After the mission with Okada, twelve days passed without a new assignment.
Not twelve empty days. Each day Soma continued what had become the underlying practice of everything else: observation, movement through Kamino and Shiro at varied times and routes, reading the texture of the two towns and the traffic between them for what changed and what didn't.
He also began building what Hana had suggested: the legitimate visible persona. An errand-running child, unremarkable, attached to no specific household or merchant but available for small tasks at either end of the road between the two towns. Familiar enough to become invisible in the aggregate. Generic enough that no one would think to track him specifically.
This took time to establish. Not elaborate effort — just repetition. Doing visible small things enough times that the presence became expected rather than noticed.
On the thirteenth day, Ren used the private contact point.
The message was short: my father wants to meet. Not at the tea house. The eastern gate of Kamino, morning hour.
---
Mikage Daichi came to the eastern gate without Ren.
He stood near the gate in the way of a man waiting for someone — ordinary posture, unremarkable, the patience of someone accustomed to waiting as a professional condition rather than a frustration.
Soma arrived at the gate from the inside rather than the outside — already in the town, already in a position where his arrival was unremarkable.
The jonin glanced at him when he approached. Not surprise — acknowledgment.
They fell into step together, walking in the direction away from the gate, into the slower-moving section of the morning market. Two people talking while walking — the least suspicious configuration for a conversation that didn't need to be overheard.
"The Okada situation," Mikage Daichi said without preamble. "Okada did not complete the arrangement with Matsuda. He asked further questions about Matsuda's payment history before committing, and what he found was consistent with the concern we needed him to find."
"The information was true," Soma said. "I didn't fabricate the payment delay concern — it was already in the market."
"I know. That's part of why it worked." The jonin looked at the stalls they were passing without pausing at any of them. "How did you know the information was available in the market?"
"I spent a morning listening. The fabric vendors in the southwest section of the market had discussed it about three weeks prior. It had been dormant in the ambient conversation but hadn't been forgotten — the kind of information that becomes available again when someone asks about it indirectly."
"You tracked ambient information over time," Mikage Daichi said.
"I track what people say when they don't think they're providing information. The cumulative texture of those conversations holds things that explicit questioning would never surface."
They walked for a moment in silence.
"Ren told me about the method," the jonin said. "Not the full explanation — the summary. Ask why before asking how." He paused. "I've been doing what I do for thirty years. I've never heard it named that way. But I recognize what it describes."
"Ginjiro named it for me by living it," Soma said. "I gave it the formulation later."
"He was careful about what he built in you." Not sentimental — analytical. "He gave you the foundations rather than the structures. The structures you build yourself, which means they fit the problems you actually face rather than problems he anticipated."
"Yes."
"That means you'll build things he wouldn't have predicted," Mikage Daichi said. "Which is useful and also requires care."
Soma understood the subtext: the jonin was noting that what Soma was becoming was not fully predictable, and unpredictability in a person you work with was something to manage carefully. Not with suspicion — with accurate assessment.
"I try to make my reasoning visible to people who need to trust it," Soma said. "Not the conclusion — the path to the conclusion. So the trust is in the reasoning process rather than only in the outcome."
"That's more reliable," the jonin said. "Outcomes fail. Consistent reasoning is what you can actually count on." He looked at him. "You're doing that now, in this conversation."
"Yes."
---
They stopped at a point where the market traffic thinned — a section between the textile stalls and the food vendors where there was a natural gap, a few seconds without close proximity to other people.
"There's a person in my clan who concerns me in relation to you," Mikage Daichi said.
"Mori Takeshi," Soma said.
The jonin looked at him briefly.
"Ren mentioned the name," Soma said. "Not details — just that he existed and was less patient than you."
"Ren was accurate." The jonin walked again, the gap in the market closing as they moved. "Mori-san believes that variables outside the clan's direct control represent risks that should be minimized. His concern is not unreasonable in principle. His application of it can be premature."
"He considers me a variable outside direct control."
"He considers anyone he didn't train and doesn't have formal authority over a variable outside direct control." Mikage Daichi looked at him steadily. "I'm telling you this not to alarm you but to give you accurate information about the environment you're operating in. Mori-san won't act without my knowledge, and I don't share his assessment of you as a risk. But he watches, and you should know he watches."
"What does accurate behavior from my side look like, given that he watches?"
"Continue doing exactly what you've been doing. The behavior that gives Mori-san nothing to act on is the same as the behavior that makes you effective. If you begin trying to manage his perception specifically, you'll distort something that doesn't need distorting." He paused. "The people who try to manage how Mori-san sees them usually provide him more material to work with than the people who don't think about it."
Soma filed that.
"The next task," the jonin said. "When I have one that fits what you can do — I'll send through the relay. If it doesn't fit, I won't send it."
"You said you wouldn't assign me things you didn't believe I could handle."
"I remember." Mikage Daichi turned back toward the gate section. "I'll also remember that handling something and doing it well are different standards, and the second one is worth holding you to."
He walked away through the market without looking back.
Soma stood for a moment where the market had thinned.
Mori Takeshi. Senior chunin, internal operations. Watching.
And Mikage Daichi telling him about it — which was itself a piece of information about the jonin. He could have not mentioned Mori. He had chosen to mention him, which meant he had decided the information served a purpose that outweighed the risks of Soma knowing about the internal tension.
Soma would continue doing what he had been doing.
Not because ignoring Mori Takeshi was the correct tactical response. Because the jonin was right: the behavior that gave Mori nothing to act on was the same as the behavior that made the work good.
And making the work good was the only thing worth being here for.
