Four words.
She had been carrying them since morning — not consciously, not with the specific weight of something she was analyzing, but in the way you carried things that had settled into you without asking permission. *Then I am staying.* Four words in careful handwriting on a piece of paper that she had read, set down, and then picked back up and read again, and then put in the drawer of the reading table with the others, and had been thinking about, in the background of everything else, for the entire day.
She was aware that the four words required a response. Not an immediate one — he had not asked for an immediate one, had offered them without apparent expectation of return, in the same way he offered most things: set down on the table and left there, available but not demanding. She had been responding to things in her own time, and he had been receiving her responses in his own time, and they had built, in this way, something that worked.
But four words like those required eventually an honest answer, and she had not yet been able to reach the honest answer without also reaching the thing underneath it, which was the wound — the specific fear that had organized her life for two years and which was, she could feel, no longer quite the same shape it had been.
She was thinking about this at the counter, sorting through the morning mail, when Maren came in.
Maren's face said there was news before Maren said anything.
"The two men from the Church," Maren said, with the careful delivery of someone who had practiced how to say something on the way over. "They're still at the inn. But last night Perrin saw them meeting with someone — not from here. Perrin didn't recognize him. He came in from the eastern road after dark."
A third person.
Evelyn processed this with the focused efficiency of someone who had been managing threat assessments for long enough that the first response was always information-gathering rather than reaction. "What did he look like?"
Maren described him — middle-aged, well-dressed, the kind of well-dressed that said money rather than title, traveling alone, spoke to the Church men for approximately twenty minutes in the inn's back room and then left the way he had come.
A coordinator, Fenrir would say. Someone connecting the hired inquirers to the institutional agents. Which meant the two operations — the Church's formal inquiry and the private search — were no longer running independently.
They were converging.
After Maren left, Evelyn closed the shop.
She did not pace. Pacing was not useful. She stood at the counter and ran through the revised situation with the part of her mind she had trained for exactly this — the part that had been building contingencies and managing risk assessments for two years, the part that was good at the specific arithmetic of danger.
The arithmetic now: five days to documentation. Unknown number of days before the converging search produced actionable intelligence about Oakhaven. The Church agents at the inn had been here for three days already. Each day they stayed increased the probability that someone would say something, connect something, notice something.
She needed to revise the plan.
She got it from the drawer and spread it on the counter and looked at it — the routes, the timing, the contingencies she had built and revised over the past several weeks, the word two that she had written and not erased.
Lulu came and stood beside her.
Not behind her, not at a distance — beside her, close enough that she could feel the warmth of him against her leg, and he looked at the paper on the counter with the focused attention she had learned to recognize as his working attention, the attention he brought to things that required analysis.
She looked at him.
He looked at the paper.
She said, for the first time out loud, in actual spoken words rather than written ones: "Route A goes north through the hill road. It's longer but avoids the main checkpoint. Route B goes east to the river crossing, which is faster but means passing through Millhaven, and Millhaven has had a Church presence since last season."
She heard herself speaking and noted the specific quality of it — the way saying things aloud to him was different from writing them, more immediate, more present, requiring a different kind of attention from both of them.
He was listening. She could feel him listening the way you felt certain kinds of attention — in the specific quality of the stillness, the direction of it.
She kept going.
"Route A is my preference for multiple reasons, but it has one vulnerability, which is the old mill at the top of the hill road. There's a family there that has historically had Church sympathies, and if the agents have been thorough about their inquiry network, the mill family may have been contacted."
She stopped.
Lulu moved.
He moved to the far side of the counter, to the map she kept on the wall behind it — a regional map, the kind sold in tourist shops, that she had acquired in the first month and which showed, among other things, the road network in the area around Oakhaven. He looked at it. Then he raised one paw and touched a point on the map — not the hill road, not the river crossing, but a third route she had not considered, running southwest through the old mining territory, which had been largely depopulated since the mines had played out forty years ago and which appeared on the map as a series of dotted lines indicating unpaved roads.
She looked at where he was pointing.
She looked at him.
She went to the map and examined the route he had indicated — the timing of it, the terrain, the specific advantages of depopulated territory for two people who did not want to be noticed. It was longer than either of the routes she had considered. It was also, she could see, significantly less observable.
"Route C," she said.
He lowered his paw.
She took the contingency plan and began to revise it, working at the counter with him standing beside her, and when she had questions — about terrain, about the specific points where the route would be most exposed — she asked them and watched him indicate answers on the map, and they worked through it together in the specific collaborative efficiency of two people who had, without planning it, learned to think in complementary ways.
When she was done the plan was different. Better. The word two was still there, in the same slightly heavier pencil as before, and now there was also a route and a timing that had been built by both of them together rather than by one of them alone.
She looked at the revised plan.
She looked at Lulu.
"When the documentation arrives," she said, and then stopped, because she wanted to say this right, and saying it right required a moment.
She said: "Whatever we decide to do with it — wherever we go, or if we stay — I want you to know that I'm not going to make that decision alone. We decide together."
He looked at her.
She held his gaze and let the words be what they were — not qualified, not walked back, not framed in the careful not-quite-saying that she had been practicing for most of her adult life. We. Together. She had said them, and she was not taking them back.
"Together," she said again, simply, because it bore repeating.
He blinked — the slow deliberate blink she had learned to read as acknowledgment, as the closest available equivalent to a nod — and then he looked away, toward the window, toward the street, giving her the room he always gave her after she said something significant.
She stood at the counter with the revised plan and felt the specific quality of having said a true thing to someone who received it, which was a quality she had been in the process of rediscovering for several weeks and which still, each time, arrived with a small measure of surprise.
In the evening, she sat at the reading table and wrote.
Not the quick exchanges of the past few days — she wrote slowly, with the deliberateness she brought to the things that mattered. She had been carrying the question of what she wanted the documentation to be for since she had asked it, and she had been carrying *Then I am staying* since that morning, and she had been carrying *we decide together* since she had said it out loud an hour ago, and all of these things were pulling in the same direction and she was, finally, ready to follow.
She wrote: *I want the papers to be for someone who is choosing to stay — not because they have nowhere else to go, but because this is where they want to be. And I want that to be a choice, not a circumstance. The difference matters to me. I think you understand why.*
She read it back.
She thought about the wound — the specific fear that had organized her life, the dread of being wanted for what she could provide rather than for who she was. She thought about the fact that he had stayed when he could have left, had been capable of leaving for days before he acknowledged it even to himself, had chosen to stay without making it a transaction, without asking for anything in return.
She thought about the four words.
She had not added anything to what she had written, but she added one line now, below the first: *I think you've already answered this. I needed to say it anyway.*
She folded the paper and set it on the table.
She went to the chair.
She lay in the chair and looked at the ceiling and thought about five days and about Route C and about *we decide together* and about the specific shape of the thing she was inside, which she had been trying not to look at directly for several weeks because looking at it directly would require her to name it, and naming it would require her to acknowledge that it was real, and acknowledging that it was real would mean that all of the walls she had built with such care were not, in fact, still intact.
They were not still intact.
She had known this for some time.
In the morning, she found his response before she made tea — she went to the table first, before the kitchen, before the opening routine, before anything. The paper was there, in his careful nighttime handwriting.
Four words.
*Then I am staying.*
And below them, added in the same hand: *Not because I have nowhere else to go. Because this is where I want to be. I understand the difference. I want you to know that I do.*
She stood at the reading table in the early morning light and read it, and read it again, and felt the thing in her chest that had been held tight for a long time finally, fully, let go.
She stood there for a while.
Then she went to the kitchen and made rice — the good rice, with the good broth, the recipe from her world that she made when she was being deliberate — and she made two portions, and she brought his out first, and she set it down in front of him, and she looked at him directly, which she did not always do, and she said:
"Good morning."
He looked at her with those mismatched eyes — ice blue and deep amber — and the quality of the look was different from every look before it, had a different weight, a different openness, the specific quality of someone who has stopped holding something back.
She went back to the kitchen to get her own bowl.
She was smiling.
She had not decided to smile. It had simply happened, in the way that things happened when you stopped defending against them.
Five days.
She thought: five days, and a route through the mining territory, and documentation for two people, and a plan that had been built by both of them together, and a morning that tasted like something she had not let herself taste in a very long time.
She sat down on the floor beside him with her bowl and her tea and the morning light coming through the frost-edged window, and she did not think about what came next, and she did not calculate, and she did not plan.
She just sat there.
It was, she found, entirely sufficient.
