CHAPTER 13 — THE WRONG KIND OF EASY
She had worked through the weekend.
Not because she was supposed to — the Meridian brief had been handed to her on Friday afternoon and the first working session was Monday morning and there was no expectation that she would have produced anything by then. But she had opened the file on Saturday evening, after the market and after the film she had promised herself, and she had not closed it again until midnight, and on Sunday she had gone back to it after lunch and stayed until the light outside changed from afternoon to evening without her particularly noticing.
This was what interesting problems did to her. It had always been this way — the specific quality of a problem that had genuine depth to it, that did not resolve easily at the surface level but opened up the more you pressed on it. She had missed this. She had not known, precisely, how much she had missed it until she was inside it again.
The Meridian brief was not asking for an identity system.
She had understood this on Saturday evening, reading between the language of the brief rather than the language itself. Meridian was a company that had a strong identity already — clear, specific, recognised in its current sector. What they were asking for was not a new face. They were asking for a way of understanding what they were becoming, expressed in a form that their executive board could show to a room and say: *this is what we have decided.* Not: here is how we look. Here is what we believe.
That was a different problem. A harder one. And harder problems, in her experience, produced better work, when they produced work at all.
She was at her workstation at seven thirty, the brief open on her primary monitor and a set of rough position statements she had written longhand over the weekend on the desk beside her. She read them back with the slightly detached quality she tried to bring to her own work — as if someone else had made them, which was the closest she could get to objectivity about her own thinking. They were not polished. They were not meant to be polished yet. They were meant to be the closest she could get, in language, to the idea she was trying to build toward.
Tang Xin arrived at eight forty-five. She looked at the longhand notes.
"Weekend work," she observed. Not a question.
"I couldn't not," Wanqing said.
Tang Xin poured herself coffee. "That's usually a good sign."
"Or a terrible one."
"For you, specifically," Tang Xin said, sitting down, "I think it's the good kind."
---
She took the lift to the forty-second floor at nine o'clock.
Not the main lift — the internal one, the one that required the access card Zhou Cheng had given her on Friday afternoon with the specific efficiency of someone completing a task that had been anticipated before it was requested. She had not used it before. Using it now felt different from the formal route she had taken to the briefings — less mediated, more direct, the kind of access that assumed a working relationship rather than a managed one.
The executive floor was quieter in the morning than the floors below. Different rhythm — the kind of quiet that was not the absence of activity but the presence of focused work, each office its own contained system.
She had been told his office was at the end of the corridor.
It was.
The door was open. She knocked on the frame.
He was standing at his secondary monitor — not sitting, standing, which she had come to understand was how he worked when he was thinking rather than executing. He had a document open that she could see from the doorway was dense with annotations in the narrow margins. He looked up.
"Come in," he said. "Close the door."
She closed the door.
His office was larger than she had expected and less formal — a desk that was clearly a working surface rather than a statement, two additional screens, a long whiteboard along one wall that had been recently used and incompletely erased. The ghost of previous work visible in the grey traces of marker. A bookshelf on the far wall that was not decorative. A window with the same forty-second-floor view she had seen in the meeting room, but differently angled — showing more of the city to the east, the direction the morning light came from.
She had not been in here before. She looked around in the quick, methodical way she looked at all new spaces, mapping it, and then she put her bag down and opened her laptop.
"Preliminary direction," she said. "I'll walk you through it."
He turned from his monitor and sat down, which meant he was done with whatever he had been doing and was ready for this. This was a thing she had learned to read in him over the weeks — the specific quality of his transitions, the way he moved between modes without the performative signals most people used to indicate they were paying attention.
She began.
---
She had prepared it as she prepared everything: with care for the logic rather than the presentation. No deck. Notes and the longhand sheets and the specific quality of conviction that came from two days of working something through until it was clear.
"Meridian doesn't need a new face," she said. "They need a new frame. The brief is asking us to help them understand what they're becoming — not represent it, understand it. That's a philosophy problem that happens to require a visual language, not the other way around."
He was quiet.
"The pitch should be structured around a single question," she continued. "Not *what does Meridian look like?* but *what does Meridian believe?* If we can answer that with specificity — not in language, in form, in the visual logic of a system that embodies that belief — then the identity follows naturally. The board won't be approving a logo. They'll be approving a position statement that happens to be expressed visually."
She stopped. She waited.
He looked at the notes she had spread on the table between them.
"You're thinking like a designer," he said.
She had expected a version of this. "Walk me through what's wrong with that."
"Meridian's board is made up of four people with operational backgrounds and two with financial ones." He stood up and moved to the whiteboard — not with the posture of someone about to lecture, but with the posture of someone who thought better when they were moving. "A pitch framed around *what do we believe* will read to those six people as a conversation they're not equipped to participate in. They will approve or reject it based on whether it feels right to them — which is not a reliable basis for a six-month engagement."
"So you want to give them a framework instead of a vision."
"I want to give them something they can make a decision about."
"A decision framework without a vision behind it is empty strategy," she said. "It answers the question *how* without ever asking *why.* The board will approve it and then six months later they'll look at the outputs and say it doesn't feel like them, and they'll be right, and we'll have done technically correct work that failed."
He looked at her.
She looked back.
"That's the problem you're trying to solve," he said. "That's not the problem the brief is asking us to solve."
"The brief," she said, "is asking us to win the pitch. I'm telling you how to win it. A board that approves a framework they don't believe in will not extend a six-month engagement. A board that approves something they recognise as true about themselves will."
A silence.
He moved away from the window — not abruptly, not with the quality of someone ending a conversation, but with the quality of someone who was thinking and needed to do something with their body while they thought. He stood at the far end of the table.
She stood at the near end.
The table between them was the correct professional distance. She was aware of it as professional distance rather than just distance, which was a distinction that had not required her conscious attention in the first weeks and was now, apparently, requiring it.
"The board approved a repositioning strategy," he said. "Meridian's decision-makers are not coming to this pitch to have their beliefs identified. They are coming to this pitch to see whether Lu Corporation can do the work they need done. Those are different things."
"They're not different things," she said. "They're the same thing expressed in different vocabularies. Every executive board that approves a creative partner is making a belief decision — they're deciding whether they trust the other party's understanding of who they are. You give them a framework they can tick boxes against, and you're asking them to approve the boxes. You give them something that shows you already understand them, and you're asking them to say yes to a relationship."
He was quiet for long enough that she thought she had either convinced him or lost him entirely, and she was not sure which.
"That is," he said, "a much harder thing to pitch."
"Yes," she said. "It's also the only one worth pitching."
He turned to the whiteboard and picked up a marker.
---
He wrote a sentence on the board.
She read it.
It was a reframing of the problem — not hers, not his, something that came from the space between them. A way of describing what the pitch needed to do that held both of what they had been arguing for: the decision structure he was insisting on and the belief-system she was insisting on, expressed as a single axis rather than two competing priorities.
She looked at it for a moment.
*That's what I've been trying to say,* she thought. And then, before she had decided to say it: "That's what I've been trying to say."
He looked at her. "No it isn't. But it's closer."
She was quiet for a second. Then she reached past him — not quite past him, close enough that she was aware of the spatial relationship, the specific nearness of crossing into someone's working space — and wrote three words to the right of his sentence.
He read them.
He did not say anything. He made a small sound that was not quite agreement and not quite surprise — the specific sound of someone whose thinking had been usefully interrupted. He added two more words below hers.
She looked at the board.
The whole of it — his sentence, her three words, his two additions — was the thing. The actual thing. The framing that made the pitch possible, that made the relationship between vision and decision-structure visible and usable. She could see the entire pitch from where she was standing, could see the six-week arc of it, could see the deck and the system and the visual language all implied by what was written on the board in their combined handwriting.
She had not had this feeling — the specific feeling of a thing arriving whole — in a very long time.
---
They worked for another forty minutes.
Not debating anymore. Working — the specific mode of two people who have found the through-line and are following it, building forward rather than arguing about direction. She proposed and he extended. He asked a question and she answered in a way that opened the next question.
There was a specific satisfaction to this kind of work — not the satisfaction of producing something, but the satisfaction of thinking in real time alongside someone who was keeping pace. She had experienced it rarely. With some of her best collaborators at the studio, in the years before. With no one since.
The whiteboard accumulated: arrows connecting concepts, shorthand that they had developed in the room rather than bringing into it, the specific notation of two people building a shared vocabulary on the fly. He wrote in precise, economical marks. She wrote in the looser hand of someone who thought visually even when writing words. The interleaving of the two was visible — the places where his precision had given her thinking a spine, the places where her looseness had given his thinking room to expand.
She saw this. She did not comment on it.
The rhythm was fast and specific, no unnecessary language, the shorthand that developed between people who were paying close attention to the same thing.
She was aware, somewhere in the peripheral register, that this was not how she worked with most people. That most collaborations required more scaffolding — more explanation, more translation, more management of the gap between how two people understood a problem. This required almost none of that. He followed her thinking and she followed his and where they diverged they said so immediately and without ceremony.
She did not think about what this meant. She put it in the category of things that were happening and would need to be considered at some point, and she kept working.
By ten forty, the whiteboard held a full pitch framework. Rough — notes and arrows and the specific kind of non-linear notation that design thinking produced — but complete in its logic. The bones of something that could become very good.
He stepped back and looked at it.
"This is the pitch," he said.
She looked at it with him.
"Yes," she said.
They stood at the same distance from the board, looking at what they had made. The framework in his handwriting and hers, interleaved — the places where his sentence had become her phrase had become his extension had become something that did not belong to either of them specifically.
A beat of looking at it together.
Then she picked up her bag.
"I'll have a first deck draft by Wednesday," she said, which was the correct professional statement and was true and was also the mechanism she was using to close the moment rather than let it continue into territory she was not ready for.
"Wednesday works," he said.
She walked out.
---
In the corridor, she passed the glass wall of his office.
She looked back without entirely deciding to. The whiteboard was visible through the glass — the framework still on it, the combined notation of two hours of working together. From this angle she could see the whole of it at once: the logic, the structure, the argument.
She could not, from here, tell where his handwriting ended and hers began.
She stood there for slightly longer than was necessary, looking at it. The framework — their framework, built in the space of a morning from an argument neither of them had won — was, objectively, the correct pitch. She knew this with the specific certainty she trusted: the feeling of a solution that was right not because it ticked the required boxes but because it was true.
She also knew, standing here looking at handwriting that had become indistinguishable, that she was in territory she had not planned to enter.
She turned away and walked to the lift.
In the lift, descending, she held this.
She had been telling herself, for six weeks, that the specific care she was taking around this situation was about professional management — about maintaining the boundaries appropriate to working with someone who had been, once, something else. And that was true. But it was not the whole truth, and she was honest enough, on a Tuesday morning at ten forty-seven, to admit that the thing she was actually managing was more specific than that.
She was managing the fact that working with him was easy in the wrong way.
Not easy because it required no effort. Difficult problems with interesting people required effort. She was doing that. She was doing it well.
Easy because it felt natural. Because the pace of it and the logic of it and the specific frequency at which their thinking moved were aligned in a way that did not require adjustment. She had worked with many people in her career. This was not how it usually felt.
She had known this about him. She had known it six years ago and she had buried the knowledge with everything else she had buried, because it was attached to everything else, because you could not keep one part of a thing and set aside the rest.
The knowledge was not buried anymore.
She was going to need to think about what to do with that.
The lift opened at twenty-six.
Tang Xin looked up from her workstation. She read Wanqing's face with the specific accuracy she brought to reading rooms — all rooms, including the ones made of people.
"Good session?" she said.
"Productive," Wanqing said. She sat down and opened her laptop. "We have a pitch framework."
"How long did the arguing take?"
Wanqing paused for one beat. "About forty minutes."
Tang Xin nodded. "Faster than I expected," she said, and went back to her own work, and did not say anything else, and was exactly right in not saying anything else.
Wanqing pulled up the Meridian brief and began to translate the whiteboard into a working document.
She did this for the rest of the morning. She did it well. And in the background, at the level just below active thought, the thing she had admitted to herself in the lift continued its quiet, patient existence, waiting for a moment she was ready to do something about it.
She was not ready yet, not quite.
She was, she understood now, less far from ready than she had been last week.
