She went to the hospital late that evening — later than usual, the ward already in its night configuration, the lights lowered in the corridor and the particular quiet of a place that never fully stopped but changed its register after ten.
She had the name Karl Brennan in her notebook. She had Silas's first pass at research — a technical consultant who had worked with Ardent's pre-release development program for three years, whose name appeared in internal documentation as the oversight lead for field testing. She had a clearer shape of what had happened. Not the whole shape yet. But clearer.
She brought Jonas's scarf.
She had found it in the cabin three weeks ago — the grey wool one he wore on the mountain when it was cold enough to matter, stuffed into the back of a drawer where she had been looking for a document. She had not brought it to the hospital before. She did not know why she was bringing it now.
She sat in the chair.
She put the scarf on the edge of the bed, within his reach if he could reach.
"Karl Brennan," she said. "He oversaw the pre-release field testing program. He was in the technical tent before my run." She paused. "Silas knows the name. He's been careful about saying how. I haven't pushed on it yet." She looked at Jonas. "I'll push on it when I need to."
The machines.
"Ilya Voss told me," she said. "He came to me after stage one. He saw the DIN setting, he was in the tent, he didn't ask the question he should have asked." She paused. "He said that. Directly. That he didn't ask the question he should have asked."
She thought about Ilya Voss walking away from her, back toward the technical area. The posture of someone who had done something small and insufficient and knew both things.
"You'd have something to say about that," she said. "About people who do the right thing late. You were always generous about it — you thought the doing mattered more than the timing." She looked at his hand. "I'm not sure I agree. But I'm not going to argue with you about it tonight."
She held his hand.
She placed her other hand over it, the way she did when she needed both hands to hold the weight of the thing she was carrying.
"I thi stage one today," she said. "Seventh place. Clean run. I didn't manage the speed in the upper section. I committed." She paused. "Silas would say that matter-of-factly. He'd say: you committed. As information. Not praise."
She was quiet for a moment.
"He says things as information," she said. "I've noticed this. He doesn't — he doesn't say more than what's true. Which sounds like a low bar but it's actually unusual." She paused. "You do the opposite. You say the thing that's true and also the thing you want to be true and also the thing that would be true if the person you were talking to believed it hard enough. You make things true by saying them."
She looked at Jonas.
"I miss that," she said. Quietly. "I miss you saying things into existence."
The machines. The breathing.
The monitor showed a number she had been watching for three weeks — a number that had stayed stable, that the nurses described as consistent, that was good in the context of what good meant here.
And then: a small change.
Not a spike. Not an alarm. A shift, very slight, in the pattern — the kind that the monitoring system flagged with a small indicator light, the kind she had been taught to recognize as: something is responding.
She looked at it.
She looked at Jonas.
She put her hand on his hand again, both of hers over his.
"Jonas," she said.
Nothing visible changed. The number settled back toward its baseline.
But the light had been there.
She sat for a long time afterward, not moving, not speaking, just holding his hand and watching the monitor with the particular careful hope of someone who had decided not to call it hope but could not prevent herself from feeling it anyway.
She thought: that was something.
She thought: I don't know what.
She thought: I'm going to believe it was something.
She stayed until nearly midnight.
When she left she did not take the scarf.
She left it on the edge of the bed, within his reach, if he could reach.
---
She told Silas about the monitor reading the next morning.
Not first thing — they were already into the training session, she was working through a drill for the second stage terrain, and she mentioned it in the break between sets, the way she mentioned things she had filed and was ready to say.
He looked at her.
"What did the nurse say?" he said.
"I didn't ask the nurse last night. I didn't want it explained away."
He was quiet for a moment. Then: "What did the nurse say this morning?"
"Fluctuations in the responsiveness indicators are within normal range. It might be meaningful, it might not be."
"But."
"But it happened when I was talking to him." She looked at the slope. "I know that's probably not how it works. I know the monitors don't respond to — I know that." She paused. "I'm choosing to believe it anyway."
He was quiet for a long moment.
"That's reasonable," he said.
She looked at him. It was not the response she had expected — the clinical accuracy she had come to anticipate from him, the information without the comfort.
"I thought you'd tell me not to read too much into it," she said.
"I thought about it," he said. "But you've been operating at high capacity for three months with very little — you've been very accurate about everything. If you've decided to believe this one thing, I think that's your business."
She looked at him.
He looked at the slope.
"Again," he said.
She went again.
She thought about this, on the slope — the specific calibration of what he had said, the decision embedded in it. She had come to understand that Silas's silences and his speech were both deliberate, that the choice between them was never accidental.
He had chosen to let her have this one thing.
She thought: that was kind.
She thought: he doesn't do things accidentally.
She thought: file it.
She went again.
---
At the hospital that afternoon, Jonas's nurse — the one on the afternoon shift, the one Maren had developed a working relationship with over three months — mentioned the reading from the previous night.
"We noted it," she said. "It's within the range we see with responsiveness fluctuations. We're watching it."
"What does watching it mean?" Maren said.
"It means if we see it again, consistently, it changes the picture. One instance is data. A pattern is information."
Maren nodded. She understood the distinction. She had been applying it to the investigation for months.
"What would a pattern look like?" she said.
"Repeated responses to specific stimuli. Voice, touch, familiar sounds." The nurse looked at her with the careful directness of someone who had learned to give accurate information without false hope. "Keep doing what you're doing. Talking to him. Being present."
Maren went back to the chair.
She took his hand.
"The nurse said keep talking," she said.
The machines.
"I've been talking for three months," she said. "I have a lot of things left to say. I have the whole investigation to finish telling you about. I have — I have a lot." She paused. "So you're going to have to give me enough time to finish."
She held his hand.
She thought about the monitor reading. About one instance being data and a pattern being information.
She thought: I'll make you a pattern.
She thought: I'll give you so much data it becomes inevitable.
She stayed until visiting hours ended.
On the way out she passed Silas in the corridor — he had timed his arrival for after her usual departure, as always, but she was leaving late.
They stood in the corridor.
"The reading," she said.
He looked at her.
"I'm going to keep talking to him," she said. "The nurse says consistent stimuli might build a pattern."
"Yes," he said.
"You've been talking to him too," she said. "When you visit."
He was quiet.
"I'm not asking about what you say," she said. "I'm just — you should know it might matter. The consistency of it. Multiple voices."
He held her gaze.
"I know," he said.
She nodded.
She went.
He went in.
Outside the hospital the night was very cold, the stars clear, the mountain dark above the treeline. She sat in her car for a moment before starting it, looking at the stars, thinking about patterns and data and the particular arithmetic of hope she had been practicing for three months.
She was getting better at it.
She was going to need to be better still.
She started the car.
She drove home.
Tomorrow there was another stage.
There was always another stage.
She went.
---
Three days later, Jonas's monitoring showed the reading again.
Same type — a small shift in the responsiveness indicators, lasting approximately forty seconds, then returning to baseline. She was in the room when it happened. She was talking.
She was talking about the Karl Brennan research — what Silas had found, the pre-release oversight timeline, the specific gap between the certification completion and the first field deployment. She was talking in the even, reportorial way she had developed, saying the things she would have said to anyone who was listening and trying to understand.
The reading happened in the middle of a sentence.
She did not stop the sentence. She finished it. Then she looked at the monitor.
She called the nurse.
The nurse noted it in the chart. Mentioned it to the doctor on rounds. The doctor looked at the data, looked at Maren, and said — with the careful accuracy she had come to rely on: "This is interesting. It's not conclusive. But it's interesting."
Maren sat with interesting for the rest of the afternoon.
She called Luka.
"Two instances," she said.
"When?"
"Three days apart. Both when I was talking."
He was quiet. She heard him doing what he did when he processed information — the specific silence of clinical thinking.
"What were you talking about?" he said.
"The investigation. The technical details."
"Not — personal things?"
She thought about this. "I talk about personal things too. But both instances were during the investigation details."
He was quiet again.
"That's—" He stopped. Started again. "That's interesting data. It might mean he's tracking. Processing." Another pause. "Or it might be coincidence."
"I know," she said. "The doctor said interesting but not conclusive."
"Keep a log," Luka said. "Time, what you were talking about, what the reading was. If there's a pattern, that's something real to work with."
She had already started the log.
She had known she would start the log before she called him.
She just needed to hear someone else say it was the right thing to do.
"Luka," she said.
"Yeah."
"Is it possible he's—" She stopped.
"Coming back?" he said. Gently. "It's possible. It's too early to say. It's possible."
She looked at Jonas across the room.
She thought: possible.
She thought: that is enough.
She thought: I'm going to keep talking.
She thought: I have so much left to say.
She said goodbye to Luka.
She went back to the chair.
She held Jonas's hand.
She started talking again.
---
She told Silas that evening.
They were at Ravenline, working through the stage two terrain analysis, and she mentioned it in the same way she had mentioned it that morning — as information, in the middle of other information, filed in its appropriate place.
He listened.
When she finished he said: "How certain are you that it corresponds to what you were saying?"
"Two instances in three days, both during the investigation details. Not certain. Possibly meaningful."
He nodded.
"You're keeping a log," he said.
"Of course."
He looked at the stage two profile on the table. Then back at her. "That's good news," he said. Simply.
She looked at him.
"It might not be," she said.
"It might not be," he agreed. "But if it is, it's good." He held her gaze. "It's okay to believe it might be good."
She thought about what he had said that morning — that she had been operating accurately and if she had decided to believe this one thing, it was her business.
He was consistent about this. Allowing her the things that were hers to have without requiring her to justify them.
She thought: he's careful about what he allows himself.
She thought: and generous about what he allows other people.
She thought: file it.
"Stage two," she said.
"Stage two," he confirmed.
They worked.
Outside the window, the mountain was dark, the stars visible between the cloud. The wind was picking up — tomorrow would be cold, the kind that changed how the snow behaved, that required adjustments she had learned to make.
She knew how to adjust.
She had been adjusting for four months.
She was still here.
That was the evidence.
She worked.
---
The log she kept was simple.
Date. Time. Duration of session. Subject matter. Monitor reading — the specific number, the deviation from baseline, how long it lasted before returning.
By the end of the first week of logging, she had four entries. Three showed readings. Two were during investigation details. One was during a personal memory — she had been talking about a run they had done together two winters ago, a long one on the back side of the mountain, the kind of day that was too good to waste indoors.
She added a column: subject matter category.
Investigation. Personal. Training. General.
She was building data.
She was always building data.
She brought the log to Luka on a Saturday morning and they sat at his kitchen table and looked at it together, the same way they had sat at kitchen tables their whole lives and looked at things that needed to be looked at together.
"Four instances," he said.
"In eight days."
"Three of them during conversation."
"Yes."
He turned the notebook so he could read the numbers more easily. "The deviation magnitude is consistent. It's not random variation — it's a specific pattern of response."
"That's what I thought."
He looked at her. "You should show this to his doctor."
"I'm seeing her Monday."
"Good." He handed the notebook back. "This is real data, Maren. This is something."
She closed the notebook.
She thought: something.
She thought: I'll take something.
She thought: Jonas, I'm building your pattern.
She thought: come back for it.
---
She was at the hospital that evening when Jonas's monitoring produced the clearest reading yet.
She had been talking for forty minutes — moving through the week, stage one, Karl Brennan, Ilya Voss and his belated honesty, the second stage terrain profile, Silas and the paper map that she still had not told Jonas about because it seemed like the kind of detail that would require explanation she was not ready to give.
She had been talking about the technical tent. About Marco and the final adjustment. About who Karl Brennan was and what his oversight role meant for the chain of decisions that had led to her binding.
The monitor shifted.
Not a small shift this time — still within the range the doctor described as fluctuation, not an alarm, not emergency. But the deviation was larger than any of the previous instances, and it lasted longer, and when it peaked she looked at Jonas and said his name.
She said it once.
The monitor held the reading for another ten seconds. Then began returning toward baseline.
She sat very still.
She did not move for a long time.
Then she placed her hand over his, both of hers, and she said, quietly, into the room: "I know you can hear me."
She did not know if that was true.
She was going to believe it was true.
She thought: come back.
She thought: I'm still here.
She thought: so are you.
The monitoring returned to baseline.
The machines continued.
She stayed until midnight.
She left the scarf again.
She drove home under the stars.
She was still here.
She always came back.
