The mission came through Ren seventeen days after the acceptance.
Not through the private contact point — through the official relay, point three, near the old stone wall at the east end of Kamino's market district. A small folded cloth with notations in the system Mikage Daichi had given him.
The request was specific: a merchant named Okada who frequented a small eating house near the south market, currently considering a new business arrangement with a partner called Matsuda. The arrangement, if completed, would draw Okada into a distribution network that was connected to Nishikawa's operations without Okada's knowledge. The objective: cause Okada to pause before signing without creating any visible intervention.
Soma read the cloth once, committed it to memory, and burned it.
He spent the rest of that day doing what Ginjiro had taught him to do before anything else: understand the problem, not the solution. What was the real constraint?
Okada was cautious — Mikage Daichi had mentioned this in the relay, which meant it was a relevant characteristic. Cautious people who encountered unexpected information about a potential partner paused. They did not need to be told to pause. They needed the right information at the right moment.
The right information: Matsuda had a pattern of delayed payment to small suppliers. This was documented, verifiable, the kind of thing Okada could check independently. Not a fabricated negative — a real one, specific enough to be credible, available from other sources.
The method: not delivered directly to Okada. Placed in the air near him, from a source that had no apparent connection to him or his business deliberations.
Soma knew this method. He had used a version of it with the merchant in the warehouse district, months ago, before he had formally started working for anyone.
But this was different in one respect: then, he had been acting alone, with only Ginjiro aware of his plan. Now, there were other people in the chain — the relay system, Mikage Daichi, whoever would eventually receive Okada's commercial decision as an outcome. People who would not be asked but who would be affected by whether the mission succeeded or failed.
He went to the south eating house the following morning.
---
Okada was at the corner table — Mikage Daichi's description had been accurate about the positioning habit. The eating house had four tables. The table to Okada's right was occupied by two men discussing prices. The table directly in front — between Okada and the entrance — was empty.
Soma looked at the layout for a few seconds from outside.
The relay had said adjacent table, right side. But the right side was already occupied. The table in front offered a different angle — not adjacent in the conventional sense, but in the sightline and the ambient sound space of the room, a conversation at the front table would travel naturally toward the corner.
He went in and sat at the front table.
Called the serving person over. Ordered a bowl of morning rice. Then, in the voice of a child making casual conversation rather than a child speaking to a specific person:
"I heard someone in the market saying that the Matsuda house has a habit of paying late to the small suppliers. Is that known around here?"
The serving person looked at him — the look of an adult mildly interested in what a child was repeating. "Where did you hear that?"
"A couple of women at the fabric stalls. I didn't understand why it mattered but they seemed to think it did."
"The Matsuda house," the serving person said, half to herself. "I haven't heard that specifically but I wouldn't be surprised."
Soma turned back to his bowl as if he had satisfied a minor curiosity and was now done with the topic.
He did not look at Okada's table.
He sat and ate. The ambient conversation of the eating house continued around him — pricing discussions, weather commentary, the ordinary texture of a working morning.
When he stood to leave, he heard a very quiet sound from the direction of the corner table: the sound of utensils being set down. Not placed — set down, the specific quiet of someone who had paused mid-meal because something had captured their attention.
He left without looking back.
---
Hana found the flaw he hadn't seen.
He had not planned to go to Shiro that day — the mission was complete, or as complete as it would be until Okada's decision became visible in outcome. But he had been near the road east anyway, and going to Shiro was a habit that had made itself.
Hana was in the courtyard when he arrived. She heard him at the alley entrance and did not turn.
"You were in Kamino this morning," she said.
"Yes."
"The eating house near the south market."
Soma stopped. "How?"
"A vendor I know saw you go in and come out." She turned now. Not accusingly — with the direct look of someone raising a point that needed to be raised. "I'm not asking what you were doing. I'm pointing at something you may not have noticed."
"Tell me."
"You're building up a history in this area. Not a large one yet. But you've been in and out of Kamino in ways that someone who was watching the pattern of the area over time would begin to notice. Not as anything specific — just as a recurring face. And recurring faces without obvious purpose start to accumulate attention even when each individual appearance is explainable."
Soma stood with that.
She was right. He had been managing each appearance individually — each visit to the eating house, the relay points, the market observations, all individually reasonable. But the aggregate pattern was a different thing from any single instance.
"The aggregate visibility," he said.
"Yes." She sat down on the wooden crate. "You told me once that visiblity is a resource. Which means visibility has a budget. You've been spending from it without tracking the total."
He sat down across from her.
This was why he had come to Shiro — not consciously, but in the way that bodies sometimes moved toward what they needed before the mind articulated the need. He had needed someone who would say the thing he had not seen.
"How do I vary the pattern without creating a new pattern in the variation?" he asked.
"You can't do it alone," Hana said. "The solution to pattern visibility is not randomization — random patterns look random, which is its own pattern. The solution is legitimization. If your appearances in Kamino are associated with a consistent and unremarkable reason, the aggregate stops accumulating the wrong kind of attention."
"What reason."
"You're a child who runs errands. Picks up small items for a household or a farm. Does small jobs for coin." She looked at him. "Nothing specific enough to investigate. Generic enough to be invisible in the aggregate because half the children in the district are doing the same thing."
"I build a cover persona that spans all the appearances rather than creating a new cover for each one."
"Yes." Hana turned to the courtyard wall and was quiet for a moment. "Ginjiro taught you the individual-level work. The aggregate-level thinking is different. I had to learn it by making the mistake you're beginning to make."
"You made it."
"And I corrected it before it became serious. So did the person who taught me to see it." She glanced back at him. "Now I'm that person for you on this particular lesson."
Soma nodded.
"The mission today," he said. "It was done correctly for what it was. But the larger pattern context was not managed."
"The mission was fine," she said. "The lesson is about what comes after the mission."
He stayed for the rest of the afternoon, and they talked through the architecture of what a legitimate visible persona for Kamino would look like: what tasks it could be seen doing, what spaces it could occupy without raising questions, how to maintain it over time without it becoming a pattern in itself.
By the time he left for the village, the shape was clear.
And he carried the other thing too: the fact that Hana had told him the thing he hadn't seen, and that he had known enough to come to someone who could tell it before the mistake became serious.
Ginjiro had built that into him without naming it.
The willingness to be told.
