The news about the binding came from an unlikely source.
One of the riders in the Nivora CLB — a woman named Petra who had been competing regionally for six years and who had the particular reputation of someone who knew everyone and forgot nothing — mentioned it to Maren at the equipment shop three weeks after the accident.
Maren had gone back to the shop that morning for the first time. Not to work — she was not ready to work, or not ready to stand behind a counter and be the person who answered questions about binding systems with the patience and precision that the job required. She had gone because Luka had said, with the gentle firmness he used for things he had decided were necessary: "You need to be somewhere other than the hospital for a few hours."
He was right. She had acknowledged he was right and gone to the shop.
Her boss, a compact, organized woman named Vera who had built the shop over twenty years and ran it with the particular authority of someone who had earned every centimeter of it, had greeted her with the calibrated warmth of someone navigating a genuinely difficult situation — neither pretending nothing had happened nor making the situation larger than it already was.
"Take whatever time you need," Vera said. "You know that. But it's good to have you here."
Maren had stood in the back room for a while, running her hands over the inventory — the familiar shapes of bindings and poles and boot systems, the smell of wax and rubber and cold-adjacent things. It had the specific comfort of the known, of a space that had not changed while everything else had.
Petra had come in mid-morning to pick up a boot fitting she had ordered before the season.
She had offered condolences with the directness of someone who had known Maren long enough to skip performance. Then she had said, in the way of someone remembering something that might be relevant: "I heard the binding was an Ardent. The new pre-release model."
Maren had gone very still.
"Where did you hear that?" she said.
"Kai mentioned it. He was at the White Arc venue for the qualifier the week before and he saw the gear setup. Said there was Ardent pre-release equipment in the sponsor packages." She paused. "He thought it was odd. That model hasn't cleared the full safety certification yet."
"Are you certain?" Maren said.
"That Kai said it. Yes. Whether Kai is certain—" She shrugged. "He's usually reliable about equipment. He pays attention."
Maren wrote down Kai's contact information.
She had something new for the list.
---
She told Luka that evening. He listened, sitting across from her at the table in the cabin with the particular focused attention of someone who had decided to be useful rather than protective.
"Not cleared safety certification," he said.
"Not fully. Apparently still in the pre-certification phase for competition use."
"Which means using it in a competition—"
"Would be premature. At best."
He looked at the table.
"At worst," he said, "it's negligent."
"Yes."
He was quiet for a moment. "You need to find Kai."
"I'm going to find Kai."
"And you need to find out who at White Arc authorized the sponsor package."
"I know."
"And you need—"
"Luka."
He stopped.
"I have a list," she said. "It's getting shorter."
He looked at her. The expression that was not quite exasperation, not quite helplessness, settling into something closer to acceptance.
"Okay," he said.
She had contacted Silas that evening with what Petra had told her. He had responded within twenty minutes: I'll look into the certification timeline. Send me Kai's details when you have them.
She had sent the details.
He had been back within an hour with a preliminary timeline — the certification process for the Ardent model, the stage it had reached, the specific language in the competition safety guidelines about pre-certification equipment.
The language was not ambiguous.
Pre-certification equipment was not authorized for competition use.
---
She did not go to the shop the next day.
She went to the hospital, and she sat with Jonas, and she told him about Petra and Kai and the pre-certification language and Silas's timeline. She told him in the even, reportorial way, the way that helped her think.
Then she said: "Luka doesn't want me to keep going."
She paused.
"He hasn't said that. He won't say that, because he knows it won't work. But I can see it — he thinks this is going to hurt me, that I'm going to dig into something and find something that I can't unhurt myself with after." She looked at Jonas's hand. "He's probably right that it's going to hurt. I've factored that in."
The machines.
"He also thinks," she said, "that it's not my job. That there are people whose job this actually is — lawyers, regulators, journalists — and that I should hand it to them and step back."
She considered this.
"I might get to that point," she said. "I think that's probably where this ends — with someone who has the authority and resources to do something with what I find. But I have to find it first. I have to know what I'm handing over."
She looked at him.
"You'd tell me to be careful," she said. "You'd also say I was probably right."
She held his hand.
"I'm registering for Winterline," she said. "In six weeks. Silas is coaching me. I know you have complicated feelings about Silas, or — actually, you never seemed to have complicated feelings about Silas. You always seemed very uncomplicated about him."
She paused.
"I'm the one having complicated feelings about Silas," she said.
She had not meant to say that. It had arrived in the sentence before she had examined it.
She sat with it for a moment.
"Not — it's not complicated," she corrected herself. "He's useful. He knows things I need to know. That's the extent of it."
The machines.
"That's the extent of it," she said again.
She stayed another hour.
On the way out she passed Silas in the corridor — they were still on their overlapping but different schedules, still navigating around each other with the careful precision of people sharing a space that was not quite large enough.
"Certification timeline," he said, without preamble. "The final stage was supposed to complete in January. They started using the equipment in November."
She absorbed this. "Two months early."
"Two months before full certification."
"Can you document that?"
"I'm working on it."
She nodded.
"Thank you," she said.
He nodded back.
They went in opposite directions down the corridor.
She thought: he is useful. That is what this is.
She got in her car and drove to Luka's.
She was going to tell him about the certification timeline.
She was going to tell him she was registering for Winterline.
She was going to sit across the table from him and let him look at her the way he looked at her when he was deciding whether to say what he was thinking, and she was going to wait, and then she was going to tell him that she was going anyway.
That was the shape of it.
She had always been better with a shape.
She drove.
---
The conversation with Luka was exactly what she had expected it to be.
He listened. He did not interrupt. When she finished he looked at the table for a long moment, and then he said: "The certification timeline is significant."
"Yes."
"That's the kind of thing that regulatory bodies care about."
"I know."
"So you could—"
"I need more first." She met his eyes. "A timeline from a CLB rider's secondhand account. A patent application. Preliminary research. It's not enough yet."
He looked at her.
"How much is enough?" he said.
She thought about it honestly. "I'll know when I have it."
He accepted this with the particular resignation of someone who had reached the limit of what arguing would accomplish. She had seen him reach that limit before — with their parents, with his clients, occasionally with the physical reality of injuries that were not progressing the way the textbook said they should. He was good at knowing when to stop pushing.
"Winterline," he said.
"Yes."
"Silas is coaching you."
"Yes."
He turned his coffee cup on the table, not looking at it. "What's his — what does he want from this?"
She considered the question. "To find out what happened. Jonas is his oldest friend."
"That's all?"
She looked at him.
"That's what I know," she said.
He nodded. Turned the cup again. "You're going to do this regardless."
"Yes."
"Then I want you to promise me something."
She waited.
"If it gets dangerous — not inconvenient, not hard, but actually dangerous — you stop and you bring what you have to someone with the authority to do something with it. You don't try to do all of it yourself."
She thought about this. It was a reasonable condition. It was the condition she would have set for someone she cared about in the same situation.
"Okay," she said.
"I mean it, Maren."
"I know you mean it. Okay."
He nodded. Drank his coffee. Looked at her with the expression that was a mixture of things — worry, respect, the specific helplessness of loving someone who was going to do the thing they were going to do.
"I'm going to need help reading some of the medical documentation," she said. "When Jonas — as things develop. I'll need someone who can help me understand the recovery indicators."
"Yes," he said. Without hesitation.
"Thank you."
"You don't have to thank me."
"I know."
They sat for a while.
Outside the window the mountain was visible in the late afternoon light, the upper slopes already in shadow, the lower ones still catching the last of the sun. It was the mountain they had both grown up looking at, that was as much a part of their landscape as the road or the cable car station or the particular smell of the town in winter.
"I'm going to be okay," she said. Not as reassurance. As information.
He looked at the mountain.
"I know," he said. "I just prefer it when you're also okay while you're doing the thing."
She almost smiled.
"I'll try," she said.
He looked back at her.
"That's the best I'll get, isn't it."
"Yes."
He nodded.
They had another cup of coffee.
Outside, the mountain stayed where it was, doing what mountains did, which was not nothing — it was the patient maintenance of its own existence, the continuous and invisible work of being a thing that mattered, that people came to, that people looked at when they needed something that was larger than themselves.
She looked at it for a moment.
Then she looked back at Luka.
"I'm going to the hospital," she said.
"I know."
She stood, put on her jacket, kissed him on the forehead in the way she had not done since they were children and that somehow felt appropriate now, in this kitchen, in this winter.
He let her.
She went.
---
She registered for Winterline the following morning.
The form was straightforward — name, competition history, contact information, the wild-card designation for former sponsored athletes. She filled it out at the table in the cabin with her second cup of coffee, the mountain visible through the window, the form on the screen in front of her.
She hesitated once, at the section that asked for the name of her coach or training contact.
She typed: Silas Wren.
She submitted the form.
She sat for a moment after the confirmation email arrived, looking at it. The language was standard — registration confirmed, welcome to Winterline, here were the details for the first stage.
She thought about what she had just done.
She had done it deliberately, with full knowledge of what it involved. She had decided, and she had acted, and the acting could not be undone, which was what made the deciding real.
She thought about Jonas. About the trial run, the binding, the orange jacket in the snow. About the twelve-page report and the pre-certification timeline and the name Dorian Kade in the patent documentation.
She thought: this is how I get in.
She thought: this is the only way.
She picked up her phone and sent Silas a message: Registered. Stage one in eight weeks.
He responded in three minutes: I'll update the training schedule. Monday morning, seven.
She replied: Fine.
She put the phone down.
She was going back to the mountain.
She was going to do it correctly, carefully, with the preparation it required and the awareness of what it was costing her — not just physically, not just the training hours and the aching muscles and the relearning of things her body had known and then been frightened out of knowing. The cost of being on that mountain again with a different binding on her boots and a different reason for being there and Jonas's voice absent from the chair beside her.
She was going to do it anyway.
She sent him one more message: Tell me what you need from me before Monday.
The response took longer this time — twelve minutes, which meant he was thinking rather than reacting.
Then: Come to Ravenline Saturday. We'll look at the stage profiles together and identify the preparation priorities. Bring your current boot setup.
She replied: Seven again?
He replied: Eight is fine.
She replied: Seven.
A pause.
He replied: Seven.
She put the phone down and finished her coffee and got ready to go to the hospital.
She had a direction.
She had a schedule.
She had a list that was getting shorter.
She was going to be okay.
She had told Luka that, and she had meant it, and she was going to continue meaning it for as long as it was required.
She picked up her keys.
She went.
---
At the hospital she told Jonas she had registered.
"Winterline," she said. "Stage one is in eight weeks. I'm working with Silas." She paused. "You'd probably have something to say about both of those things. You'd probably say Winterline is a good idea and then spend twenty minutes asking if I was sure, not because you didn't believe me but because you liked watching me get impatient."
She held his hand.
"And about Silas." She looked at the ceiling, then back at Jonas. "You'd say he's good. You'd say I'm in good hands. You'd probably also say something that was technically about the training but was actually about something else, and you'd say it in a way that was plausibly deniable, and I'd pretend not to catch it, and then we'd both pretend I hadn't caught it."
She was quiet for a moment.
"He's useful," she said. "That's what I know."
The machines.
She thought about the text exchange — seven, he'd written, after she'd pushed it from eight. Seven was fine. Seven is fine had turned into seven, with a pause in between that was just long enough.
She thought: that is not a complicating thing. That is a normal exchange between two people with different ideas about what time to start.
She looked at Jonas.
She thought: you're the one I'm doing this for.
She thought: I know you know that.
She thought: come back so I can tell you the parts I'm not saying out loud yet.
She stayed until visiting hours ended.
She drove home in the dark, past the mountain, past the equipment shop, past the cable car station with its lights on in the cold.
Monday was seven days away.
She had a direction.
She went.
