alcove near the central passage where the ceiling was high enough to breathe and the walls were solid enough to lean against without worrying about structural integrity. Six bedrolls in a loose cluster. Ha-eun and Min-seok were already arguing in the comfortable way of people who had shared small spaces many times before about who had taken whose preferred spot last time. Park Jun-ho set up with the quiet efficiency of someone who traveled light by habit. Si-jun reviewed the second floor approach on his tablet and said he'd take first watch.
Si-woo put his pack down near the alcove entrance — closest to the passage out, she noted, the same logic as every other space she'd watched him occupy — and sat with his back against the wall rather than setting up a bedroll at all.
Yoon-seo set up her bedroll, lay down, and stared at the dungeon ceiling.
The ceiling was stone, irregular, with a faint luminescence from some mineral in the rock that the dungeon's ambient light had activated. It was not unpleasant to look at. It was also not conducive to sleep, though she suspected the ceiling was not actually the problem.
Chae-won's apartment had a mattress that she had spent two weeks sleeping on and that had apparently recalibrated her entire relationship with horizontal surfaces. The bedroll was fine. The bedroll was perfectly functional. The bedroll was a completely reasonable thing to sleep on and she had slept on worse in her previous life and she was going to go to sleep now.
At two in the morning, she gave up and sat up.
---
The camp was quiet. Ha-eun and Min-seok were asleep, Min-seok with the depth of someone who could sleep through structural collapse and Ha-eun with the alertness of someone who was technically asleep but would be upright in under a second if something changed. Park Jun-ho's breathing was even. Si-jun had handed off the watch at midnight and was out with the completeness of someone running on a schedule.
Yoon-seo picked up her jacket and moved carefully to the edge of the alcove, stepping around the bedrolls, and found a flat section of rock a few meters out into the main passage where she could sit without being in anyone's way.
She sat down and looked at the dungeon at night.
It was different. Not more dangerous — the data had been right about that, nothing moved in the passages that she could hear or sense — but different in the way that any place was different when the people in it were asleep and you were the only one watching. The luminescence in the walls was more visible without the team's portable lights. The silence had texture. She could hear the dungeon breathing, or something that functioned like breathing, the slow pressure shifts of a contained space doing whatever contained spaces did when they weren't being actively cleared.
She had been sitting there for perhaps ten minutes when she registered that she was not alone.
Si-woo was exactly where she'd left him — back against the wall at the alcove entrance, in the same position he'd been in when she'd tried to fall asleep three hours ago. She had assumed he'd shifted at some point, maybe settled in, maybe finally lay down. He hadn't. He was sitting with his knees loosely bent and his eyes open, looking at the passage ahead with the patient, unfocused quality of someone who had been doing this for a long time.
He looked at her when she sat down. She looked at him.
Neither of them said anything.
She settled onto the rock and pulled her jacket tighter and looked at the dungeon, and he looked at the dungeon, and the silence was the same silence from the common room two days ago — not weighted, not waiting, just there.
---
Fifteen minutes passed. Or twenty. The dungeon's ambient sound had a rhythm that made time slippery.
"First time camping in a dungeon?"
His voice was lower than usual — not a whisper, just calibrated for a space where no one else needed to hear. She turned to look at him. He was still looking at the passage ahead.
"That obvious?" she said.
"You checked the ceiling for forty minutes before you gave up."
He had been watching her try to sleep. She wasn't sure how she felt about that. She also wasn't sure she minded, which was its own separate problem.
"First time," she confirmed. "You?"
He didn't answer immediately. She had learned, by now, that this wasn't evasion — it was just how he processed questions that didn't have simple answers. She waited.
"It gets easier," he said finally. Which was not quite an answer to her question, and they both knew it, and he didn't seem to feel the need to address that gap.
She looked at the passage ahead and thought about how to ask the thing she'd been cataloguing for weeks — the choosing-of-exits, the wall-touching, the position at every threshold — without it sounding like what it was, which was: I have been paying attention to you and I have questions.
"You always pick the spot nearest the exit," she said. "Every room. Every camp."
A pause. "Habit."
"What kind of habit."
He looked at her then — a brief, sidelong look, assessing. Not hostile. Something more careful than that, the look of someone deciding how much of a true answer the question had earned.
"The useful kind," he said.
She nodded and let it go. He hadn't deflected entirely — he'd given her the shape of it without the content, which was more than he'd given her before, and she understood enough about the economy of what he shared to know that pushing would cost more than it returned.
They sat in silence for a while longer. Then:
"What do you read?"
She turned. He was looking at the passage again, the question delivered in the same mild, observational tone as everything else he said, as though he'd simply noticed the question was there and had decided to say it out loud.
She thought about the careful answer — something vague, something Chae-won might plausibly have said. She thought about the strategic answer. She thought about the answer that maintained appropriate distance between her and the target of a system mission she was supposed to be completing with professional detachment.
"Novels," she said. "A lot of them. The kind that end well."
He was quiet for a moment. "Why that kind specifically?"
She looked at the luminescent walls, the slow light of a dungeon at rest, and thought about late nights at a desk in an office where nobody would notice if she didn't come back, eating cold food and reading about people whose lives resolved into something.
"Because there aren't many of those in real life," she said.
The dungeon breathed around them. Si-woo said nothing, and she didn't expect him to — it wasn't the kind of thing that wanted a response, just the kind of thing that occasionally needed to be said out loud to someone who wasn't going to make it into more than it was.
He didn't make it into more than it was.
She wasn't sure, later, exactly when the conversation had stopped. It had dissolved rather than ended, fading into a silence that had shifted quality somewhere along the way from two people not talking to something that functioned, in the dark of a dungeon at three in the morning, like the opposite of being alone.
When the first pale change came in the dungeon's ambient light — the slow shift that preceded the team's alarm by about twenty minutes, a dungeon's version of dawn — Si-woo stood. Brushed the dust from his hands with the unhurried motion of someone wrapping up something that had taken exactly as long as it needed to.
"Team will be up soon," he said.
He walked back to the alcove without looking back.
Yoon-seo sat on the rock for another minute and looked at the dungeon lightening around her and did the math: three hours. They had talked — and sat in silence, which she was increasingly certain counted — for three hours, and it had felt like considerably less, and she was going to need to think carefully about what that meant.
Later, she decided. She would think about it later.
She stood up and went to help break camp, and did not examine the fact that the space Si-woo had left behind him felt different from the space he usually left.
