Hana said there was someone else.
Not on the second visit. On the third — when some kind of threshold had been crossed in whatever assessment she was running internally, and she decided the information was worth passing.
"Someone in Shiro who might be worth your time," she said. They were sitting in the courtyard in the late afternoon, the same wooden crates, the same quality of light at this hour. "Not a practitioner in the physical sense. Something different."
"Different how?"
"Skills that the system doesn't know how to train because they don't fit the framework the system uses for thinking about what skills are." She looked at him. "I've watched him for about six months. He asks better questions than most people twice his age. He built something I haven't seen built before — and built it alone, from nothing, because he needed it and no one else was going to build it for him."
"How old?"
"Twelve."
Soma thought about that for a moment. Two years older than him. Two years younger than Ren.
"Will he meet me?"
"If you meet him the way you met me — without forcing the frame." She looked at him steadily. "Don't go to him with what you want from him. Go to him with what you are."
"That's how you can tell if someone is worth trusting," Soma said.
"Yes," Hana said. "Because people who are performing can perform to a standard. People who are real are inconsistent in specific ways. And those specific ways tell you more than any performance does."
She gave him the location: a room above a medicine shop at the north market corner of Shiro. The shop owner was an older man who received help with dispensing and organization in exchange for letting a young person use the upper space.
"He'll be there most mornings," she said. "He doesn't leave early."
---
Soma went the following morning.
Not unannounced in the sense of not having thought about it — but without a specific request or opening, which was what Hana had meant. He knocked on the door to the upper room and waited.
The person who opened it was taller than Soma by a significant margin — thin in the way of someone who had not always eaten enough rather than the thin of someone who chose not to eat, dark-haired, with ink stains on both hands. He looked at Soma with eyes that Soma recognized immediately as doing something specific: they moved across him the way eyes moved across a complicated object, and the movement was not random.
Reading.
Not the same kind of reading Hana did, or the jonin did, or that Soma himself had been building. Something lateral to those — reading object and space and configuration rather than intent and bearing and social signal.
"You're not from Shiro," the person said. Not a greeting — an observation delivered in place of one.
"Kamino district," Soma said. "My name is Tsuchiya Soma."
"Itsuki." No surname offered. "What do you want?"
"I'm not sure yet," Soma said. "Hana said you were worth meeting. I came to see if she was right."
Itsuki looked at him for a moment. Then stepped back from the door.
"Come in."
---
The room was not large but it was dense.
Shelves on three walls — not disordered, but packed with things whose organization was not immediately apparent to someone who didn't understand the system behind it. Small containers with labels in a notation Soma didn't recognize. Bound bundles of paper. A large flat table covered with papers and one very large piece that appeared to be some kind of map — but not a geographical map, something structured differently.
Soma looked at the map without pretending not to look at it.
"What is this?" he asked.
"A contact network chart." Itsuki sat down at the table across from the map. "Who can be reached through whom, in which directions, with what conditions."
"For this area?"
"For the region between here and Kamino, and two towns east." Itsuki looked at him. "You can read maps."
"Some kinds. Not this notation."
"It's mine. I made it because the existing notation systems I had access to didn't capture what I needed to capture." He paused. "If I explained the logic, you could probably read it."
"How long would it take?"
Itsuki looked at him — not evaluating threat or motive this time. Evaluating something more specific.
"One afternoon," he said. "If you understand why I built it the way I built it."
"Then show me why you built it that way."
Itsuki looked at him for another moment.
Then he began.
---
Itsuki had built the notation system because he needed to track something that no existing system had categories for: the movement of information through informal networks, with all the conditions attached — who trusted whom, in what directions, under what circumstances, with what lag time.
He explained this in about three sentences and then stopped talking and waited.
Soma understood what the wait was for. He was being asked to demonstrate comprehension before more was offered.
"The existing systems track people or goods," Soma said. "You needed to track the relationship between people and the qualities of those relationships. So you built a notation that encoded relationship quality rather than just relationship existence."
"Yes." Itsuki uncapped a small brush and pointed to a specific symbol on the map. "This means the connection is functional in one direction but not the other — information travels from A to B but not back reliably. This—" another symbol "—means the connection is conditional: it works during periods of low conflict but not during periods of high conflict."
"These are properties," Soma said. "You're notating properties of relationships the way an engineer would notate properties of materials."
Itsuki's brush stopped moving.
He looked at Soma.
"Where did you learn to think about it that way," he said. Not a question — a response to something that had landed unexpectedly.
"From a different kind of training," Soma said. "Someone who understood principles rather than only practices."
"The former Kuroishi chunin."
Soma looked at him. "Hana told you."
"She mentioned it to the shop owner," Itsuki said. "He mentioned it to me. He doesn't know what it means — he just told me the way he tells me other things he notices. Because I've made it clear to him that things he notices are worth telling me." He paused. "That took about four months to establish."
"You built an information source from the shop owner."
"I made it worth his while to share what he observes. In exchange, I help him with things that are worth his while. It's not complicated — but you have to know what the person values and what it costs you to provide it." Itsuki looked at the map. "Most people don't think about the second part."
They spent the rest of the morning with the notation system. By the end of it, Soma could read approximately eighty percent of the symbols on the map — not because he had memorized them but because once Itsuki had explained the underlying logic, most of the symbols could be derived from the logic rather than learned individually.
Itsuki watched him demonstrate this and said nothing for a moment.
Then: "The system has a consistent logic. Once you understand the logic, the symbols are derivable. That's deliberate — I built it that way because I don't want a system that only I can use. I want a system that anyone who understands its purpose can learn quickly."
"So it's designed to be transmitted," Soma said.
"Yes." Itsuki looked at him. "I built it alone. I don't usually tell people that I designed it to be transmitted to others. You're the first person I've told."
Soma looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because you were the first person who asked the right question about it in the first twenty minutes," Itsuki said. "Everyone else asks what it shows. You asked why it was built the way it was built."
---
On the way back to the village, Soma thought about what he had just encountered.
Two people in Shiro. Both outside the official structures. Both carrying something that those structures hadn't thought to develop because those structures categorized usefulness in ways that left gaps.
Hana: the physical reading of people, the aggregate pattern awareness, the particular kind of sight that came from decades outside.
Itsuki: the relational mapping system, the information architecture, the capacity to build tools that didn't exist because the problem they addressed hadn't been formalized.
Neither of them was looking for what Soma was building.
But both of them were, in their different ways, the kind of material that the thing he was building needed.
Not because he had planned it. Because he had gone to the right places and paid attention and let the encounters be what they were instead of forcing them to be what he had expected.
Ginjiro had done this too, he realized.
Not the forest or the hut or the hillside. The way of moving through the world that made certain kinds of encounters possible and others not.
He didn't have a name for it.
But he recognized it when it happened, now.
And that was a beginning.
