The letter came with the first post, as Élodie's letters almost always did.
Vera was at the kitchen table with her tea when it arrived — she had been there for twenty minutes, having woken early and found herself unable to return to sleep, which was unusual for her. She had been awake in the particular way of someone whose mind was working on something below the level of conscious thought, processing something that had not yet surfaced into language.
She read Élodie's letter.
She read it carefully, the way she read all of Élodie's letters — with full attention, noting the spaces as much as the words, the places where the writing had been quick and the places where it had slowed. The letter was not long. It described the message from the captain in three sentences — incident, fine, managing — and then it said: I wanted you to know because I want someone to know. Not because I am panicking. Because this is the kind of thing that is easier to carry when someone else knows you are carrying it.
She put the letter down.
She sat with the specific quality of the information.
She thought: an incident. She thought about what incident meant in the vocabulary of a working boat, in the vocabulary of a captain who was precise about language. She thought about what managing the situation implied — that there had been a situation, that it was ongoing in some form even after the initial event, that the work of bringing it to resolution was continuing.
She thought about the man. The one the captain had described as having a grievance that was not legitimate. The one who had required intervention twice before the boat had left the trấn.
She thought: something happened between Søren and that man and the captain intervened and now the captain is managing the situation.
She thought: he is fine.
She thought: he has a plan. He said he had a plan. A reasonable one.
She sat at the kitchen table and held these two thoughts simultaneously — he has a plan and he is fine and something happened that required a captain's intervention — and felt the specific weight of not knowing the third piece, the piece that filled the space between the first two things and the situation, which was: what happened, exactly.
She picked up her pen.
She wrote: I read the letter. I am also thinking about the incident and the not knowing. She paused. She wrote: I think he is fine. I believe the captain. I also believe you believe the captain, which means we are both holding the same thing from the same direction, which is some comfort. She stopped. She wrote: we carry it together. That is what this is — carrying it together. Tell me when you hear more. I will tell you if I hear anything from here.
She looked at what she had written.
She added: the tờ nhạc is in the drawer. He said he would come back with it finished. He is a person who means what he says. These are the facts we have and they are good facts.
She sealed the letter.
She put on her coat.
She needed to move. She had found, over the autumn, that certain kinds of thought required walking — the kind that involved holding something you could not yet put down but that did not yet have a form you could work with. Walking gave the thought somewhere to go while it was finding its form.
She went out.
The morning was cold and very clear, the kind of winter morning that was almost painfully itself — the sky a hard bright blue, the frost on the cobblestones making the familiar road slightly luminous, the air carrying the particular quality of cold that had committed itself. She walked without a specific destination, which was also unusual for her. She was not a person who wandered. She walked toward destinations.
She found she was walking toward the pharmacy.
She turned the corner onto the side street and looked up at the clinic window.
The lamp was on.
She stood on the side street and looked at the clinic window with the lamp on in the winter morning, and felt the specific quality of comfort that came not from the absence of a difficult thing but from the presence of a person who was also carrying it. Élodie was up there. She was working. She was doing what she always did — the full attention, the complete presence, the practice of medicine in the room above the pharmacy in the trấn she had come back to.
Vera did not go in. Élodie was working. The lamp being on was enough — it was the signal that said I am here, in the same way the grandmother's raised hand from the window was a signal, in the same way the tờ nhạc in the drawer was a signal. The signals were not the things themselves. They were the evidence that the things were real.
She turned away from the pharmacy and continued walking.
She walked through the market square, which was quiet at this hour — the stalls not yet fully set up, the early vendors just arriving. She walked past the post office, past the school with the birch trees. She walked the way she had been walking through this trấn since she could walk — the routes she had used since childhood, the routes that were so familiar they had become a kind of extension of her own body, a geography she carried inside her.
She found herself on the road that ran toward bà Aldemar's house.
She had not decided to go there. She was going there.
Bà Aldemar was in the garden when Vera arrived — she could see her through the front gate, moving carefully among the beds with the economy of someone who had been gardening in this particular garden for decades and knew exactly where to put her feet and how much effort each task required. She was doing the late autumn work of clearing — the things that needed to be done before the real cold arrived, the tidying that was also a kind of preparation.
Vera opened the gate.
Bà Aldemar looked up.
She did not ask what Vera was doing there or why she had come. She looked at Vera with the specific quality of attention that was bà Aldemar's most characteristic quality — complete, unhurried, taking in more than the surface — and then she nodded.
Come in, she said. I am almost done here.
Vera stood in the garden and watched her finish the last of what she was doing — a small, careful task, the removal of dead plant material from one of the beds, done with the deliberateness of someone for whom this work had meaning beyond its practical function. When she was done she put her tools away in the small shed at the back and came to where Vera was standing.
They went inside.
The kitchen was warm — the stove had been going since morning, the particular warmth of a room that had been heated slowly over hours rather than quickly from cold. It smelled of the kitchen the way bà Aldemar's kitchen always smelled: the specific combination of the old wood of the furniture and the herbs she kept and the faint overlay of whatever she had been cooking for breakfast.
Vera sat in the smaller chair — her chair, she had come to think of it, the one near the door that she had been sitting in since she was a child visiting with her mother.
Bà Aldemar made tea.
She did not ask Vera what had brought her there. This was one of the things Vera had always valued about her — she did not require the statement of need before providing the space in which need could be addressed. She simply made the tea and brought it and sat down.
They sat.
After a while, bà Aldemar said: you received news.
Vera said: Élodie received news. She told me.
Bà Aldemar looked at her cup.
Vera said: there was a small incident. He is fine. The captain says he is managing the situation.
Bà Aldemar was quiet for a moment. Then she said: yes.
Just yes. Vera looked at her.
Bà Aldemar said: I had a feeling about last week. She said it without drama, the way she stated most things. A heaviness. I have known my son — She stopped. She said: I have known Søren all his life. I have learned to recognize the feeling when something has happened to him, even at a distance.
She said it with the calm of someone who has lived a long time and has learned to trust the specific information that long acquaintance provides.
She said: he is fine. I know this also.
Vera said: you know because of the feeling?
Bà Aldemar said: I know because of Søren. She looked up. He has been in difficult situations before. He knows how to be in them. She paused. When he was twelve, his stepfather — She stopped. There were years when this boy had to manage things no child should have to manage. And he managed them. Not by being hard. By being clear about what was necessary and doing it.
Vera heard this. She filed it alongside the other things she knew about him — the not wanting things that could be taken away, the learning not to be a burden, the portability. All of it fitting together now into a more complete picture.
She said: Élodie told him he didn't know how to let people worry about him. He said he would try.
Bà Aldemar looked at her. She said: she told you this?
Vera said: yes.
Bà Aldemar was quiet for a moment. She said: that is important. For him. That someone named it.
She said it with the quality of someone assessing something that mattered and finding it sufficient.
She looked at Vera.
She said: you are worried about him.
Vera said: yes.
Bà Aldemar said: good.
Vera looked at her.
Bà Aldemar said: I mean that. It is good that you are worried. It means you care about what happens to him. Not as a thing in your life — as a person. She paused. There is a difference.
Vera thought about this. She thought about the years of careful observing, of cataloguing and filing and not allowing herself to have the feeling fully. She thought about the letter to him — here, as myself. She thought about the conversation in her kitchen and you are the person I trust most here. She thought about what she was feeling now, sitting in bà Aldemar's kitchen with the news from the river, and what it was.
She said: bà, I have a question.
Bà Aldemar said: yes.
She said: do you think he will stay? After he comes back?
Bà Aldemar looked at her for a long moment. The look of someone who was assessing the question, deciding how to answer it.
She said: con hỏi câu sai rồi.
You are asking the wrong question.
Vera waited.
Bà Aldemar said: the right question is not whether he will stay. The right question is whether he wants to. She paused. And I think you already know the answer to that question.
Vera sat with this.
She thought about I will come back and the hand on the shoulder at the dock and the tờ nhạc and keep this for me and the smile — the real one, the one Élodie had described, the one that had no management in it. She thought about this is the first time I have wanted to find out.
She did know the answer to the question bà Aldemar had named.
She had known it for a while. She had been not fully allowing herself to know it, the way she had not fully allowed herself to know other things — because knowing something fully when the person in question was somewhere on a river and you could not confirm it was a kind of exposure that required a particular courage.
She thought: I know the answer.
She thought: and the answer means I care about what happens to him in the way bà Aldemar described — not as a thing in my life, as a person. Which means the worrying I am doing is the right kind of worrying. The kind that is connected to someone real.
She looked at bà Aldemar.
She said: yes. I know.
Bà Aldemar nodded. She said nothing else about it.
They finished their tea.
When Vera rose to go, bà Aldemar walked her to the door. In the doorway she paused and looked at Vera with the clear-eyed attention she had always used, the teacher's attention, the attention of someone who has watched a great many people arrive at things and knows the quality of the arrival.
She said: Vera. You have done good work this winter.
Not as a compliment. As a statement of fact, the way she stated most things.
Vera said: I had help.
Bà Aldemar said: you did the work.
She said: con đã làm những thứ khó. Con sẽ tiếp tục làm được.
You have done difficult things. You will continue to be able to.
It was the second time she had said this to Vera — the first had been the day of the Stanford letter. It had the same quality as the first time: not encouragement toward something uncertain, confirmation of something already demonstrated.
Vera said: cảm ơn bà.
She went out.
She walked back through the trấn. She took the longer route — the one that went along the river road, that passed the dock. The dock was quiet in the morning, no boats in the mooring, only the river.
She stopped at the railing and looked at the water.
The river was grey and cold in the winter morning, moving with its characteristic unhurried constancy, the surface not turbulent but alive with the small motions of water that was going somewhere. She stood and watched it.
She thought: somewhere on this river. He is somewhere on this river.
She thought about the day the boat had left — about Élodie standing on the dock, watching until the bend closed over it. She had not been at the dock that morning. She had been at home, writing, letting Élodie have the morning at the dock without the complication of her presence.
She was here now.
She stood at the railing and let herself look at the river and think about the person somewhere on it — not with anxiety, not with the managed distance she had been maintaining, with the full and acknowledged quality of caring about what happened to him. Both things true: the plan and the worrying. The certainty and the not knowing.
She had been learning all autumn to hold things simultaneously.
This was the hardest version of it.
She was doing it.
She stood at the dock for a while in the cold morning and then she turned and walked home.
She thought about the shift she felt — that the crisis was beginning, somewhere underneath everything, to loosen. Not because anything had been resolved. Because she had found the place to stand inside the uncertainty that was not waiting. That was being here.
She walked home through the cold and the clear morning and thought about the tờ nhạc and the empty measures and the river and the word want and all the things that were going to find their form in their own time.
She was going to be here for all of it.
She opened the front door.
Her mother was in the kitchen. The smell of the morning meal. The particular warmth of a house that had been inhabited and cared for.
She went in.
She sat at her desk.
She had work to do — the supplementary essays were done, which meant the Stanford application was complete, which meant that particular work was finished. What she had now was the work of waiting for responses, which was different from the work of preparing. And alongside that, the other work: the Koval folder, which she was updating with Lucien's additional material. The timeline. The documentation.
She had received a letter from Lucien two days after he had left — from the city, not the university, which meant he had gone to the city first on some other errand. The letter was short and precise, as his communications tended to be. He had arrived back safely. He had found one additional piece of documentation in the city archive that was relevant. He would send it when he had copied it properly. He had also, in a postscript that was slightly unlike the tone of the rest of the letter, noted that the café on the south side of the market square made very good coffee.
She had read the postscript twice.
She had written back: the archive material will be very useful. I will add it to the folder when it arrives. She had paused for a long time after that. Then she had written: the café is good. The table in the back has better light. She had stopped. She had added: I hope the city archive has what you need.
She had sent it before she reconsidered.
She had not heard back yet. It had only been a few days.
She thought about the postscript. She thought about the deliberate quality of including an observation about coffee in an otherwise factual letter. She thought about someone who had spent a day looking at land records and historical documents and had, at the end of the letter, noted the quality of the coffee.
She thought: that is not nothing.
She thought: I said I would give things time. I meant it.
She picked up her pen and opened the Koval folder and began updating the timeline.
She worked for two hours. The work was good work — specific and detailed and building toward something that was going to be useful, to her family and to Lucien's research and eventually to the other families in the region who had been carrying the same kind of weight.
She thought about those families. The ones she didn't know. The ones Lucien had found in the archives. She thought about what it would mean to reach them — not now, not this winter, but eventually. When she had the legal training to do it properly. When she had the language and the tools to say: what you have been told is not the legal reality, and here is the documentation, and here is what you can do.
She thought: this is the work.
Not abstractly. Specifically. This.
She closed the folder.
She sat at the desk in the quiet of the winter afternoon and thought about the river and about Søren somewhere on it and about Élodie in the clinic with the tờ nhạc in the drawer and about Lucien in the city archive and about bà Aldemar in her garden and about the weight that had been set down and all the things that were in motion.
She thought: we are all doing what we need to do. Each of us in our own place, doing the specific work of the life we are living.
She wrote to Élodie.
She wrote: I spent this morning at bà Aldemar's. She said I was asking the wrong question. The right question is not whether he will stay, but whether he wants to. She paused. I know the answer. I have known it for a while. I just allowed myself to know it fully today, standing at the dock, looking at the river.
She stopped.
She wrote: we are going to be all right, Élodie. All of us. I believe this. Not as comfort — as an assessment based on everything I know about the people involved.
She looked at that.
She wrote: you are a person who does things because they need to be done. He is a person who means what he says. I am a person who has learned, this winter, to stop managing and start living. She paused. We are going to be all right.
She sealed the letter.
She put it on the corner of the desk.
She stood at the window for a moment and looked at the winter afternoon — the pale light, the cold, the trấn going about its business in the way it always went about its business, without requiring anything from the people in it except that they keep being in it.
She was in it.
She was going to keep being in it.
She picked up the next page of the Koval timeline.
She had work to do.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The letter came with the first post, as Élodie's letters almost always did.
Vera was at the kitchen table with her tea when it arrived — she had been there for twenty minutes, having woken early and found herself unable to return to sleep, which was unusual for her.
