He was carrying something different.
This was not a metaphor — or rather, it was a metaphor, but it was also a physical fact, the specific quality of walking through a landscape while something in your chest has a different weight than it had the day before. He had carried many things in his life: grief, purpose, the specific weight of command, the weight of betrayal, the years-long accumulating weight of being used for things he had been told to believe in and had eventually stopped believing in. He knew the texture of weight.
This was different from all of those.
He walked beside her through the white world the post-snow morning had produced and thought about the words he had said — *you are the person I want to be with* — and felt them sitting in him with the particular weight of true things that had been said out loud for the first time. True things gained weight when they were spoken. He had known this in a general way. He had not known it in the specific way of a person who had just spoken something that had been true for some time and was now irrevocably spoken.
Evelyn was walking beside him with the quality she had been developing over the days of travel — present, attentive to the landscape, unhurried. She had not changed in any visible way since this morning. She was simply herself, moving through the world in the way she moved through it, and he found this — the fact that she had heard what he said and was still simply herself — obscurely reassuring.
He was afraid.
This required examination.
He had been afraid before, many times, in many configurations. He had been afraid before battles and after them, afraid in the specific way of someone who had assessed a situation and found the odds unfavorable. He had been afraid of the curse, in the early weeks, afraid of what it meant for his timeline, afraid of the specific vulnerability of a body that could not be relied upon. He had been afraid, these past weeks, in the way he had named to Evelyn — afraid of something happening to her, the fear that was not tactical.
This was different.
He was afraid because something was now real that had not previously been real in this specific way. He was afraid because *you are the person I want to be with* had been said and received and was now a fact in the world rather than a possibility in his own internal accounting, and facts in the world could be lost in ways that possibilities could not. You could not lose something you had not named. You could lose something you had named.
He thought: I have been naming things for two months, slowly, on paper, in the dark, in increments small enough that each one felt manageable. And this morning I named the thing underneath all the other things, in full light, and now it is real.
He thought: this is what it feels like to have something to lose.
He had thought he understood that feeling. He had been wrong.
Evelyn stopped at a stream to refill her water flask and crouched down at the edge of it and he sat beside her in the way he sat beside her now — close, not requiring occasion — and she handed him the filled flask without comment and he drank from it and handed it back and she put it in the bag and they continued, and none of this required words, and the not-requiring of words was its own kind of thing to notice.
He thought: I have been learning to notice things I did not used to notice. He thought: this is one of them.
The traveler came toward them from the north in the early afternoon.
Fenrir registered him at two hundred meters — the specific gait of someone moving fast with news, the way urgency expressed itself in the body even when the body was trying not to express it. He tracked the traveler without visible change in his own pace, monitoring, running the assessment.
The traveler stopped to speak with Evelyn because she was a person and he was a dog and that was the social logic of the road. He stood beside her and listened.
The Church had revised the reward. Significantly. And they had expanded the description — not just the silver-haired man now, but his companion. *A woman, dark hair, ran a bookshop in the neutral settlement of Oakhaven, believed to have information relevant to the search.* The traveler said it the way people said things they had heard and were passing along without personal investment, the way news traveled on roads — neutrally, as information rather than as threat.
Fenrir heard: she has been identified.
He had known this was possible. He had known it was probable, given the length of time they had been visible in Oakhaven and the thoroughness of the Church's inquiry network. He had been tracking it as a variable, had incorporated it into his assessments, had understood intellectually that the day would come when she was no longer adjacent to the search but part of it.
Knowing it and hearing it confirmed were, he was discovering, different things.
He felt something settle into him that was cold and clear and focused — not panic, not fear in the disorganizing sense. Something more like the clarity that came before significant action, the specific state in which everything non-essential fell away and what remained was simply what needed to be done. He had felt it before every campaign of consequence. He had felt it on the night he had stood over her with the wound still consuming him and decided not to use the leverage.
He felt it now.
The traveler moved on.
Evelyn looked at him.
"I heard," she said.
"I know," he said.
She did not look frightened — which was one of the things he had come to understand about her, the specific quality of her response to danger, which was not the absence of fear but the presence of something that sat alongside it and did not yield to it. She looked focused. She looked like herself.
"We need to change our approach," he said.
"Yes," she said. "Tell me what you're thinking."
He told her.
They walked and he laid out the revised threat assessment — the specific parameters of what had changed, the implications for their route and their timeline, the options as he saw them. She listened without interrupting, which was a quality of hers he had come to value specifically — the ability to receive information completely before responding to it, the discipline of not filling the space between sentences with reactions that might foreclose the analysis.
When he finished she was quiet for a moment.
Then she said: "We need to split up."
He had arrived at the same conclusion. He had been reluctant to say it first — not because he disagreed with it but because the word split had a specific resonance this morning that it would not have had yesterday. He had said *you are the person I want to be with* and now he was looking at the logic of temporary separation and feeling the distance between what he wanted and what was necessary.
But necessary was still necessary.
"Yes," he said.
"Three days," she said. "We pick a meeting point."
"The town of Harwick. There's an inn at the north end of the market square. Three days from now, midday."
She nodded.
She said: "We'll need to plan the split carefully. Our routes need to be genuinely separate — not just appearing separate."
They planned it. They did this the way they had been doing things together for the past several weeks: she brought the local knowledge, the civilian infrastructure, the specific understanding of how people moved and what looked normal; he brought the tactical assessment, the threat modeling, the understanding of how a search operation worked and what it was looking for. The plan that emerged was not what either of them would have arrived at alone.
This was, he thought, what they had been building toward.
Not the specific plan — that would change, had already changed several times and would change again. But the capacity to build a plan together, each contributing what they had, the result genuinely shared rather than one person's plan that the other was executing.
Evening. They made camp in a stand of trees, the last night together before the split.
She did not make the specific reference to it being the last night before the split. Neither did he. They ate what they had and she read for a while and he watched the perimeter and then she set the book down and they were both simply in the same place together, doing nothing in particular, and he found that the weight he had been carrying all day had not lessened but had changed quality — had become something he could hold rather than something holding him.
She said, eventually: "Are you all right?"
He considered the question.
"I am carrying something new," he said. "I am not accustomed to the weight of it yet."
She looked at him.
"I know," she said. Quietly, not as a correction but as a confirmation — she had noticed, had been carrying her own version of it, understood what he was describing without requiring it to be explained further.
"I'll be all right," he said.
"I know that too," she said.
They slept.
