The cut happened in the eastern tunnel section, near a section of old pipe housing where the wall had shed a long strip of metal sheeting over the years, leaving a rusted edge at approximately waist height on the left side of the passage. Alden had noted the edge on previous transits and stepped around it automatically. On this transit, moving quickly after a signal from his contact network that indicated an increased patrol presence in the surface streets, he miscalculated the angle in the dark and the edge caught his left forearm.
It was not serious. He assessed it immediately with the matter-of-fact attention of someone who had experienced worse and knew the difference — a cut rather than a tear, deep enough to need attention but not deep enough to be immediately dangerous. He put pressure on it with his sleeve and kept moving until they reached the wide section of tunnel they used as a rest point.
Seren had been three steps behind him. She had seen the contact and heard the small sound he made — not quite a sound, the controlled exhalation of someone who had made a noise they did not intend to make.
“Sit down,” she said.
He sat on a flat section of stone that served as the closest thing to a seat in this part of the tunnel. She sat across from him and opened the kit she carried — small, canvas-wrapped, the contents selected for the specific hazards of the work she had been doing for the past months.
He pushed back his sleeve without being asked. The cut was on the outer forearm, approximately four centimeters, edges clean. She cleaned it with the solution in the small bottle, and he held his arm steady without being asked to, in the way of someone who had done this before and knew what was needed.
She threaded the needle.
The tunnel was quiet around them. The lamp Alden had set on the stone projection threw a steady, contained light. Outside this pool of light, the tunnel was dark in the complete, mineral way of underground spaces — a darkness that was not frightening now the way it had been the first time she had come down here, but was simply a condition, like cold or silence.
“Hold still,” she said, though he already was.
She worked carefully, the way she worked at everything — not quickly, but accurately. He looked up at the tunnel ceiling while she worked. She did not look at his face. She kept her attention on what she was doing.
After the second suture, he said: “Do you remember the honey bread.”
It was not quite a question. The way he said it was the way he said things he had been thinking about for a while and had decided to say — not spontaneous, deliberate, but offered without ceremony.
“The time Cassian took it from the High Ring cart,” she said. She kept her hands moving.
“He took the biggest piece first.”
“He always took the biggest piece first.”
“And then I gave you the part with the most honey.”
She placed the third suture. “I know,” she said.
He was quiet for a moment. She felt him recalibrate — a small shift in the quality of his stillness, the way he held his arm. “You knew?”
“I noticed at the time.” She tied off and cut. “I pretended not to. If I had acknowledged it, Cassian would have made a production of it for weeks and I didn't want to deal with that.”
The tunnel was quiet again.
“I thought you hadn't noticed,” he said.
“I notice things.” She set down the needle and began the bandaging. “It's what I do. I notice and I write them down or I keep them. I kept that one.”
She wrapped the bandage without looking up. He let her.
“Why?” he said.
She considered this. It was a genuine question and it deserved a genuine answer, which was the harder kind to give. “Because it was done quietly,” she said. “Without announcement. You didn't want anything back for it. It was just —” she looked up briefly before looking back down at the bandage “— you.”
The bandage was done. She should move. She did not move immediately.
“Hồi nhỏ tôi nghĩ cô không để ý,” he said, very quietly. *When we were young I thought you didn't notice.*
She looked at him then — fully, the way she rarely did, without the deflection of looking at her hands or at the space beside his shoulder. “Tôi luôn để ý,” she said. *I always noticed.* “Tôi chỉ không biết phải làm gì với nó.” *I just didn't know what to do with it.*
The silence that followed was the kind of silence that was not empty.
She became aware, in that silence, that she had said something true and that the truth of it was sitting in the space between them, visible to both of them, and that she did not entirely know what to do with that either.
She stood up and began packing the kit.
“We should move,” she said. “The patrol timing will have shifted by now.”
“Yes,” he said.
He stood. He picked up the lamp. He moved toward the tunnel's continuation without looking at her, which she was grateful for, because it gave her the space to put her expression back in order before they were side by side again.
They moved through the remaining section of tunnel in silence, and the silence was a different quality of silence than the one before, and she carried it with her all the way back to the surface.
