She was still asleep when the transformation reversed.
This was the first time he had watched her sleep from this proximity — close enough that he could see the specific way her face changed in sleep, the particular release of the composition she maintained while awake. She was lying on the floor with her back against the bookshelf, one hand still holding the paper he had slid across to her in the last hour before dawn, her hair loose around her face, her breathing slow and even in the way it was when she was genuinely and thoroughly asleep.
The paper in her hand said *Go to sleep. I'll be here.*
She had kept it.
He lay where he had settled after the transformation — close, but not so close that she would wake and find herself without choice about the proximity. He had made a decision in the wolf-settling, choosing the distance that was near enough to be present and far enough to be respectful, and now he was lying on the floor of the bookshop watching the woman who had sat up all night arguing with him about chairs sleep with his words in her hand.
He did not know, examining it with the honest attention he had been applying to things he did not know how to categorize, what to do with what he was feeling.
He did know that he had never felt it before. He was certain of this with the specific certainty of someone who had a thorough internal inventory and could confirm an absence. He had felt, in his life, many things — the clean focus of combat, the satisfaction of a well-executed plan, the specific cold of betrayal, the duller cold of long loneliness that had eventually stopped feeling like cold because cold required a reference point of warmth to define itself against.
He had not felt this.
He did not try to name it. He lay on the floor and watched her sleep and let it be what it was, unnamed, and found that unnamed was acceptable. That not every thing required a word.
She woke at six-twenty.
He watched her come back to consciousness — the small movements of orientation, the assessment, the moment she registered that she was on the floor and recalled why. She looked at her hand first — still holding the paper — and then at the room, and then at him.
He held her gaze.
She sat up slowly, the way people moved when they were not entirely awake but were choosing to be careful rather than quick. She looked at the paper in her hand for a moment, then folded it with the specific care she gave to things she was keeping, and put it in the pocket of her cardigan.
Not the drawer of the reading table, where she kept the other papers. Her pocket.
He noted this.
She stood, stretched briefly, and went to make tea. He listened to the sounds of the morning routine — the kettle, the cups, the specific sequence of her movement through the small kitchen space — and found that he was paying attention to the sounds with a different quality than he usually paid attention to things. Not assessment. Something closer to the way you listened to music: not for information, but because the listening itself was the point.
Two cups.
She brought his out and set it in front of him and went back to the chair with hers. He drank his tea and looked at the morning light coming through the frost-edged window and thought about the conversation from the night before — the chair argument, the trade route history, the color-organized shelf, the specific quality of three hours of talking about nothing in particular with someone who was paying genuine attention.
Maren came at ten.
She let herself in with the key and came through the door with the specific energy of someone who had noticed something from across the street and had opinions about it. She looked at Evelyn. She looked at Lulu. She looked at the floor near the bookshelf, where the impression of a person having sat for a long time was faintly visible in the rug.
"You look different today," Maren said.
Evelyn was behind the counter, sorting through the morning's post. "I slept well."
Maren looked at the rug impression. She looked at Lulu. She looked at Evelyn again.
She was nineteen and she ran a fabric shop and she was, Fenrir had come to understand, considerably more observant than most people gave her credit for.
She said nothing else about it. She bought a small book of local botanical illustrations that she said was for her mother and spent twenty minutes telling Evelyn about the latest development in the miller's daughter and baker's boy situation, which had apparently reached a new stage, and left with the comfortable ease of someone who had come for information and had also gotten it, though not the information she had come for.
After she left, Evelyn looked at him.
"She noticed," Evelyn said.
He held her gaze.
"She's not going to say anything," Evelyn said. "She's good at that."
He believed this. He had been observing Maren for weeks and had arrived at the same conclusion.
The letter from Tomas arrived in the afternoon post.
Evelyn read it at the counter and her expression did the thing it did when she was recalibrating — a brief stillness, an internal adjustment, and then the return to her working face. She crossed to where he was lying and crouched down.
"Five days," she said. "Tomas finished early. The documentation is ready in five days."
Five days.
He sat up.
Five days was different from ten days. Ten days had felt like a horizon — close but still theoretical, still in the space of planning rather than action. Five days was immediate. Five days was the day after tomorrow's day after tomorrow, which was a span he could feel rather than merely calculate.
He looked at her.
She was watching him with the expression she wore when she was waiting for him to process something before she said the next thing — the specific quality of patience that she had for him that she did not, he had noticed, have for everyone. She gave him room. She always gave him room.
He wrote, on the paper beside him: *Five days. When we have the papers — what's the plan?*
She read it. She was quiet for a moment — longer than her usual pauses, the kind of quiet that meant she was not delaying but genuinely sitting with something.
Then she wrote: *That depends on what you want the papers to be for.*
He read it.
He set the paper down.
He had known this question was coming. He had known it in the way you knew things that were inevitable — not specific foreknowledge, but the recognition, when something arrived, that it had been on its way for a while. He had been thinking about it in the background of everything else, running it in parallel with the threat assessments and the documentation timeline and the trăng tròn count, and he had not resolved it because resolving it required him to say something true about what he wanted, and what he wanted had become, over the past several weeks, considerably more complicated than what he had wanted when he arrived.
He spent the afternoon with the question.
He thought about the Hoàng huynh. The throne. The empire's machinery turning without him in it, producing outcomes he had been trained to care about. He thought about the specific drive that had kept him moving, before — the momentum of purpose, the forward motion of someone who had a destination even when the destination was terrible.
He thought about the bookshop. The specific weight of the silence at this hour. The way the morning light came through the frost-edged window. The sound of Evelyn moving through the kitchen. The papers in the drawer of the reading table, kept in order, accumulating.
He thought about *get out of Oakhaven* and about *leave* and about the distinction between them that had arrived in his mind some days ago and had not left.
He wrote, in the evening, in his nighttime handwriting — he did not wait for the transformation: *I don't know yet. But I know that 'get out of Oakhaven' and 'leave' are not the same thing in my mind anymore, and I think you should know that before we decide anything.*
He set the paper on the reading table.
He lay down in front of the door.
He heard her find it, later, after she had come back from the kitchen with two cups of tea — he heard her stop at the reading table, heard the specific quality of her stillness as she read. A long pause. Then her footsteps to the chair.
No response that night.
But in the morning, when he woke in wolf form, there were two cups of tea — one in front of the door, one on the reading table — and the smell from the kitchen was the specific smell of the rice with good broth, the rice she made when she was being deliberate about something, the rice she had made the morning after he had written the uncrossed fourth thing.
He lay in front of the door and breathed in the smell of it.
He understood that this was her answer.
He did not need more than this, not yet — the smell of deliberate rice and two cups of tea and five days on a calendar and a paper in a pocket that said *I'll be here.*
It was enough.
It was, he was finding, consistently enough — the specific sufficiency of things that were real rather than things that were promised, the way actual warmth was different from the idea of warmth, the way presence was different from the absence of absence.
He got up and went to his cup.
He drank his tea.
The morning began.
