When a faulty binding on a sponsored ski sends her boyfriend Jonas into a minimally conscious state, Maren Elow refuses to accept the official verdict that he caused his own accident. To access the system that nearly killed them both, she must return to competitive skiing — trained by Silas Wren, Jonas's best friend, a man of quiet precision who has loved her in silence since before she ever belonged to Jonas. Over two winters, Maren chases the truth across race courses and closed-door equipment rooms, while the line between gratitude and something more dangerous grows harder to see. Jonas eventually wakes — but not to the life he left. As the investigation reaches its breaking point, all three must reckon with what they owe each other, what they cannot keep, and what it means to love someone enough to let them go.
