Millhaven was different from Oakhaven in the specific way that places were different when they had decided what side they were on.
Oakhaven's neutrality had been built into its architecture — the way the buildings faced outward, the particular arrangement of the market square that seemed designed for the accommodation of strangers, the fog that rolled in every evening and gave the town a quality of impermanence, of existing slightly outside ordinary categories. Oakhaven had not been on any side. It had simply been.
Millhaven had made a choice.
Fenrir read it in the first two minutes of walking through the outskirts: the Church insignia on the inn's sign, the way the crest appeared in small repetitions on doorways and windows and the corner of the market notice board, the specific uprightness of the people they passed that came not from natural bearing but from habit — the habit of living somewhere that was watched and knowing it. Not oppression, exactly. Something more subtle than oppression. A pervasive awareness of observation that had become, over time, simply the texture of the place.
He adjusted his threat assessment accordingly.
Evelyn was walking slightly ahead of him, which was the arrangement they had settled on in towns — she was the person, he was the dog, and the person led and the dog followed and this was unremarkable. She had an ease in towns that he recognized as the ease of someone who had spent years learning to move through inhabited places without drawing attention, the specific grace of practiced invisibility.
He followed her through the streets to the small establishment where Tomas had agreed to meet them.
Tomas was already there.
He was older than Fenrir had expected from Evelyn's descriptions — or rather, he had expected the sharp-eyed efficiency she had described and had not accounted for the specific combination of age and shrewdness that produced a man who could look at a situation and immediately understand more of it than he had been told. Tomas looked at Evelyn, and then at Fenrir — at his eyes specifically, because that was what people looked at, the specific feature that could not be explained away — and then back at Evelyn.
"Heterochromia," he said. "As described."
"As described," Evelyn agreed.
Tomas reached into his coat and produced the documentation — two sets, bound separately, handed over with the economical efficiency of someone who had done this before and understood that the value of the service lay partly in how it was delivered. Evelyn took them and opened the one marked for her first, checked the key details with the quick eye of someone who knew what they were looking for, and then opened the second.
Fenrir watched her open it.
He had been present for the creation of F. Vale — had known about the letters going to Tomas, had understood the practical necessity of the documentation, had felt something complicated when she had told him what name she had used. But there was a difference between knowing a thing and seeing it: a packet of papers that said, in the formal language of official documentation, that a person named F. Vale existed and had a history and a province of origin and a legal standing in the world.
He had existed, before this, in the world's official record as the second prince of the Valerius Empire, which was a category defined entirely by its relationship to other things — to the emperor, to the succession, to the imperial apparatus. He had never had documentation that was simply his, that named him without the architecture of his family and his rank.
Evelyn passed him the packet.
He took it and looked at it and felt something he could not immediately name.
"Ten minutes," Tomas said, standing. "Then I have not seen you."
He left with the specific unhurriedness of a man who had learned that visible urgency was more conspicuous than visible calm.
Evelyn was watching the room.
So was Fenrir.
The man at the corner table had been looking at the wrong things since they came in — at Fenrir's face rather than at his meal, at the door after Tomas left rather than at the wall. The pattern of his gaze had the quality of someone who had seen something they recognized and were deciding what to do with the recognition.
Not Church. The calculation in the man's eyes was financial rather than institutional — the specific expression of someone doing arithmetic about a reward.
Fenrir shifted his weight infinitesimally.
Evelyn stood in a single fluid motion, tucking the documentation into her bag with the unhurried ease of someone who was simply done with her transaction and ready to leave. She moved toward the door without appearing to move away from anything, and he followed her, and they were on the street before the man at the corner table had completed his calculation.
"Now we move," Evelyn said, already turning into a side street he had not noticed.
He followed.
She led them through Millhaven with the specific knowledge of a person who had studied a place before entering it — not running, never running, moving at the pace of people who were going somewhere specific and knew where it was. She took three turns he would not have taken, each one moving them away from the main streets and toward the quieter edges of the town where the roads became less certain of their own existence.
At the eastern edge of Millhaven, where the last buildings gave way to the road that ran toward open country, she stopped.
She turned and checked behind them.
Nothing.
"How did you know the way out?" he asked.
"I studied the map before we came," she said. "I always study the map before I go somewhere I might need to leave quickly." A pause. "Habit."
He thought about that. He thought about the two years of quiet, careful preparation that had preceded his arrival in her shop — the routes out of Oakhaven she had known before she needed them, the contact in Westholt she had cultivated before she knew she would need him, the contingency plans revised and re-revised in the second drawer of a desk in a back room. He thought about what it meant to have spent two years building that infrastructure, and what kind of loneliness accompanied that kind of preparation.
She held out the packet with his name on it.
"Yours to carry," she said.
He took it.
He put it in the interior pocket of the coat he was wearing — the coat she had acquired for him in Millhaven, practical and nondescript, the coat of a person who needed to be warm rather than a person who needed to be recognized. It sat against his ribs as they walked, the specific weight of paper that meant something.
They walked in silence for a while.
The road out of Millhaven was better maintained than Route C had been, wide enough for two carts to pass each other and edged with old stone walls that suggested centuries of use. He walked beside her in wolf form now that they were outside the town, and the transition back to this felt, as it always felt, both natural and limiting — the specific frustration of a form that constrained certain kinds of communication.
He thought about what she had said in the farmhouse two nights ago. *The road is still long. But it's not directionless.* He had understood what she meant when she said it — the distinction between flight and journey, the difference in how you moved when you knew you were going toward something rather than simply away from it.
He was still determining what he was going toward.
But he found, walking beside her in the pale afternoon light with his documentation in the interior pocket of a coat she had bought him, that the determination felt less urgent than it had before. Like a question he was carrying rather than a problem he had to solve before he could do anything else.
At dusk she stopped and opened the poetry collection.
Not to read — she held it the way she had held the papers in the early morning of their exchanges, with the specific quality of attention that was not directed at the thing being held but through it, toward something the thing represented. He sat beside her and watched her hold it and said nothing, because there was nothing to say that the silence was not already saying.
She said, eventually: "The road is still long."
"Yes," he said.
"But we know where we're going." She looked at him. "More or less."
"More or less," he agreed.
She closed the book and put it back in the bag.
They continued.
