The bento was gone by one o'clock. Its effects lasted considerably longer.
That evening, in four different rooms across Oakhaven, four girls who had spent the afternoon pretending to think about other things discovered that they could think about nothing else - and that the thing they were thinking about was not, precisely, the food.
Scarlett Vance sat at her desk over Council paperwork that wasn't getting done, and gave up the pretense, and let herself remember it: the careful balanced portion, the quiet you skip lunch when you're busy, actually eat this one. She had been managed by experts her whole life. People handled her, deferred to her, relied on her. Nobody fed her. Nobody noticed she'd skipped a meal because she was carrying three committees and decided, without being asked, to do something about it. The portion had been balanced because he'd thought about what she needed. The instruction had been gentle because he'd wanted, simply, for her to be alright.
It wasn't the taste. She could have hired the taste. It was being cared for - being, for the length of one bite, the one provided for instead of the one providing - and the terrible truth she sat with in the lamplight was that she'd been starving for exactly that for years, and hadn't let herself know it until a boy handed her a portion of rice and told her to eat.
Down the hall, Chloe lay on her bed with the egg.
Not literally - the egg was long eaten - but she could not stop thinking about the egg. He'd noticed she'd looked at it first. That was the whole of it. A microscopic observation, beneath anyone's notice, the kind of trivial datum that fell below the threshold of significance for every other person who'd ever interacted with her - and he'd caught it, and acted on it, and slid her the egg without a word or a flourish, as though her small wordless preference were worth honoring. People noticed Chloe's mind. They marveled at her marks, consulted her on problems, valued the processor. Nobody had ever noticed that she'd wanted the egg. The egg was the human part. The egg was the part that wasn't useful, the part that just had small ordinary wants like anyone's, and he had seen that part and quietly given it what it wanted, and Chloe lay in the dark with her heart doing the thing her instruments could measure and her models could not, and understood that she was in very deep and getting deeper.
Across town, Aria couldn't sit still.
She paced her room, replaying it - the largest portion, the most protein, you ran a race, athletes need fuel. He'd fed her because she'd run, yes, but not as a reward - that was the thing that kept ambushing her. Everyone fed her victories. Everyone celebrated the wins, threw her the parties, sang her praises when she crossed the line first. He'd given her the biggest share not because she'd won but because she'd exerted herself and her body needed replenishing - because she was a person who'd gotten tired and needed feeding, the same as anyone, win or lose. He'd have given her the same portion if she'd come dead last. She knew it with sudden certainty. The care wasn't conditional on the victory. The care was just - care. For her. The animal of her, the tired human body of her, regardless of the scoreboard. And Aria, who had organized her entire existence around the terror that the love stopped when the winning did, pressed her hands to her hot face and felt the foundation of that terror crack clean through.
And in the vast quiet of the Sterling residence, Veronica Sterling had a revelation that rearranged her.
She had spent the afternoon, at first, trying to reassert control the only way she knew - by reaching for her phone to do what Sterlings did, which was to acquire the thing they wanted. She would simply hire a chef. The finest available. She'd have homemade food, beautiful food, food prepared by hands far more skilled than a sixteen-year-old's, served whenever she liked. Problem identified, problem solved, the Sterling way.
Her thumb had hovered over the screen for a long moment.
And then she'd set the phone down, because she'd understood, with the cold clarity that came to her rarely and changed everything when it did, that it wouldn't work. That it couldn't. That she could buy the finest chef on earth and it would not give her one particle of what she'd felt in that cafeteria, because the thing she'd felt had nothing to do with the food at all. A hired chef would cook because she paid them. That was a transaction - the only kind she'd ever known, the kind she'd always told herself was the honest kind. What had undone her at lunch was the precise opposite of a transaction: a boy who'd risen in the dark and cooked with his own hands and served her, an equal share, no ceremony, expecting nothing, wanting nothing, because that was simply how he treated people. The care was the whole point, and care could not be purchased, because the instant money entered it stopped being care and became service, and she had a lifetime of service and not one moment of care to show for all her fortune.
Veronica Sterling sat in her enormous empty room and confronted, fully, for the first time, the shape of what she'd been missing - and the fact that the one thing she'd never been able to buy was the only thing she'd ever actually wanted.
"It can't be bought," she said aloud, to the room, and it came out almost wondering. "I can't buy it. I genuinely cannot buy it."
It should have devastated her. In a way it did. But underneath the vertigo was something almost like relief - because if it couldn't be bought, then the fortune that had stood between her and every human being she'd ever met was, for once, irrelevant. Useless. And in its uselessness, for the first time in her life, Veronica was just a girl who wanted something, the same as anyone, with no advantage and no shield, which was terrifying and which was also, she realized, the only honest position she'd ever occupied.
Four rooms. Four girls. And though none of them knew the others were doing it, each arrived that night at the same conclusion, by four different roads.
This was not a passing thing. Not a crush, not an infatuation, not a contest over a prize. Scarlett, who had told her sister it would pass, knew now it would not pass. Chloe, who had measured it and hoped the data was wrong, had stopped hoping. Aria, who'd run at it expecting the wanting to burn off like everything else, had felt it only dig deeper. And Veronica, who'd come to acquire and found she'd been acquired instead, had given up the last pretense that this was about winning. It was real. For all four of them, in their four different ways, it was real, and it was serious, and it was not going to resolve itself by anyone quietly losing interest.
Which left only the question of what to do about it - and there, too, something was shifting, though none of them would have called it by name.
Because each of them, replaying that lunch, had been forced to notice the others. To see the rival's face undergoing the same collapse her own had. To recognize, however unwillingly, that the enemy across the table was reaching for the exact same impossible thing - and that the thing they were reaching for was not a trophy to be seized but a person, a specific kind one, who had told them all, gently, that they had more in common than they thought. They weren't ready to like each other. They were nowhere near that. But a grudging, prickly, involuntary respect had begun to form among the four of them, the respect of worthy opponents who have measured one another and found, to their mutual irritation, no one to dismiss - and underneath even that, fainter still, the first unwelcome flicker of recognition: she's like me. She wants what I want. She's hungry the same way I'm hungry.
None of them welcomed the flicker. All of them felt it.
And Leo, the unwitting center of all of it, sat in his own quiet flat that evening washing a single empty bento box, troubled by a vague unease he couldn't place. Something had happened at lunch. He'd felt it - the strange charged tension among his four friends, the way they'd looked at each other, the way the air had crackled. He didn't understand it. But he'd started, lately, to feel like the ground was shifting under him in ways he couldn't track, like he was at the center of some large machinery whose workings he couldn't see, and the not-seeing was beginning to wear on him.
He dried the bento box and set it on the shelf, and stood for a moment in the small quiet kitchen, and let himself feel, briefly, the loneliness he usually kept at bay with busyness and politeness and the careful management of everyone else's needs.
I just want some normal friends, he thought, not for the first time. Why does everything here have to be so complicated? Why can't I just - have lunch with people, and help where I can, and be left alone, and have it be simple?
He didn't have an answer. He suspected, with the particular tiredness of a person who keeps trying to shrink and keeps being magnified, that there wasn't one - that this strange world had decided what he was the moment he arrived and was never going to let him be the small quiet ordinary thing he wanted to be.
He turned off the kitchen light.
He had no way of knowing that four girls, in four rooms across the city, had each just decided, independently and irrevocably, that they were done circling - and that the next time the four of them converged, it would not be over a borrowed bento or a track meet or a clipboard's flimsy pretext, but openly, deliberately, with the gloves finally and fully off.
