Two weeks before October first.
She had been counting from the wrong direction: she had been tracking August as the start of the countdown rather than September as the end of it. This was a recording instinct applied to life — you didn't count down to the end of a take, you counted up from the beginning, you tracked how much you had rather than how much you were losing.
She started counting up in the second week of September.
They had seventeen days.
Seventeen was a number she knew. Seventeen evenings in the north garden alone.
She had been alone for seventeen and not alone for one and the one had been different from all seventeen combined. Seventeen days until October would be different from all the days before them.
She was going to be in all seventeen of them.
The fall was audible now.
The plane trees had begun their visible change in the third week of August: first a yellowing at the outermost leaves, then the specific color shift that moved inward as September advanced. The sound had changed with it: the leaves were different in the wind, the specific frequency response of a deciduous tree in the process of preparation, the campus ambient shifting register as the summer density yielded.
She had been documenting this daily in the seasons archive: the fall advancement, day by day, the campus becoming its autumn version.
The fall sections were already some of the best documentation she had made. Better than the spring, she thought, for a specific reason: she was not racing a deadline, not working toward a numbered list. She was simply in the season as it arrived, recording the changes as they came, the practice fully present without the project structure.
Kuroda had looked at the fall section when she brought it for the thesis review. He had not said anything immediately. He had read through the entries and listened to three samples. Then: *This is what the spring was building toward. The practice after the project.*
Yes, she had said.
Tuesday, first week of September: east gate, seven.
He was already there. He would always be already there.
But not for much longer.
She had been thinking about this specific thing for two weeks and had not resolved it into a single emotional register. It was still both: the residency being right and the going being real and the east gate being the east gate whether or not he was in it.
"I have something for you," he said.
She waited.
He took a small SD card from his pocket. Labeled, in his handwriting: *harbor bell, northwest wind, alternate position, the other recorder.*
She looked at it.
"The night of sound_094," he said. "My version. It's not as good as yours technically. Different angle, less optimal. But it's mine and it was from the same evening and—" He paused. "I wanted you to have it. For the seasons archive or just for you."
She took the SD card.
It was small in her hand. She thought about the harbor evening and the northwest wind and the bell ringing three times and his recording made from a different angle of the same moment.
Two versions of the evening she had said yes.
Both real.
"Thank you," she said.
"I've been meaning to give it to you since June," he said. "The timing wasn't right."
"It's right now," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She put the SD card in the front pocket of her bag, where she put things she needed to have with her.
They went through the east gate.
The fall campus was beautiful in its specific September way: the color arriving, the morning light at a lower angle, the shadows longer than they had been in August. The acoustic was different from the summer acoustic she had been documenting: the plane trees contributing, the campus in its return to full population, the summer quiet replaced by fall activity.
She documented as they walked.
The covered walkway: the ceramic tiles in September morning, different from the summer version, the foot traffic increasing with returning students. The north garden: the crickets in their September configuration, the individual she had tracked in the spring possibly still there, possibly not, the high fundamental frequency present or something very like it. The main quad: the fall version, the campus calendar starting over with the new academic year.
All of it in the seasons archive. All of it building the documentation she had committed to for twelve months.
"I want to read the full seasons archive before I go," he said. "What you have so far."
"I'll print it," she said. "The notebook pages. What you can read is what I have."
"The full record so far."
"Summer through the first two weeks of fall," she said. "Fifty-eight entries. Plus the spring archive as baseline."
"Fifty-eight entries," he said. "In six weeks."
"The practice has been running," she said.
At the ornamental pond she stopped.
The pond in September was beautiful: the water plants beginning their fall senescence, the fountain still running, the 40-hertz frequency still present in the stone ledge. She had this pond in summer, spring, and now early fall. Winter was coming. The pond would sound different frozen, if it froze, which it sometimes did in January.
She pressed record: five minutes of the pond in September morning, the fall acoustic beginning, the campus year turning over.
He sat on the ledge and did not record. He watched her record and she was aware of him watching, in the way she was now always aware of his watching, which was different from the early spring when she had been tracking the watching as a phenomenon. Now the watching was simply there, and she received it, and it was one of the specific things she was going to miss.
"I've been thinking about what to say," she said, when she had pressed stop. "For when you go. The goodbye at the station. I've been trying to work out what I'll say."
"You don't have to prepare it," he said.
"I know," she said. "I prepare anyway. That's how I work."
"What have you prepared?" he said, with warmth.
She looked at the pond.
"That the room is going to be extraordinary," she said. "And that February first is a specific date and I have it on record in the seasons archive notebook. And that the east gate will still be the east gate in February and I'll be on the campus side of it when you come back through."
His expression.
"And—" She paused. She had been working toward this specific sentence for weeks and it was here now, fully formed, ready. "And that this was the most specific spring I have ever inhabited, and you are the reason the second half of it was what it was, and I am glad of every one of the hundred sounds and every session and every harbor and every east gate morning."
He was very still.
"That's what you prepared," he said.
"That's what I prepared," she confirmed.
"That's—" He stopped. He started again. "That's the most specific thing anyone has ever said to me."
"I know how to be specific," she said.
"You do," he said. "You're the most specific person I've ever known."
The pond was between them and the September campus was around them and she had said the thing she had been preparing and it had arrived where it was supposed to arrive and the sound was in the air and she did not have the recorder pointed at it and that was alright.
Some things were for the body's memory and not the archive.
Some things you just had.
He said the thing he needed to say, which she received with all of herself, and the pond was there, and the campus was there, and the fall was arriving, and October was coming, and February was after October, and the east gate would still be the east gate.
*Spring always ends. But it always came.*
The new one would come too.
She was ready for it.
The final walk.
She had not called it that in her head until they were at the Glass Cafeteria and she realized they had been tracing the spring archive locations in sequence, moving through the campus in the order she had documented it.
Not planned. Just: the practice leading them through the map of what had happened.
The Glass Cafeteria: the south wall doing its 30-millisecond thing with the September lunch crowd. She had her spring version and her summer version and now the fall version beginning. She would have all four by the time the seasons archive was complete.
The covered walkway: the ceramic tiles in fall, different from rain-season, different from summer, the specific quality of the walkway in September morning foot traffic. She ran two takes.
The north garden: the September version of the space she had come to seventeen times alone. The crickets, different now, the summer individuals transitioning into the fall generation. She stood at the bench for a moment.
"Seventeen evenings," she said.
"And one," he said.
"And all the others since," she said. "It became a different count."
"What is the count now?"
She thought about it. All the evenings she had come to the north garden since the cricket session: the fall documentation sessions, the occasional solo walks, the sessions with him. She had not been keeping track the way she had kept track of the seventeen.
"Many," she said. "I stopped counting when it stopped being a record of absence."
He was quiet.
"That's a good thing," he said.
"Yes," she said.
The Blue Stairway.
They went there without deciding to, the route simply arriving at it the way routes arrived at things when you had been moving through a known landscape.
She went up first.
This was new: she had always followed him up the Blue Stairway or gone alone. Today she went first and he came behind her and the stairway resonated with both sets of footsteps, hers and his, the stone recording the double passage the way it recorded everything that moved through it.
On the terrace she looked at the campus below.
The fall campus: the color beginning in the plane trees, the longer shadows, the September morning quality that was different from every other morning quality and which she had now documented enough to know by feel.
Below: the Glass Cafeteria, the covered walkway, the main quad, the ornamental pond visible at the south end. The archive mapped onto the campus geography, fifty-eight seasons archive entries and one hundred spring sounds distributed across the landscape she was looking at.
He came to stand beside her.
"All of it," he said.
"All of it," she said.
She raised the recorder. Not for the archive specifically — for the seasons archive, yes, but also for the private archive, the record she kept of her own experience rather than the campus's.
She pressed record: the rooftop terrace in September, two weeks before October, the campus below, the fall arriving, both of them there.
Thirty seconds.
The most recent private archive entry.
She pressed stop and wrote in the seasons archive notebook: *September, pre-October. Rooftop terrace. The campus in the beginning of fall, visible from above. All the archive locations below. Beginning of what comes after the spring.*
She labeled the take and put the recorder in her bag.
"Come back in February," she said.
"February first," he said.
"Blue Stairway," she said. "That's the first place we go. Not a session. Just the stairway."
"Blue Stairway," he confirmed. "February first."
They stood on the terrace in the September morning with the campus below them and the fall arriving and October two weeks away and February at the end of the other side of it.
The arc was not closed. It was mid-take, the recording still running, the thing not finished.
This was alright.
She had learned to stay in the take.
The last evening before his departure she stayed late at the archive room.
This had become a habit she acknowledged: when she needed to think through something, the archive room was where she went. The forty years of recordings were good company for thinking. The room knew how to hold things without requiring them to be finished.
She wrote in the smaller notebook.
She wrote about the spring, which she had documented a hundred ways and which still had things in it that the notebooks could not fully hold: the specific quality of light in the pump room that day in week five, the sound of the harbor bell moving through the air above the water, the way the dawn chorus had begun while she stood on the rooftop with two thermoses and the city below and someone beside her who had set two alarms.
She wrote about the summer: the east gate mornings, the harbor walks, the lake and the forty-four minutes, the Blue Stairway and all its versions, the private archive growing in its folder. The thing that had been building since week two, patiently, without a deadline, arriving when it was ready.
She wrote about tomorrow: the station, the departure, the train heading four hundred kilometers south, the design school's fabrication bay waiting, the room that would exist by December.
And she wrote about February.
Not as consolation. Not as the thing she was getting through October and November and January for. As the thing that was coming, real, already in the future the way a recording was already in the archive before you listened to it back.
Fe bruary first. Blue Stairway. He would come back through the east gate and she would be there and the campus would be doing whatever the campus did in February.
She had never documented the campus in February.
She was going to.
She closed the smaller notebook and looked at the archive room one last time for a while: the shelves, the table, the two chairs, the east window dark at this hour.
Then she turned off the light and went out.
The night campus was full of its sounds. She walked through it with the recorder in her bag and without pressing record and received it all: the trees, the paths, the distant city, the specific quality of a campus at night in mid-September with the fall fully arrived and the academic year turning over.
She was here.
Fully.
Always be here.
Yes.
The morning of his departure she was at the east gate at six forty-five.
Not for a session. There was no session. He had an eight o'clock train and was leaving from the station near the south gate, not the east gate, and she had no practical reason to be at the east gate at six forty-five.
She was there anyway.
The east gate in early morning, late September: the campus in its daily preparation, the fall acoustic fully established now, the leaves on the plane trees past the peak of their color change. She stood at the gate and listened.
This was the gate. The gate she had been meeting him at since July. The gate that had been in the archive since week one as an approach rather than a location. The gate that was now, for her, a specific place rather than a transition.
She pressed record.
Five minutes of the east gate at six forty-five in late September: the academic year in full session, the morning rush beginning, the specific acoustic of a campus beginning its day.
This was the seasons archive fall entry for today. And also the private archive entry for today. Both things in the same take.
She had learned that was alright: the public and the private in the same recording, the same moment documented for different purposes. The practice and the life were not separate. They were the same practice.
He arrived at six fifty-nine.
He had his bag and his field recorder and he came through the east gate from the outside rather than through it from the campus side, which was a thing she registered: he had come to the gate on his way out rather than in.
She turned off the recorder.
They walked to the south gate together. Not fast. The station was a twelve-minute walk and he had until eight.
They walked the campus in the September morning: the covered walkway, the main quad, the south path toward the south gate. She had these routes in the archive from every season and direction. She was not recording now.
At the south gate she said what she had prepared.
She said: *The room is going to be extraordinary.* She said: *February first is in the seasons archive.* She said: *The east gate will be the east gate when you come back through it.*
And she said: *This was the most specific spring I have ever inhabited, and you are the reason the second half of it was what it was, and I am glad of every one of the hundred sounds and every session and every harbor and every east gate morning.*
He received it. Completely. Without deflecting, without qualifying.
And he said the thing he had prepared, which she received in the same way, and which she did not transcribe in any notebook because it was for the body's memory and not the archive.
Some things you just had.
She had this.
He went through the south gate.
She stood at the south gate and watched the direction he had gone until there was nothing left to watch. Then she turned and walked back into the campus.
The campus in late September morning: full of its own life, the academic year running, the fall acoustic in its established state. She had fifty-eight seasons archive entries and more coming. She had the winter ahead and the thesis defense and the parallel archive from the other city and February at the end of it.
She pressed record.
Three minutes of the campus in late September, the south gate, the morning after the going.
This was the next entry in the seasons archive. The first fall entry made alone.
She wrote: *September, late. South gate. The fall is here. October is here. He is in the other city beginning the room. I am here beginning the winter section. The seasons archive continues.*
*The practice continues.*
*I am here.*
*Fully.*
