The weeks following the ruling settled into something the garrison hadn't experienced in longer than most of them could easily remember — an ordinary, uneventful rhythm, free of urgent letters and disguised threats and the particular exhausting vigilance that had defined the better part of a year.
Bren took up quiet residence near the garrison's modest infirmary, offering what herb-lore he still remembered from a life interrupted twelve years ago, and found, to his own visible surprise, that his hands hadn't forgotten the old skills even after a decade spent as evidence rather than a person. Tomas, barely past boyhood, apprenticed himself to Marek's quartermaster and threw himself into the work with the particular fierce gratitude of someone determined to prove his own continued existence worth the trouble it had taken to secure it. Corin, quieter than the others, kept mostly to herself for the first weeks, though Eric noted, with the careful attention of a physician tracking recovery, that she'd begun eating properly again, and sleeping through most nights without the restless waking that had marked her first days at the garrison. She'd taken, more recently, to sitting near the drill yard's edge during morning exercises, watching the soldiers train with an expression that had slowly shifted from wariness into something like cautious curiosity.
Dessin and Mira married in a small, unceremonious garrison gathering barely a month after the ruling, and Vane stood witness alongside Marek and Talwyn, watching the two of them exchange simple vows with a warmth that Eric felt as clearly through the bond as his own steady heartbeat.
*Look at them,* Eric said, quiet and fond, as Dessin lifted Mira briefly off her feet to the garrison's scattered, genuine applause. *Three years of fear, and they still found their way to this.*
"People generally do," Vane said, "if you give them half a chance and enough time to heal."
The small gathering lingered long after the vows themselves, garrison soldiers who'd fought alongside Dessin for years finally free to celebrate him openly rather than merely tolerate the quiet clerk none of them had properly known. Marek raised the first toast, gruff and genuine. "To a man who kept his letters plain and his courage plainer still, for three years longer than any of us realized he was carrying it."
"To Dessin," the gathered soldiers echoed, and Dessin, flushed and disbelieving at the open affection, ducked his head with the particular embarrassment of a man unused to being celebrated rather than simply tolerated.
Mira, watching him, leaned close enough that only Vane, standing nearest, caught her murmured words. "He still doesn't quite believe he deserves this. I intend to spend considerably more than one evening proving him wrong."
"You will," Vane said, certain. "Give it time. It took me the better part of a year to believe I deserved what Eric offered me, and I still catch myself doubting it some nights."
*Not anymore, though,* Eric said, quiet and warm, and Vane's mouth curved despite himself at the gentle correction.
"Not anymore," he agreed, aloud, and Mira's answering smile suggested she'd understood the exchange had carried more weight than the words alone conveyed.
---
It was nearly two months into this fragile peace that Talwyn first raised the concern that had, evidently, been troubling him for some time before he finally brought it to the council.
"I've had my correspondent in the capital continue watching Voss's movements, even after her suspension," he said, spreading a fresh sheet of notes across the map table with visible unease. "For the first month, she remained where expected — under a form of loose confinement pending her formal inquiry, precisely as the ruling implied. Three weeks ago, that changed. She's gone, Marshal. Vanished from her known residence, with no record of her whereabouts since."
The easy warmth of the past two months evaporated at once.
*That's not good,* Eric said, cold understanding cutting through the peace they'd all grown, perhaps too comfortably, accustomed to. *A woman under formal investigation doesn't simply vanish unless she has somewhere to go and considerable resources to get there unnoticed.*
Vane relayed it, jaw tightening. "The second site," he said. "The one you found reference to in her records, before the ruling."
"That's my fear as well," Talwyn admitted. "If she has a facility we never located, and resources we never accounted for, her formal suspension may have simply removed the last constraint keeping her from acting entirely outside any authority at all. A woman with nothing left to lose institutionally may prove considerably more dangerous than one still hoping to preserve her position. I would rather be wrong about this than right, Marshal, but I've learned not to trust my own optimism where she's concerned."
"Have your correspondent keep looking," Vane said, grim. "And quietly, Marek — I want the garrison's watch doubled, without alarming anyone unnecessarily. We've had two months of peace. I'd rather not assume it's permanent."
Talwyn gathered his notes with visible reluctance, the old scholar's earlier relief evidently souring into fresh unease. "I confess I'd allowed myself to hope this particular thread had finally been resolved, Marshal. I don't relish being the one to unravel that hope so soon after we'd all finally begun to relax into it."
"You did exactly what you should have," Vane said. "I'd rather have an uncomfortable warning now than a comfortable ignorance that costs us later."
"A generous way of framing it," Talwyn said, managing a tired, grateful half-smile despite the gravity of his report, "but I'll take the generosity regardless."
---
Freya found Vane at the edge of the drill yard that evening, Kael's shimmer dimmer than usual, subdued by whatever news had already reached her through the garrison's fast-moving grapevine. "Kael's been uneasy since Talwyn's report," she said, without preamble. "He says it feels like the quiet before the second rift went silent. Not proof of anything. Just a feeling he can't quite shake."
*Tell her I trust that feeling more than she might expect,* Eric said, quiet. *Bonded instinct has proven right more often than wrong, in my admittedly limited experience of it.*
Vane relayed it, and Freya's jaw tightened, old wariness returning to her posture after months of gradually easing. "Then we prepare again. I'd rather be wrong about danger than right about safety and unprepared regardless."
"Agreed," Vane said.
Kael's voice came through faintly then, quiet but steady, carrying a resolve that surprised even Freya beside him. *If she comes for either of us, I intend to make certain it costs her considerably more than she's prepared to pay. I spent the collapse and its aftermath feeling helpless while Freya suffered for a choice I made without her consent. I don't intend to feel that helpless again, whatever Voss brings against us.*
Vane relayed it, and something fierce and grateful passed across Freya's expression at hearing her bonded voice so resolute. "He means that," she said. "I've watched him grow considerably surer of himself these past months. I trust that resolve as much as I trust my own."
*Tell them both,* Eric said, warm despite the returning tension, *that resolve like that is exactly why I believe we'll meet whatever Voss attempts and come through it, the same as we did the depot.*
---
Marek's doubled watch went into effect within the day, and the garrison, sensing the shift in mood without needing the full explanation, settled back into the particular alert readiness that had defined most of the past year, the fragile two months of peace folding away like something too delicate to have expected it might last.
"I don't like reversing course this fast," Marek admitted to Vane privately, reviewing the revised patrol schedule with visible reluctance. "Morale had actually begun to recover. Soldiers were sleeping properly for the first time in a year. Now I'm asking them to go back to double shifts on nothing more than a scholar's correspondent losing track of one woman's whereabouts."
"I know," Vane said. "I don't like it either. But I'd rather ask them to endure inconvenience now than explain, afterward, why we failed to prepare for something Talwyn warned us about plainly."
Marek exhaled, some of his reluctance settling into grim acceptance. "Fair. I'll have the schedule finalized by evening. And Marshal — for what it's worth, I think the garrison would rather be asked to endure the inconvenience than left ignorant of the reason for it. Trust runs both directions, these days, more than it used to."
"That's largely your doing," Vane said. "You've built something here worth trusting, Marek, well beyond what any single commander could manage alone."
Marek's weathered face creased into something almost embarrassed at the praise, and he busied himself with the schedule rather than answer directly, though the set of his shoulders had eased, fractionally, at the sentiment.
---
That night, once the garrison had settled and the day's unease had folded itself into the deepening dark, Vane sat with Eric's quiet presence steady in his chest, turning over the fragile peace they'd built and the shadow now creeping back across its edges.
*Two months,* Eric said, quiet. *That's not nothing, whatever comes next. Dessin and Mira married. Bren found a place worth staying for. Tomas learned a trade. Whatever Voss does now, she can't take that away from any of them.*
"No," Vane agreed. "But she can try to take something else. Us. Freya and Kael. Whoever else she considers unfinished business."
*Then we face that too, exactly as we've faced everything else.* Eric let the certainty of it settle, unshaken despite the returning fear. *Together, and prepared, rather than caught unaware the way her thirty years of patience might otherwise allow her to manage.*
Vane's hand found his own chest, slow and steady, the old gesture carrying, tonight, the particular weight of a peace he'd allowed himself to trust perhaps a little too fully. "I let myself believe it was over," he admitted, quiet. "Just for a little while. I let myself believe we'd actually won."
*We did win something,* Eric said, gentle. *The ruling was real. The four we rescued are safe, married and settled and building lives that couldn't have existed a season ago. None of that gets undone by whatever Voss attempts next, whether we stop her or not. But I understand the fear of having let your guard down, only to need it raised again so soon.*
"I'm tired of raising it," Vane said, raw. "I want, just once, to stop bracing for the next threat before the last one's even properly finished."
*I know.* Eric let the warmth of the bond carry more comfort than words alone could manage, gentle and unhurried. *I want that for you too. I don't know if Voss intends to give either of us that particular rest yet. But whatever she attempts, we meet it with two months of genuine peace behind us, and the proof that we can actually win when we fight together properly. That has to count for something, even against thirty years of patience.*
Vane exhaled, long and slow, some of the raw edge softening beneath Eric's steady warmth. "Together, then. Whatever comes."
*Together,* Eric agreed, letting the word carry its full, familiar weight one more time before the night's fear could fully claim it, and let the moment settle a while longer before shifting the mood, deliberately, toward something gentler. *Let me have this one more night with you, before the watch fires and the doubled patrols and whatever Voss has planned next. Just this. Just us, for a little while longer.*
Vane's breath caught, want and grief tangled together in equal measure at the request. "You don't have to ask twice."
*I like asking,* Eric said, warm. *I like that you still get to choose it, every single time, rather than simply having it taken. That's not nothing, whatever else tonight's fear costs us.*
Vane reached up, slow, and pressed his palm flat against his own sternum, the old gesture carrying, tonight, both comfort and invitation at once, and Eric answered with the particular unhurried warmth he'd learned, over the months, to offer freely rather than sparingly — no urgency in it, no fear-driven need to seize a moment before danger arrived to claim it, only the quiet, deliberate tenderness of two people determined to hold onto softness even with a shadow creeping back across the edges of their peace.
"Tell me something good," Vane murmured, eyes closing, the warmth of the bond settling low and steady through his chest. "Not about Voss. Not about the fear. Something good."
*The orchard,* Eric said, immediate and certain. *The one we talked about, the night before the depot. I've been thinking about it more than I probably should, given everything else demanding my attention. What kind of trees, do you think? Something practical, or something simply because it's beautiful?*
"Both," Vane said, drowsy. "Apple, like the one from your old courtyard. And something flowering, just for the look of it in spring. No practical purpose required."
*I'd like that,* Eric said, soft. *An apple tree and something flowering, and a bench worn smooth from actual use rather than careful preservation. Something ordinary enough that we could simply sit under it and be tired together, instead of afraid together.*
"Someday," Vane agreed, the word carrying, tonight, the particular ache of a promise neither of them could fully guarantee, but chose, regardless, to keep making to each other anyway.
They stayed like that a long while, the lamp burning low, the fear of Voss's return folded gently beneath the warmth of an imagined orchard neither of them had yet earned the chance to plant, and Eric let himself, for just this one more quiet night, believe entirely in the someday they'd promised each other, whatever tomorrow's watch fires might still demand of them both.
---
Outside, the garrison's watch fires burned a little brighter than they had in months, doubled now against a threat none of them could yet name, but all of them, after a year of hard-won lessons, knew better than to underestimate.
---
The stranger was spotted three nights later, at the far edge of the garrison's northern perimeter, gone before any sentry could give proper chase — a single figure, cloaked against identification, who left behind nothing but a set of careful, deliberate footprints leading away into the dark, and a small, unsigned note pinned to a fence post facing directly toward the command tent, positioned with a precision that left little doubt the placement had been entirely deliberate.
Marek brought it to Vane himself, expression grim in the lamplight, having clearly read it once already and found no comfort in a second reading. "Found this an hour ago, pinned exactly where the sentry would see it at the start of his watch. I don't like what it says, Marshal, and I like even less how deliberately it was placed."
Vane unfolded it, and Eric read the single line alongside him, cold understanding settling through them both at once.
*You took four of mine. I intend to even the accounting.*
The tent went very still, the words settling over the assembled council with the particular weight of a threat that offered no timeline, no location, nothing to plan against but the certainty that it was coming.
"No signature," Marek said, low. "No indication of when, or how. Just enough to tell us she knows exactly where we are, and wants us to know she's watching. That's not the note of a woman planning to strike tomorrow. That's the note of a woman making certain we spend every night from now on waiting for a blow she hasn't decided to deliver yet."
*That's precisely the kind of message a woman with thirty years of patience would send,* Eric said, cold fury cutting through the fear. *Not a threat with a timeline attached. Just enough uncertainty to make every single night from now on feel like a held breath.*
Vane relayed it, and Marek's jaw tightened, already calculating. "I'll want that perimeter searched at first light. Whoever left this can't have gone far in a single hour, not through terrain this rough in full dark."
"Do it," Vane said. "And wake Talwyn. If she's decided to act personally rather than through the Chancellery, everything he's found about her methods just became considerably more urgent to understand, and I want his analysis of what this note might actually mean before the sun's fully up."
"And Freya," Vane added, quiet. "She and Kael need to hear this tonight, not in the morning. If Voss considers this an accounting to even, I doubt she'll limit her attention to only one of the bonds she's spent thirty years hunting. They deserve the chance to prepare, same as the rest of us."
Marek nodded, grim, and moved to wake the rest of the garrison's council, the note still clutched in Vane's hand, its single cold line settling over the command tent like the first true frost of a winter none of them had properly braced for.
*Vane,* Eric said, quiet, once Marek had gone. *Whatever she intends by this, we face it exactly as we've faced everything else so far. Prepared, and together, and unwilling to let her patience outlast our own resolve.*
"I know," Vane said, low, folding the note carefully rather than crumpling it, some instinct telling him the exact wording might yet matter to whatever came next. "I just hoped, for a little while longer, that we'd actually bought ourselves some peace."
*We did,* Eric said, gentle despite the returning dread. *Two months of it, real and earned. Whatever she attempts now, that peace already happened. Nothing she does can undo the fact that it was real, however briefly.*
Vane exhaled, slow, and set the note down on the map table where the rest of the council would soon gather to study it, the fragile ease of the past two months already hardening, once more, into the wary readiness that had carried them through every threat before this one, and would, he suspected, need to carry them through whatever Voss intended to attempt next.
