Professor Kuroda's office was on the fourth floor of Building C, at the end of a corridor lined with photographs of student projects from the past thirty years. Sera had walked this corridor many times. She knew the projects by decade from their aesthetic: the analog-heavy work of the nineties, the self-conscious digital experiments of the early two-thousands, the gradual return to materiality in the last ten years. She knew which frames had the glass replaced and which still had the original, slightly warped with age.
She did not know why Kuroda had asked her to come.
The message had arrived Thursday morning, terse and unscheduled: *Come to my office this afternoon. 3pm. — K.* No subject, no context. Kuroda communicated like this often — the brevity was not coldness but efficiency, the compression of someone who had been at this university for twenty years and had learned that most things worth saying were shorter than people made them.
Sera knocked at three exactly.
“Come,” Kuroda said.
The office was small and extremely organized, the kind of organization that had nothing to do with tidiness and everything to do with the arrangement of information for quick retrieval. Books marked with specific-colored tabs. Folders labeled in a system only Kuroda fully understood. On the desk, two monitors showing what appeared to be audio spectrograms from the archive.
Kuroda was a small woman with a precise manner and gray-streaked hair kept short. She had been Sera’s academic advisor since second year. She had the quality of certain senior academics who had been in the field long enough that they no longer needed to perform their authority; it simply existed, quietly and completely, in the way they occupied a room.
She looked at Sera over the monitors.
“Sit,” she said.
Sera sat.
“I’ve been watching the *One Hundred Sounds* project,” Kuroda said. She picked up a folder and opened it without looking at it, which meant she had already looked at it thoroughly. “Fifty-eight documented sounds in five weeks. Consistent technical quality. Strong contextual documentation. The acoustic range is impressive — you’re getting frequencies most students don’t even think to look for.”
Sera waited.
“I want it for the Spring Festival exhibition,” Kuroda said. “As your graduation project. Official submission. Which means it goes in the main hall, not the student corridor, and it goes with full institutional support — budget for display equipment, space allocation, the exhibition notes in the program.”
A pause.
“The Spring Festival is eight weeks away,” Sera said.
“Yes.”
“I have forty-two sounds remaining.”
“I know.” Kuroda looked at her directly. “Forty-two sounds in eight weeks is approximately five per week. You’ve been averaging eleven. The mathematics are comfortable.”
“The mathematics assume consistent conditions.”
“They do,” Kuroda said. Not dismissing the point. Acknowledging it. “Sera.”
She had not called her by name in this meeting yet. Sera registered this shift.
“The project is good work,” Kuroda said quietly. “I’ve been here for twenty years. I know the difference between a student project and a piece of work. This is a piece of work. It deserves to be seen properly.” She paused. “And sound doesn’t wait.”
The phrase landed the way specific things landed when they were accurate in more dimensions than their speaker intended.
Sera looked at the spectrograms on the monitors. She recognized some of them as archive recordings she had submitted as coursework last year — Kuroda had been watching the project development since before Sera had declared it formally, which was the kind of attentiveness that a person only received from an advisor who had decided the work was worth watching.
She thought about forty-two sounds and eight weeks and thirty-seven days of spring and the specific acoustic of a campus that was going to be different next year and the year after that, the buildings changing and the trees growing and the grounds being modified and the sounds that existed right now in this specific configuration of this specific place never occurring again in quite this form.
She thought about a recorder that had been underwater and was now better than before.
She thought about *always be…*
“Yes,” she said.
Kuroda nodded once. “I’ll file the paperwork today. You’ll receive the official confirmation by Monday.” She closed the folder. “The display format — what are you planning?”
“Listening stations,” Sera said. Her mind was already running the logistics, the way it always did when a plan became real and the variables needed managing. “Ten stations, ten sounds per station, organized by acoustic character rather than by location or date. Headphones at each station. A map of the campus with the recording locations marked, accessible at the entrance.”
“And the display case?”
“The recorder,” Sera said. “And the notebook.”
Kuroda looked at her.
“The documentation is part of the work,” Sera said. “The list, the methodology, the physical process. The recorder and the notebook in a case at the center of the room. The sounds are what you hear. The objects are proof that someone made them.”
A pause. Then Kuroda said: “Good. Say more in the exhibition notes.”
Sera almost smiled at this.
She left Kuroda’s office at three twenty-five and stood in the corridor among the three decades of student projects and looked at the fourth-floor window, which faced west and was taking the full late-afternoon sun, the light very direct and very gold.
Official submission. Spring Festival. Eight weeks.
She took out her phone and wrote a message.
*Rooftop session tomorrow still good? And — the project is official now. Exhibition in the main hall at Spring Festival. Need five sounds per week minimum from here. Can you do that schedule?*
She looked at the message for a moment before sending it. It was more than she usually sent — she tended toward minimum necessary information in text messages, the same compression she applied to her notebooks. This was longer. More information than strictly required.
She sent it.
The reply came in forty-seven seconds, which was faster than she expected.
Riku: *Rooftop tomorrow yes. The official exhibition — congratulations. That’s right. Five sounds per week, I can do that. Seven if you need it. Saturday mornings are free too.*
A pause of fifteen seconds.
Riku: *What’s the exhibition format? I’ve been thinking about display acoustics.*
She looked at this second message for a longer moment.
*I’ve been thinking about display acoustics.*
He had been thinking about her project. Not because she had asked, not as part of their arrangement, but because it had become something he thought about independently, in the space of his own attention.
She wrote back: *Listening stations. Come to the archive room tomorrow after the rooftop session. I’ll show you the plan.*
Then she went down the corridor and down the stairs and out into the afternoon.
The Blue Stairway was empty at this hour — the late rush had ended, the evening activities had not yet begun, and the stairway was in the particular between-state it occupied a few times each day: belonging to no one, available to whatever came next.
Sera sat on the third step from the bottom, the warmest one, and opened her notebook.
She wrote: *Exhibition confirmed. Spring Festival, main hall. Eight weeks.*
Below that: *42 sounds remaining. This is sufficient.*
Below that, after a pause: *sound_059: Blue Stairway, 1528hrs, spring light through early leaves, the specific silence of a plan that has just become real.*
She had not recorded it. The recorder was in her bag. But she wrote it anyway, because some things existed whether or not you had the equipment to capture them, and the discipline of the notation was partly in learning to trust that the thing had happened even when you could not prove it.
She would get sound_059 properly at another time. She knew this stairway. She knew its hours. She would come back when the conditions aligned and the recorder would be ready and the light would be doing something specific through the leaves and she would press record and the take would be clean.
For now she sat in the late afternoon and let the project be officially real and thought about what it meant to document a place so completely that proof remained of everything it had been.
The campus was still going, all its sounds continuing without her: the bicycle bells and the bird arguments and the elevator’s two-tone chime and the vending machine’s calibration cycle and the HVAC systems in the building walls and the thirty-two hertz resonance of a gymnasium built in nineteen seventy-eight. All of it ongoing, indifferent, not requiring documentation to exist.
But existing more fully, she thought, because someone was paying attention.
The evening came in from the sea.
The light through the cherry leaves was different from the light through the blossoms — greener, denser, the summer beginning to assert itself through the end of spring. She noted this. She did not record it. She just sat with it, the way you sat with things that were in the process of happening, that had not yet become the past.
Tomorrow: the rooftop. North wind. The wind chimes on the music building’s exterior that rang at a specific frequency when the conditions were right. Sound_059 or sound_060, depending on what she got first.
Eight weeks.
Forty-two sounds.
Spring, still happening, full of itself and specific and entirely present and not, she thought, going anywhere before she had what she needed.
She stood and put the notebook away and went down the Blue Stairway and across the campus toward the dormitories, her recorder in her hand, the evening light on the stone, the specific sound of her own footsteps through the early-May afternoon that was already, before she reached the door, becoming a memory.
She pressed record without breaking stride.
She was going to get all one hundred.
The rooftop of the sports complex was accessible via a door at the end of the fourth-floor maintenance corridor, opened with a key that Riku had borrowed from the grounds office three semesters ago and had not yet returned because returning it had never been convenient and because having it had, on three separate occasions, been useful.
This was the fourth occasion.
The roof itself was not scenic. It was a flat, functional surface covered in waterproofing material and occupied by HVAC units, antenna mounts, and the kind of equipment that buildings required on their tops and that no one thought about unless something went wrong with it. The view was good — the campus spread below, and beyond it the city, and at the far edge of the city the sea, which this morning was very blue in the early light and moving in the way the sea moved when the north wind was up.
The north wind was up.
Sera felt it before she heard it — the temperature drop when they stepped through the roof door, the air moving across her face from a specific direction, the specific quality of sea air that was saltier than the campus air below and carried a different acoustic signature because of it.
“The chimes,” she said.
Below them, on the exterior of the music building to the northeast, a series of metal tubes had been installed fifteen years ago by a music department faculty member who had subsequently left the university. The installation had been controversial at the time and was now simply a feature of the campus, accepted with the equanimity that institutions developed toward things that had outlasted their original controversy. The tubes were approximately two meters long, suspended at varying heights, and when the north wind came in from the sea they rang at a frequency that was not quite random — there was a pattern to it that depended on the wind speed and the tube lengths, a kind of mechanical chord that repeated with slight variations.
She had been trying to get a clean recording of this for a year.
The conditions today were, as the forecast had promised, exactly right.
“We need to be positioned above the chime plane,” she said, moving toward the northeast corner of the roof. “The sound rises. If we’re at street level it gets mixed with too much ambient. Up here we’re receiving it directly.”
Riku followed, carrying the directional microphone in its case. He had also, she noticed, brought a small wind gauge, which she had not asked for and which was, she recognized, the kind of thing he brought to sessions now as a matter of course: tools that anticipated requirements she had not stated because he had been paying enough attention to know what the conditions would require.
She had stopped tracking these instances individually. There were too many of them.
“Wind speed?” she asked.
He checked the gauge. “Fourteen kilometers per hour, north-northwest. Steady.”
“That’s the range,” she said. “Below twelve it doesn’t fully activate all the tubes. Above eighteen it starts producing turbulence noise that muddies the recording. Fourteen is ideal.”
“How often does it hit fourteen?”
“About three times a spring, in my experience.” She was already positioning the recorder. “This is the second time this year.”
“You’ve been waiting for this.”
“Since the semester started.” She looked at the position and adjusted by three centimeters. “I had it once last year and the recorder was in a different position and I clipped the upper frequencies. I’ve been planning the correction.”
Riku set up the directional microphone without being asked, positioning it in the configuration they had been using for elevated recordings since the gymnasium channel session. He checked the angle, adjusted by five degrees, checked again. She watched his positioning and found it correct without needing to correct it.
This had been happening more often too.
“Ready,” he said.
She pressed record.
The chimes were already audible, but she let the recorder run for thirty seconds of pre-ambient before they entered the frame, building the acoustic context of the rooftop: the wind itself first, the city below second, the equipment hum of the HVAC units third. Then, rising through all of it, the chimes.
They were unlike most of what she had recorded this semester. The pure tones of the metal tubes, partially random and partially patterned, a chord that had been composed not by a composer but by a maintenance crew following specifications written fifteen years ago for a sound installation that had survived every budget review because no one had gotten around to removing it. It was the sound of a place’s past persisting into its present, the acoustic residue of a decision that had long since been forgotten by everyone who made it.
She held completely still.
Beside her, Riku was doing the same.
The wind held steady at fourteen kilometers per hour. The chimes rang their patient, mechanical chord. The sea was visible at the horizon, moving in the same wind that was moving the tubes below them, the same pressure system producing sound on a rooftop in a campus in a coastal city on a Friday morning in May.
Four minutes and thirty-two seconds.
She pressed stop.
The wind continued. The chimes continued. Only the recording had ended.
She reviewed the waveform on the recorder’s screen. The frequency range was correct. The clipping issue from the previous year had not recurred. The take was clean.
“Sound_060,” she said.
She wrote: *sound_060: rooftop, sports complex, chime installation, music building exterior, north wind 14kph, 0924hrs, 4min32sec, clean take.*
Sixty sounds. Forty remaining.
She looked at the number.
Two-thirds of the way.
“Sixty,” Riku said, reading it from her notebook angle without asking.
“Sixty,” she confirmed.
He was quiet for a moment. The wind moved through them both, the sea air with its salt and its cold, the chimes still going below them.
Then he said: “When I was nine years old, my grandfather took me to a temple in the mountains that had wind bells on every gate. He said the monks put them there because they believed that sound carried prayers further than silence did. That if you rang a bell the sound went somewhere, accomplished something, in the air between the bell and the sky.”
She looked at him.
“I’m not saying I believe that,” he said. “I’m just thinking about sound that exists in order to travel somewhere. Not to stay.” He looked at the chimes below them. “Yours is the opposite. You’re catching the sound before it travels. Keeping it.”
“Both are about proof,” she said. “The bell rings to prove the prayer happened. I record to prove the sound happened.”
“Is that enough? Proof that it happened?”
She thought about this. About the forty seconds of her grandmother’s voice and the words *always be…* trailing into damaged silence. About the gymnasium recording from 1978, the wet concrete becoming floor. About a scratch on a recorder screen that had survived a pond.
“It’s what I have,” she said. “So yes. It’s enough.”
He nodded. He did not push for more, which was right.
They stood on the rooftop for another few minutes while the wind held and the chimes rang and the campus went about its morning below them, all its sounds continuing without needing to be collected or preserved or proved. She let it happen around her without recording any of it. Just being in it, the way you were in things before you knew they were worth keeping.
This was the part that did not go in the notebook.
Later, in the archive room, she showed him the exhibition plan: the ten listening stations, the floor layout, the map of recording locations. He looked at it with the focused attention he brought to design problems, asking technical questions about speaker specifications and headphone types and the acoustic treatment the main hall would require to avoid echo interference.
He had brought a notebook of his own. He took notes.
“The Makers Lab booth,” he said. “At the festival. The one they paired with your CLB.”
“What about it?”
“I’ve been thinking about it as a standalone display. But if they’re adjacent to your exhibition…” He stopped. “Condition two. I know.”
She looked at him. Then she said: “Tell me what you’re thinking.”
He looked up from the notebook.
“You said the exhibition is about proof. That someone made the sounds. The recorder and the notebook in the case." He chose his words carefully. "The haptic chamber is about a different kind of proof — that sound exists as a physical experience, not just an auditory one. If they’re adjacent, the two things are in conversation.”
She thought about this.
A recording of a building being born, felt through headphones. A space designed to make the same frequencies felt through surfaces. The documentation and the experience, side by side. Proof and presence.
“Same space, different access,” she said.
“Yes,” he said. “Exactly that.”
Outside the archive room, the campus continued. Eight weeks of spring remaining. Forty sounds to find. Two projects about to become adjacent.
She opened her notebook to a fresh page.
“Saturday,” she said. “The athletic field at six-thirty a.m. The groundskeeper uses a specific mower with a characteristic frequency signature that I’ve been trying to capture in the right conditions.”
“Six-thirty,” he said. He did not look pained about six-thirty.
“Bring the directional mic and the wind screen.” She began writing the Saturday plan. “And coffee. Building C machine is fine.”
A pause.
“Building C,” he repeated. “You said Building C is fine.”
“The A machine is closer to the athletic field from the engineering side,” she said, without looking up. “It’s more efficient.”
She heard the small sound he made — not a word, something shorter, something at the edge of expression. She kept writing.
*Sat: athletic field 0630. Mower session. Wind screen essential.*
Forty sounds remaining.
Eight weeks to spring’s end.
She was going to get all one hundred.
You've reached the end of this chapter
Professor Kuroda's office was on the fourth floor of Building C, at the end of a corridor lined with photographs of student projects from the past thirty years. Sera had walked this corridor many times. She knew the projects by decade from their aesthetic: the analog-heavy work of the nineties, the self-conscious digital experiments of the early two-thousands, the gradual return to materiality in the last ten years.
