Seven days.
She had drawn the line through the date that morning and looked at the calendar and thought: seven days, and the Church agents were at the inn two streets over, and the description circulating now included the shoulder scar, and the documentation was coming in ten days, and all of these things were true simultaneously and required management simultaneously, and she was, objectively, in a more complicated situation than she had been a month ago.
She was also, she noted with the specific honesty she tried to bring to self-assessment, less frightened than she had been a month ago.
She examined this. The external situation had objectively worsened. The threat level had increased. The timeline had compressed. By any rational measure, the fear response should have scaled accordingly.
Instead she had read *Then I am staying* — four words, in the careful handwriting she had learned to recognize — and had felt something settle in her chest that had been unsettled for a long time.
She was still examining this when she realized it was a trăng tròn night.
The realization arrived not with dread but with something she had to look at carefully before she could name it. She had been dreading the trăng tròn for the first several weeks — dreading the cost of it on him, the specific vulnerability of the transformation, the fact that she could hear the pain of it and could do nothing. Last night she had sat on the floor of the shop and exchanged papers in the dark and listened to him stand next to her chair and gone to sleep knowing he was there, and the dread had somewhere in the intervening days become something else.
She did not examine the something else too closely.
At nine she made tea.
Two cups. She set one on the reading table as she always did, and then she stood in the middle of the shop and thought about the chair and decided against it.
She sat on the floor instead — the same position as last night, back against the far bookshelf, knees pulled up, her cup in her hands. The lamp on the reading table was burning low. The fire was banked. Outside, the fog was coming down from the hills in the particular way it came down on cold clear nights, heavy and slow.
She waited.
The transformation, when it came, was something she had heard before — but last night she had heard it without the additional layer of performed sleep to process it through, and she heard it the same way tonight. The specific sounds of it. The cost of it. She sat with her cup and breathed carefully and did not look, because not looking was still the right choice, and she kept her attention on the tea and the fire and the sounds of Oakhaven outside.
When the silence settled back into the room, it was a different silence — fuller, the silence of a different number of people.
Footsteps. To the reading table. The chair. The cup lifted.
Neither of them spoke.
This was, she had come to understand, one of the things that was specific to them — the particular comfort of shared silence, the way they had developed, without discussing it, a practice of being in the same space without filling it. She had tried, early in her time in Oakhaven, to explain to herself why she found silence with some people comfortable and with others not, and had arrived at the conclusion that it had something to do with whether the silence required maintenance. Comfortable silences did not require work. They simply were.
This silence was not work.
She was finishing her tea when the paper arrived — slid across the floor, as it had arrived the night before, traveling the distance between them in the dark.
She went to the door lamp to read it.
*You don't have to stay on the floor. There's a chair.*
She stood at the lamp and read it and felt the specific response that she had been feeling with increasing frequency — the upward movement in her chest, the loosening, the thing that was not quite laughter but was in the same family.
She went to the reading table and took a fresh sheet and wrote: *That's my chair.*
She pushed it back across the floor toward the table.
A pause. Then another sheet came back: *I am aware of whose chair it is.*
She read this and did laugh, quietly, in the way she had taken to laughing in the dark — contained, private, directed mostly at the floor or at her own hands. She wrote: *Then you understand why you can't sit in it.*
Another pause. Another sheet: *Your logic requires me to accept a premise I am not certain I accept.*
She stood at the door lamp and read this and thought: he is arguing with me about chair ownership at three in the morning and I cannot identify a single thing about this that is not entirely right.
She wrote: *What premise?*
The response took longer than the previous ones. She sat on the floor and waited and heard the sounds of him at the reading table — the pen, a pause, the pen again — and when the paper arrived it said: *The premise that ownership of a chair and the right to sit in it are necessarily the same thing. I would argue that your ownership of the chair does not preclude my use of it, particularly in circumstances where you are not using it yourself.*
She stared at this.
She wrote: *That is an extremely sophisticated argument for chair access.*
Almost immediately: *I have had a great deal of time to think about it.*
She laughed again, less quietly this time, and pressed her hand over her mouth and looked at the ceiling and thought: I am sitting on the floor of my bookshop at three in the morning arguing about chairs with a cursed prince who is currently a man and will be a wolf by dawn, and this is the best conversation I have had in years.
They continued.
She was not sure, afterward, how long they continued — she had lost track of time in the way she lost track of time when she was genuinely absorbed in something, which was not a common occurrence. They moved from the chair argument to the book he had been reading — a history of the southern trade routes that he had opinions about, specifically regarding the historian's treatment of a particular political negotiation that he indicated, without indicating how he knew, was factually wrong in several significant respects. She told him about the system she used for organizing the section where that book had come from, which had led to a discussion of the single shelf she organized by color rather than subject, which he had noticed and which he described, in one of the papers, as *aesthetically coherent but practically bewildering, which I mean as neither criticism nor praise but simply as an accurate description.*
She wrote: *It's for the customers who don't know what they want but know what they're drawn to.*
A pause. Then: *That is a better explanation than I expected and I want you to know I am revising my position.*
She sat on the floor with that paper and felt warmth moving through her that had nothing to do with the fire.
When the last paper came it was past four, and the quality of the dark outside had begun its slow migration toward something that was not yet light but was less thoroughly dark. She heard the change in his movements — the specific quality of attention that preceded the transformation, the way he gathered himself.
*Go to sleep. I'll be here.*
She read the paper in the fading lamplight.
She looked across the room toward the reading table, toward the shape of him that she had been not-looking-at all night with the specific precision of someone who is very aware of where something is without allowing themselves to look directly at it.
Then she lay down.
Not in the chair. On the floor, where she had been sitting, with the paper in her hand and the bookshelf at her back and the low fire in the grate and the fog outside and seven days on the calendar and four words on a piece of paper that she had read so many times she had them memorized.
She closed her eyes.
She felt, rather than heard, the moment the transformation came — the change in the quality of the room, the specific shift of a presence becoming a different kind of presence. And then warmth, near her, the warmth of something alive settling close.
She did not open her eyes.
She held the paper.
She slept.
