Caelum came in the middle of a session.
Not a scheduled visit — there was nothing scheduled for today. He came with the specific quality that Valerius had learned to distinguish from his ordinary visits: the door opening without the usual preliminary pause, the absence of the social pleasantry that normally bridged his entrance into the space, the directness of movement that communicated that the information he was carrying could not be delayed for the courtesy of letting the current phrase finish.
Valerius lowered the bow.
Lysandra stopped mid-sequence. She looked at Caelum's face and her own expression settled into the specific neutrality he had seen her deploy when information was arriving that she was going to need to process without displaying the processing.
Henric Dove received a visitor last night, Caelum said. Not the informal one from three days ago. This one was official. A Council records clerk with a formal inquiry. They asked him about Order 47 specifically.
Lysandra was very still.
They know he is a witness, Caelum said. Not necessarily what he knows or how much — but they know he exists and they have found him. Farren stayed with him through this morning. Dove is not frightened, which is either courage or forty-seven years of experience with how slowly these things move.
Or both, Lysandra said.
Or both. He looked at her directly. This accelerates the timeline. The investigation is further advanced than the two to three week estimate I gave you last week. My current read is ten days to two weeks before Vey moves from investigation to action.
Valerius: what does action mean.
At the conservative end — surveillance. At the less conservative end — a formal identity challenge to Aurelia Thorne through the court entertainment program. At the aggressive end, which Vey is capable of but unlikely to choose without more certainty, a Council inquiry that would require her to appear and produce documentation.
And if the documentation does not satisfy the inquiry.
Caelum: then it becomes a question of what she actually is, rather than who she says she is. And a surviving Moonleaf practitioner has specific legal status under the original dissolution order. The order did not account for a scenario in which someone survived. The legal implications are — unclear. Which means they would be defined by whoever had the political position to define them.
Which is Vey, Valerius said.
Yes.
Lysandra said: we have known this was possible since the beginning.
Caelum: knowing it is possible and having it arrive with a specific deadline are different. I wanted you to have the updated timeline.
She nodded. Her expression was not afraid, which he had learned to read not as absence of fear but as the specific kind of steadiness that came from having already reckoned with what you were afraid of. She had been living alongside this knowledge since before she came to Oakhaven. The deadline was new. The knowledge was not.
What do we do, Valerius said.
He heard himself say it. Lysandra heard him say it. She turned to look at him — not sharply, not with correction. Just looking, with the quality of someone receiving something they had not been certain they were going to receive.
Caelum was already moving through the available options. He outlined the three fronts: Elowen's documentation work, which had produced a social history for Aurelia Thorne that would hold under informal inquiry and would require forensic-level scrutiny to deconstruct. His own procedural delay mechanisms, which he had already initiated in the form of a routine notification request through the Household Guard's oversight relationship with the court entertainment program. And the letter to Vey.
The letter, Lysandra said. You sent it?
Yesterday. He received it this morning, based on the timing of today's visit to Dove. The question is whether he calculates that the information Dove has is a sufficient cost to slow down.
He will, Lysandra said. He is methodical. He will calculate. He paused. It may slow him. It will not stop him.
No, Caelum agreed. It will not stop him.
The Solstice is five weeks away, Valerius said. If the delay mechanisms hold for two weeks, and Vey is still recalculating for another two weeks after the letter, we have the window we need.
Caelum: the if is carrying a great deal of weight in that sentence.
Yes, Valerius said. It is.
They went through the detailed planning for another twenty minutes — the specific steps, the contingencies, the communication protocols. Lysandra participated with the focused competence of someone who had been managing her own situation without backup for long enough that receiving backup required no recalibration period. She asked specific questions, contributed specific information, identified two points in the plan that required adjustment based on her knowledge of how the court program's administrative processes worked.
When Caelum left, the cathedral was quiet.
Valerius was at the music stand, not looking at the notation. Lysandra was near the central cherry tree, in the standing stillness that was not the professional stillness or the communion stillness but the third kind — the kind after significant information has arrived and is being absorbed.
You have known about Vey, he said.
She looked at him.
For a long time, he said. Since before Oakhaven.
Yes.
And you came here anyway.
Yes.
He looked at her. He thought about what it meant to do something when you knew the risk with specificity — not the abstract risk of uncertainty but the named risk of a specific threat that had already done the worst thing it was capable of doing to everyone you had ever loved.
Why, he said.
She was quiet for a moment. Not evasive — considering. She said: because there are things worth doing even when they are dangerous. She paused. And because this place is mine. Not legally. Not politically. But mine in the way that a thing is yours when you are the last person who remembers it and the last person who knows how to maintain it. I was not going to let that go without coming back to it.
He thought about the Nightbloom Lullaby and the communion dancing and the three cherry trees that had known her since she was a child.
He said: and the other reason.
She looked at him. The amber eyes, direct.
She said: I told you what I was afraid of losing. That should be sufficient.
He held her gaze.
Sufficient, she said again. And something in her voice was different from all the registers he had catalogued — not the performance voice or the working voice or the real voice. Something newer than any of those. Something that was arriving at the same time it was being spoken.
He picked up Aetheris.
From the beginning, he said.
She moved to her opening position.
They played the full arrangement, and the Resonance was the warmest it had been since the Surge event, and the cherry trees responded in full three-voice harmony, and the amber was everywhere in the late afternoon nave, and outside the cathedral the conspiracy continued its calculation, and the Solstice continued its approach, and neither of these things were in the room right now.
Right now there was only the music, and her, and the amber, and the specific quality of an afternoon in which two people have said what they needed to say and have let the music say the rest.
