She did not notice the cut until he did.
She had been working through a high-speed drill, the one that pushed the edge of what she could currently maintain without managing, and the fall had been clean — she had gone down in the correct way, rolled, stood up, assessed herself as fine, and proceeded to the next run. The cut on her right palm was from something on the slope — a piece of ice crust, probably, the kind that formed in the temperature range they had been training in — and she had not noticed it until she pulled off her glove between runs and saw the blood.
Not serious. Not deep. The kind of cut that required bandaging to prevent it from becoming a problem and was otherwise straightforward.
She was looking for the kit in her jacket pocket when Silas said: "Give me your hand."
She had not told him about the cut. He had seen — at twelve meters, mid-conversation with his own documentation folder, he had seen her pull off the glove and he had seen the blood.
She extended her hand.
He took off his glove. He looked at the cut — the professional assessment of someone who had seen training injuries for fifteen years, quick and accurate. "Not deep," he said. Which was what she had already determined, but it was information he offered anyway.
He opened the kit he carried — she had learned he always carried a kit, like the paper maps, part of the operational discipline — and he worked on the cut with a focus that was entirely technical. Cleaning, assessing, bandaging. Each step correct.
He was holding her hand while he did this.
She was aware of this.
Not in the way she would have been aware of it three months ago, when the awareness arrived with the weight of categorization, of: what does this mean, where do I put this. She was aware of it the way she was aware of the cold or the angle of the light — as information about the space she was in.
She did not look at him. She looked at her hand.
His hands were careful. They were always careful, she had observed this over months of watching him work — the precision of touch that came from taking things seriously, from believing that how you handled something was as important as what you did with it.
He finished the bandage.
He held her hand for a moment after — one beat, two, the space between completion and release.
She felt his grip.
She did not move.
Then he released. He put his own glove back on. He closed the kit.
"The left turn on the next run," he said. "Your edge entry is still slightly late."
"I know," she said.
"Fix it."
"I know," she said again.
She pulled her glove back on. She went back to the slope.
She fixed the edge entry.
At the bottom he said: "Better."
She said: "Yes."
They went inside.
He made coffee. She made hers. They worked through the documentation for Dr. Marr.
Neither of them mentioned the bandage.
Neither of them needed to.
---
She told Jonas that evening.
She told him about the cut, the kit, the bandage. She told it as information, the way she told him most things.
She did not tell him about the hold, the one beat, two, the space between completion and release.
She held his hand.
"His hands are careful," she said. "You probably noticed that. You're good at noticing that kind of thing."
The machines.
"I've been filing things," she said. "For months. A lot of things." She paused. "I know you know. I know you've been in there, tracking, adding it to whatever picture you're building." She looked at his face. "I trust you with what you're building. Whatever it is."
She looked at the monitor.
"Come back," she said. "Come back and I'll show you the whole picture. All of it. The parts I've filed and the parts I've said out loud and the parts I'm still working out." She paused. "I trust you with all of it."
She held his hand.
She stayed.
The monitor showed a reading — mid-duration, consistent, twenty-eight seconds.
She watched it.
She thought: I know.
She thought: come back.
She stayed until the nurse came.
She drove home in the dark.
She thought about careful hands all the way home.
She filed it.
She slept.
---
Silas thought about Jonas's hands.
He had been in the room three days ago, the late-night visit, and Jonas's hands had been on the blanket in the way they always were — the left one with the healed scar on the palm, faint now, barely visible. He had looked at the scar and thought about the morning of the accident, the seconds in which Jonas had seen what was happening and had gone from observer to participant in the span of a breath.
He thought about the specific decision embedded in that movement — the assessment, the commitment, the action. Jonas had not hesitated. He had seen and he had gone.
He thought: that is how he is.
He thought: that is how he has always been.
He thought about his own hands. About the bandage he had applied this morning, the careful work of cleaning and wrapping, the one beat, two, of holding after the kit was closed.
He thought: you knew what you were doing.
He thought: you also knew when to stop.
He thought: that is still the line. That is still the correct place to stop.
He thought about Jonas's hands and his own hands and the particular things hands said about a person — how they held things, how they worked, what they reached for and what they released.
He thought: Jonas reached.
He thought: I held and released.
He thought: both of those were the right thing.
He went to the hospital the next morning — earlier than usual, before Maren's afternoon visit. He sat with Jonas.
He said: "She got second at stage three." He said it again, because he had said it before and it still seemed worth saying. "Elise beat her by four-tenths."
He sat.
"She laughed," he said. "When I told her about the right line. She laughed the full version." He paused. "You know the one."
The machines.
"She's getting better," he said. "Not at the skiing — at everything. At being here." He paused. "At being here with me."
He was quiet for a moment.
"I know what that means," he said. "I've known for a while what it means." He looked at Jonas's hand — the scarred palm. "You should know I know. Whatever you're building in there, you should know that I know exactly what I'm doing and exactly what I'm not doing."
He sat.
"Come back," he said. "So we can do the rest of this properly."
He stayed for an hour.
He went to Ravenline.
Maren arrived twelve minutes later.
They worked.
They did not talk about hands.
They did not need to.
---
The week after Dr. Marr, the training shifted.
There was no longer a specific competition to prepare for — stage three was done, stage four was three weeks away — and so the sessions changed character slightly, became more exploratory, less targeted. Silas identified things she could improve that were not strictly necessary for the next event but were worth improving. She worked on them.
One morning he said: "Ski the upper section however you want."
She looked at him.
"No instruction," he said. "Just ski it."
She had not done this in months — not without a technical focus, not without the voice of the preparation guiding the choices. She stood at the top of the upper section and looked down.
She thought about what she wanted.
She went.
She went the way she had gone at the offline gathering, the way she had gone on training slopes with Jonas, the way she went when there was no metric and no evaluation, when the slope was just the slope and she was just the person on it and the conversation between those two things was worth having.
At the bottom she looked up.
He was watching. Not with the observer's attention, not the cataloguing gaze — something else. Something more like the way Jonas used to watch her, the way she had seen Jonas watch things he found worth watching.
She thought: file it.
She went again.
She could not stop going again.
She went until her legs were tired and the light was starting to go and the mountain was beginning to cool from the middle of the day toward the cold of the evening.
She came back in.
He had coffee ready.
She sat down.
They did not work. They sat with their coffee and looked out the window at the mountain and did not say very much.
It was, she thought, enough.
It was more than enough.
It was a good day.
She had been having good days.
She thought: this is what a good day feels like when you are not managing it.
She thought: I'll take it.
She took it.
She stayed until it was time to go to the hospital.
She went.
She held Jonas's hand.
She told him about skiing the upper section without instruction.
She told him it felt like the conversation was back.
She told him: come back.
She stayed.
She always stayed.
---
She did not go to the hospital the next morning because Jonas's doctor called.
Not an emergency call — the doctor had been clear about that, the specific careful language of someone managing expectations precisely. Not an emergency. But something to discuss.
She was at Ravenline when the call came. She was on the slope. She felt the phone vibrate in her jacket pocket at the top of the lower section, ignored it, completed the run, and checked it at the bottom.
Dr. Feldmann. Jonas's primary physician since the transfer to the rehabilitation unit.
She called back immediately.
The doctor said: "Jonas has been showing increasingly consistent responsiveness indicators over the past three weeks. The pattern is significant enough that we want to discuss next steps with you and his family."
She stood in the snow at the bottom of the slope and held the phone and said: "What kind of next steps?"
"We believe Jonas may be approaching a threshold of transition," Dr. Feldmann said. "Not an immediate change — these processes unfold gradually. But the indicators are pointing in a direction, and we want to be proactive about planning."
The direction.
She knew what direction the indicators were pointing.
She had sixty-seven entries in her log.
"When?" she said.
"We'd like to meet this week, if possible."
"Tomorrow," she said. "I'll be there tomorrow morning."
She hung up.
She stood in the snow.
She thought: the direction.
She thought: he is coming back.
She thought: he is coming back.
She looked up at the mountain.
She thought: Jonas.
She thought: I told you.
She thought: I knew.
Silas was at the observation position. He had seen her on the phone — she had not moved from the bottom of the slope since finishing the run, which was unusual.
He came down.
She looked at him when he reached her.
She said: "The doctor called. They want to meet tomorrow. About transition planning."
He was very still.
"The pattern," he said.
"Yes."
He looked at her.
She thought: say it.
She said it: "He's coming back."
Silas looked at her.
Then he looked at the mountain.
Then he looked back at her.
"Yes," he said.
They stood in the snow for a moment.
She thought: this is what relief feels like when you have been carrying something for seven months.
She thought: it feels like the cold and the mountain and someone standing beside you who has been here for all of it.
She thought: file it.
She went to the hospital.
She sat with Jonas.
She said: "The doctor called. Tomorrow we're talking about what comes next." She held his hand. "I know you know. You've been working toward this for months. I've been watching you work toward it." She paused. "I'm ready for what comes next."
The monitor showed a reading.
The longest one yet.
She held his hand.
She said: "I'm ready."
She stayed.
She always stayed.
---
Silas went to the hospital that night.
He sat with Jonas.
He said: "The doctor called Maren. Transition planning." He paused. "You've been working toward it. I know you have. Sixty-seven monitor readings — she logged every one."
He sat.
"She's ready," he said. "She told you that. She means it." He paused. "She has been ready for a while, if I'm honest. She has been ready since the second month, when she stopped managing the visits and started just being here."
He looked at Jonas's hand.
"I'm going to go to Auremont," he said. "After you come back. I've decided." He paused. "Not because I have to. Because it's right." Another pause. "You would say: you should go. You would say it in the way you say things that are both true and cost something."
He was quiet.
"Come back," he said. "Come back and say it."
He stayed.
He drove home.
He looked at the Auremont information.
He was ready too.
He thought: two things can be right at the same time.
He thought: Jonas knew that.
He thought: I'm learning it.
He went to bed.
The mountain was outside.
He was still here.
For a little while longer.
And that was exactly right.
You've reached the end of this chapter
