She woke to the sound of him breathing.
This was not new — she had been waking to the sound of him breathing for six weeks, in the shop, in the chair, on the floor on the nights she had stopped pretending. But it was different here, in the abandoned farmhouse with its cold stone floor and the thin morning light coming through the gap where the door no longer quite fit its frame. Different because there was no shop around them, no familiar arrangement of shelves and lamplight and the specific accumulated atmosphere of a place that had been lived in for years. There was just the floor and the cold and the gray light and him, lying across the threshold the way he always lay across thresholds, and the sound of his breathing.
She sat up and looked at him.
He was awake — she could tell from the quality of his stillness, which was different from his sleeping stillness, more directed, the stillness of someone maintaining awareness rather than resting. He had been awake for a while. The shadows under his eyes, which she had not seen before because she had not had occasion to look at him in morning light in an unfamiliar place, told her he had not slept much.
He had been awake all night.
She looked at him and felt something move through her that was not quite guilt — she had not asked him to stay awake, he had made that choice — but was in the vicinity of guilt, the specific feeling of someone who has benefited from a cost they did not pay.
"You didn't sleep," she said.
He turned his head toward her.
"You should have woken me," she said. "I could have taken a shift."
He regarded her with the expression she had learned to read as the expression he wore when he was considering whether to say something he had already decided not to say.
"Don't," she said.
He blinked.
"Whatever you were about to not say — don't not say it. We talked about this."
A pause. Then: "I did not think you needed to keep watch. There was nothing to see."
"That's not the point," she said. She was pulling on her coat, moving with the efficiency of someone who had been camping rough for several days and had stopped mourning the absence of comfort. "The point is that you carrying everything alone is not — that's not what we said we were doing."
He was quiet.
"I know it's a habit," she said, more quietly. "I know. But habits can be worked on."
They moved out at first light, which was the color of old pewter and arrived with a cold that had teeth. The mining territory looked different by day than it had by the dim lamp-light of the previous evening — larger, emptier, the specific grandeur of land that had been worked over and was now in the slow process of forgetting it. She walked at her pace and he walked beside her and the morning was quiet in the way that mornings in unpopulated places were quiet, full of sounds that were not human.
She was paying attention to everything: the road surface, the tree line, the way the light moved across the terrain. She had been paying attention to environments since she arrived in this world, because attention was what kept you alive when you didn't have other resources, but she was aware that her attention had a different quality now — less the attention of someone managing risk alone and more the attention of someone who was present in a place rather than simply moving through it.
At midday the quality of his movement changed.
She noticed it before she could have said what she noticed — a slight increase in the precision of his footsteps, the way his head came up to scan the ridge above the road. She had been watching him long enough to know what his baseline looked like, and this was not baseline.
She kept walking. She kept her pace and her expression and the external presentation of someone moving along a road with nothing particular on her mind.
The Church agents came over the ridge above them three minutes later.
She knew what they were before they were close enough to see clearly — the bearing, the pace, the specific way they moved across terrain. Two of them, heading in a direction that would take them across the road they were on at a point approximately thirty meters ahead.
Fenrir was already moving — not away, but sideways, a slight pressure against her leg directing her toward the large outcrop of rock at the road's edge. She followed the direction without requiring explanation, the way she had learned to follow his threat assessments, and in thirty seconds they were behind the rock and the road above them was empty.
The footsteps of the Church agents passed on the ridge. She could hear them clearly in the silence of the mining territory — the regular tread of people who were covering ground rather than tracking. They were not looking down at the road. They did not stop.
They waited.
Fenrir was very close — the space behind the outcrop was not large, and they were both pressed against the cold face of it. She could feel him against her side in the way she had learned to feel his presence, the specific warmth of it, and she was aware that this was different from the tiệm sách proximity, that this was a different kind of closeness — exposed, without the familiar architecture around it, the two of them simply themselves in an unfamiliar place with a real danger moving past on the ridge above.
She breathed carefully and listened to the footsteps fade.
When the silence had lasted long enough, he moved first — a small shift, checking the ridge, and then settling again.
"Gone," he said.
She exhaled.
They moved out from behind the rock and continued on the road.
She was still processing the specific quality of those thirty seconds — the proximity, the silence, the way her body had responded to the combination of danger and closeness in a way she had not entirely been prepared for — when she became aware that the light was going. Significantly. More quickly than she had calculated.
She checked her reckoning against the terrain and the shadows and arrived at the conclusion she had been avoiding: the day's route had taken longer than planned, partly because of the detour, partly because the terrain was rougher than the map had suggested, and they were not going to reach the next shelter point before dark.
She said nothing.
She continued walking and considered the options and noted, in some portion of her awareness that was tracking things other than route logistics, that she had not told him. That she had the information and was processing it and had not, automatically, shared it.
She thought about the morning's conversation.
"I've miscalculated the timing," she said. "We're not going to reach the next point before dark."
He looked at her. Not surprised — she could tell from the specific quality of his not-surprise that he had already known.
"You knew," she said.
A pause. "Since the midday stop."
She stopped walking.
He stopped beside her.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
His answer came after a moment that she recognized as the pause of someone being honest about something they had not examined before they were asked to explain it: "I did not want you to be concerned."
She looked at him.
"That's not how we do this," she said. Not with anger — with the specific directness she had learned to use for things that mattered and needed to be said clearly. "I need to know what you know. We can't make good decisions together if one of us is managing the other's response to information."
He held her gaze.
"It is a habit," he said, which was not a defense.
"I know it is," she said. "I have habits too. Mine is not telling people things because I'm afraid of what they'll do with them." She paused. "We're both working on things."
He was quiet for a moment.
"You're right," he said. Simply, without qualification. "I'm sorry."
She looked at him and felt the specific quality of a thing being received and acknowledged, which was, she was finding, one of the most disarming things a person could do.
"Thank you," she said.
They found shelter as the last light faded — an abandoned farmhouse, better than the mine shed of the night before, with three intact walls and enough of a roof to be genuinely useful. She made a small fire and they ate what they had and the night settled around them with the particular quality of nights in open country, larger and more present than city nights.
She thought about the day. The agents on the ridge. The thirty seconds behind the rock. The conversation about information and habits and the specific courage of saying *we're both working on things* to someone you did not yet know if you trusted fully.
She did trust him fully. She had known that for some time.
She just needed to keep acting like it.
Fenrir lay down beside her when the fire had burned low enough, close in the way that had become natural over the past weeks, and she looked at the ceiling of the farmhouse where the stars were visible through a gap in the roof, cold and very far away.
"Thank you," she said, quietly, into the dark. "For being here."
Not for protecting her. Not for the specific actions of the day. For being here — present, chosen, the thing that was not a function or a role but simply a person who had decided to be in the same place she was.
He was quiet for a moment.
Then: "There is nowhere else I would be."
She held that.
She looked at the stars through the gap in the roof.
She slept.
