Silas saw the post at seven in the morning, Auremont time.
He had been making coffee. His phone was on the counter and the notification appeared — Jonas's account, which he followed, which had been quiet for most of the past year and had been active again since Jonas came back to himself. He picked up the phone.
He watched the four minutes.
He watched them through to the end.
He put the phone face-down on the counter.
He poured his coffee.
He picked the phone back up.
He watched the four minutes again.
She said yes three times. He had not known that until now. Three times, each one its own thing — the first surprise, the second certainty, the third something that was past both of those, something that was just the word itself, said because it was true.
He put the phone down.
He drank his coffee.
He looked at the Auremont mountains outside the window.
He thought: there they are.
He thought: that is what it looks like.
He thought: yes.
He thought: that is the word for it.
He thought: good.
He thought: that is the word for what I feel.
He thought: actually good.
He set the coffee down.
He picked up his phone.
He opened Instagram.
He typed a comment: *Congratulations.*
He looked at it.
He deleted it.
He thought: Jonas already knows. Maren already knows. A comment is not the right channel for what I want to say.
He put the phone down.
He thought: I will call Jonas.
He thought: not today.
He thought: soon.
He thought: before the wedding, whenever that is.
He went to the training slope.
He worked with Petra — the second qualifier was three weeks away, the preparation in its final phase. She was ready. He had been telling her she was ready for two weeks. She was beginning to believe him, which was the sign that she actually was.
At the end of the session she said: "You seem different today."
He said: "Different how?"
She said: "Settled."
He thought about this. About the four minutes. About *she said yes* three times. About the specific quality of watching something arrive at its right conclusion — not his conclusion, the right one.
He said: "Yes. Settled."
She said: "Good different or bad different?"
He said: "Good."
She said: "Okay."
She went to put her equipment away.
He stood at the observation position and looked at the Auremont terrain — the mountain he had been mapping for months, whose annotated pages were accumulating in the careful notation system he had developed over fifteen years of mapping places.
He thought: she said yes.
He thought: it was always going toward that.
He thought: I knew.
He thought: I was always glad of that. Even when it was hard. Even when it cost something.
He thought: I am still glad.
He thought: that is the right thing to feel.
He took out his phone.
He opened Jonas's post.
He typed a new comment: *About time.*
He looked at it.
He sent it.
He put the phone away.
He went back to work.
---
Jonas called him that evening.
He answered on the second ring.
Jonas said: "I saw your comment."
Silas said: "Yes."
Jonas said: "About time."
Silas said: "Yes."
Jonas said: "We've been together for three years."
Silas said: "Hence about time."
Jonas made the sound that was the full laugh arriving. "You could have said congratulations."
Silas said: "About time is more accurate."
Jonas: "Is it?"
Silas: "Yes. You should have proposed earlier."
Jonas: "I was in a coma."
Silas: "For nine months. You had time after."
Jonas was laughing — the full version, the one Silas had heard ten thousand times, the one that had been suspended for nine months and was back now, all the way back.
Silas thought: there it is.
He thought: there he is.
He thought: all the way back.
He said: "Congratulations. Both of you."
Jonas said: "Thank you."
A pause.
Jonas said: "Will you come to the wedding?"
Silas said: "Yes."
Jonas said: "You didn't hesitate."
Silas said: "No."
Jonas said: "Good."
Silas said: "When?"
Jonas said: "We haven't set a date. Summer, probably. When I'm further along." A pause. "When things are — when we're ready."
Silas said: "Tell me when you know."
Jonas said: "I will."
They talked for another while — about Petra, about the qualifier, about the northeast corner footage and what Jonas was doing with it in the spring project. The ordinary things, the things that were simply the texture of being friends.
When they said goodnight Jonas said: "I'm glad you're okay."
Silas said: "I am."
Jonas said: "I know. I can hear it."
Silas said: "Yes."
Jonas said goodnight.
Silas put the phone down.
He looked at the mountains outside.
He thought: the wedding.
He thought: summer.
He thought: yes.
He thought: I will be there.
He thought: that is right.
He thought: I will be glad to be there.
He was glad already.
He went to bed.
He slept well.
He was here.
Everything was in its right place.
He was exactly where he needed to be.
He was glad.
---
She called him the day after Jonas called him.
She said: "He told me you said *about time.*"
He said: "Yes."
She said: "Was that the comment you deleted first?"
He was quiet.
She said: "I saw you had a comment and then it disappeared."
He said: "Congratulations."
She said: "That's what you wrote first."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "And then you changed it to about time."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "Why?"
He said: "Because *about time* was more accurate."
She was quiet for a moment.
Then she said: "Thank you."
He said: "You don't have to thank me."
She said: "For the comment. And for everything before the comment."
He said: "You've thanked me enough."
She said: "I know. I'm doing it again."
He said: "Okay."
She said: "The wedding. Jonas said he invited you."
He said: "Yes. I said yes."
She said: "Good."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "I mean it. Good."
He said: "I know you mean it."
She said: "Goodnight, Silas."
He said: "Goodnight. And — congratulations."
She said: "Thank you."
He put the phone down.
He thought: the wedding.
He thought: summer.
He thought: I will go.
He thought: I will be glad.
He thought: I am already glad.
He worked on the fifteenth map.
He annotated what was there.
He was here.
This was the terrain he had chosen.
He was learning it.
He would keep learning it.
That was the shape.
That was right.

The winter came to Nivora in December.
Not the transitional cold of October and November — the real winter, the committed version, the one that settled into the valley and stayed. The mountain received it. The slopes whitened. The equipment shops stocked the season's inventory. The cable car ran on its winter schedule.
Maren walked to the hospital on the first real winter morning and the cold received her the way cold did in Nivora: without particular cruelty, just: this is what it is here.
She walked.
She thought about the offline gathering — another winter, years ago, a slope and a crowd and a comment about a crossfall. The beginning.
She thought about all the winters since.
She thought: this winter is different.
She thought: I am going toward something I have already arrived at.
She thought: I have the ring.
She thought: Jonas is waiting.
She thought: Silas is in Auremont with the fifteenth map and before winter he had been here and it had been right.
She thought: the consulting structure is real. The advisory board is real. The work is real.
She thought: everything is in its right place.
She walked.
The mountain was beside her the whole way — the familiar silhouette, the one she had known her whole life, the one that had been the background for everything.
She thought: I know this mountain.
She thought: I know what's on it and what it does to people and how to read it and when to commit.
She thought: I know a lot of things now that I did not know.
She thought: I learned them.
She thought: the learning is in the permanent collection.
She thought: all of it.
She walked.
She arrived.
She went in.
She went down the corridor.
She went into the room.
Jonas looked up.
He said: "You walked."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "How was it?"
She said: "Cold. Good."
He said: "The mountain?"
She said: "There. As always."
He said: "Yes."
She sat in the chair.
She held his hand.
She thought: I am here.
She thought: I have always been coming here.
She thought: I am exactly here.
She was.
She stayed.
She always stayed.
She always came back.
That was the shape.
That was right.
That was exactly right.
---
The comment — *about time* — got twelve replies.
Most of them were from people who followed Jonas's account and did not know who Silas was. One of them was Jonas himself: *took you long enough to say something.* One of them was Noa: *Congratulations Maren.* One was from Luka, which surprised Maren because she had not known Luka followed Jonas's Instagram, which then did not surprise her at all.
She screenshotted the exchange.
She sent it to Silas.
He replied in forty seconds: *Why.*
She: *For your permanent collection.*
He was quiet for a moment. Then: *Okay.*
She put her phone away.
She was at the advisory board's second official meeting — a video call, the members from four different countries, the work of building a structure that would outlast the specific incident that had created the need for it.
She was good at this.
She had been good at it from the beginning — the systematic attention, the building from what was actually there, the translation of complex technical information into language that served the people who needed it.
She was exactly right for this.
After the call she sat at the table in the cabin and worked.
She thought about the permanent collection.
She thought: everything that is real goes there.
She thought: the investigation. The training. The hospital visits. The proposal. Silas's *about time.* Jonas's laugh. Noa's four years on the circuit and the documentation she kept just in case. Luka's presence on Instagram, quiet and there.
She thought: all of it.
She thought: it is a rich collection.
She thought: I am glad.
She worked.
She was here.
She was building the right things.
The winter was outside.
The mountain was there.
Everything was in its right place.
She thought: yes.
She thought: exactly.
She was exactly where she needed to be.
She had always been getting here.
She was here.
---
She went to the hospital that evening.
Jonas was working on the spring project — the northeast corner footage incorporated into something larger now, the project expanding as the material found its shape.
He looked up when she came in.
He said: "The advisory board call?"
She said: "Good. Three new cases to review from the circuit."
He said: "Already."
She said: "The structure is working. Riders are using the checklist. They're finding things they have a right to know and didn't."
He said: "Good."
She sat in the chair.
She said: "Silas saw the comment exchange."
He said: "I know. I saw."
She said: "He said *for your permanent collection.*"
Jonas said: "He would say that."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "I want to show him the spring project. When it's done."
She said: "Send it to him."
He said: "I want to show him. In person." He looked at the tablet. "The wedding."
She said: "Summer."
He said: "Yes. He'll be there."
She said: "He said yes immediately."
He said: "I know." A pause. "That's Silas."
She said: "Yes."
She held his hand.
She thought: the wedding.
She thought: summer.
She thought: Silas will be there.
She thought: Jonas's laugh and Silas's *about time* and the northeast corner footage and the checklist and the advisory board and the permanent collection.
She thought: all of it.
She thought: I am surrounded by people who pay attention and build things and keep what is real.
She thought: I am one of those people now.
She had been, she realized, for a while.
She held his hand.
She thought: I know where I am.
She thought: I am exactly here.
She thought: yes.
She was.
She stayed until the nurse came.
She drove home.
The winter was on the mountain.
The mountain was where it always was.
She was here.
She thought: this is the shape.
She thought: I know it.
She thought: it is exactly right.
She went inside.
She worked on the checklist.
She thought: summer.
