Ginjiro moved to a new location after the temple.
Soma did not go to the hillside for eight days following the incident with the search party. Not from Ginjiro's instruction — from his own assessment. If the search party had been in that area, lingering near it increased the probability that someone would notice a pattern: a child who went to the same area repeatedly. Patterns were information.
On the eighth day he found the marker at the old oak tree at the eastern forest edge — the sign system they had developed without explicitly naming it, a notation that pointed northeast. He followed it to a low-roofed woodcutter's hut in a shallow valley between two hills, about two miles from the village in a direction most villagers had no reason to travel.
Ginjiro was inside when he arrived — working on something, as always, the occupation varying but the quality of attention constant.
"You waited eight days," Ginjiro said without looking up.
"The search party had been in the area. Maintaining a visible pattern of travel toward the same location seemed inadvisable."
"Correct." He set down what he was working on. "You need to start moving in the wider world."
Soma looked at him.
"Not the hillside. Not the forest. The town." Ginjiro looked at him. "You've been practicing in isolation for long enough that you know what you're doing. You don't know how it functions in an environment with more variables."
"When?"
"In two days. You and I will go into Kamino together. I need to verify something. You will observe — not practice, not test yourself. Observe. See how the system actually operates from inside its own environment rather than watching it pass through the edge of your village."
"What will I be looking for?"
"I'll tell you what I find. You find what I don't tell you."
---
Kamino was larger than Soma had held in his mind.
He had been there before, in the life that was Tsuchiya Soma's — a few times with his father, when his father needed supplies that the village could not provide. Those visits had been experienced through the eyes of a child moving close behind an adult, seeing what was immediately in front and not looking far.
Now he saw it properly.
They entered from the western gate, Ginjiro walking at a pace that matched the flow of morning traffic and Soma three steps behind in the position that looked like a child following an adult they knew. Not conspicuous. Not invisible either — conspicuous invisibility was its own kind of signal.
Kenji's sorting process began automatically.
Five types of people in the market district this morning: merchants and their workers, moving with the direction of purpose; buyers, slower, pausing, turning; local residents on errands, moving in short arcs and returning; travelers passing through, slightly lost in the spatial sense that people unfamiliar with a layout always were; and the fifth type, which he found within two minutes of entering the market.
They did not look at goods. Did not look at people they were talking to. Looked at space — the entrances, the exits, the walls, the alleys. The patterns of movement through the space rather than the content of the space.
He counted three within five minutes.
"Do you see them?" Ginjiro said quietly, not turning.
"Three," Soma said. "I may have missed one. There's a possibility of a fourth near the eastern pottery stall — the man with the grain sack who hasn't moved in eight minutes despite being in a market at a busy hour."
"Four," Ginjiro confirmed. "Two for the same organization. Two for a different one."
"How do you distinguish between organizations?"
"Pattern of coverage," Ginjiro said. "Two people covering the same area coordinate without looking at each other — their coverage zones don't overlap. When two people from different organizations are in the same space they both cover slightly less than optimal, leaving a gap that neither wants to step into."
Soma processed this. It was a level of reading he had not been doing — he had been identifying individuals, not the relationship between the coverage patterns of multiple individuals.
"The tea house," Ginjiro said. "Corner table."
They went in.
---
Soma had been in this tea house once before — that first visit to Kamino with Ginjiro, what felt like a long time ago now. He recognized the layout: four tables, low lighting in the morning, the kind of place that served people who wanted to sit without being hurried.
The corner table: back to the wall, sight lines covering the entrance and two-thirds of the interior. Ginjiro sat in the position opposite that — not his preferred position, Soma noted, but the secondary position. The primary position was already occupied.
Soma sat where he could see the primary occupant indirectly.
A young man — perhaps twelve or thirteen, Soma estimated. Tall for the age. Hair neatly tied. Clothing better than ordinary but not the clothing of a high-status family. Moving to his seat with the unhurried quality of someone who had not had to think about how to move since childhood.
The young man's right shoulder sat fractionally lower than his left.
The pattern of callouses that Soma could infer from the grip of his fingers around the tea cup was not the pattern of a farmer or a craftsperson.
He had been trained. For years. From childhood.
The young man ordered tea, sat, and looked out at the street through the shop entrance. Systematically. The spatial awareness of someone who had made this kind of observation so many times it required no dedicated attention.
Soma looked away and looked at his own cup.
"Who is he?" he said quietly.
"Ren Mikage," Ginjiro said. Not lowering his voice more than necessary. In the background sound of the tea house this was fine. "Son of a jonin from the Hayashi clan. Medium-sized clan. Not strong, not weak — they've survived by never committing clearly to any side long enough to become a target." A pause. "He's been trained properly since he was about five years old. He'll be a chunin before he's fifteen if nothing goes wrong."
"He's doing a solo observation task," Soma said. "Learning to watch in a real environment without direct supervision."
"Probably."
Soma looked at the young man — or looked at the edge of his field of view where the young man was — and thought about what eight years of proper training meant in concrete terms. The posture. The automatic spatial awareness. The eight-year accumulation of patterns that had become reflexes.
"He has eight years," Soma said. "I have nine months."
"Yes."
"The gap can't be closed by doing the same things he did in the same way."
"No," Ginjiro agreed.
"Then what closes it?"
Ginjiro looked at his tea cup for a moment.
"Do things he can't do," he said. "Because of how he was taught."
Soma sat with that.
The young man — Ren Mikage — looked around the tea house once more with the systematic sweep. Did not pause at Soma or Ginjiro. Continued.
He had already been here when they arrived. Had already assessed them and placed them in a category and moved on.
That category was: not a concern.
Soma understood why. They looked like what they were meant to look like — an older man and a child, ordinary, unremarkable, nothing that should pull trained attention.
But Ren Mikage had not asked why the bridge didn't creak. Had not constructed a framework for what technique was doing before he practiced it. Had been taught what to do and had learned it deeply — and would not be able to improve it the way someone could improve something they understood from the inside.
"The thing he can't do," Soma said slowly. "He knows technique because he was taught it. He doesn't know why it works. Which means he can't adapt it. Can't improve it. Can't create from first principles."
Ginjiro said nothing. Which was its own kind of answer.
"That's the advantage," Soma said. It was not a question.
"That's the advantage that actually exists," Ginjiro said. "Not a technique advantage. An understanding advantage. Harder to close from his side than from yours."
They finished their tea.
The young man left before them — stood, checked his surroundings in the brief habitual sweep, walked out. Clean and precise and already looking ahead to the next thing.
Soma watched him go.
Eight years. Well-trained. Son of a jonin.
And not one of those eight years had included the question: why does this work?
---
On the road back to the village, Ginjiro said: "There's something I haven't taught you yet. We start next time."
"What is it?"
"How to read people when they're talking to you. Not from a distance — from two feet away, with them looking at your face." He walked without looking at Soma. "It's different from reading movement and posture. It requires different attention and it builds on different things."
"You said it was what you haven't taught anyone before."
"Still haven't taught it," Ginjiro said. "Shown. Explained. Demonstrated conditions for it to be learned. That's different from taught." He paused. "Come in two days. And the session we have — you'll learn by watching. First, you watch me do it. Then we discuss what you saw."
"What will I watch you do?"
Ginjiro looked at the road ahead.
"Talk to someone who is lying to me," he said, "and show you what that looks like when you know how to see it."
Soma walked the rest of the way back thinking about the young man in the tea house.
Ren Mikage. Twelve, thirteen years old. Eight years of training. A jonin's son.
A specific person, which was easier to think about than an abstract system.
A specific person was a reference point. And reference points, Kenji had always found, were what made the distance between two things measurable rather than just large.
He could not measure large. He could measure the distance to a reference point.
He walked home.
