Veronica Sterling did not lose negotiations. She had simply, in her analysis, opened too low.
This was the conclusion she reached after a day of the boy's continued failure to call the number on the card, and it was, she felt, a sound one. He hadn't refused. He'd deflected - I'm not looking for an arrangement - which in Veronica's experience was simply what people said when they wanted you to sweeten the terms. Everyone deflected at first. The deflection was part of the dance. You answered it not with argument but with a better offer, and the better offer, applied with sufficient force, dissolved the deflection every time.
So she escalated.
Leo's week became, abruptly, a siege of generosity. It started Tuesday with a gift waiting at his relocated locker - not chocolates this time but a watch, sleek and obviously expensive, in a box that probably cost more than his weekly food budget, with a card that read simply A token. - V.S. He returned it to the front office, baffled and faintly alarmed, asking them to send it back. By Wednesday there was a standing offer, conveyed through an intermediary, of a car and driver to take him to and from school. By Thursday Veronica had apparently funded - he learned this from an awestruck classmate - a complete refurbishment of the school's shabby music room, with a plaque, and had let it be known with studied casualness that she did this sort of thing for people whose company she valued, and that the company in question could be his to give.
It was, Leo thought, watching the gifts and gestures pile up around him like snow, completely overwhelming and somehow deeply lonely to watch, though he couldn't have said why at first. Each offering was lavish. Not one of them was personal. She didn't know what he liked. She'd never asked. The watch, the car, the music room - they weren't gifts for Leo, they were demonstrations of Sterling, statements of purchasing power aimed at a target, and the target happened to be him but could have been anyone the market had flagged as valuable.
The siege came to its head on Friday.
Veronica chose her moment with care - a busy corridor, plenty of witnesses, the social leverage of an audience. She intercepted him between classes, and the crowd, sensing theater, eddied and slowed to watch, and she laid it out for him plainly, in that low precise bored-edged voice, loud enough to carry.
"You've returned my gifts," she said. "All of them. I'll be honest, I find it tiresome, so let's dispense with the dance. I'll state my final position." She regarded him the way she might regard a contract awaiting signature. "Everything I have is considerable, and a great deal of it can be yours. Security for life. Doors you can't imagine opening. The protection of the Sterling name, which is not a small thing in this world. In exchange I ask only that you choose me - publicly, and exclusively - over the others. The President, the athlete, whoever else. You end the contest. You select Sterling." A small, certain smile, the smile of a woman who has never heard no and does not expect to start. "It's the most advantageous offer you will ever receive. I'd advise you to take it."
The corridor held its breath.
And Leo - who had spent two weeks gently deflecting, softening, finding the polite escape, who had never once met any of this strange world's overtures with anything but apologetic kindness - looked at Veronica Sterling laying out the purchase of his entire person as though he were a company to be bought, and felt something that wasn't quite anger but was firm in the way anger is firm, and did the thing he had not yet done to anyone here.
He said no. Plainly. To her face.
"No," Leo said. "I'm sorry, but - no. And I don't think I can soften it this time, because I don't want you to keep going, so I'll just say it straight." His voice was gentle but it didn't waver. "I'm not for sale. I'm not - Veronica, I'm a person. I'm not an arrangement or a selection or an asset you secure before you come of age. You can't buy me, because I'm not a thing that can be bought, and even if I could be, I wouldn't want to be, because that's - that's a terrible way to - " He stopped, gathered it, said it simpler. "I don't want your money. I don't want the watch or the car or the music room. None of it. That's not how I'd ever want somebody to - that's just not what I want. I'm sorry."
The silence that followed was absolute.
Veronica Sterling stood very still in the middle of the watching corridor, and Leo watched something happen to her that he didn't understand and that frightened him a little - watched the cool certainty on her face crack straight down the middle, watched a genuine, undisguised shock surface through it, the shock of a person whose deepest law of the universe has just been broken in front of witnesses.
Because she had no script for this. That was the thing. Veronica had a response prepared for every counter she could imagine - for haggling, for holding out, for playing rivals against each other to drive up the price. She had spent her life in a world where everyone, everyone, eventually named their number, and her entire formidable self was built on being the one who could always meet it. She had never once been told that there was no number. That the thing she was reaching for was not for sale at any price, not because she'd offered too little but because it could not be purchased at all. It short-circuited something foundational. He hadn't rejected her offer. He'd rejected the existence of offering. He'd reached into the only framework she had for understanding human beings and calmly informed her it did not apply to him.
"Everyone has a price," she said, and her voice came out with less certainty than it ever had, almost a question.
"I really don't think that's true," Leo said quietly. "And I don't think you actually believe it, either. I think it's just - safer to believe it. Than the other thing."
He didn't fully know what he meant by it. It was instinct - the same instinct that noticed Scarlett's exhaustion and Aria's fear and Chloe's loneliness, the part of him that couldn't help reading the person under the performance. And the performance Veronica was running was the most elaborate he'd met yet, all that armor of wealth and boredom and transaction, and underneath it, plain to him in the crack that had just opened in her face, was something he recognized because he'd carried his own version of it his whole life: the certainty that nobody wanted the actual you, that you were only ever valued for the thing attached to you, that the safest move was to get ahead of the rejection by deciding, first, that there was nothing there to reject anyway.
And because he saw it, he did the one thing she could not possibly have armored against, which was to treat her, in the middle of her shock, not with pity - he could see, even now, that pity would be the one thing she'd never forgive, that being pitied was the precise nightmare her whole hard glittering self existed to prevent - but as an equal. Levelly. Without flinching from her wealth and without bowing to it.
"Look," he said, gently but not softly, meeting her eyes straight on. "You don't have to buy people. I know that's - I know that's probably not how things have worked for you, and I'm sorry if it has, because that sounds genuinely lonely. But you could just - be a person who other people get to know. You don't have to lead with the Sterling thing. I don't care about the Sterling thing. If you wanted to actually be friends - real ones, no arrangement, no money, just two people who know each other - I'd be up for that. That's something I'd actually want. But it's not for sale, so you can't buy it. You'd just have to, I don't know. Show up. As yourself."
And then, because the bell was about to ring and because he could see she needed the corridor to stop watching her far more than she needed him to keep talking, he gave her a small nod - not dismissive, just an exit, a door held open the way he held all doors - and said, "I've got to get to class. But - the offer of being actual friends is real, if you ever want it. No strings. See you around, Veronica."
And he walked away, into the crowd, leaving the heiress standing alone in the thinning corridor with the wreckage of the only language she'd ever known for getting close to anyone.
Leo, for his part, spent the walk to class quietly worried that he'd made a powerful enemy. He'd been blunt - blunter than he liked to be with anyone - and she'd looked so stunned, and people with that much money presumably did not enjoy being turned down in front of an audience. He hoped he hadn't been cruel. He'd tried not to be cruel. He'd just - he hadn't been able to keep softening it, not when softening it only invited more, not when the kindest thing in the long run was to be clear. He hoped she'd be okay. He found, somewhat to his own surprise, that he meant it - that under the alarm at having a Sterling annoyed with him was a genuine, uncalculating wish that the lonely girl behind all that armor would turn out alright.
He had no idea - he never did - that he had just handed Veronica Sterling the single most destabilizing experience of her life, and that the destabilizing part wasn't the no.
It was the offer that came after it.
Because as Veronica stood alone in that emptying corridor, replaying it with the helpless precision of shock, the part that lodged in her - the part that would keep her awake that night and the night after - was not you can't buy me. She could almost have managed you can't buy me; she could have filed it as eccentricity, as a particularly stubborn negotiating position, as a problem of insufficient leverage. What she could not file, what had no place at all in the architecture of her world, was the thing he'd said with no leverage in it whatsoever, asking nothing, offering instead: if you wanted to actually be friends, real ones, no money, just two people who know each other - that's something I'd actually want.
He'd wanted something. From her. Not from Sterling - he'd been explicit, almost insulting, about not wanting Sterling - but from her, the part she'd written off, the girl who was just the thing the fortune was attached to. He'd looked straight past the only thing about her that anyone had ever wanted, declared it worthless to him, and then said the leftover part, the unwanted part, the actual her - that was the part he'd want to know.
Nobody had ever wanted that part. Nobody had ever, in her entire life, made an offer that the Sterling fortune made worse rather than better.
Veronica Sterling pressed one manicured hand flat against her chest, in the empty corridor, where something was happening that no acquisition had ever caused, and discovered that she did not have the faintest idea what to do - because for the first time since she was old enough to understand what her name was worth, someone had offered her the one thing she could not buy, refuse, or set a price on, and she wanted it, wanted it with a sudden ferocity that terrified her, and had absolutely no idea how a person went about simply showing up as themselves.
She had never been herself for anyone.
She wasn't sure, standing there, that she'd know how.
But she was Veronica Sterling, and Sterlings did not walk away from a thing they wanted simply because it was difficult to obtain - and so the shock, as she stood there, slowly, dangerously, began to reshape itself into something else: not the competitive interest she'd felt before, the buyer's interest in a contested asset, but something far more personal and far more perilous, a determination with her whole formidable will behind it.
She would have it. The real thing. The thing money couldn't buy.
She just had absolutely no idea, yet, that wanting it on those terms meant she had already, without noticing, stopped trying to buy him - and started, for the first time in her life, to actually fall.
