There was, Leo reasoned, a simple logic to it.
Four people wanted to try his lunch. He had one lunch. The polite thing - the thing that would defuse the swelling crowd, satisfy everyone's strange curiosity, and let him get back to the quiet anonymity he craved - was obviously to share it out, let everyone have a taste, and put an end to the whole baffling spectacle. It was the same instinct that had governed his entire life: smooth the situation, give people what they need, make the fuss go away by being accommodating. He'd shared lunches a hundred times in his old life. It meant nothing. It was just being nice.
He was, of course, catastrophically wrong about what it meant, but in his defense, nobody had given him the manual.
"Okay," he said, and gestured at the empty seats around his table. "Sit down, all of you, before this turns into more of a thing than it already is. There's enough for everyone to have a bit. Just - sit, please, you're all kind of looming."
And so they sat.
It was, Leo would reflect later, the single most tense meal of his life, and he hadn't even understood why at the time. Scarlett took the seat to his right with the rigid precision of someone occupying a fortified position. Aria dropped into the one on his left, bouncing slightly, radiating challenge. Chloe perched across from him, device abandoned, hands knotted in her cardigan sleeves. And Veronica arranged herself in the last seat with glacial poise, as though she sat down to share homemade bentos with commoners every day and found it tolerable.
The four of them did not look at the bento. They looked at each other - a swift, silent, four-cornered exchange of assessment, the look of duelists noting where everyone's hands were - and then, in unison, they looked at Leo, and the full weight of four expectant gazes settled on him as he picked up his chopsticks.
"Right," he said, oblivious to the undertow. "It's nothing fancy. Tell me if it's terrible."
And he served them.
He did it the way he did everything - thoughtlessly, attentively, with the small reflexive care that was simply how his hands worked. He divided the bento with neat economy and gave each of them a portion, and because he was a noticer, because he couldn't help it, he tailored each one without even registering that he was doing it. To Aria he gave the largest share and the most protein, because she'd run a race and athletes needed fuel. To Chloe he nudged the egg, because he'd half-noticed she'd eyed it first. To Scarlett he gave a careful balanced portion and said, quietly, "you skip lunch when you're busy, I've noticed - actually eat this one." And to Veronica he gave an equal share with no ceremony whatsoever, treating the heiress to precisely the same plain consideration as everyone else, which was - though he couldn't have known it - the single most flattering thing he could possibly have done to a girl drowning in ceremony her whole life.
Four small acts of attention, served alongside the food. None of them planned. All of them landing like artillery.
The four girls went still.
Because in the one-in-seven world, this - a man preparing food with his own hands and then serving it to you, personally, with care, having noticed what you in particular needed - was not a casual gesture. It was the gesture. It sat at the very summit of the world's romantic vocabulary, the thing that featured in every swooning story, the ultimate expression of devotion precisely because it was so vanishingly rare for a man to do any of it at all. To cook was extraordinary. To serve what you'd cooked, attentively, to someone specific - that was a declaration that left nothing to interpret.
And Leo had just done it. To four people. At once. While telling them it was nothing fancy.
"...Try it," he prompted, when nobody moved. "Before it gets cold. Go on."
They tried it.
And Leo, watching with the mild anxiety of any cook awaiting a verdict, saw four very different faces undergo four versions of the same quiet collapse.
Scarlett ate a careful bite, and Leo watched the composure she wore like armor falter at the edges - watched her chew slowly, swallow, and go very still, her eyes fixed on the middle distance with the expression of someone receiving information they weren't prepared for. It was good. That was the surface of it. Underneath the surface was a girl who couldn't remember the last time anyone had made her something with their hands, who'd told him to actually eat this one and heard, underneath his words, you skip lunch, I noticed, I want you fed, and who was discovering that being noticed and fed by someone who expected nothing back was a flavor she had no defenses against at all.
Aria ate hers in two enormous enthusiastic bites and then stopped, mid-chew, as the it's-just-fuel cover story collapsed under the simple fact of how it tasted and what it meant, and her face went soft and startled and then bright red, and she stared at the empty space in her portion like it had personally ambushed her.
Chloe took the smallest, most cautious bite, and Leo saw her eyes widen behind her glasses, saw her mouth the beginnings of some analytical remark about flavor compounds and then simply abandon it, defeated, because there was no formalism for this, no equation that captured being handed the egg you'd wanted by someone who'd noticed you wanting it, and the genius who measured everything sat there with a piece of rolled egg and no measurement available to her at all.
And Veronica - Veronica lifted a single elegant bite with the air of a connoisseur prepared to render a polite verdict, put it in her mouth, and stopped.
Leo watched the heiress's whole careful performance simply cease. He didn't understand it, but he saw it - saw the cool mask go, saw something raw and astonished surface in its place, saw her set down her fork with a hand that wasn't quite steady. Because Veronica had eaten in the finest restaurants on three continents. She had been served by chefs whose names were famous, food worth more per plate than most people earned in a week. And none of it - not one bite of any of it - had ever tasted like this, because none of it had ever been made by someone's own hands at dawn and served to her with the words equal share, no ceremony, by a boy who'd looked at the wealthiest girl in the school and given her exactly what he gave everyone else, which was simple, genuine, unpurchaseable care. The food wasn't better than her chefs'. The food was just food. It was everything around the food that her entire fortune had never once been able to buy, and she was tasting the absence of it now, all at once, in a school cafeteria, and it was the most devastating meal of her life.
"Is it okay?" Leo asked, into the loaded silence, anxiety creeping into his voice. "You've all gone quiet. Is it bad? You can say if it's bad -"
"It's not bad," four voices said, in near-unison, with four kinds of strangled intensity, and then the four of them looked at each other again - and this time the look had changed.
Because they'd each felt it, the same blow landing in the same undefended place, and they each saw, in the others' stricken faces, the unmistakable evidence that they had all felt it too. There was no more pretending. Not to themselves, not to each other. The look that passed between the four of them now was the look of rivals who have just confirmed, beyond any doubt, that they are all in deadly earnest, that this is real for every one of them, that the contest they'd each privately hoped might be lopsided in their favor was in fact four-sided and even and not going to resolve itself easily. They took each other's measure across the wreckage of a shared bento and understood, finally and completely, that they were evenly matched, equally caught, and not going anywhere.
Leo felt it. He didn't understand it, but he felt it - the temperature of the table, the charged silent thing crackling between the four of them, the way they kept looking at each other like opponents circling. And for once his misreading was at least in the right county: he could tell they didn't seem to get along, that there was some tension between these four very different people, and he felt, being Leo, immediately responsible for it.
"Hey," he said gently, into the crackling quiet, "I, um - I don't know what's going on between you all, and it's none of my business, but - you're all really great, you know? Like, individually. I think if you weren't, I don't know, whatever this is - " he gestured vaguely at the tension " - you'd probably actually like each other. You've all got more in common than you'd think." He smiled, hopelessly, sincerely, trying to make peace at a war he couldn't see. "Anyway. Thanks for trying the lunch. I'm glad it wasn't terrible."
Four girls stared at him - at this boy who had just, with no idea of what he'd done, fed them all from his own hands, noticed each of their private needs, devastated each of their defenses, and then gently suggested that they might all get along if they gave each other a chance - and felt, underneath the rivalry, the first faint disorienting tug of the thing Leo had named: that he might, against all odds, be right. That the girl across the table, the enemy, the competition, was reaching for the exact same thing she was. That they were, all four of them, the same kind of hungry.
None of them was ready to think about that yet. So they didn't.
Instead, four spines straightened. Four chins lifted, by varying degrees. And four young women, having confirmed the field and taken each other's full measure over a shared lunch, silently and simultaneously resolved that the time for circling was over - that whatever came next, it was going to come into the open.
"That was lovely, Evans," said Scarlett, rising with perfect composure and a dangerous glint in her eye. "Thank you."
"Yeah. Really good," said Aria, grinning fierce and bright. "You'll have to make it again."
"Nutritionally adequate," managed Chloe, pink to her ears.
"Quite acceptable," said Veronica, gathering herself, her mask back in place but her eyes burning.
And the four of them departed in four different directions, leaving Leo alone at the table with an empty bento box and the distinct, uneasy sense that he had just, somehow, made something considerably worse - without the faintest idea what, or how, or that the war he'd just tried to make peace at had only paused to reload.
