There was no sound.
That was the thing she remembered first, afterward — not the impact, not the cold, not the voices that came later. The absence of the sound that should have been there. The binding release had a sound. Every binding release had a sound: a specific mechanical click, a half-second of metal engaging and then disengaging, the sound of a system doing what it was designed to do.
She had heard that sound thousands of times. She knew it the way she knew her own name.
She did not hear it.
---
The trial run had started well.
She knew this with the objective clarity of someone reviewing footage after the fact, which was how she would eventually think about the whole thing — as footage, a sequence of images with timestamps and angles, something that could be examined from the outside. In the moment, she had only known that her body was doing what she had trained it to do, that the slope was behaving the way she had read it, that the air was cold and clean and the light was exactly right.
The first section. The second. The crossfall in the third, which she navigated the way she had planned to navigate it.
Then the lower section, the steep drop before the run-out. The place on every mountain where the terrain asked you to commit.
She committed.
The landing was a degree or two off. Maybe less. The kind of error that happened, the kind that skiers at her level corrected automatically, a micro-adjustment that the body made faster than thought. Her weight shifted forward and left, her knee rotating slightly inward, and she felt the familiar beginning of the release sequence —
And then nothing.
The binding held.
The rotation continued without the ski releasing, which meant the force had nowhere to go except through the joint, and she was still processing this — the body trying to find a solution to a problem it had never been designed to solve — when something hit her from the left.
Hard. Very hard.
The kind of impact that did not feel like a person at first, felt like terrain, like running into the mountain itself, except that the mountain did not catch her as it hit her, did not try to redirect the force, did not have arms.
She was airborne for a moment. Then she was in the snow.
---
The snow was everywhere. In her collar, against her face, packed into the space between her goggles and her forehead where the seal had failed. Cold in the specific way of snow that you were inside rather than on top of, surrounded by rather than standing on.
She could hear things from very far away. A radio. Voices. Her own breathing, which was happening in short, surprised segments, the breathing of a body that had been shocked into uncertainty about what to do next.
She tried to move.
Something in her left side said: not yet.
She turned her head, because her head was the thing she could move, and the movement brought the slope into her field of vision at a wrong angle, everything tilted, the sky where the mountain should have been and the mountain where the sky should have been, and in between them, in the middle distance, something orange.
Jonas wore orange on the mountain. He said it made him easier to find.
She found him.
He was in the snow, three or four meters from where she had stopped. He was not moving. The orange jacket was very bright against the white, which was the whole point of the orange jacket, which was why she could see him so clearly, which was why the detail that her mind locked onto — the detail it would not let go of for days afterward — was visible from where she was.
His left glove was torn.
Not the outer layer. The whole glove, along the palm, a ragged line that exposed the liner underneath. The kind of tear that did not happen from falling, from sliding, from any of the ordinary violences of being on a mountain. The kind of tear that happened from a specific contact with a specific thing.
She knew what it was. She did not know yet that she knew, but she knew.
She reached for him. She was already moving before she had decided to move, already pulling herself through the snow with her arms because her left side was still saying not yet, already reaching toward the orange jacket that was very bright against the white.
Someone caught her.
"Don't move. Don't move yet. We have people coming."
A voice she did not recognize. Firm, professional, the voice of someone trained to say exactly this in exactly this situation. She looked up and saw a face she did not know, a patrol jacket, a radio in one hand.
"Jonas," she said.
"We have people going to him right now. I need you to stay still."
"He's not moving."
"I know. We have people—"
"He's not moving." She said it again because it seemed like important information, like the kind of information that needed to be stated clearly so that everyone present understood its significance.
The patrol officer held her in place with a calm that felt, from inside the situation, like a specific kind of cruelty.
Behind her, she could hear more voices. More radio calls. The particular vocabulary of people managing an emergency — controlled, technical, each word carrying more meaning than it appeared to. She understood some of it and could not make herself parse the rest.
She was watching Jonas.
He was still not moving.
The orange jacket was very bright.
She had a thought, in the interval between that moment and the next thing, which was not a complete thought but a fragment of one: she was going to need to understand why the binding had not opened.
Then the cold arrived properly, all at once, the kind that came when the body stopped producing the emergency heat of shock and returned to the simple equation of temperature, and with it came a grey at the edges of her vision that she recognized distantly as a problem.
She tried to say something.
The grey won.
---
She woke in white.
Not snow-white. Ceiling-white. The specific white of a room that had been designed for function rather than comfort, with lights that were too steady and air that was too warm after the cold of the outside, and a quality of quiet that was not peaceful but managed, the quiet of a place that controlled its own noise.
She turned her head.
Luka was in the chair by the window.
Her brother looked the way he always looked when he was trying not to look worried — slightly too still, his hands in his lap, his eyes moving to her face the moment she moved as though he had been waiting for exactly that movement for however long he had been sitting there.
"Hey," he said.
"Hey," she said. Her voice was strange. Dry.
He stood, crossed to the bed, looked at her with the careful assessment of someone who had medical training and was trying to use it to override the non-medical part of himself that wanted to react differently.
"How do you feel?"
"Where's Jonas."
Not a question. A direction.
Luka's face did the thing it did when he was deciding how to say something. She had been watching that face her whole life. She knew all its shapes.
"Luka."
"He's here," he said. "He's in the building. He's—" He stopped. Started again. "They're monitoring him. He took a significant impact. They don't have a full picture yet of—"
"Can I see him."
"Not right now."
"Luka—"
"Not right now." He said it the second time more gently, which was worse. "You have a bruised rib and a mild concussion and they want you to stay still for a few more hours. And he's—they're still working. You can see him when they have a clearer sense of what they're dealing with."
She looked at the ceiling.
She thought about the orange jacket. Very bright against the white.
She thought about the torn glove.
She thought about the absence of the sound that should have been there — the click, the release, the mechanical confirmation that the system was doing what it had been designed to do.
She had felt the beginning of the release sequence.
It had not completed.
"Okay," she said.
Luka sat back down.
Outside the window, the mountain was still there, the way it was always still there, the way mountains were regardless of what happened on them. She could not see it from where she was lying, but she knew it was there. She had grown up in Nivora. She always knew where the mountain was.
She was going to need to understand why the binding had not opened.
She held onto that thought the way you held onto something in water — not because it made the water less cold, but because it was something solid, something with edges, something that did not give way when she pressed against it.
She was going to understand why.
That was the first thing.
Everything else was going to have to wait.
---
They let her see him that evening.
A nurse walked her down a corridor that was too bright and too quiet in the way of hospital corridors at that hour, when the daytime activity had settled into something steadier and more permanent. Her ribs were taped and the concussion meant she was moving carefully, and the careful movement meant she had time to think about what she was walking toward.
She had seen Jonas in a hundred different states. Asleep on the couch with his camera on his chest. Absorbed in editing, oblivious to everything. Laughing too hard at something that was, objectively, not that funny. Wet and frozen after a run that had gone longer than planned. She had seen him in all the states that came with two years of knowing someone closely.
She had not seen him like this.
He was very still.
Not the stillness of sleep, which she also knew — the slight movement of breathing, the occasional shift, the body continuing its business even in unconsciousness. This was different. This was the stillness of a body that had been asked to do less than usual, to quiet itself, to redirect its resources toward something internal and urgent.
He had not opened his eyes since the mountain.
She sat in the chair beside the bed and looked at him and did not say anything for a long time. The machines made their steady sounds. The lights in the room were lower than in the corridor, a yellow-white that made everything look slightly provisional, as though the room understood it was a waiting place rather than a destination.
She reached out and put her hand over his.
His left hand. The one with the tear across the palm, which had been cleaned and dressed and was bandaged now, the bandage neat and white, giving nothing away.
She thought about the release lever on the interior of the toe piece. The way it was positioned. The angle of approach that would have been available to someone dropping to the snow beside a falling skier and grabbing for it in the time available.
She thought: he tried.
She thought: he saw what was happening and he tried to fix it with his hands.
She thought: of course he did.
This was the thing about Jonas that she had known within the first weeks of knowing him — that he was a person who moved toward problems rather than away from them, not out of bravado but out of a kind of practical optimism, a genuine belief that the thing could usually be addressed if you got there fast enough.
He had gotten there.
He had not been fast enough, because the time available had been measured in fractions of seconds, because the binding required a specific motion to release manually that was very difficult to execute under those conditions, because none of the circumstances had been favorable.
But he had tried.
She held his hand carefully, so as not to move the bandage, and she looked at his face, which was peaceful in the way of faces that have stopped performing anything.
Outside the window, the mountain was dark. The lights of the venue were still on, catching the upper slopes in a pale wash that made the snow look blue.
She was going to understand why the binding had not opened.
She was going to find out who had set it that way, and why, and what they had been thinking, and whether they had known, and if they had known she was going to ensure that they were not allowed to simply decide that the story was over.
That was what she was going to do.
She would figure out how later.
Tonight she was going to sit here, in this chair, with her hand over his hand, and she was going to be present for whatever this was.
She owed him that much.
She owed him considerably more than that, actually, but the rest of it was going to take time and she had not yet worked out the shape of it. She would. She was good at working out the shape of things, given enough time and enough information.
She was going to get the information.
The machines continued their steady commentary. His chest rose and fell. The bandage on his palm was very white.
She stayed.
---
The nurse came back at ten to say visiting hours were ending.
Maren nodded, did not move immediately. The nurse was patient about it — the particular patience of someone who had learned that the rules existed for good reasons and also that there were moments when enforcing them with full rigidity was its own kind of failure. She waited in the doorway.
Maren looked at Jonas one more time.
She had been composing a list in her head, over the past hour, of everything she would need to know. The specific technical details of the binding — the model, the production batch, the DIN settings that had been applied. The name of the technician who had done the fitting, and the name of whoever had assigned that technician. The chain of decisions that had resulted in this specific piece of equipment being fitted to her boot on this specific morning.
The list was long. It would get longer.
She did not know yet where to begin pulling on it.
Silas, she thought, without quite intending to. Silas would know the technical side of it. He knew equipment the way he knew terrain — from the inside out, with the kind of knowledge that came from having thought seriously about a subject for a long time, from caring about it beyond what was professionally required.
She had not particularly wanted to call Silas. She had not particularly wanted to need him for anything.
But she was sitting beside the bed of the man she loved, looking at his bandaged hand, and the list was very long, and she was going to need to start somewhere.
She stood carefully, mindful of her ribs. Straightened her jacket. Looked at Jonas one more time — at the stillness of him, the machine-assisted rising and falling of his chest, the complete absence of the animation that was so essentially him that its absence felt like an argument for the impossibility of what she was seeing.
"I'll be back tomorrow," she said. Not to the nurse. To him.
She did not know if he could hear.
She was going to behave as though he could, because the alternative — the alternative in which it did not matter what she said, in which he was somewhere past the reach of her voice — was not something she was ready to sit with.
She would sit with it if she had to. Later. When the list was shorter.
She walked back down the corridor, past the nurses' station, out through the double doors into the cold of the Nivora night. The mountain was dark above the treeline. The parking lot was nearly empty. Her breath came out in a cloud and dissolved.
She took out her phone.
She stood in the cold for a moment, looking at the contact she had opened.
Then she typed: Can we meet.
She did not sign it. He would know who it was.
She put her phone in her pocket and walked to her car, and drove back through the town toward the cabin, and did not let herself think about whether he would answer.
He answered before she reached the main road.
The message said: When.
She exhaled, slowly, into the dark interior of the car. The heater was running but the windshield was still fogged at the edges, and through the clear center of it she could see the road ahead, the snow on either side, the lights of Nivora arranged in the valley below like something that had been put there carefully and would still be there in the morning.
She typed: Tomorrow.
Then she put the phone down and kept driving.
She had a list. She had a starting point. She had a direction.
It was not enough. It was, for tonight, exactly enough.
You've reached the end of this chapter
