The third practice session at the temple.
Not the third day — there had been four days of recovery between the first and second sessions, and three between the second and third. Ginjiro had been specific about the interval: too short and the body consolidated nothing; too long and the nervous system lost the thread of what had been built.
Soma had used the intervals.
Alone in the courtyard of the abandoned storage shed below the village, in the early hours before his father woke, he had practiced falls on the dirt rather than stone. The dirt was more forgiving and allowed higher volume — he could do twenty repetitions in the time it would take to do six on stone. He used the dirt sessions to build the mechanical pattern and the stone sessions to test whether the mechanical pattern held under the conditions that actually mattered.
By the third session it was mostly holding.
Not perfectly. The falls where the direction was expected had become clean — shoulder contact, roll, distribution. The falls where the direction was unexpected were still inconsistent. When his body lost its spatial reference, the old reflex occasionally broke through and the hand went out.
Ginjiro had said the third session would introduce something new.
It did. But not in the way Soma expected.
---
The session began with the fall practice as usual.
Then Ginjiro said: "Today we're going to be interrupted."
Soma looked at him.
"Not by accident," Ginjiro continued. "I arranged it. There are four men coming up the western slope. They know the general area of the temple but not the specific location — they're the same kind of people who have been searching this area for some weeks now. They'll reach the outer edge of the courtyard visibility range within about twenty minutes."
He said this as if it were a training parameter he was announcing before a drill.
"What do we do?" Soma asked.
"You create false tracks to the northwest while I exit to the east by the route I know. Both tracks will divide their attention. The northwest terrain is familiar to you from your walk last week." Ginjiro looked at him steadily. "You have five minutes to create enough track evidence to be convincing. Then move northeast down the khe stream bed and come out at the flat ground before heading back toward the village."
He was already beginning to compact his pack as he spoke.
"Understood," Soma said.
"Go."
---
Soma went northwest.
The northwest terrain was familiar — he had mapped it on the walk up the previous session. Soft ground in the lower section where a stream had run through before diverting, firmer ground above where the tree roots held the soil. The soft section held footprints clearly.
He created track evidence: not complicated, not theatrical. Footprints in soft earth at consistent intervals, a branch bent in the direction of movement in one location, a compression at a reasonable resting point. Enough to suggest a person had moved through deliberately, not enough to look artificially created to someone who knew what they were looking at.
Five minutes.
He had done this in four.
He turned northeast and moved toward the stream bed.
The stream bed was dry — late season, water pulled back. The rocks in the bed provided surfaces that did not hold prints. He moved through it at good pace, water-reading and rock-reading he had practiced in the paddy terrain below translating directly to this different application.
He was doing well.
And then he heard the men.
Not from far away. From close. The northwest group had split — one portion had come around faster than Ginjiro's twenty-minute estimate, using a different route up the slope that neither of them had accounted for. Two of the four were now moving along the upper edge of the stream bed, approximately thirty steps to his right and slightly ahead.
Soma stopped.
Not because he made a decision to stop. Because his legs stopped before the decision arrived.
Two seconds. Maybe three.
Kenji in his head was running: move, conceal yourself, there are at least four options visible from where you're standing right now, the large stone on the left provides cover from the sight line of the two men, move immediately—
But his body stood motionless and his mind had been suddenly filled with something that Kenji had no accurate name for.
Not fear in the way he understood fear — elevated heart rate, increased cortisol, the fight-or-flight response he could describe in physiological terms. He had felt versions of that before.
This was different.
This came from below — not from his mind but from somewhere in his chest and stomach, a cold and sharp sensation without a name in any framework Kenji had ever used. Not I might be detected. But I might die right now on this hillside and my father will not know where I went.
Two seconds. Three.
Then something else took over.
Not Kenji's analysis. Soma — the child who had grown up learning that lying down quickly was the optimal strategy, who had learned before he could articulate it that there was always a way to be smaller and harder to see — moved.
Not running. Moving low and fast and toward the large stone on the left, which he had already registered as cover without consciously processing it. Three points of contact with the ground when necessary. No sound.
He pressed himself behind the stone and did not breathe.
Footsteps. The two men passing along the upper bank of the stream, conversation — two people, not addressing each other about what they were searching for, just confirming positions and direction. The first man passed level with the stone. The second, slightly behind. Their conversation continued moving away.
Soma pressed against the stone and counted.
Not counting for accuracy — counting because it was a simple action he could anchor to and it prevented the other thing from expanding further.
Ten. Twenty. Thirty.
The footsteps faded completely.
He waited another count of thirty before he moved.
---
Ginjiro was at the lower edge of the stream bed when Soma emerged.
Not waiting — moving, but slowly, which meant he had come out ahead of schedule and was now giving Soma time to catch up rather than continuing on.
He looked at Soma when he arrived. One quick look, head to feet, the assessment check.
"You're intact."
"Yes."
"You were delayed."
"Two of the four came up a different route. They came alongside the stream bed. I was in the stream bed."
Ginjiro said nothing for a moment. Then: "How close?"
"Thirty steps. They passed without seeing me."
"What did you do?"
"I moved behind a large stone on the left bank." He paused. "Not immediately. There were two or three seconds before I moved."
Ginjiro looked at him.
"Two seconds." Soma said it before Ginjiro could ask. "If they had turned at the wrong moment in those two seconds, I would have been visible."
"What happened in those two seconds?"
Soma thought about how to describe the thing he had felt — not to make it sound better or worse than it was, just to describe it accurately.
"My body stopped," he said. "It was the first time it had genuinely believed it might die. Not my mind — my body. My mind has known since the beginning that this was possible. But the body understood it differently and at a different speed, and in those two seconds the difference between those two speeds was visible as two seconds of motionlessness."
Ginjiro was quiet for a moment.
"And then?"
"And then the part of me that grew up in this village took over and moved me behind the stone before the analysis part could give instructions."
Another pause.
"That's what I mean," Ginjiro said finally, "when I say this kind of learning costs something that can't be prepared for in advance." He turned and began walking back toward the flat land. "Next time will be one second. And the time after that, there won't be a pause at all."
"If there's a next time," Soma said.
"If there's a next time," Ginjiro agreed. "That's the price. No timeline waits for you to be ready. That's the thing no one in this trade tells you because they can't — it's only understood after you've paid it."
They walked back in the direction of the village.
Soma's hands, he noticed somewhere on the return path, were not shaking the way they had after the first physical session. They were completely still.
He was not sure what that meant. He filed it without a label and kept walking.
