They left at dawn.
The fog was still low when they stepped out of The Folded Page for the last time — Evelyn with her bag over one shoulder and the specific quality of someone who had made a decision and was not second-guessing it, Fenrir beside her in wolf form, which was the cover they had agreed on: a woman and her dog, traveling the mining road, nothing remarkable about either of them.
She did not look back at the shop.
He watched her not look back, and understood what it cost her, and said nothing because there was nothing to say that was not already understood.
Oakhaven was quiet at this hour. The fog muffled the early sounds of the town waking up — a cart somewhere to the north, the distant bell of the baker's opening, the specific Oakhaven morning quality that he had spent six weeks learning and would carry with him the way you carried the specific quality of places that had mattered. They moved through the streets without drawing attention, which was a thing they were both, for different reasons, practiced at.
At the edge of town, where the road forked, Evelyn paused.
She looked at the western fork — the road that led to the hill country and eventually to the northern territories, the direction that had shaped most of the past months of both their lives. Then she looked at the southwestern track, faint and frost-edged, that was Route C.
She took the southwestern track.
He walked beside her.
The first two hours were silent in the way that early morning travel was silent — not the silence of people who had nothing to say but the silence of people who were present in their surroundings rather than using conversation to avoid them. The mining road ran through country that had been worked out and returned to something approximating wildness: scrubby trees, the occasional ruin of a processing shed, the geometric shapes of old excavations filling slowly with snowmelt and time.
He monitored the environment with the attention of someone for whom this was habitual — the tree line, the road behind them, the places where someone could observe without being observed. He found nothing in the first two hours. He did not relax his attention, because the absence of threat was not the same as the absence of threat, but he noted the absence and continued.
He also monitored her.
This was not a separate activity from monitoring the environment — he had discovered, over the past several weeks, that the two had become integrated in a way that was not entirely tactical. She walked with a steady pace, well-calibrated to sustainable distance rather than speed, the gait of someone who had thought about how long they had to travel and had set a pace accordingly. She was carrying the bag without visible difficulty. She was looking at the landscape with the specific quality of attention she gave things she was seeing for the first time and deciding what to make of.
At midday they stopped by a stream.
The stream was small and clear and moving fast under the remnants of ice at its edges, the particular swift clarity of water in high country. Evelyn sat down on a rock at the edge of it and took the bag off her shoulder and opened it, and took out the bread and the cheese she had packed — she had packed enough for two people, automatically, the way she did everything now — and held out his portion.
He sat beside her and took it from her hand.
They ate by the stream in the winter midday light, which was thin and pale and came at a low angle through the trees, and the water moved past them with its small continuous sound, and neither of them said anything for a while, and it was, he thought, entirely sufficient. The specific ordinary sufficiency of a meal shared in a specific place at a specific time with a specific person — not remarkable, not requiring remark, simply what it was.
Evelyn said, looking at the stream: "I never asked you where you want to go. After we get the documentation. After — whatever happens next." A pause. "I've been making plans for two people and assuming you'd tell me if I was planning wrong. But I haven't actually asked."
He looked at the stream.
The question sat in him differently than most questions. He had been asked, in his life, many questions about where he was going — always in the context of campaigns, objectives, tactical movements, the geography of purpose. This question had no tactical context. It was simply: where do you want to go. As if wanting and going were the same thing, as if the destination were his to name.
He had not, until six weeks ago, had the experience of wanting and being permitted to name it in the same moment.
He sat with the question for long enough that Evelyn glanced at him — not with impatience, just checking, the way she checked on things that mattered.
"I don't know yet," he said. His voice, in the open air, had a different quality than it had had in the enclosed space of the bookshop — slightly more exposed, the way all things were more exposed in the open. "I have not had occasion to answer that question without a military context for a long time."
She nodded, looking back at the stream.
"I find I need more information than I currently have," he said. "About what the options look like. About what — " He paused. "About what a life looks like when it is chosen rather than assigned."
She was quiet for a moment.
"That sounds like something I've been working on for a while," she said. "I could compare notes."
"I would like that," he said.
They finished eating and moved on.
The afternoon brought the mining territory proper — the landscape changed from scrubby regrowth to the starker geography of worked earth, the strange beauty of industrial ruin in the process of being reclaimed. He had seen places like this before, after campaigns, the landscape of former purpose emptied of its purpose. He had always found them melancholy before. He found this one differently — not melancholy but something more neutral, the way he was finding many things lately that he had previously found one way and now found another.
He heard them before he saw any sign.
Two sets of footsteps, behind and to the left, moving at a pace that was too consistent with their own to be coincidental. Not gaining — maintaining distance, which was the pattern of someone tracking rather than pursuing, someone building information rather than acting on it. Hired, he thought, not Church. Church agents closed faster.
He moved closer to Evelyn — a small adjustment, enough that his shoulder was against her leg.
She noticed immediately. He felt her pace change by a fraction — not slowing, not speeding, just recalibrating — and then she said, quietly, without turning: "Behind us?"
"Left," he said. "Two."
A pause. "How far?"
"Fifty meters. Tracking, not pursuing."
Another pause. "What do we do?"
"We don't run," he said. "Running confirms we know they're there. We continue at the same pace and we find shelter before dark."
She nodded — once, small, the nod of someone who had received instruction and was acting on it without requiring it to be justified. The specific trust of it arrived in him with the same weight it always arrived with, the weight of something he had not known was available and was still learning to carry.
They continued.
The light was going when he found the structure — a mine processing shed, three walls still standing, the fourth partially collapsed but enough roof remaining to provide cover. He indicated it with a shift in direction, and Evelyn followed without hesitation, and they were inside and settled in the shelter of the standing walls before the last light fully faded.
He went to the gap in the collapsed wall and looked out.
The footsteps had stopped some time ago — he had noted the absence and had been tracking the silence since. They had either lost the trail or chosen not to follow into the structure, which amounted to the same thing for tonight.
He returned to where Evelyn was sitting, her back against the most solid of the remaining walls, her bag beside her, looking at the last of the light in the gap where the roof met the sky.
"We're clear for now," he said.
She let out a slow breath. Not relief exactly — release, the specific quality of tension that had been managed rather than felt, finally being allowed to resolve.
"We stay here tonight," he said. "Move at first light."
She nodded. Then she looked at him — directly, the way she had been looking at him since the conversation in the bookshop, without the intermediary of the wolf-as-fiction — and said: "You're not going to be able to transform tonight. Trăng is still three days away."
"No," he said.
She held his gaze for a moment.
"Okay," she said.
Just that. Not a question, not a reassurance, not a qualification. She had asked a factual question, received a factual answer, and said okay, which contained in two syllables everything that two syllables could contain: I know, I'm not worried, this is simply what is, and I am here regardless.
She settled against the wall, pulled her coat tighter, and closed her eyes.
He lay down across the gap in the collapsed wall — between her and the opening, between her and whatever was outside — and looked at the dark sky through the gap in the roof where a few stars were visible through the breaking cloud.
He thought about the road they had traveled today, and the road ahead, and the specific quality of traveling with someone who asked where you wanted to go as if wanting and going were the same thing.
He thought: I have been moving for twenty-eight years toward things I was assigned to want.
He thought: I am going to need some time to learn what wanting feels like from the inside.
He thought: I have, for the first time, time.
Outside, the night settled over the mining territory. The stream they had stopped at was somewhere to the north, still moving. The footsteps that had followed them were silent.
Beside him, Evelyn's breathing had slowed into sleep.
He stayed awake and watched the gap in the roof and the stars moving slowly through it, and thought about chosen lives and assigned lives and the specific shape of the space between them, and did not sleep until he was certain she was safe.
Then he slept too.
The stars moved on without them.
