The memory arrived, as Chae-won's memories always did, without announcement.
She was in the kitchen at seven in the morning, measuring rice with the small cup that had come with the cooker, and she was thinking about nothing in particular — the pleasant blankness of early morning before the day had fully assembled itself — when it arrived. Not the dining room. Not the father talking over her head at the long formal table. Something smaller than that, and for that reason more precise.
A school cafeteria. Chae-won was perhaps fourteen. The particular social geometry of that age: who sat where, who sat alone, who sat adjacent to others without quite being with them. Chae-won had sat alone, at the end of a table, in the way of someone who had been doing it long enough to have stopped noticing it as a condition.
And then a girl had sat down next to her.
Not across — next to. One seat over, with the deliberate informality of someone choosing a position rather than being assigned one. She had been a transfer student, new that semester, and she had either not received or had decided to disregard the social information about Kang Chae-won that the rest of the school had clearly already processed. She had sat next to Chae-won and said something about the food and Chae-won had answered and they had eaten lunch together.
They had eaten lunch together for four months.
And then the girl had transferred again — her family moved, it was explained, nothing to do with anything — and she had not said goodbye. Not because she was unkind. Because she was fourteen and had not understood, as fourteen-year-olds often didn't, that the absence of goodbye was the part that stayed.
Yoon-seo stood in the kitchen with the rice cup in her hand and held this memory for a moment.
That's why, she thought. That's why Chae-won stopped trying. Not because she was cold by nature. Because she had learned, from enough iterations of the same lesson, that the people who sat next to you eventually moved on, and the person left sitting alone was always her, and at some point you stopped setting yourself up for the next iteration of a lesson you had already learned.
She understood this. Not from Chae-won's direction — from her own, from the office and the overtime and the three years of being useful to people who left at five and would not have noticed if she hadn't.
Different routes to the same room.
She finished measuring the rice and started the cooker and went to get ready for the day.
---
There was no dungeon scheduled. The day had the open quality of days without missions — slower, more spacious, the work existing without the compression of a deadline or a gate. She arrived at base at nine thirty with the eighteenth lunchbox, set the seventh container in its usual position, and settled into the supply review she'd been working through for the past week.
Si-woo arrived at ten. Ate at the common table. Stayed — she had stopped noting this as unusual, it had become the pattern — at the equipment wall, working through something with careful hands.
The morning passed. They worked. The building did its building things. Ha-eun and Min-seok were in and out on separate errands. Park Jun-ho was in the administrative office. Si-jun was somewhere she hadn't tracked.
At some point in the early afternoon, in the particular quiet of the common room with only two people in it, she put her pen down and looked at the manifest without reading it and said, without planning to:
"The person who had this body before me had one friend when she was young. Someone who sat next to her at lunch when no one else did." She was not looking at him — looking at the table. "That person transferred schools after one semester and didn't say goodbye. Not out of cruelty. Just — didn't."
She paused. The room was very quiet.
"I think that's when she stopped trying," she said.
---
She had expected several possible responses: confusion at the phrasing, questions about what she meant by before me, the particular social awkwardness of someone who had been handed an unexpected confidence and wasn't sure what to do with it.
Si-woo was quiet for a moment. Then he set down whatever he'd been working with.
He did not ask about the phrasing. He sat with the content, the way she had learned he sat with things — receiving them fully before responding, the opposite of the reflexive reply.
"I didn't know where I was allowed to be," he said, "until I was told I wasn't."
He was looking at the table. Not at her — at the surface, the flat, specific nothing of something to look at when you were saying something that didn't want eye contact.
"The Kwon family brought me in and then removed me. Before that, my mother. After that —" He stopped. A pause that was not processing but editing — choosing how much of the sentence to say. "I learned that the question wasn't where I wanted to be. The question was where I'd be removed from next."
The room held this for a moment.
Yoon-seo put her pen down. She looked at him — not the careful peripheral attention she usually maintained, but directly, across the table, the same way she'd looked at him in the boss room and the training room and the parking structure.
"That's not the right question," she said.
Not a correction. A fact. The same flat delivery he used for facts, because it was true and because it needed to be said plainly.
"The right question," she said, "is whether anyone stays."
He looked up.
She held his gaze. The afternoon light was doing something particular to the room — the angle of it through the windows, the way it fell across the table between them, the quality of it that she would not have noticed three months ago and noticed now because she had been in this room enough times to know its light at every hour.
The silence lasted long enough that she thought he might not answer. That this might be one of the things that was received and held and not returned with words. She had learned to accept this as a valid response — had come, in fact, to understand it as often the most honest one.
Then he said: "Yes."
One word. The same voice. Even, unhurried, the same quality as everything else he said.
But she had been listening to his voice for thirteen weeks and she understood — in the specific, accumulated way she understood most things about him — that he was not answering a theoretical question. He was not speaking generally, abstractly, about the principle of people staying. He was answering the question she had asked, which had been about a specific thing, and his answer was about a specific thing, and the specific thing was the person sitting across the table from him in an afternoon that had become something neither of them had planned for it to be.
She looked at him for a moment longer.
Then she picked up her pen and returned to the manifest.
He returned to his equipment.
The afternoon continued. The light moved. Neither of them said anything else, and the thing that had been said continued to exist in the room without requiring anything further from either of them, which was, she had come to understand, how the most important things worked.
