Monday.
Sera woke with the specific awareness that something had changed — not in the world, which was doing what it always did in the early morning of a late-May Monday, but in her own orientation toward it. She lay in bed for a moment and ran through it: ninety-four sounds, six remaining, five days, one cricket she had been tracking for three weeks in the north garden.
And: yes. And: after.
She did not know exactly what shape the after would take. She did not need to know yet. She had learned, over two years of living with uncertainty, that the shape of things revealed itself through the process of being in them, not through pre-planning what they would be. The archive was evidence of this: she had not known in March what sound_094 would sound like. She had known it would exist and had prepared to receive it when it arrived.
The after would arrive. She was prepared.
Sumi was asleep with the specific completeness of a person who did not have an 8am class on Mondays, which was a schedule optimization Sumi had been making since first year and which Sera had, for equal and opposite reasons, never been able to replicate. She moved through the morning routine without waking her and was out of the dormitory by seven-thirty.
The campus on Monday morning had its own character: the week beginning, the specific sound of an institution returning to itself after the relative quiet of the weekend. She documented this without pressing record — just the mental notation, the filing, the habit that had become part of how she moved through the world.
The north garden session was scheduled for evening. The cricket was a post-sunset phenomenon: it became active as the temperature dropped and the light faded, and the optimal recording window was the first forty minutes after sunset when the garden had quieted from its daytime state but the temperature was still warm enough for consistent activity.
She had seventeen previous failed attempts.
Not failed technically. Failed in the sense that the conditions had been wrong each time — other insects, wind, a maintenance worker with a leaf blower at the wrong moment, once a group of students who had decided the north garden was a good place to have a conversation and had occupied it for the full post-sunset window. She had the cricket on record from a distance, captured incidentally in another take, but she needed it clean and close and solo.
Tonight the conditions were good. The forecast held. She had one day left after tonight for weather-dependent sounds.
Riku arrived at the north garden at seven fifty-eight, as she had known he would.
It was different, she noticed, knowing he would be there and arriving to find him there. Not different from the fact of his presence, which had been consistent for the whole semester. Different in what her response was to it: she was, she registered, glad. Simply and specifically glad, the way you were glad to hear a sound you had been anticipating — the harbor bell on a northwest wind, the dawn chorus beginning its first call. Not surprised. Just: yes, there it is. Good.
They set up near the north garden's central bed where the cricket had been residing. She explained the location: a specific patch of ornamental grass at the northeast corner, established territory, the individual she had been tracking had been there every evening for twenty-two days.
“How do you know it's the same one?” he asked.
“The fundamental frequency,” she said. “Every cricket's song has individual variation, like a vocal fingerprint. This one has an unusual high fundamental — about eight percent above the standard for the species. I've been able to pick it out from the others in the garden since week nine.”
He was quiet for a moment.
“You've been tracking a specific individual cricket by its vocal frequency for three weeks,” he said.
“Four,” she said. “I first noticed it in week eight but didn't positively identify the location until week nine.”
He looked at the northeast corner of the garden with the expression he wore when something had reorganized his understanding of a thing. She had learned to read this expression: it was not surprise exactly, more like the adjustment of a reference point.
“Okay,” he said.
They waited.
The post-sunset period in the north garden had its own acoustic texture: the campus sounds settling from their daytime register, the distant city doing its early-evening shift, the specific quality of air that existed in the narrow window between day and night when both were present and neither dominated. She had been in this window dozens of times this semester. She had documented parts of it. But she had not sat in it like this before, with someone beside her who was simply also in it, not managing anything, not filling the time.
The cricket began at seven minutes after sunset.
She heard it before she had time to consciously identify the sound: the specific high fundamental she had been listening for all semester, a frequency she would have recognized in a crowded room, in a storm, in any conditions. She pressed record and held very still.
Riku held still beside her.
The cricket sang.
It was, she thought, exactly itself: the individual call of a specific insect in a specific garden on a specific evening in late May, the frequency pattern she had memorized through weeks of listening and which was, acoustically, nothing special — one field cricket among the thousands in the greater campus area — and which was, for reasons that had nothing to do with the technical specifications, exactly what it needed to be.
She ran four takes. Three minutes of clean solo call, then a pause, then the cricket went quiet for six minutes while she and Riku did not move and did not speak. Then it began again and she ran two more takes.
In the pause between the second and third takes, Riku shifted slightly.
Not much. Two centimeters, maybe three, in her direction. The garden was dim now, the path lights on the campus giving a low ambient illumination that made edges visible but not details, and in this low light the shift was barely perceptible.
She was aware of it precisely.
His shoulder was approximately eight centimeters from hers. This was closer than working distance. This was the distance of someone who had not been calculating the distance because the distance had stopped being the relevant variable.
She did not move away.
The cricket sang.
*Sound_095: north garden, cricket, post-sunset window, high fundamental individual, solo call, 2031hrs, four takes.*
Ninety-five sounds. Five remaining.
She wrote the entry in the dim garden with the path light throwing just enough illumination on the notebook page, and he was beside her at the distance that was not working distance, and the campus was doing its evening around them.
“We should go,” she said. Not because she wanted to. Because the session was done and the cricket had gone quiet again and the path back to the dormitories was better navigated before the lights went to their lowest setting at nine.
They went.
The north campus path ran through a section that was poorly lit even at normal hours, and she navigated it by memory and by the ambient light of the city beyond the hill. Beside her, he walked at her pace, which was a thing he had been doing for months without her having to ask.
“How many evenings,” he said. “For this cricket. Coming out here alone.”
She thought about it. The count was in the notebook. She did not need the notebook. “Seventeen.”
He was quiet for two steps.
She did not look at him, but she was aware of the quality of the quiet: not the usual processing quiet, not the comfortable nothing-to-say quiet. Something more interior.
“Seventeen evenings,” he said. Just acknowledging it. The number as the thing it was: seventeen evenings alone, tracking a sound that was worth the tracking, in a garden that was empty otherwise.
“I almost gave up on it,” she said. “Week eleven. I thought the window was too narrow and the conditions were too variable and I should substitute a different sound.”
“What changed?”
She thought about it. What had changed in week eleven was approximately the notebook page and the archive room and a Tuesday afternoon on the music building wall. What had changed was the pace.
“I decided it was worth waiting for,” she said.
The north campus path opened onto the wider path near Building C, and the lights were better here and the evening was warm and they were walking at the pace of people who were not in a hurry to arrive at the fork.
Five sounds remaining. Four days.
She was not in a hurry for those either, she thought. They would arrive. She would be there.
They parted at the fork.
She went right, as she always did, and she did not look back, and she registered — as she had been registering things all semester, with the care of someone who kept records — that this parting felt different from the partings before the harbor evening.
Not worse. Not better. Different: more deliberate on both sides, the goodbye holding something that the previous goodbyes had held only in potential.
She was almost to Building C when she stopped.
The path had a specific acoustic at this hour: the path lights buzzing very slightly at their 60-hertz operational frequency, the distant campus sounds at their evening register, the specific quality of stone path under foot that changed with temperature and humidity. She had walked this path hundreds of times this semester. She had documented none of it specifically, because the path was transition rather than destination, the space between the session location and wherever she was going next.
She pressed record.
Thirty seconds of the night path between the north campus and Building C, with all its sounds: the lights, the stone, the distant city, the specific quality of a campus evening in the third week of June.
She stopped recording and looked at what she had.
Not one of the six. Not one of the hundred. Just a recording she had made because she was here and this moment had a sound and she wanted to have it.
This was, she thought, what came after the project. Not the absence of recording. Not the end of paying attention. The continuation of both without the formal structure of a numbered archive, sounds made because she was present and wanted proof of the being there.
This was what her grandmother had meant, maybe. *Always be—*
Here. In the specific places you inhabit, receiving them with all of yourself, keeping the evidence not for documentation but for love of the thing.
She put the recorder away and went inside.
Sumi was awake, which she had expected, and was doing the not-saying-things thing with a level of effort that was visibly considerable.
“We got the cricket,” Sera said.
“Sound ninety-five,” Sumi said.
“Five remaining.” Sera set her bag down. She took out the recorder and did the file check and found the takes clean and properly saved and exactly what she needed. “Four days.”
“And then the exhibition,” Sumi said. “And then summer.” She paused. “And then the rest of the year, and then graduation, and then whatever comes after that.”
Sera looked at her.
Sumi was looking back with the expression of someone who was being very careful not to say more than was warranted. She was managing this with mixed success.
“You went to get the cricket,” Sumi said. “And you got it. That’s the story.”
“That’s the story,” Sera agreed.
“With Riku.”
“With Riku.”
Sumi made the sound again — the involuntary one. She had been making it at irregular intervals since the harbor evening. Sera had decided she found it acceptable.
“Goodnight,” Sera said.
“Goodnight,” Sumi said, with the warmth of someone who meant considerably more than the word.
Sera got ready for bed and lay in the dark and listened to the dormitory settle into its nighttime sounds. She thought about seventeen evenings alone in the north garden and one evening with someone beside her and the specific quality of that eight centimeters that had opened up between them without either of them announcing it.
She thought about sound_095: the high fundamental cricket, its individual frequency pattern, the song it made because it was the thing it was in the place it was.
She thought: I’ve been tracking sounds for so long I started tracking this too without realizing it.
She thought: that’s alright.
She thought: four days.
Tuesday morning was a desk day by plan — she had the remaining five sounds mapped to specific windows and Tuesday’s morning was not one of them. She used the time to update the archive metadata, review the exhibition display specs, and begin the practical process of confirming the installation setup with Kuroda.
Kuroda had been her advisor for three years and had the specific quality of advisors who trusted their students completely and made that trust visible through the absence of interference. He had known about the hearing loss since the beginning of second year, which she had told him because she had needed him to understand the project’s urgency and could not explain the urgency without explaining the cause. He had nodded, asked two technical questions about the methodology, and never raised it again except in the context of practical accommodation.
This was, in Sera’s experience, one of the better responses available to someone receiving that information. She had told three people in her life. Two of the three had been good about it. One had not. Riku, she thought, had been— she was running out of words for what Riku had been, because the available words were all about the response and his response had been to simply adjust and not make it about the information, which was not a category most people knew how to occupy.
She reviewed the exhibition notes one more time.
*Spring always ends. But it always came. And this is what it sounded like.*
She had not cut the last line. She was not going to cut the last line.
Kuroda had read it and sent back: *This is what the documentation was always for. Good work, Sera. All hundred.*
He knew she didn’t have all hundred yet. He was stating the expectation as a given, which was a kind of confidence she did not take for granted.
She would get all hundred.
Five remaining. Four days. She would get them.
That evening Riku sent her a field recording.
No message with it. Just an audio file, thirty-two seconds, labeled with the date and time: Monday, 21:14.
She put in her earphones and played it.
The north campus path. The 60-hertz buzz of the path lights. Stone under foot — someone walking, measured pace. The distant city. The specific quality of a campus evening in the third week of June.
He had been on the same path, approximately ten minutes after her.
She sat with her phone and listened to the thirty-two seconds of path audio. Not a significant recording technically — no distinct acoustic phenomenon, no exceptional event, just a path at night. But he had made it, which meant he had been paying attention in the same way she was paying attention, which meant the habit she had been developing all semester was not hers alone anymore.
She had given him something without intending to.
She wrote back: *Good path.* Then, after a moment: *I have the same one. I made mine at 21:04.*
He replied: *Different ten minutes. Same path.*
She looked at that.
Then she sent him her thirty-second recording.
He sent back, after a short pause: *Yours has a different lamp at the beginning. Higher pitch. I hadn't noticed that one.*
She checked. He was right. The lamp at the Building C end of the north path had a slightly higher operational frequency than the others — probably a different model, a replacement that hadn’t been spec-matched. She had not noticed it either, despite walking past it regularly.
She wrote: *I missed that one.*
He wrote: *You get all hundred. I get the lamp.*
She set her phone down and looked at the ceiling and let herself feel whatever it was she was feeling, which was not a thing she always allowed.
It felt like being known.
Not known about. Not observed from the outside and documented. Known: from inside, from shared context, from two people paying attention to the same things at the same time from slightly different angles and comparing what they found.
Two recorders, the same path, ten minutes apart.
She thought about the harbor bell and his recording of it that was not as good as hers but was his. She thought about the field recorder he had bought in week eight and the sounds he had been collecting: workshop pre-shift, night campus, loading dock at dusk, ornamental pond before anything happened to it.
His own archive, parallel to hers.
This was, she thought, the property she had been circling without finding language for: when two things were in the right proximity, properties emerged that could not exist in either thing alone. The Glass Cafeteria’s thirty-millisecond reflection. The pump room’s forty-hertz presence. The harbor bell on a northwest wind.
The thing between them, which had no name yet but which had a frequency she could feel clearly.
Four days.
Wednesday morning she went back to the north garden alone.
Not for the cricket — the cricket had been captured, sound_095 was in the archive, that window was closed. She went because she had seventeen evenings of memory there and wanted one morning of it before the project ended.
The garden in the morning was completely different from the garden at post-sunset. The insects that were active at night were quiet now. The morning birds were in the trees around the garden, doing their morning activity, and the ornamental grass that housed the cricket was simply ornamental grass in the sunlight, no different from ornamental grass anywhere.
She sat on the bench near the northeast corner and did not press record.
She just sat.
The morning moved around her: the birds, the campus, the early students on their way to eight o’clock lectures. From here she could see the path they had walked last night, now busy with daylight traffic. The path lights were off in the daytime; she could not see which lamp was the one with the different frequency.
She thought: I have been in this garden eighteen times.
Seventeen alone. Once not alone.
The ratio would continue to shift, she thought, if she kept coming back. Which she intended to. Not every evening. Not with the systematic purpose of the project. But sometimes, in the evenings when the temperature was right and the campus had settled into its late-day register, she would come and sit in the north garden and listen to whatever was there.
Sometimes with the recorder. Sometimes not.
Sometimes alone.
Sometimes not.
She sat in the morning garden until the eight o’clock bells rang from the administration tower and then she stood and walked back to the archive room, and the morning was ordinary and specific and fully itself, and she was in it.
You've reached the end of this chapter
