He found Hana by accident.
Or more precisely — Hana found the accident that led to them meeting. A narrow alley behind the eastern warehouse district of Shiro where the sound of someone doing something requiring sustained controlled breathing was coming from a space that seemed, from the street, to be empty storage.
Soma had been building his knowledge of Shiro's terrain since learning about the two relay points there. Systematic — not the random exploration of a tourist but the deliberate mapping of someone who needed to know this space well enough to move through it under conditions that might not allow time for orientation.
He had been in Shiro three times already that month.
This was the fourth.
The alley was a path he had not taken before. The sound stopped him before he had consciously decided to stop — the recognition happening below the deliberate processing level, in the pattern-recognition layer that months of practice had built.
He turned toward the source.
---
The courtyard was small and bare — packed earth, no grass, a water barrel in one corner, wooden crates stacked against two of the three walls that enclosed it. The fourth side opened to the alley through a gap barely wide enough for one person to pass.
A woman in the center of the courtyard.
Middle-aged, possibly older — the kind of face that was difficult to age precisely because the weathering of it had happened from something other than simple years. She was moving through a form — not a training drill Soma recognized from observation of other practitioners, something more contained, each movement deliberately small in its footprint while maximally precise in its execution.
The biomechanics of someone trained to operate in confined spaces over a long time.
She stopped when she became aware of him.
Not startled — the stop of someone choosing to stop rather than someone surprised into it.
She looked at him. He was standing at the gap in the wall.
"You didn't step in," she said.
"I wasn't invited."
She looked at him for a moment with the evaluating quality that Soma had learned to recognize as the particular attention of someone who had been trained to assess rather than assume.
"Where are you from?"
"Village west of Kamino."
"What are you doing in Shiro?"
"Learning the terrain."
A brief silence.
"On whose behalf?"
"No one sent me here specifically," he said. "I came because knowing terrain before you need it is better than trying to learn it when you need it."
The woman looked at him for a long moment. Then she sat down on one of the wooden crates and looked at him with the expression of someone who had decided to change the frame of the conversation.
"How old are you?"
"Ten."
"And you think that way."
"Yes."
"Someone taught you."
"Someone created conditions for me to learn it. The thinking was mine."
She looked at him differently after that — not more or less evaluatingly, but differently. The thing she was evaluating had shifted.
"Come in," she said.
---
Hana.
No surname — she said so directly when he introduced himself and offered his own in return. "I stopped using the family name some years ago. It doesn't apply anymore."
Soma understood what that meant in the context of this world without needing elaboration. Someone who had been part of a clan structure and was now outside it. The name had been part of the clan's territory, in a sense — using it would mean claiming an affiliation that no longer existed or that had been severed.
"Former chunin," she said. Not reluctantly — with the flatness of someone who had said it enough that it was now just information. "Tsuru clan. No longer exists."
"I heard of Kuroishi," Soma said. "Not Tsuru."
"Tsuru was smaller. Less historically significant. The dissolution was not remarkable enough to be widely known." She looked at him. "You know about Kuroishi."
"The person who taught me was the last surviving member of Kuroishi's inner operational structure."
Hana was still for a moment.
Not the stillness of surprise — the stillness of significant information arriving and being placed carefully.
"Was," she said.
"He died recently."
She looked at the wall of the courtyard. Not avoiding his eyes — looking at a point where she could think clearly without the distraction of eye contact.
"I met Shiro once," she said. "A long time ago, when he was still in Kuroishi. He was known in the circles I was in as someone who understood things rather than only knowing them." She looked back at him. "He taught a ten-year-old farm child."
"He created conditions for a ten-year-old farm child to teach himself."
Something shifted in Hana's expression — very small, but real. The kind of response that happened when a statement landed in a place that was already prepared to receive it.
"That's what a good teacher does," she said.
"That's what he said."
They sat in the courtyard for the rest of the afternoon, in the way of two people who have discovered they are in unexpectedly adjacent territory and are deciding what that means.
Soma talked less than Hana. He had learned from Ginjiro that the person who talks less in these early conversations gathers more useful information about the person they're talking to.
But when he talked, he talked honestly. He had also learned that the people worth talking to recognized honesty and responded to it differently than they responded to performance.
When the light began to go, Hana said: "The hours I practice here — you asked about them before you left the first time. Not precisely. But the question was in what you said."
"Most afternoons," she said. "After the midday meal when the alley is quiet."
"I'll be in Shiro sometimes," Soma said.
"I know," she said. "That's why I told you."
---
He walked back toward Kamino in the failing light.
Thinking about what he had just encountered.
A former chunin of a dissolved clan, living alone in a small town, practicing a form in a private courtyard with no audience and no purpose except that her body needed to practice. Disconnected from the network she had once been part of. Carrying knowledge and experience and the particular kind of sight that came from decades of being in the world that Soma was only beginning to enter.
She had not asked him what he wanted. She had told him when she practiced.
That was an invitation, in the language of people who did not make invitations obvious.
Soma thought about what Ginjiro had said about how he had ended up in the forest — not by plan but by the logic of elimination. Each option that involved being in the open system had been removed. The forest had remained.
Hana was in an analogous position in Shiro. The system had removed her. She remained.
Something was taking shape around him that he had not designed. He was not yet certain what it was.
But he was beginning to understand that the people who ended up outside the official structures of this world were not, necessarily, the least capable people it had produced.
Sometimes they were the ones it had been unable to contain.
