The snow had stopped in the night.
She knew this before she opened her eyes — the quality of the light was different, the specific brightness of a world that had been covered in white and was now reflecting everything back at once. She lay in the waystation's thin blanket and looked at the ceiling and thought: today.
She had been carrying the question for two days. She had been carrying it with the specific intention of someone who had decided to ask it and was waiting for the right moment, not the perfect moment — she had learned, over the past several months, that waiting for perfect was a way of never arriving — but the right one. And she had woken this morning with the clarity of a sky that had finished its weather and was simply itself, and she understood that this was the moment.
She checked the decision carefully.
This was a habit she had — examining her decisions before she executed them, not to second-guess them but to understand them, to know what she was actually doing rather than what she told herself she was doing. She examined this one: she was going to ask Fenrir, directly, without the intermediary of paper or darkness or metaphor, whether he was here because he wanted to be or because he had nowhere else to go.
She had been afraid of that question for two months.
She was not afraid of it this morning.
She got up.
Fenrir was already awake — he was always already awake, she had stopped finding this surprising — lying near the door in the specific posture of someone who had been keeping watch and was now simply present. He looked at her when she came into the main room of the waystation, and she looked back, and the morning had the quality that mornings had been having recently: full in a way that mornings had not been full before.
She made tea from the small supply she had left in her bag. Two cups, automatically. She handed him his and sat down across from him.
The light through the waystation's small window was extraordinary — the particular white-gold of post-snow morning, the kind of light that made everything look both clean and significant. She sat in it and held her cup and let herself feel the specific quality of what she was about to do.
Then she said: "I want to ask you something."
He looked at her steadily.
"I need you to answer it honestly," she said. "Not the answer that's best for the situation. Not the answer you think I want to hear. The true one." She paused. "I know you can be strategic. I'm asking you not to be."
He held her gaze for a moment.
"Yes," he said. An agreement, not an answer.
She breathed.
"If there was no curse," she said. "If there was no Church, no empire, no Hoàng huynh, no necessity of any kind — would you be here? With me?"
The question sat in the air between them.
She had stripped it of everything that could complicate the answer — all the circumstantial justifications, all the things that made proximity convenient or logical or necessary. She had left only the core of it: is this chosen, or is this circumstance?
She waited.
She did not fill the silence. She had learned — was still learning — that some silences deserved to be inhabited rather than resolved, that waiting was not the same as enduring, that holding space for someone to arrive at an honest answer was not passive but was itself an act of respect.
He took the time.
She watched him take it — watched him sit with the question the way she had sat with difficult questions on paper in the dark, the specific inwardness of it, the quality of someone who was going somewhere and needed to go there properly before they came back.
Then he said: "Yes."
One word.
And then, because one word was not enough and he seemed to understand that: "Not because I have nowhere else to go. Not because you are useful to me. Because this is the place I want to be and you are the person I want to be with."
She heard it.
She let it arrive — did not immediately process it or assess it or file it in the appropriate category. She simply let it arrive and be what it was.
Then she said: "I want you to be here."
He looked at her.
"Not because you protect me," she said. "Not because you need what I know. Because you are who you are and I want you here."
The silence that followed was not the silence of things left unsaid. It was the silence of things said so completely that words had temporarily exhausted their function and what remained was simply the two of them, in the morning light, with everything that had been named still present in the air between them.
She looked at him.
He looked at her.
Neither of them moved.
After a while — she could not have said how long, time having done one of the things it sometimes did in significant moments and become less linear — he said: "I don't know how to do this."
She considered that.
"Neither do I," she said. "Completely."
He waited.
"But we've been figuring it out as we go for two months," she said, "and I think we've done reasonably well."
The corner of his mouth moved. Not quite a smile — the precursor to one, the expression she had been cataloguing since the first time she had seen it, which was in the lamplight of a room in Millhaven when she had said something that had landed with unexpected precision.
"Reasonably well," he said. The specific quality of the two words suggested that he found this characterization both accurate and insufficient.
"It's an honest assessment," she said.
"It is," he agreed.
She drank her tea.
Outside, the post-snow world was doing what post-snow worlds did — settling into its new configuration, the weight of white on every surface, the specific hush of a landscape that had been transformed overnight and was now quietly being itself in the new form. She looked at it through the window and thought about honest assessments and the specific courage of things named rather than circled, and she felt, sitting in the waystation's morning light with her tea and the person she had named, the particular quality of a thing resolved.
Not finished — there was a great deal that was not finished, would not be finished for a long time, might never be finished in the way that certain kinds of things were not finished but were simply ongoing. But resolved in the sense of having arrived somewhere true. Having said what was true and had it received as true.
She thought: two years of not saying things. And then six weeks of saying them through paper. And then this morning, in the light, simply saying them.
She thought: it turns out this was always available.
She had simply needed to stop being afraid of it.
They stayed in the waystation for another hour, not because there was reason to stay but because neither of them was in a hurry to step back out into the world quite yet. She read. He sat with the specific quality of stillness that was his version of the same thing. The fire burned low and she let it, because the light through the window was warm enough and the cold was manageable and she did not want to be busy.
When they finally stood to go, she looked at him across the small space of the waystation and felt, simply, glad.
Not the complicated gladness of things that cost something. Just glad. The uncomplicated version.
She picked up her bag.
"Ready?" she said.
"Yes," he said.
They went out into the white world.
