They arrived at the same time.
This had happened once before — briefly, in the weeks after the competition, when the sessions had been finding their new shape — and then had not happened again, the timing drifting back to his-earlier and her-earlier with the irregularity of two people who had not discussed their schedules but had developed, through repetition, a reliable asymmetry.
Today the asymmetry resolved into simultaneity: they came through the entrance together, from opposite directions, meeting at the threshold with the specific quality of an unplanned coincidence that felt, when it happened, like something that had been going to happen eventually.
After you, he said.
She went through first, and he followed, and the cathedral received them in its usual way, the cherry trees acknowledging their arrival with the slow brightening it had come to associate with the beginning of sessions.
The session itself was easy in the way that the sessions had been easy since the day-after-the-fight reconciliation — the Resonance established quickly, the communication between them immediate and fluent, the work producing the specific quality of output that came from two Cadence Wielders who had stopped being careful with each other and had started being honest. He played the competition arrangement, which they maintained because the structure of it was sound and because abandoning it entirely felt like a loss of something worth keeping. She danced it with the quality she brought to things she had inhabited long enough to own.
At the break they sat down.
Not on the altar steps. She had drifted, over the past few sessions, toward the central cherry tree at break time — sitting at its base the way she had in the early mornings, the way she sat during the communion dancing. He had drifted with her, the way he drifted toward most things she moved toward without making a decision about it. They were sitting with their backs against the root system of the tree, which was large enough to accommodate two people at the angles they had settled into: she against the main root, he against the secondary one that curved away from it at approximately sixty degrees.
Close. Not as close as they had been during the dancing lesson, which had involved explicit physical proximity for functional reasons. This was the other kind — the proximity of two people who have stopped maintaining the distance they had been maintaining and have not replaced it with a new specified distance, and so have simply settled to wherever their presence naturally rests when not managed.
She was mending something.
He noticed this with a specific quality of attention that he recognized, belatedly, as recognition: she had been mending something the first day he had returned to the cathedral, before she told him the arrangement's stated purpose, before she said Aurelia Thorne, that is my full name. The needle and thread, the matter-of-fact competence of someone who had been doing their own mending for a long time.
He had been watching her for months. He had watched her since before he knew her name, since before he understood what she was doing in the cathedral or what she was dying from or what she had come to Oakhaven to accomplish. He had been watching with the attention he brought to Resonance and to music and to the few other things in his life that he found genuinely worth the cost of sustained attention.
She looked up.
He was not prepared for the specific quality of being looked at in the moment after he had been looking. Not the performance look, not the management look. The look that knew he had been watching and was not bothered by it, was perhaps — he was not certain about this, he was not always accurate about these things — was perhaps glad.
Neither of them looked away.
This lasted approximately one breath past the length of ordinary eye contact. He was aware of the cherry tree at his back and the Resonance warm in the roots against his spine and the amber at the edges of the late afternoon light and the distance between them, which was not much distance at all.
He moved.
Not dramatically. Not with the deliberateness of a decision. The way one moves when sitting against a cherry tree root that has a slightly different contour than expected — a small physical adjustment, a shifting of weight, a natural consequence of having been still for a period of time. The movement brought him perhaps three inches closer to where she was sitting.
She stilled.
Not pulling away. Not moving forward. The specific stillness of someone who is at a threshold and is considering it with the full attention of someone who takes thresholds seriously. Her needle was motionless in the fabric. The cherry trees were very quiet around them.
He was aware of his own heartbeat in a way he was not usually aware of it. The amber was present with an intensity it did not usually reach during the quiet moments between movement.
He thought: this is the place.
And then, with the clarity that sometimes arrived when the most important thing was also the simplest thing, he thought: not yet.
Not because he did not want to. Not because he was uncertain about what was happening between them — he was no longer uncertain about that. But because there was a difference between the thing being true and the moment being right, and the moment was not right yet, and some part of him that had been trained by this specific person to listen to the deeper logic of a phrase rather than only its surface correctly identified that the resolution of this particular passage was not where it appeared to be.
The consideration was mutual. He could feel that it was mutual — not in the Resonance sense, or not only in the Resonance sense. In the simpler sense of having spent enough time in close attention to another person that their deliberateness was legible to him.
She was the one who looked down first.
A single beat. Then she returned to the mending — the needle finding the thread, the small efficient movements resuming with the same practical quality as before, as if the threshold had been approached and noted and set aside for later consideration.
He looked at the cherry trees.
The afternoon light was doing its usual thing, the east-facing gaps going from their direct-illumination phase to the longer-shadow phase that preceded the end of useful daylight. The blossoms drifted. The Resonance in the three trees continued its steady pulse.
He said: there is a phrase in the second movement I want to rework. The transition at bar forty-one has been bothering me.
The notation issue or the Resonance issue, she said. Her voice was entirely normal. The needle moved through the fabric with its usual precision.
Both, he said. They are related.
Show me after the break.
He nodded.
They sat for the remaining break time without further conversation. The silence was the good kind — the kind that contained things rather than concealed them, the cathedral quiet around them and the cherry trees present and the amber at the edges of everything, and the threshold noted and set aside with the shared understanding of two people who know that a thing can be approaching without being here yet, and that the approach has its own integrity that the arrival should not interrupt.
He picked up Aetheris.
She stood and moved to her opening position.
He played the second movement, and the bar forty-one transition, and the Resonance between them had a quality it had not quite had before — warmer, more immediate, the harmonic alignment shifted a fraction closer than it had been at the start of the session. Not dramatically. Just enough to notice.
Just enough.
