Saturday again.
The building had its weekend quality — the particular quiet of a space that was built for more than two people and contained, at the moment, exactly two. She had arrived at nine with the lunchboxes and the supply projection she was nearly finished with and the habit of coming here on Saturdays that she had stopped questioning sometime around month three.
He had arrived at ten, as he did.
They had been working for two hours. The morning was going the way Saturday mornings went now — unhurried, parallel, the silence between them the texture she had stopped noticing as anything other than comfortable. Outside, the city was doing its December Saturday things. Inside, she was in the middle of a calculation she had been in the middle of for fifteen minutes without actually making any progress on.
She put her pen down.
She had been thinking, in the background, about what she wanted to say and whether she was going to say it, and the calculation on the page had been the thing her eyes were pointing at while her attention was elsewhere. This was not, she had learned, a state that resolved by continuing to point her eyes at the calculation.
"I want to tell you something," she said. "About where I came from."
---
He set down what he was doing. Not dramatically — with the same unhurried motion he used for everything, the motion of someone who had decided to give something his full attention and was arranging himself to do that. He looked at her. He waited.
She had been constructing the story in various forms for five months — the cover version, the outline version, the version with enough truth in it to be useful and enough omission to be safe. She had given different versions to different people for different reasons. What she found herself doing now, looking at him across the common table on a Saturday morning, was setting all those versions aside.
"I worked in an office," she said. "In a city. The kind of work that didn't have clear edges — it started and then it didn't stop, because there was always more of it and I had learned, somewhere along the way, that the more of it I did the less visible I was to the people I was doing it for, but if I stopped they would notice the absence and I preferred the invisibility to the notice."
She was looking at the table. Not avoiding him — organizing the telling, the way she organized things when there were a lot of pieces and the order mattered.
"I read a lot. Late at night, at the desk, because there was always more work but sometimes I needed something that wasn't work, and the reading was the thing I could do without leaving the desk." She paused. "I read stories. The kind where things resolved. Where the people in them got to the end and the end was good."
She looked up at him.
"I died," she said. "Not metaphorically. I was at the desk at two in the morning with the work still open and the next moment — wasn't there. And then I was here."
The room received this.
She had not said this to anyone before. Not the Ha-eun version, not the dinner version. This version — the actual one, the one without scaffolding — she had been carrying alone for five months, and saying it out loud in the presence of another person was a different thing from having it in her head. It had weight it hadn't had before. It also had, she found, considerably less fear attached to it than she had expected.
He's not going to use this, she thought. He is not that person. I have known this for a long time and saying it out loud is just — confirmation of what I already knew.
Si-woo was quiet. Not the processing quiet or the deciding quiet — the receiving quiet she had learned to distinguish from the rest. He was sitting with what she had said the way he sat with things that mattered, which was: fully, without editing it into something smaller.
She kept going.
"At first I wanted to go back. I thought — this is temporary. This is something that has an exit, and I need to find it and take it." She looked at her hands. "I'm not sure I still think that. Not in the same way."
She meant the world — the team, the work, the particular quality of a life that had become real in ways she hadn't anticipated. She meant the things she had learned here about what she was capable of and what she needed and what she had been wrong about. She meant all of that, and she also meant him, and she was not going to say the last part out loud, but she thought he understood it anyway.
She looked at him. He was looking at her with the expression she had finally stopped trying to categorize — the one that was too simple for categories, that existed before naming.
"What are you most afraid of?" he asked.
The question arrived simply, without preamble, in the same even voice he used for everything. Not a therapeutic prompt. Not a deflection. A genuine question, asked by someone who had been paying attention for five months and had identified something he wanted to know.
She considered it.
The true answer was complicated. She was afraid of the system's penalty clause, which was the oldest fear and the one that had gotten quieter over time but hadn't gone away. She was afraid of the mission completing and what completion meant. She was afraid of the version of this story that ended with her leaving, or being removed, or disappearing the way things disappeared when the purpose that had brought them had been fulfilled.
But those were the fears she had been managing. The fear underneath them — the one she had stopped pretending she didn't have — was simpler.
"Finishing what I came here to do," she said. "And then not having a reason to stay."
The words landed in the room with the specific weight of things said for the first time that had been true for a long time.
She held his gaze. He held hers. The December light came through the windows at its usual winter angle and the city continued outside and the building held its Saturday silence around them.
"You have a reason," he said.
Two words. Delivered in the same even, unhurried voice he used for everything — for logistics and briefings and observations about the weather and all the hundreds of things he had said in all the rooms they had shared. The same voice.
Different weight.
She looked at him. She thought about what those two words were and were not. They were not a declaration. They were not a promise. They were not the kind of thing that required a response or invited one — they were the kind of thing that was said because it was true and because the person it was being said to needed to know that it was true, stated the way he stated facts: flatly, without decoration, as though the truth of it was self-evident and he was simply making it available.
You have a reason, she thought. Present tense. Not you could have one, not I hope you find one. Have. Already.
She looked at him for a moment longer. Then she picked up her pen and looked at the projection on the table and found the calculation she had abandoned twenty minutes ago and returned to it.
He returned to his equipment.
The morning continued. The city continued. The building held them in its Saturday quiet and asked nothing of either of them, and she worked through the projection with the particular clarity of someone who had just set something down that they had been carrying for a long time, and found that the numbers made sense in a way they hadn't before she started talking.
She finished the calculation.
Outside, the December afternoon was beginning.
