She had been thinking about it for three days.
Not obsessively — not the way she had thought about the divergence map in the early weeks, with the focused anxiety of someone whose navigation tool was becoming unreliable. More like: a question that had been sitting at the back of her attention, waiting for the right moment to become a conversation.
He had revealed, in a restaurant in Mapo, that he remembered a sentence she had said four weeks ago while everyone else was thinking about something else. He had been carrying it for a month without saying so, had acted on it without announcing the action, had trusted — implicitly, without declaration — that she would want to go somewhere like the place she had described.
He had given her that, unintentionally. And she had been holding something back from him, intentionally, for four months.
Not everything, she thought. She couldn't tell him everything — the system was explicit about the consequences of revealing the full truth, and even setting the system aside, the full truth was the kind of thing that required a context she didn't have the language to provide. But there was a piece of the truth she had been holding that she could give him. That she had been meaning to give him for some time, if she was honest with herself.
She went to the training room after the morning work was done and started on the precision exercises she had been developing for the past two months. Twenty minutes in, the door opened.
She finished the sequence she was in the middle of and said, without turning: "I want to explain about the artifact."
---
He had come in and taken his position along the wall — she had heard the familiar pattern of it, the specific sequence of sounds that meant he had arrived and settled. When she turned, he was sitting with one knee up, not working on anything, looking at her with the quality of attention she had catalogued as: he came here intending to be in this room, not passing through.
"The item I used in the A-plus gate," she said. "And before that, after the Amplifier boss room." She paused. "It has a specific function. It interacts with dark-attribute abilities and — moderates them. Stabilizes the output when the ability is running above its controlled threshold."
She was being careful with the language. True, as far as it went. Not complete.
"I've had it since before I joined the team," she said. "I didn't tell anyone about it because — " She stopped. The honest end of that sentence was complicated. "Because it seemed like the kind of thing that would raise questions I wasn't sure how to answer."
She looked at him. He was looking at her with the steady, receiving attention he used when he was taking something in rather than analyzing it — the distinction she had learned to make over months of watching him process things.
"I should have told you earlier," she said. "You have the most relevant need to know."
The training room was quiet around them. Outside, she could hear the building's mid-morning sounds — the distant voices of Ha-eun and Min-seok in the common room, the ventilation running, the particular acoustic quality of a Tuesday.
She waited for the questions. She had prepared for several: where did you get it, how does it work precisely, why didn't you tell us, what else are you not telling us. She had answers for some of them — partial answers, answers that were true as far as they went. She had been working out which questions she could handle and which ones would require more truth than she had clearance to give.
He was quiet for a moment.
Then: "You had it when you needed it."
Not a question. An observation — the same flat, factual delivery he used for most things. But the content of it was not a question, and the questions she had prepared for were not the question he had asked.
She looked at him.
"Yes," she said.
"That's enough," he said.
---
She held this for a moment.
That's enough. Three words that were doing a great deal of work. He was not saying: I believe your explanation, which had not been a full explanation. He was not saying: I have no more questions, because she suspected he had more questions and was simply not asking them. He was saying something closer to: I have observed you for four months, and I have made a decision about you that does not require the complete set of facts, and this conversation is consistent with that decision.
He was trusting her. Not because she had given him sufficient grounds — she hadn't, not really. Because he had decided to, which was a different process entirely, and one that she understood was not a thing he did easily or often.
She thought about the Hunter from before. The one who had approached him out of curiosity, who had seen what he was willing to share, and had used it. She thought about what it had cost him to trust that person, and what it had cost him when that trust was returned with betrayal, and what it meant that he was sitting in this room now and saying: that's enough.
She owed him more of the truth. She knew this. She was carrying things he deserved to know, and she had been carrying them for months, and the weight of it was something she had been managing with varying degrees of success. She could not give him all of it today — the system, the mission, the specifics of what she was and where she had come from. But she could give him this.
"The artifact works better," she said, "when the person using it — " She stopped, reorganized. The technical version of this was easier to say than the true version. She said the true version. "When the person using it cares about the person who needs it."
She kept her voice even. She had been practicing keeping her voice even when she said things that cost her something, and she had gotten better at it, though not as good as him.
He looked at her.
The training room was very quiet.
She watched him receive the thing she had just said — not the technical description, the actual content of it. Watched it move through the careful, controlled expression and reach the place where things landed when they were real.
He didn't say anything. She hadn't expected him to. Some things didn't want a response, they wanted to be received, and he understood this better than anyone she had met.
---
He stood after a while — not abruptly, the way he stood when he had made a decision and was acting on it. He gathered the few things he had brought and moved toward the door.
At the threshold, he stopped.
Not the courage pause. Not the doorway calculation. The pause of someone who had just assembled something and was confirming the assembly before he spoke.
"You had it when you came," he said. His back was to her, which was how he said the hardest things. "Before you knew it would be needed."
She looked at his back. At the line of his shoulders, the stillness he maintained even when he was putting pieces together.
"Yes," she said.
He was quiet for a moment. She could see, from where she was sitting, the slight tension in his posture — not hostile, not suspicious. Something more like: he was holding a puzzle piece against the space it might fit and was not yet certain of the result.
"I don't know what that means," he said. "About how you knew."
She could have said: I don't either. She could have said: it's complicated. Both would have been partially true. What she said instead was:
"I know." Two words. Not deflection — acknowledgment. The same words she had been giving him for months, returned now in the context of: I know that you don't know. I know that I'm not giving you the complete picture. I know that you're trusting me anyway, and I am aware of what that costs you, and I am not taking it lightly.
He stood at the threshold for another breath.
Then he nodded — the small, complete nod — and walked out.
She sat in the training room and looked at the doorway he had left through and held the particular weight of being trusted by someone who had learned that trust was a thing that got you hurt.
He was assembling something, she thought. From the artifact, from the questions he wasn't asking, from four months of paying attention to a person who had more context than she'd revealed. She didn't know what he was assembling. She knew it was moving toward the truth, piece by piece, the way things moved when someone was patient and observant and had decided the answer was worth finding.
She thought: when he finds it, I need to be the one who tells him. Not the system. Not an accident. Me.
She didn't know how to do that yet. She knew it was something she was going to have to figure out.
She went back to her practice and let the morning continue around her, and carried that knowledge alongside everything else she had been carrying, and told herself: not yet. But soon.
