"We should get food," Min-seok said, while they were still in the parking structure.
This was Min-seok's standard post-dungeon proposal — Yoon-seo had heard it after every run of sufficient difficulty, delivered with the specific energy of someone who had decided the solution to being tired was to address the hunger component and trust the rest to follow. Usually it was declined with varying degrees of politeness. Usually the team dispersed and went home.
"There's a place two streets over," Ha-eun said, which was Ha-eun's version of enthusiastic agreement.
Yoon-seo looked at Ha-eun with mild surprise that she hoped had not registered on Chae-won's face. Ha-eun, for her part, appeared to have said the thing she said and moved on, already checking something on her phone.
"I can come for an hour," Si-jun said. Park Jun-ho said he had something but could stop by briefly. Min-seok turned to Si-woo with the expression of someone who had been hoping for this outcome and was now extending the invitation to the most uncertain variable.
Si-woo looked at — she noticed this, the slight direction of his gaze — her, for a half-second, before he looked back at Min-seok. "Fine," he said.
Min-seok's response to this was disproportionate in the way Min-seok's responses to most positive developments were. Ha-eun did not react, which meant she had expected it.
Yoon-seo looked at the middle distance and thought: twelve weeks, and this is the first time.
---
The restaurant was the kind of place that existed in every city — small, slightly too warm, the tables close enough together that conversation from adjacent parties was a soft presence rather than an intrusion. The menu was written on a chalkboard that had not been fully updated in some time. The food, when it arrived, was exactly as good as the unpretentious setting suggested it would be.
She ended up sitting across from Ha-eun, which was her preference — Ha-eun was the most restful person to sit across from in any group, requiring nothing beyond presence and responding to nothing beyond what was offered. Min-seok was at the head of the table doing something energetic with the ordering process. Si-jun had taken a chair at the far end and was reviewing something on his phone with the focused calm of someone who had learned to decompress by staying in motion.
Si-woo sat down in the seat beside her.
Not across — beside. The chair to her left, the one that remained after everyone else had settled. She registered this with the specific awareness she had developed over twelve weeks of paying attention to where he positioned himself in spaces and adjusted her own posture by approximately nothing and kept her attention on the menu.
---
She watched him, across the next hour, in the way she watched him everywhere — peripherally, continuously, with the ambient attention that had become part of how she existed in rooms he was also in.
Here was what she saw: he was quiet, as she had expected. He did not initiate conversation, as she had expected. He ate with the same unhurried efficiency he brought to everything, which she had expected.
What she had not expected was the rest of it.
When Min-seok said something genuinely funny — and Min-seok said genuinely funny things with reliable regularity, the humor of someone who approached the world without irony and found it consistently surprising — she caught Si-woo's eyes drop for a fraction of a second in the way eyes dropped when something registered as amusement and the person didn't want to show it. Not suppression exactly. More like: the response was there and he had simply not decided to display it, the way you chose not to add a particular word to a sentence without the sentence being worse for it.
When Ha-eun and Si-jun had a brief, low-voiced disagreement about something tactical — one of those compressed team conversations that carried the weight of a longer argument that had been had many times before — she noticed Si-woo tracking it with the same quiet attention he tracked everything, and then, at the moment it resolved, looking away. Not because it had resolved badly. Because it had resolved. He had been watching to see if it would.
He pays attention to the team, she thought. Not in the way of someone who is monitoring for threats — in the way of someone who has learned that the things you care about need to be watched, because things you care about can change.
She had not known this about him. She had known the dungeon version, the base version, the supply room and parking structure and night watch versions. This was a different angle on the same person, and she found herself adding it to what she knew with the same care she'd been adding things for twelve weeks.
---
Ha-eun asked her the question at the forty-minute mark, in the mild, conversational way Ha-eun asked things — not pointed, not probing, the genuine curiosity of someone who had been working alongside a person for three months and had noted the gaps.
"What did you do before this?" Ha-eun said. "Before the supply contracts."
She had the Chae-won answer ready — some version of the Kang family business, some reference to the administrative side of chaebol operations that was technically true and practically empty. She opened her mouth to give it.
"Office work," she said instead. "Reports. Spreadsheets. Nothing that required being in dungeons."
Ha-eun nodded. Min-seok said something about spreadsheets being, in his experience, more terrifying than most dungeon bosses, which produced a brief detour in the conversation that she was grateful for.
When it settled again she found herself still talking, which was not what she had planned but was apparently what was happening.
"I used to read a lot," she said. Not to Ha-eun specifically — to the table, to the warm, slightly unfocused space of a post-dungeon dinner where everyone was tired enough to be honest. "At work, late, when there wasn't anything else to do. I'd read during breaks that weren't really breaks. Just — something else to look at, when looking at what was actually in front of me stopped being enough."
She was aware, as she said this, that she was saying something true. Not the full truth — she was always aware of the gap between what she said and the full truth — but something from the layer underneath the cover story, something that was actually hers.
"What kind of things?" Ha-eun asked.
"Stories. The kind where things work out." She looked at the table. "I think I was trying to convince myself that was a possible outcome."
Ha-eun looked at her for a moment — the assessment that was Ha-eun's particular version of attention, more percipient than it appeared — and then Min-seok said something and the conversation moved on, and the moment passed without requiring anything further.
She had not meant to say that. She did not regret having said it.
---
The dinner dispersed the way these things dispersed — gradually, in ones and twos, the table contracting as people remembered the things they had to do before sleep made them irrelevant. Min-seok left loudly and with specific instructions about the next time, which everyone acknowledged with varying degrees of sincerity. Park Jun-ho, who had arrived mid-dinner and stayed for the dessert course, said his quiet goodnight. Si-jun and Ha-eun left together, which happened sometimes — not out of anything planned, just the coincidence of two people going the same direction.
Which left Yoon-seo and Si-woo walking out of the restaurant at the same time because they had been sitting beside each other and standing up at the same time was the natural consequence of that.
The street outside was cooler than the restaurant. The dinner hour was ending and the late-evening shift beginning, the city doing its nightly reconfiguration. She turned up her collar and oriented herself toward her car and did not make the mistake of filling the silence, which she had learned was not a mistake with him.
They walked half a block in the particular quiet that she had stopped trying to categorize and had started simply accepting as a quality of his company. At the corner, their routes diverged — she knew this from the parking structure layout, which she had memorized in the way she had memorized most practical information about this world.
She was about to say the abbreviated version of goodnight when he spoke.
"Stories that work out," he said.
Not a question. Not a comment, exactly. The voice he used for things he was saying because he had decided to say them, which she had learned to distinguish from the voice he used for things he felt obligated to say. He was looking ahead, at the street, at the particular nothing of a November night in a city going about its business.
"The novels you read," he said. "They end well."
She looked at the side of his face. He had heard this — in the dungeon, the first time she'd said it, weeks ago, when she hadn't known what to expect from a three-hour conversation in the dark. And again tonight, the version she'd given Ha-eun that had come out more honest than she'd planned. He had been listening both times. He had held both instances and put them together into something he was now saying back to her, not to inform her of what she'd said but to acknowledge that he had heard it.
"Yes," she said.
He nodded once — the small, complete nod — and turned and walked toward his car.
She watched him go for a moment, in the way she always watched him go, and then she turned and walked toward hers.
He had remembered, she thought. From weeks ago, from tonight, from the specific detail of what she'd said and what it had meant. He had filed it and held it and brought it back, in the way he held everything — quietly, without display, until he decided it was time.
She had told Ha-eun she used to read stories where things worked out because she needed to believe that was possible.
She stood on the street corner in November and thought: I am still doing that. Just differently now. With different source material.
She went to her car and drove home through the city and did not examine this thought too closely, because some things were worth carrying for a while before you looked at them directly.
