Monday morning arrived with the particular quality of Monday mornings: the end of the suspension of consequences.
Yoon-seo sat at the kitchen table at seven fifteen with her coffee and the divergence map and a problem she had been declining to look at directly for approximately sixty hours. The problem was this: she had been in this world for five weeks, she had a mission with a penalty clause, and her current approach to that mission could be most charitably described as existing in the vicinity of the target and hoping for the best.
That was not a plan. That was drift.
Drift was fine when the consequences were inconvenient. The consequence here was permanent erasure of the soul, which was a different category of inconvenient.
She got up, found a clean sheet of paper in Chae-won's desk — the kind of heavy cream paper that cost more per sheet than Yoon-seo used to spend on lunch — and sat back down.
She was going to make a plan. A real one. Systematic, specific, executable. She had spent three years managing complex projects with unclear parameters and hostile stakeholders. She could do this.
She wrote at the top of the page, in her neatest handwriting: Conquest Strategy — Kwon Si-woo — Revised Framework.
Then she underlined it, because it looked more official with an underline.
---
Rule one came easily: Maintain consistent contact — minimum one substantive interaction per day, not counting incidental proximity.
Substantive, she specified in a note to herself, meant interactions that were more than logistical. More than passing in corridors or sitting in the same room. Actual exchange — conversation, shared task, something that required both parties to be present in a way that was not merely physical.
Good. Specific. Achievable.
Rule two: Create opportunities for natural proximity — leverage dungeon assignments, supply logistics, training schedules.
Also good. She was already doing this, more or less, but making it explicit as a rule gave it structure. Structure was useful. Structure meant she was approaching this as a project manager and not as — whatever the alternative was, which she was not going to name.
She moved to rule three.
Rule three took longer to write. She sat with her pen hovering over the paper for a moment, organizing her thoughts, and then wrote: Identify and respond to his stated and unstated needs — continue pattern of anticipatory attention already established.
She read it back.
She read it back again.
Anticipatory attention already established.
She thought about the compression bandages she restocked before anyone asked. The seventh lunchbox, set slightly apart. The way she positioned herself in dungeon formations so she had a clear line to him if his ability destabilized. The supply room Thursday afternoons because she had noticed he used the supply room Thursday afternoons. The way she had learned, without deciding to learn it, the specific quality of his silences — which ones meant he was processing, which ones meant he was deciding, which ones meant he was simply existing and didn't require anything from her.
She had written pattern of anticipatory attention already established as though it were a tactical asset she had deliberately cultivated.
It was not. It was just — what she did now. What had happened while she was thinking about other things. The natural consequence of paying attention to someone for five weeks, which she had done because the mission required it, except she was no longer entirely sure that was the only reason she had done it.
She looked at rule three for a long moment.
Then she moved on to rule four.
---
Rule four: Do not allow personal feeling to influence execution. The mission requires a specific outcome. Maintain clarity about what the outcome is and why it matters.
She wrote this one more slowly. The pen moved at about two-thirds its usual speed, which she noticed and did not comment on, even internally.
Rule five: Remember that this is a mission. Results matter. The process is not the point.
She put the pen down.
She looked at the paper. All five rules, in her neat handwriting, on expensive cream stationery, underlined title at the top.
She read them in order.
Rules one through three, executed faithfully, required her to be closer to him, know him better, and attend to him more carefully than she already did. Rules four and five required her to do all of that while not caring about any of it.
These were not five rules. These were two sets of instructions pointing in opposite directions, written by someone who was trying to convince herself that the directions were the same.
You could not pay very close attention to a person for five weeks and also not develop feelings about that person. That was not how attention worked. That was not how people worked. Yoon-seo had known this in the abstract for her entire adult life and had apparently needed to write five rules on expensive stationery on a Monday morning to understand it as it applied to her specifically.
She folded the paper in half. Then in half again. Then she put it in the drawer under the divergence map and closed the drawer.
She finished her coffee, which had gone cold again — this was becoming a pattern — and washed the cup and got her bag and went to base, because there was nothing else to do and the work was real regardless of whatever was happening with the plan.
---
The eleventh lunchbox went on the table at quarter past nine. The seventh container, as always, slightly apart.
Ha-eun arrived at nine thirty, took a container, said "the egg is better this week," and went to her desk. Min-seok arrived at nine forty-five and said "oh good, Monday just got better" and took two before Ha-eun stopped him with a look. Park Jun-ho said thank you in his quiet way. Si-jun assessed the table, took a container, and left for his office.
Yoon-seo sat at her table and worked on the monthly equipment review and did not watch the door.
She was not watching the door.
Si-woo arrived at ten twelve, which was later than usual — she had not been tracking the time, she simply happened to note it when she checked her phone for an unrelated reason at ten thirteen. He came through the door with the unhurried pace she had catalogued many times, crossed to the equipment table, and set down whatever he'd been carrying.
He didn't look at the lunchbox table immediately. He checked something in his kit first, the same methodical motion she'd watched in the supply room on Saturday. Then he looked up — at the room generally, the kind of scan that took in the whole space — and his gaze moved across the table and registered the seventh container in the way she had learned to watch for: the almost-imperceptible pause, the slight recalibration.
She had already looked back at her equipment review before his gaze reached her side of the room.
She had been watching the door. She could admit this to herself, inside the privacy of her own head, where the rules she had written and immediately folded up could not hear her. She had been aware of the door in the way you were aware of something you were waiting for without admitting you were waiting for it, and when he had come through it she had registered the fact before she'd consciously processed it.
Rule four, she thought. Failed. Day one. Before ten fifteen in the morning.
She turned a page on the equipment review.
The rules had lasted approximately three hours from conception to first violation, which was, she reflected, probably a personal record of some kind. She wasn't sure whether to be impressed or concerned. She settled on: noted, filed, moving on.
She was moving on.
Across the room, she heard the quiet sound of the seventh container being picked up.
She did not look up. She turned another page. The equipment review had seventeen more items on it and all of them needed her attention and none of them were Kwon Si-woo arriving at ten twelve on a Monday morning, later than usual, in a way that she had noticed and was now declining to examine.
She worked through the list.
Outside, the city did its Monday things. The building ran its Monday sounds. Somewhere in the room behind her, someone who she was absolutely not paying attention to ate a lunchbox she had made without a plan and with no strategic intent whatsoever.
Five rules, she thought. Three hours. Not even close.
