Jonas stopped in the middle of a sentence.
They were talking about flowers — specifically, whether flowers were necessary at all, or whether the kind of wedding they were planning was the kind that could exist without them. Maren had been saying something about how Nivora in winter already had a visual quality that didn't need adding to, and Jonas had been agreeing, and then he had stopped.
Not because she had said something wrong. She had been watching him do this for three weeks and she still could not identify the trigger. He simply stopped, sometimes mid-sentence, sometimes mid-gesture, sometimes just mid-existing in the room. He would look at something — the window, the table, his own hands — and he would be somewhere else for a moment. Then he would come back and continue as if the gap had not happened.
She said: "Are you okay?"
He said: "Fine." Then, catching himself: "I'm fine."
She said: "You stopped."
He said: "I was thinking."
She said: "About flowers?"
He said: "About other things."
She looked at him.
He looked back — the direct look, the one that had become more common since he came back, the one that saw things clearly and made no pretense of not seeing them. It was one of the things that had changed. He had always seen clearly; now he also looked directly, without the social management that most people applied to difficult seeing.
He said: "I'm okay. I'm just thinking through some things."
She said: "Tell me."
He said: "Not yet." He looked at the wedding planning notes on the table. "The flowers. Can we come back to the flowers?"
She said: "Yes."
They came back to the flowers.
She did not push.
She had learned this over a year of Jonas — the difference between when to push and when to let the thing find its own time. He would tell her. He told her everything eventually.
She watched him through the rest of the planning session and noted: he was fully present when they talked about specifics — the venue, the guest list, the practical logistics. He stopped when the conversation turned to the experience of it, the meaning of it, the what it represents.
She filed this and continued.
---
That evening he watched footage.
She came home to find him in front of the laptop — not the project footage, the pre-White Arc archive. She recognized the file name from the top of the screen. She had seen him open it twice before in the past three weeks.
She stood at the doorway and watched him watch himself.
The footage was from a Tuesday afternoon in Nivora — she recognized it, had been there. He was on the training slope, doing what he did on the training slope before White Arc: moving through terrain with the easy fluency of a body that had never been asked to think about moving.
She watched him watch himself move.
His face in the present was still. Not sad exactly. Something more like: recognition without possession. The face of someone looking at a person they know very well who is not quite them.
She did not go in.
She went to the kitchen and made tea and gave him the time the footage required.
When he came out he said: "You're making tea."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "I was watching footage."
She said: "I know. I saw."
He looked at her.
She said: "Are you going to tell me what you're thinking about?"
He said: "Not tonight." He came to the kitchen — the specific navigation of the flat that he had built over months, the wheelchair and the space between things, all of it known now. He came to where she was. He said: "Soon. I need to get a few more things clear first."
She said: "Okay."
He said: "You're not worried."
She said: "I'm attentive. That's different."
He looked at her.
She said: "I know you. When you're ready you'll tell me. I'm here for when you're ready."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "Yes."
She handed him the tea.
They stood in the kitchen in the specific warmth of the flat in winter, the mountain outside doing what it did, and she thought: he is working through something. He is working through it in the way he works through everything — by sitting with it, by examining it from every angle, by not rushing to a conclusion before he understands the mechanism.
She thought: I know how to wait for him.
She thought: I have been waiting for him for a long time.
I am still here.
---
She called Luka the next morning.
He was between sessions. He answered with the efficiency of someone who gave attention in proportion to what the situation required.
She said: "Jonas is watching old footage of himself."
Luka said: "Pre-accident?"
She said: "Yes. The training slopes. Before White Arc."
He was quiet for a moment.
She said: "He stops in the middle of things. Not often. But I've noticed it three weeks in a row."
Luka said: "What kind of things does he stop in the middle of?"
She described it — the wedding planning, the meaning-related conversations, the gap that appeared and then closed.
Luka said: "This is a recognized phase. When the medical situation stabilizes and the physical rehabilitation reaches a plateau, the psychological work intensifies. He's been asking himself practical questions for a year. He's starting to ask the larger ones."
She said: "Which questions?"
Luka said: "Who he is now. Whether who he is now is the person he thought he was. Whether what he wants is still what he wants." A pause. "These are good questions. They mean he's well enough to ask them."
She said: "What do I do?"
He said: "What you're already doing. Be present. Don't rush him. Don't resolve it for him — he has to resolve it himself."
She said: "And if it affects the wedding?"
Luka said: "It won't. But if it does, that's information." He paused. "Maren. He loves you. He proposed to you. Whatever he's working through, it's not about that."
She said: "I know."
She did know.
She thought: I know him.
She thought: I am waiting.
She thought: I am here.
She was.
---
She told Silas in a message that week — not a call, just a message: *Jonas is working through something. Not a crisis. Just the large questions.*
Silas responded: *I know. He called me.*
She: *He called you?*
Silas: *Yes. He told me he was watching old footage.*
She sat with this. Jonas had called Silas before telling her — not hiding it from her, just finding Silas first for the specific thing Silas could give.
She: *What did you tell him?*
Silas: *I'll tell you when the time is right. It's his thing to tell you.*
She understood. Silas had given Jonas something, and Jonas would bring it to her when he was ready. This was the correct sequence.
She: *Okay.*
Silas: *He's okay. I promise.*
She: *I know he is.*
A pause. Then Silas: *You sound more sure than worried.*
She: *I am.*
Silas: *Good.*
She put the phone down.
She went to the hospital — not to visit Jonas, he was in the rehabilitation flat now. To the advisory board preparatory session, which was held in the hospital's conference room because that was where Dr. Marr had his office.
She walked through the corridor she had walked a hundred times.
She thought: this place is different now.
She thought: Jonas walked out of here. He did not walk — he rolled, and then he walked with support, and now he lives in a flat and nails footage and is working through large questions.
She thought: the corridor is the same. Everything else has changed.
She walked.
She went to the meeting.
She worked.
She was here.
Jonas was working through the large questions.
Silas knew about it.
She was here for whenever Jonas was ready.
That was the shape.
That was right.
---
He told her on a Sunday.
Not all of it — the most important part. They were sitting at the table after breakfast, the dishes still between them, the morning light doing what it did in the flat at this hour. He said: "I need to tell you something I've been holding."
She said: "Okay."
He said: "When I watch the footage — the old footage — I see someone who moved a certain way. Who I was before." He looked at his hands. "And I look at myself now and I think: are these the same person. And if they're not — am I still the person you said yes to."
She listened.
He said: "I know the logical answer. I know Luka would say the psychological answer. I know Silas—" He stopped. "Silas already told me his answer."
She said: "What did Silas say?"
He said: "He said I was asking the wrong question. That the right question isn't whether I'm the same person. It's whether the person sitting here is Jonas."
She looked at him.
He said: "And he said yes."
She said: "He's right."
He said: "I know he's right. But I needed to hear it from you too."
She said: "You are Jonas. You are the person I said yes to."
He looked at her.
She said: "Not because you're the same as the footage. Because you are the person I know. The person who calls Silas at the right moment and lets himself be told the right thing. The person who makes footage of rehabilitation courtyards and northeast corners. The person who said *if you go slowly, I'll go with you.* That person is you."
He held her gaze.
She said: "I said yes to you. Not to how you moved on a slope."
He was quiet for a long time.
Then he said: "Okay."
She said: "Okay?"
He said: "Okay." A pause. "Thank you."
She reached across the dishes and held his hand.
She thought: here.
She thought: I am exactly here.
She thought: this is Jonas.
She was glad.
She stayed.

The wedding planning resumed the following week.
Not as a different thing — as the same thing, with the large question having been asked and answered and filed in the permanent collection where large questions went when they had been properly addressed.
They decided against flowers. Maren had been right about Nivora in winter already having the visual quality that didn't need adding to. Jonas agreed, then immediately began thinking about the light in the venue at the time of year and how he would document it.
She said: "You're going to film the wedding."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "You're going to be in the wedding and film it."
He said: "Luka is going to hold the camera during the ceremony. I've already asked him."
She stared at him.
He said: "He said yes."
She said: "You planned this without telling me."
He said: "I'm telling you now."
She said: "That is very you."
He said: "Yes. Do you mind?"
She thought about Luka holding a camera. About Jonas having already worked out the logistics of documenting his own wedding.
She said: "No. I don't mind."
He said: "Good."
She looked at him across the table.
She thought: this is Jonas.
She thought: this is exactly Jonas.
She thought: I know him.
She thought: I said yes to the right person.
She thought: yes.
She held his hand.
She was here.
Everything was in its right place.
The flowers were cancelled.
The wedding was planned.
The large question had been asked and answered.
They continued.
---
She told Silas about the Sunday conversation in a message.
She did not tell him the details — Jonas had told Silas his part, she was telling Silas her part, and she trusted that Silas would hold both correctly.
She wrote: *He told me what he was working through. We talked. He's okay.*
Silas: *I know. He told me.*
She: *He told you after?*
Silas: *Yes. He called to say he'd talked to you.*
She sat with this — Jonas calling Silas to report that the conversation had happened. The specific shape of their friendship, how Jonas moved through things and needed Silas to know when the things resolved.
She: *What did he say?*
Silas: *He said you told him he was Jonas. He said: obviously. I told him he was being dense.*
She laughed.
She: *That sounds like you.*
Silas: *He said the same thing.*
She: *He loves you.*
A pause. Then: *I know.*
She: *I mean it as — I mean it as a good thing. He's lucky.*
Silas: *Yes. So am I.*
She: *See you at the wedding.*
Silas: *See you at the wedding.*
She put the phone down.
She looked at the mountain.
She thought: both of them know.
She thought: both of them are okay.
She thought: we are all going to be okay.
She thought: yes.
She thought: we already are.
She was here.
Everything was in its right place.
She was glad.
