March had arrived with an unusual quality of warmth.
Not warm in the way of summer — warm in the way of a season that had decided to be itself ahead of schedule, to arrive before the expected date with a gentleness that felt like consideration. The frost was still on the cobblestones in the mornings, but it was thin now, the kind that burned off by eight instead of persisting until noon. The light had changed — longer and more direct, finding angles in the trấn that winter had covered with its lower, oblique movement across the sky.
Her grandmother noticed it first. She had been in the garden before breakfast two days in a row, something she did not do in winter, standing in the early morning with her coat and her good attention and a quality of pleasure that was its own argument for the season. She said: the apple tree is thinking about it.
Élodie had looked. There was nothing visible yet — no bud, no green. But her grandmother was eighty and had been watching this tree for decades, and if she said it was thinking about it, it probably was.
The clinic was doing what clinics did in spring: picking up. Not dramatically — the transition from winter was gradual, a matter of rhythm rather than event. But new patients were appearing, people who had been putting off coming through the cold months and were now arriving with the seasonal energy of something that had been waiting and was finally moving. She had added a morning appointment on Tuesdays. She was thinking about adding one on Thursdays as well.
She was writing up the notes from the morning's last patient when Vera's letter arrived.
She heard the slot in the downstairs door and then the pharmacist's assistant calling up the stairs — he had taken to letting her know when something arrived, a small courtesy she had not asked for and had come to appreciate. She went down and collected the letter and took it upstairs and opened it at the desk.
She read it.
She read it again.
She set it down and looked at the window.
Full scholarship. Not the partial she had been awarded initially — a full scholarship. The specific language of the letter Vera had quoted was formal and precise, the language of institutions, but underneath the formality was something that was not formal at all: the recognition, by people who did not know Vera personally but had read what she had written, that what she had was worth investing in completely.
Élodie thought about thirty-one revisions of a personal statement. She thought about the sentence: The law is not only an instrument of resolution but of revelation. She thought about a woman in a library in a small town in winter, pulling land registry documents from thirty years ago and finding that what had been presented as permanent was in fact contingent, that the weight could be set down.
She thought: she earned this. In every possible sense.
She wrote back immediately — not a long letter, the situation did not require length. She wrote: Vera. I am sitting at my desk and I have just read the letter three times. Full scholarship. I want you to know that I am not surprised. I am also entirely unsurprised by how much I am feeling right now — this is the most correct news I have received in years. She stopped. She wrote: go be happy. Tell your parents. Let your mother make the soup. I will be here when you come back to tell me about it in person.
She sealed the letter. She put it in her bag to take on the way home.
She was at the window then — not looking for anything specific, simply looking — when she heard footsteps coming from the direction of the market square. The particular sound of two people walking together, different rhythms. She watched as a woman and a child passed below, the woman carrying a bag from the market, the child stopping every few steps to examine something on the cobblestones, which children did.
She watched them pass.
She thought about the clinic. About the woman with the arthritic hands who had come back four times now and whose condition was being managed rather than worsening, which was the best realistic outcome and which the woman had accepted with the pragmatism of someone who had been told the truth and preferred it to comfortable fiction. About Mr. Benedek, whose knee was better and who now came in for reasons that had less to do with the knee and more to do with the fact that the clinic had become a place he could discuss the grain of the wood he was working with. About the baker's wife's twins, who were growing and healthy and who she would know for years.
She thought: I have built something here.
Not just the clinic. The specific, accumulated thing that came from being in a place and being of it — the network of relationships, the knowledge of specific lives, the particular quality of being known and knowing. She had come back to build this and she had been building it, one appointment at a time, one patient at a time.
She was going to keep building it.
She was still at the window when she heard her name from the market square — a voice she recognized, calling up without ceremony.
She looked down. Bà Aldemar was below, carrying a small basket, looking up at the window with the expression of someone who had noticed the window was occupied and was simply making contact.
Come down a minute, bà Aldemar called.
She went down.
They walked together — the older woman's measured pace, the particular quality of bà Aldemar's movement that was not slow exactly but was deliberate, each step placed with the care of someone who had been moving through this trấn for seven decades and knew exactly where she was putting her feet.
They talked about the spring. About the apple tree. About the quality of the morning light and what it did to the market square at eight o'clock, when the shadows were long and gold. Bà Aldemar had opinions about the seasonal produce that had just appeared at the vegetable stall — she always had opinions about seasonal produce, the specific and informed opinions of someone who had been cooking from what was available for her entire adult life.
Élodie listened and contributed when she had something to contribute and was otherwise present in the way she had learned to be present in the conversations that did not require direction.
They were at the corner where their paths would diverge when bà Aldemar paused.
She looked at Élodie.
She said: next week or the week after. I think.
She said it the way she said things that were statements of fact derived from long knowledge — not as predictions, as informed estimates. The estimate of someone who understood the route and the season and the particular patterns of the boat and the captain.
Élodie said: you heard something?
Bà Aldemar said: I have heard nothing. I simply know the route and the timing. She paused. And I have had the feeling of something approaching for the past week. She said it without drama. I have learned to trust this feeling.
Élodie looked at her.
Bà Aldemar looked back with the clear-eyed quality that was one of the most characteristic things about her — the look that did not soften things but also did not make them harder than they were.
She said: are you ready?
Élodie thought about the question. She held it for a moment.
She said: I don't know what that means.
Bà Aldemar said: yes you do.
She turned and went her way, the basket in her hand, her measured steps on the cobblestones.
Élodie stood at the corner.
She thought: next week or the week after. She thought about what that meant — what was on the other side of next week or the week after. She had been living for months in the condition of his being away, which was a specific condition with its own particular qualities: the tờ nhạc in the drawer, the absence at half past three, the letters to Vera, the mornings opening the clinic and the evenings walking home and the tea with her grandmother. This condition had its own texture and its own rhythm and she had learned it and been learning it and was, she thought, managing it with some degree of grace.
The end of this condition was approaching.
She thought: I don't know what comes next.
She thought: that is the truth of it. She knew he was coming back. She knew he had a piece of music that was going to be finished. She knew what had been said between them — the hand on the face, the hand on the shoulder at the dock, the tờ nhạc, I will come back. She knew all of this.
What she did not know was what it looked like, in practice, on the other side. He would come back to the trấn on a working boat that would need to be repaired again eventually and take another route. His life was the boat and the river and the music and the places he moved through. The trấn was one of those places — a specific place, with specific things in it now that it had not had before. But it was still a place on a route.
She thought: I will not know until I see him.
She thought: that is correct. Some things cannot be known in advance.
She went back to the clinic.
She sat at the desk.
She opened the top drawer.
The tờ nhạc was there — the piece of music that had been found in her presence and had been left here for safekeeping while it waited to be finished. The empty measures at the bottom of the page. She had been looking at this paper for months, developing a relationship with it that was also a relationship with him — an ongoing practice of keeping, of trusting that the thing held in trust would be returned.
She looked at the empty measures.
She thought: soon those will be filled.
She thought about what the finished piece would sound like — whether the ending would be major or minor, resolved or suspended, whether it would answer the questions the opening had asked or simply acknowledge them and move on. She had been building a private theory about this for months. She thought the ending would be quiet. She thought it would resolve — not dramatically, in the way that resolution happened when something had been working toward it for a long time and the working was done.
She closed the drawer.
She picked up her pen and wrote to Vera.
She wrote: bà Aldemar says next week or the week after. She paused. I am sitting with the tờ nhạc and I find that I do not know what comes next. Not in the anxious way — in the honest way. I know he is coming back. I don't know what coming back means beyond the boat arriving at the dock. She stopped. I think I have to wait to see him to know. I think that is the right answer even though it is not the comfortable one.
She stopped.
She wrote: I have been learning all autumn to hold things I can't resolve. I think this is the final version of that lesson.
She put the letter aside.
She opened the afternoon patient files.
She had three appointments. She was going to see all of them with the complete attention they deserved, because that was the kind of doctor she was and the kind of person she was and the kind of life she had chosen when she chose to come back to this trấn.
She was here.
She would see what came next when it came.
That evening she walked home through the spring-adjacent air, the light still in the sky later than it had been in January, the trấn with the particular quality of a place that is beginning to rouse itself from seasonal quiet. She delivered the letter to Vera's slot on the way. She walked the rest of the way home and let herself in through the garden gate, which her grandmother had left unlocked in the way she had apparently always left it unlocked, and stood for a moment in the garden.
The apple tree.
She looked at it in the early evening light — the bare branches, the precise, winter-thinned shape of it. Her grandmother had said it was thinking about it. She looked and still could not see what her grandmother had seen. But she trusted the observation.
Some things were perceptible to people who had been paying attention for long enough.
She went inside.
The kitchen was warm. Her grandmother was at the window. She raised her hand. Her grandmother raised hers.
They had dinner. They talked about the spring and the garden and the apple tree. Her grandmother told her about the summer the apple tree had produced more fruit than the two of them could use and they had made so much preserves that she had been giving jars to everyone she knew for three years afterward.
After her grandmother went to bed, Élodie sat in the kitchen for a while with the lamp on.
She thought about next week or the week after. She thought about the tờ nhạc. She thought about what bà Aldemar had said: are you ready?
She had said she did not know what that meant. She thought about it now, with the quiet of the house around her and the lamp and the garden outside.
She thought: I think ready means something specific. Ready means being here. Actually here. Not managing the arrival, not preparing for every contingency, not performing a particular version of herself that she thought was appropriate. Just being here, in this trấn, in this spring, as the person she had been becoming all autumn and winter.
She had been practicing that.
She was, she thought, as ready as she was going to be.
She turned off the lamp.
She went upstairs.
She lay in the dark.
She thought she heard something.
She lay very still and listened.
From the direction of the river — distant, possibly imagined, the kind of thing you could convince yourself you were hearing or not hearing depending on what you were attending to — there was something that might have been music. Accordion music. Very faint. The quality of something moving past on water, the sound changed by distance and current into something that was half sound and half imagination.
She lay still.
She listened.
She could not be certain.
She let herself not be certain. She lay in the dark and listened and did not decide whether she was hearing something or imagining it, because the deciding did not matter. What mattered was the listening itself — the quality of paying attention to the possibility, the willingness to be present for whatever was or was not there.
She listened until she was asleep.
She did not know when the listening became sleep. Only that morning came with the quality of a night that had contained something, even if she could not name what.
She was in the kitchen early, making tea, when she thought about what bà Aldemar had said.
Are you ready?
She had answered I don't know what that means and bà Aldemar had said yes you do and turned and walked away. She had been sitting with that exchange since yesterday afternoon, turning it over the way she turned over things that had more in them than the surface indicated.
She thought: what do I know? When I ask myself what ready means?
She thought about the months since October. The specific accumulation of them. The boat on the river that she had recognized by its sound before she recognized the person on it. The pharmacy and the stone step and the first conversation and the accordion through the floor and the fog and the kitchen and the clinic and the hand and the scar and the tờ nhạc and I will come back.
She thought about what she knew about him now. She knew how he moved through spaces and how he talked to his mother and how he talked to Vera and how he talked to her. She knew the quality of his attention when it was directed at something he cared about. She knew the sound of his footsteps on the old stairs. She knew that he had spent years learning not to want things that could be taken away and was learning, carefully and in increments, to stop doing that. She knew that he played what he knew now instead of what he thought people wanted to hear.
She thought: I know him.
Not completely — she would never know him completely, nobody knew anybody completely, and the not knowing was also part of what made it worth attending to. But she knew him in the specific, accumulated way that came from months of paying close attention.
She thought: and he knows me. In the same way.
She thought: that is what ready means. Not that I have everything figured out. That I know who I am in relation to who he is and I have been honest about it and he has been honest about it and when he comes back we will be two people who know something real about each other and have to decide what to do with that.
She thought: I can do that.
She was still thinking about it when the tea was ready and her grandmother appeared in the kitchen doorway with the specific morning quality of someone who had slept well and was content about it.
Good morning, her grandmother said.
Good morning, Élodie said.
She poured two cups.
They sat at the table in the early morning light — the spring light, the light that was different now — and her grandmother told her about a dream she had had about the summer the apple tree had produced all that fruit, which was apparently also a dream she had had before, the same dream returning as if the summer wanted to be visited again.
Élodie listened and thought: this is also what coming back means. This kitchen. This woman. This particular quality of a morning in a house that has been a home for a very long time.
She thought: I came back to all of it. Not just to him. To all of it.
She thought: and all of it is going to be here regardless of what happens when the boat arrives. The kitchen and the grandmother and the apple tree and the clinic and Vera two streets away. These are not contingent on anything. They are simply hers.
She finished her tea.
She put on her coat.
She went to the clinic.
She lit the stove. She opened the drawer. She looked at the tờ nhạc.
She closed the drawer.
She opened the first patient file.
She was ready.
