CHAPTER 20 — THE QUESTION SHE COULDN'T UN-ASK
She had known, when she woke up Saturday morning, that today was the day.
Not with dread — that was important to note, to herself, because she had spent three years learning to distinguish between the specific quality of approaching something because it was time and the specific quality of approaching something because anxiety had won. This was the first kind. She had been carrying the file and its four items for a week, and she had been carrying the incomplete sentence for longer, and she had been patient with herself about it because she had learned that patience was not the same as avoidance, and she had genuinely needed the week.
She had had the week.
The December light was doing something unusual — the specific quality of winter sun that appeared occasionally in the cold months, low-angled and pale and throwing long shadows across everything. She had made coffee. She had sat with it for twenty minutes without opening anything, because the twenty minutes were necessary, because approaching something that required her full attention required first arriving at a state in which her full attention was available.
She was there now.
She opened her laptop and found the file.
---
The list looked the same as it had when she had made it.
*Things he has known without being told:* *1. That I don't soften things for rooms.* *2. Which study I thought was right without my saying so.* *3. That I find the Meridian problem interesting in the specific way I find things interesting.* *4. Lily.*
Four items. She read them once, then a second time, then she did what she had been waiting to do — she followed the first one to where it led.
*"No. I know."*
She had said she did not soften things for rooms. He had said he knew this, in the specific way of someone for whom it was not new information, before she had confirmed it. She had attributed this, at the time, to professional acuity. She had filed it under: he is very good at reading people.
But she was now sitting with a different version of the question.
How early had he said it? Week two. She had been at Lu Corporation for fourteen days. In those fourteen days, she had been in three formal meetings, had submitted one framework document, and had had two one-on-one sessions with him, both of which were about the work rather than about her specifically. Fourteen days of professional interaction, in a high-stakes environment where everyone was performing a version of their best professional self, was not enough context to know with certainty whether someone softened things for rooms.
Unless you already knew.
She sat with this.
---
She did not reach for her laptop.
She reached, instead, for a legal pad that lived on the edge of her desk — the kind she used when she needed to think in a way that bypassed the screen, when the problem was one that needed the specific friction of a pen and paper to slow her thinking down to the speed at which she could actually follow it.
She drew a line across the top of the page.
On the left end she wrote: *Six years ago.* On the right end she wrote: *Now.* In between, she began to mark what she knew.
The relationship had been twenty-two months — she marked the start. The end had been a Tuesday in March, six years ago — she marked that. And in the space between the start and the end, she tried to reconstruct, as honestly as she could, what the preceding weeks had looked like.
There had been no withdrawal. This was the thing she had to be careful about, because memory was not reliable and she was aware that her memory of the period before the end had been shaped by the end itself — everything viewed through the filter of what came after. But she had been a careful observer even then, and she had kept notes, sometimes, in the way designers did — not diary entries, but small observations, phrases, things she had noticed.
She had not thrown those away.
Not because she had intended to keep them — because they had been in a notebook she had continued to use for work, and by the time she had reached the pages that contained the personal observations, she had not been able to bring herself to tear them out. The notebook had gone into a box. The box had moved with her twice. She had not opened it since.
She went to the shelf where the box was.
---
The notebook was near the bottom.
She took it to the desk and opened it to the pages from the relevant period — not the very end, before the end, the weeks when she had been writing down small observations about whatever she had been working on and occasionally about him, in the way that thoughts about people you were closely involved with intruded into other kinds of thinking.
Her handwriting from six years ago was slightly different. More rushed, less deliberate. The entries were short.
She found the week before the end.
There was nothing that, in retrospect, indicated anything was wrong. Notes about a project. A comment about the light at a particular time of day. One line: *LJ has a way of asking questions that makes you think he already knows the answer and wants to see how you'll get there.* She had written this because she had found it interesting, not because it had alarmed her.
She turned the page.
Two days before the end. One entry: *Missed his calls this afternoon — three of them. Will call back tonight.*
She had written *will call back tonight.*
She had not called back.
She sat with the page open in front of her for a long time.
---
Three calls in one afternoon.
She had been in a meeting for the first, on a bus for the second, standing in her kitchen for the third — she remembered this now, the specific clarity of a memory that had been stored carefully because it had mattered even before she had known why it mattered. She had looked at the screen showing his name and she had thought: *in a moment,* and then the moment had passed and she had not called back and two days later everything had ended.
For six years she had held this as: she had not called back, and therefore had missed his attempt to — what? She had never finished this sentence either, because finishing it required deciding what he had been calling to say, and deciding that had required a version of the story that she had not been ready to consider.
She was considering it now.
A person preparing to end a relationship did not call three times in one afternoon. She knew this not from theory but from the specific texture of how endings worked — the withdrawal, the distance, the managed decrease in contact that preceded the formal conclusion. She had watched this happen in other people's relationships. She had experienced her own version of it once, years before him, a slow cooling that had taken months and had been unmistakable in retrospect.
He had not been cooling. He had been calling.
She wrote this down on the legal pad, beneath the timeline.
*He called three times. Two days before. Not once, not twice. Three.*
Then she wrote the question that she had been approaching since the week before, the one she had started and stopped in the office on the afternoon she had found the email about the flowers, the one she had not finished because finishing it required committing to where it went.
She finished it now.
*If he was planning to end things, why did he call?*
---
She sat with the question.
Outside, the December Saturday was doing its quiet thing — the low winter light shifting as the morning moved toward afternoon, the city visible through the window in its weekend register. She had made a second cup of coffee at some point and it had gone cold. She did not notice.
She was thinking about Bai Yueru in the apartment.
She had been thinking about this, in fragments, since the week Bai Yueru had come to the office. She had been thinking about the specific quality of it — the way Bai Yueru had been sitting, the posture of someone who was *waiting* rather than someone who had been caught, the way she had looked up when the door opened with the expression of someone expecting an arrival rather than dreading one.
She had registered this at the time. She had not had a framework for it. She had the framework now.
Bai Yueru had been waiting because she had been told to wait. She had been there because someone had arranged for her to be there. She had not looked guilty because the situation had not been — had not been what Wanqing had understood it to be.
She did not complete this thought either.
The specific quality of what she was not completing was this: she had believed, for six years, that what she had walked into that evening was a betrayal. A choice that had been made before she arrived, that had been in place when she opened the door, that the three phone calls had perhaps been a last-minute impulse or a guilty conscience or some form of ambivalence that had resolved itself by the time she got there.
She had constructed a version of events in which he had chosen something else — had been in the process of choosing it — and the three calls were either not connected to that, or were connected to it in a way she had decided not to examine.
She was examining it now.
Three calls. The third one she had watched go to voicemail while she stood in her kitchen with her keys in her hand. If she had picked up — if she had called back — what would have happened? What had he been calling to say in an afternoon two days before everything ended?
She did not know. She had prevented herself from knowing by not calling back, and then events had prevented her from ever finding out, and in the six years since she had not asked the question because asking the question meant acknowledging that the call might have mattered, and acknowledging that it might have mattered meant the story she had been living inside might have been wrong in ways she had not been prepared to survive.
She was more prepared now.
Not because she could not follow it — she could see exactly where it led, the entire chain of it, from the three phone calls to Bai Yueru waiting to the words he had said in the voice he had used and what all of those things meant when assembled in a different order than the one she had been using for six years.
She could not complete it because completing it meant she had been wrong about the most important thing she had believed for six years, and being wrong about it did not feel the way being wrong usually felt. Being wrong usually felt like relief or embarrassment or the small shame of having made an incorrect claim. This felt like a room she had been living in for a long time turning out to have a door she had not known was there.
She needed to stand at the door before she opened it.
She was standing at it now.
---
She went to the kitchen. She poured out the cold coffee and made fresh. She stood at the window.
The city below was going about its Saturday business — people with bags, people without bags, the specific movement of a weekend in a cold month. She watched it without seeing it, which was sometimes what windows were for.
She thought about the list of four things. She thought about the three calls. She thought about Bai Yueru sitting in a way that did not look like guilt. She thought about the sentence she had written on the legal pad and the question at the bottom of it.
She did not think about him — not directly, not yet, because thinking about him directly required the framework to be more settled than it currently was, and the framework was not settled, the framework was actively in the process of being rebuilt, and she was not going to rush that process.
She had been patient for six years. She could be patient for a little longer.
---
In the late afternoon, she moved from the kitchen back to the desk.
The legal pad was still there. The question at the bottom of it was still there.
She looked at the bookshelf. Her eyes went to the typography book — she had moved it two weeks ago, she remembered now, to a more visible position, without explaining to herself why. She crossed to it and took it down. The cover, the bent corner she had never repaired. She opened it to a random page — a section on Bauhaus letterforms, dense with illustrations.
*You mentioned it once.*
He had found it because she had mentioned it once. Had looked for it, had found it at a secondhand shop, had set it on her desk without comment. Had said *you mentioned it once* as if that were a sufficient explanation for why he had spent the time to find it.
She held the book and thought about what it meant to remember something someone had mentioned once.
It meant you had been listening with the quality of attention that retained small things. It meant the small things had mattered enough to retain. It meant — she was standing at the door again, and this time she did not step back from it.
It meant he had known her. The version of her that mentioned obscure typography books in passing, the version that did not soften things for rooms, the version that needed fifteen minutes of quiet in the mornings, the version that avoided lily in enclosed spaces. He had known all of this. He had kept knowing it. Across six years and through whatever had happened in them, he had kept knowing the small specific things about who she was.
She set the book back on the shelf.
In a different position than before — not tucked away, not prominently displayed. Just placed, as if it were an ordinary book on an ordinary shelf, because that was what it was, except that it was also a piece of evidence, and she was not hiding her evidence anymore.
She was not hiding it from herself.
She thought about what she would need to do to find the answer.
She was not a detective. She did not have access to the records of six years ago, to the conversations that had happened outside her presence, to the logic of a decision that had been made by people who had not explained themselves to her. What she had was the question itself, and the small set of observations she had accumulated over three months, and the specific access she currently had — daily, professional — to the person at the centre of the question.
She was not going to confront him. Not yet — not with this level of incomplete information, not without understanding what she was actually asking, not until the question had had enough time to clarify into something she could articulate clearly.
But she was going to pay attention in a way she had not been allowing herself to pay attention. She was going to let herself see what was there rather than what she had been predisposed to see.
She had been told, once, by her therapist, that the hardest part of revising a long-held belief was not finding the new evidence but allowing the new evidence to count. The difficulty was in the permission — in granting yourself the right to be wrong about something you had been certain of.
She was granting herself that permission now.
---
Sunday passed in the way of days that were spent with something large being processed in the background of ordinary life — she did her laundry, she went for a walk, she called her mother and had a conversation that was pleasant and unremarkable and that she was grateful for in the specific way of someone who needed, occasionally, to be in contact with the people who had known her longest.
On Sunday evening she sat at her desk and looked at the legal pad.
The question at the bottom had not changed: *If he was planning to end things, why did he call?*
She had not answered it. She did not have enough information to answer it — only the question itself, and the three data points that had generated it, and the growing sense that the answer, when it arrived, was going to require her to revise something she had believed with certainty for a very long time.
She folded the legal pad in half and put it in the drawer under the desk. Not thrown away. Not framed on the wall. Just put somewhere accessible, where she could find it when she needed it.
Monday, she would go back to the office.
She would see him in the morning, most likely — the Meridian compliance result was due this week, which meant a brief at minimum. She would sit across a table from him, or beside a table from him, and she would look at him, and this time she would be looking at him with the question active in her mind, the question she could not un-ask, and she did not know what she was going to see.
She turned off the desk lamp.
She thought, as she went to bed, that whatever she saw on Monday, she was going to see it clearly. She had promised herself that much. She had been looking through old frameworks for too long, and the frameworks had stopped fitting, and she was done pretending they fit when they didn't.
She would see him clearly.
That was all she could promise herself, and it was enough.
