CHAPTER 15 — THE WRONG WOMAN
She had decided, on the bus home the previous evening, not to decide anything.
This was a technique she had learned and trusted: the deliberate suspension of analysis when analysis was premature, when the data was insufficient for a conclusion, when the most honest thing she could do was to sit with what she had observed and let it settle before she tried to interpret it. She was good at this. She had not always been — it had taken practice and the specific discipline of learning that her first interpretations were not always her most accurate ones, and that the interval between observation and conclusion was not wasted time but necessary time.
What she had observed last night did not yet have a stable interpretation.
She arrived at her workstation at eight o'clock, made coffee, and opened the rebranding files. The phase-two work was at a point that required focused attention — she had three visual system decisions to finalize, two of which she had been circling around for a week and one of which had resolved itself during the previous afternoon when she had not been thinking about it directly. She worked on the resolved one first, because resolved things benefited from being completed before they unresolved, and then she moved to the first of the two she was still circling.
Tang Xin arrived at eight forty, assessed the floor and Wanqing's posture and screen with her usual efficiency, and did not ask anything. This was the thing about Tang Xin that Wanqing had come to rely on in a way she had not articulated even to herself: she was accurately calibrated. She knew when not asking was the correct response, and she did not make not-asking into a performance of sensitivity. She simply did not ask and got on with her own work.
They worked alongside each other in the comfortable silence of people who had occupied adjacent spaces for long enough that the silence did not require management.
At ten-fourteen, a notification appeared in the company-wide system.
---
She read it once.
*Miss Bai Yueru will be visiting the office this morning as part of the ongoing partnership engagement between the Bai and Lu families. Please extend a warm welcome.*
The language was the language of corporate communications — smooth, specific, and carrying exactly as much information as it intended to carry and not a word more. She understood what a *partnership engagement between families* meant in the context of Lu Corporation. She had understood it since Tang Xin had told her about the engagement announcement expected this quarter, six weeks ago, while they had been sitting in a coffee shop on the edge of a market.
She read the notification a second time.
Then she put the notification away — in the specific internal location she had developed for things that required attention but not right now — and returned to the visual system decision.
She was ninety percent of the way through the second circling decision when she heard the lift.
---
She did not look up immediately.
This was a practice she had been maintaining with variable success since the first week: not responding to sounds or presences until there was a professional reason to do so. She had been more successful at it in the early weeks, when the discipline had been necessary and she had applied it rigorously. Less successful in the recent weeks, as the managed distance had shifted into something that required a different kind of management entirely.
She looked up at ninety seconds.
Bai Yueru was at the entrance to the creative floor with Zhou Cheng at her elbow, moving through the space with the specific quality of someone who had been in many offices and knew how to navigate them without either overdoing the interest or underdoing the engagement. She was wearing a different coat from the day they had briefly met — this one darker, the same quality of deliberate understatement. She was looking at the workstations and the pinboards and the physical evidence of creative work in progress with the expression of someone who found it genuinely interesting.
This was not what Wanqing had expected.
She had not thought about Bai Yueru with any particular clarity in the weeks since the first glimpse — had not permitted the thinking, had filed the name in the same closed room as everything else connected to the events of six years ago and the situation of the present. What she had carried, without examining it closely, was an image constructed from a photograph and a name and the weight of what that photograph had meant.
The person moving through the creative floor was not an image.
She was approximately Wanqing's age, perhaps slightly younger. She moved with the specific economy of someone who had grown up in rooms where every gesture was observed and had learned, from that, to make only the gestures she intended. She looked at the work on the walls with genuine attention — not the polite scanning of someone performing interest, but the focused look of someone actually reading what she was seeing. When one of the digital leads described a project detail, she asked a follow-up question that indicated she had understood the first explanation and wanted the next layer.
Wanqing noted this.
She also noted something else: the quality of Bai Yueru's composure, which was not the composure of someone who was comfortable. It was the composure of someone who was managing. The specific quality of a person performing a role with professionalism because professionalism was what the situation required, not because the role was one they had chosen.
She recognised it.
She was not sure she liked recognising it.
She was not certain what she had expected — something more performed, perhaps, more deliberate, the curated quality of someone making a point. What she saw instead was a person moving through a space and being present to it, and this was disorienting in the specific way of something that did not fit its expected shape.
Zhou Cheng was guiding the tour — a brief pause at the visual systems wall, a conversation with one of the digital leads, a moment at the window that had the best view of the project work in progress. Professional, purposeful, the logic of it clear.
When they reached Wanqing's workstation, Zhou Cheng said: "Miss Su is our lead creative for the rebranding and Meridian projects."
Bai Yueru looked at her.
It was not the look from the first time they had briefly met in this space — that had been a glancing assessment, the quick mutual evaluation of strangers. This one was more sustained. Deliberate.
"Miss Su," she said. "I've been hearing about the Meridian pitch."
Her voice was level. Wanqing's voice was level.
"It's at an early stage," Wanqing said. "The pitch deck goes to Meridian's team on Friday."
"Lu Jingheng speaks highly of the work." A slight pause. "He doesn't say that often."
The sentence landed in the space between them with the specific quality of a sentence that was doing more than one thing. It was accurate information — she had no reason to doubt that — and it was also a measurement. A way of establishing the coordinates of a situation. Wanqing looked at Bai Yueru directly and understood, from the quality of the looking, that Bai Yueru was measuring exactly what she thought she was measuring.
She was not doing it with hostility.
That was the thing that surprised her. She had been, without fully acknowledging it, prepared for hostility. A certain kind of social combat conducted in the language of pleasantries. She had seen it before, had navigated it before, had the vocabulary for it. What she was encountering instead was something closer to — assessment. The specific quality of someone trying to understand the shape of a situation rather than trying to control it.
"Good work tends to speak for itself," Wanqing said.
"Yes," Bai Yueru said. "It does."
A beat.
"I hope the pitch goes well," Bai Yueru said. "Meridian would be a significant partnership for the Group."
"That's the intention," Wanqing said.
Bai Yueru nodded once — the nod of someone who had completed what they came to do — and moved on with Zhou Cheng to the next station.
Wanqing watched her go.
She did not know what to make of that conversation. She did not try to make something of it immediately. She turned back to her screen and sat with the visual system decision and let the conversation settle into the general category of *things that have occurred and require thought* without trying to process it before she was ready.
---
He arrived at eleven forty-three.
She knew he was on the floor before she saw him — the specific quality of the room shifting, the peripheral awareness she had developed and was no longer pretending not to have. She did not look up. She was in the middle of a decision that had been nearly resolving for an hour and had, in the past ten minutes, become actually resolving, and she was not going to interrupt the resolution for anything that did not require immediate attention.
She heard him stop.
A beat of stillness — the kind that happened when someone encountered an unexpected element in a familiar environment.
"Miss Bai." His voice carried across the floor with the neutral quality she had learned to read — not cold, not warm, the register of professional courtesy extended to someone who occupied a defined relationship with his work context. "I wasn't aware you were visiting the creative floor."
"A brief tour," Bai Yueru said. Her voice had the same quality as his — matched in register, as if both of them were following the same protocol. "Very illuminating."
"I hope it was useful." A brief pause. "Excuse me — I need to speak with Zhou Cheng about the logistics brief."
And that was it.
Wanqing saved her file. She did this without examining why she needed to do something with her hands in this moment, which was itself information, which she filed.
She had been in this building for eight weeks. In those eight weeks she had observed Lu Jingheng in more professional contexts than she could easily count — meetings, reviews, the brief exchanges in corridors and lifts and the sustained working sessions that had accumulated over the past two weeks into something that had its own texture. She had observed him with board members, with division heads, with people he was clearly more comfortable with and people he was clearly less comfortable with and people he treated with the specific efficiency of someone managing an obligation.
She had observed him with her.
And she had observed him just now with Bai Yueru.
He had not been cold. He had not been warm. He had been — she searched for the precise word — *absent*. Not absent physically. Absent in the way of someone going through the correct motions of a situation while not being present inside it. The way she had been in rooms sometimes, in the early years — technically present, functionally elsewhere.
She did not know what to do with this.
She had spent six years with a story about what had happened, and one of the foundations of that story was that he had chosen something. Chosen a direction, a family obligation, a woman who represented what his family wanted. The story required that choice to have had content — that there had been a preference, an intention, a gravitational pull toward something that had pulled him away from her.
What she had just watched did not look like a person in the presence of something he had chosen.
She was aware that this was a reading of a ninety-second professional exchange, which was not sufficient data for the conclusion she was skirting. She was also aware that she had been observing this person with close attention for eight weeks and that her readings of him had, in that time, been consistently accurate in ways that mattered.
She did not complete the thought.
She pressed save again.
The visual system decision she had been circling all morning was open on her primary monitor. The resolved elements were visible — she could see clearly which parts of the system were working and which were not yet right. She was, under ordinary circumstances, good at this: at seeing the work for what it was rather than what she wanted it to be. It required a specific quality of detachment that she had developed deliberately, over years, because detachment from one's own work was a professional skill that did not come naturally to anyone who cared about what they made.
She could not look at the work right now. She was looking at it, but she was not seeing it.
What she was seeing was a ninety-second exchange, played back with the specific fidelity that certain memories had — not the important ones, not the ones you tried to hold onto, but the ones that arrived complete and stayed complete because something in your nervous system had flagged them as significant.
The register of his voice with Bai Yueru. The specific calibration of it — identical, she would have said, to the register he had used in the first formal briefings. The register of professional competence and contained attention and nothing further. The register she had learned, over eight weeks, to distinguish from the other registers — the working register, the register of genuine engagement with a problem, the register of someone saying *no I know* very quietly at the end of a brief.
He had not used any of those registers.
She was aware that she was reading significance into a professional interaction. She was also aware that she had been reading his registers with accuracy for eight weeks, and that her readings had not been wrong.
---
The floor returned to its normal rhythm.
Lu Jingheng went with Zhou Cheng to the logistics discussion at the far end of the floor. Bai Yueru completed her tour and departed with the same quality of composed efficiency she had arrived with. Wanqing saved her work for the third time in twenty minutes — she noted this, the specific nervous system response of saving things when she was unsettled, a habit she had developed in the years when losing work had been a real risk and had retained it apparently as a general anxiety management tool.
She went to get water.
On her way back, she passed Tang Xin's workstation. Tang Xin was working on something that required close attention to colour relationships, her head slightly tilted, the expression she wore when assessing visual information. She did not look up.
After approximately fifteen minutes, she spoke.
"He's never been warm with her," she said. Not to Wanqing specifically — to the general air of the floor, the way she sometimes offered observations. "In any meeting I've seen them together. Any context." She turned a page in her reference file. "I've been here four years. It's been the same for four years."
Wanqing sat down.
"I noticed," she said.
A moment.
"I thought you might," Tang Xin said.
She turned back to her colour reference. The conversation was over, which meant it had completed its function, which was the thing Tang Xin did with conversations — she said what she had assessed needed to be said, and then she stopped.
Wanqing looked at her screen.
---
She worked until four-thirty.
It was earlier than she usually left, and she was aware of this as she gathered her things — the specific signal of her own system telling her that it had been a day that required more processing than ordinary days and that continuing to sit in front of a screen was not processing. She had learned to listen to this signal. It had taken a long time to learn it and she was not going to stop listening now.
The observation she had made would not leave her alone.
Not the conversation with Bai Yueru — that had settled, more or less, into the category of *complicated people in complicated situations behaving with more complexity than expected.* Bai Yueru was not the person she had imagined. She did not yet know what that meant.
What would not leave her alone was simpler and harder.
She had built, over six years, a specific understanding of why things had ended. An architecture of explanation that accounted for what had happened — for the photograph, for the words, for the specific sequence of events that had collapsed something she had believed was real. The architecture had a logic to it. The logic required certain things to be true.
One of those things was that he had been moving toward something.
That he had made a choice.
She stood at the bus stop with the autumn air doing its early-dark November thing and asked herself, for the first time without managing the question away: *what if the choice wasn't his?*
She did not have data for this.
She had a ninety-second observation of a professional exchange between two people whose relationship she did not fully understand, and she had eight weeks of close attention to a person whose way of being in the world she was learning with uncomfortable accuracy, and she had a comment from Tang Xin who had been watching this situation for four years.
It was not data.
It was the edge of a question she had not previously let herself stand at.
She stood there now, at the bus stop, with the sky going dark and the city doing its early evening reconfiguration, and she did not step back from the edge and she did not step over it. She stood at it. She let herself stand at it.
The bus came.
She got on.
