Veronica Sterling did not sleep.
This was, in itself, a novel and unwelcome experience. Sleep had always come to her the way everything came to her - on demand, efficiently, a resource she commanded rather than courted. But that night she lay in the enormous bed in the enormous quiet of the Sterling residence and found her own mind had stopped obeying her, looping instead, with humiliating persistence, around a single sentence spoken in a school corridor by a boy with a sad sandwich and no money at all.
That's something I'd actually want.
She turned it over and over, examining it from every angle the way she'd examine a clause in a contract, looking for the catch, the leverage, the hidden ask - because there was always a hidden ask, that was the first and most fundamental thing she knew about the world - and she could not find it. She looked all night and she could not find the angle. The boy had wanted something from her, yes - but the thing he'd wanted was the thing she'd spent her whole life certain nobody wanted, and he'd wanted it specifically instead of the fortune, had pushed the fortune aside like an obstacle to get at it.
It didn't fit. It broke the model. And Veronica had built her entire self on the model, so the breaking of it felt less like a discovery and more like a structural failure somewhere deep in the foundations.
By morning she had reached the only conclusion her sleepless analysis could support, which was the wrong one, and she reached it with relief, because a wrong conclusion that fit her framework was infinitely more comfortable than a right one that didn't.
The conclusion was: she had simply misunderstood the asset. The boy did not value money - fine, unusual, but not unheard of; some people valued other currencies. Status. Exclusivity. The thrill of being pursued. She had been crude, she decided. She had led with the crudest instrument in her case - cash - when this particular acquisition clearly required subtlety. She would simply adjust her approach. Pursue him in a different currency. Win him the way he apparently wanted to be won.
It did not occur to her - it could not yet occur to her - that wanting to be won at all, rather than purchased, was the entire point she was missing.
So she escalated, again, but sideways. She stopped sending gifts. She began, instead, to simply be where he was - arranging, through means available to a Sterling, to share his free period, to find herself in the library when he was there, to materialize at the edges of his day with an offered conversation instead of an offered watch. It was, she told herself, a refinement of strategy. A more sophisticated instrument.
It was also, though she'd have died before admitting it, the first time in her life she had ever sought someone's company for its own sake, and the novelty of it unsettled her more than the sleeplessness had.
The trouble was that Leo made it impossible to keep it strategic.
She'd planned, the first time she engineered a conversation, to be charming in the controlled Sterling way - to dazzle, to demonstrate her wit and breeding, to make herself an asset he'd be foolish to decline. But Leo didn't respond to any of that. He responded to none of the instruments she knew how to play. When she was witty and superior he just looked mildly puzzled, as though he couldn't work out why she was performing; and when, frustrated, she let a little of the performance slip - made an ordinary remark, an unguarded one - he lit up, engaged, asked her a real question, and treated the answer like it mattered.
"What do you actually like?" he asked her, once, in the library, apropos of nothing. "Not - I don't mean what's impressive. I mean what do you like. When nobody's watching and there's nothing to win. What would you do with an afternoon if it didn't have to be worth anything?"
And Veronica had opened her mouth to deploy an answer - something polished, something that demonstrated taste - and found, to her genuine alarm, that she didn't have one. That she did not actually know. That she had never once in her life done anything with an afternoon that didn't have to be worth something, had never had a preference that wasn't also a strategy, had been so thoroughly a Sterling for so long that the simple question what do you like, asked of the girl and not the fortune, found nobody home to answer it.
The silence stretched, and Leo, watching her face, didn't fill it or mock it. He just nodded slowly, like she'd told him something true and sad without meaning to.
"That's okay," he said gently. "You don't have to know yet. Most people figure it out by just - trying things. With no stakes. You could try that. Might be nice, having something that's just yours, that doesn't have to impress anybody."
It was such a small thing to say. It undid her completely.
Because this was the pattern, she was beginning to see, and the seeing of it frightened her: every move she made to acquire him, he answered by accidentally offering her something instead - and the things he offered were never things, they were always some small piece of being treated as a person, and she was starving for them in a way she had never let herself notice until someone started, carelessly, feeding her.
He didn't bow to the Sterling name. That alone was disorienting; everyone bowed to it. But he didn't sneer at it either, didn't resent it, didn't want to take it down a peg the way the few people brave enough not to bow usually did. He simply - set it aside. Looked past it to her, the actual her, with an easy unimpressed friendliness that treated a Sterling and a scholarship kid as precisely the same order of being: people, equally worth his attention, equally worth a real question. And he never, ever pitied her. She'd have known. She watched for pity the way a sailor watches for rocks; pity was the unbearable thing, the thing that confirmed you were less. But there was none in him. When he'd said that sounds genuinely lonely in the corridor, it hadn't been pity - it had been recognition, one person noticing another, offered level and clean with no condescension in it at all.
He treated her, in short, exactly as if she were a normal girl who happened to be worth knowing. And no one - no one, in the entire glittering transactional history of Veronica Sterling - had ever done that, because no one had ever been able to see past the fortune long enough to find the girl behind it and decide, on her own merits, that the girl was the part worth wanting.
Leo had decided it in a week. While turning down everything she owned.
She sat in the library across from him one grey afternoon, watching him help that strange little Vance sister with some equation, watching him be kind to someone who could do nothing for him, and felt the carefully maintained architecture of her certainties groan and shift.
I want this, she thought, and the thought arrived with the force of a thing long suppressed finally surfacing. Not the boy as an acquisition. Not the win. This. The way he looks at people. The way he looked at me, before he knew the name, would have looked at me exactly the same after. I want to be a person someone looks at like that. I want to be wanted the way he's offering - for the leftover part, the part that isn't for sale, the part I'd given up on anyone ever -
She shut the thought down hard, because it was too much, because it cracked something she did not have the tools to repair.
But she couldn't shut down what was underneath it, the deep need the whole long charade of her life had been built to hide: to be chosen for herself. Not selected the way she'd selected him, as the best asset on a market. Chosen. By someone who knew exactly what she was worth on paper and wanted, instead, the thing that wasn't on the paper at all. She had told herself for years that she didn't need that, that it was a fairy tale for people without fortunes, that the transaction was honest and the wanting was naive. And she'd believed it, mostly, the way you believe a thing that lets you sleep.
Leo had not let her sleep. Leo had said that's something I'd actually want and blown the whole comfortable lie wide open, and now she was a girl with a fortune and a private number and a refurbished music room with her name on a plaque, sitting in a school library aching, for the first time in her life, to be loved for free.
"You're staring," Leo observed mildly, glancing up from the Vance girl's equation. "You okay?"
"I'm assessing," Veronica said, automatically, reaching for the old armor.
"Assessing what?"
And Veronica Sterling, who had a polished answer for everything, found herself saying, before she could stop it, with a strange unfamiliar honesty: "I don't entirely know. That's somewhat new for me."
Leo smiled at her - a real smile, warm, pleased, like she'd done something good - and said, "That's allowed. Not knowing's underrated," and went back to the equation, and Veronica sat with her heart doing something undignified and her certainties in ruins and understood, dimly, that she was in serious trouble.
She was still going to have him. That much of the old Veronica survived intact; she did not relinquish things she wanted, and she wanted, now, with a depth that appalled her. But the wanting had changed shape entirely while she wasn't looking. She no longer wanted to acquire Leo Evans. She wanted to be the kind of person Leo Evans would choose - which was a far harder and far more dangerous ambition, because it could not be bought, or strategized, or won with any instrument in her case. It could only be earned by becoming, somehow, a girl who could answer the question what do you like. A girl who could just show up, as herself, with nothing for sale.
She had no idea how to be that girl.
But she was going to learn, she decided, with the full terrifying force of her formidable will - and it was only later, much later, walking out to the car that was worth more than the school, that she registered the other thing she'd seen in that library, the thing the old Veronica would have noticed first and the new unsettled one had somehow let slide right past: that she was not the only girl orbiting that boy. That the President's sister had looked at him over that equation with something soft and undefended in her face. That there were, the whispers had told her and her own eyes now confirmed, others. The President. The athlete. A whole contested field.
A week ago that knowledge would have meant only one thing to her: the asset was valuable, the competition validated the price, win the bidding. Now it landed entirely differently, with a sharp unfamiliar sting she was reluctant to name - because she didn't want to win him anymore.
She wanted him to want her. And he had, she now realized with a cold lurch, a great many other people offering him exactly the unbought, unstrategized, show-up-as-yourself thing she had only just learned to want and had no idea how to give.
Veronica Sterling got into her car, and did not tell the driver to go, and sat for a long moment in the expensive silence, feeling something she had spent her entire armored life ensuring she would never have to feel.
She felt like she might lose.
And worse - far worse, the thing that told her how completely she'd already fallen without noticing the edge - she found she was no longer afraid of losing the acquisition.
She was afraid of losing him.
