The rider's name was Petra, and she was seventeen, and she skied like someone who had never been told there was a right way to do it.
Silas watched her from the observer position on the Auremont training slope — watched the way she read the terrain, the small adjustments that happened before she was conscious of making them, the conversation between her body and the snow that looked like nothing from the outside and was everything from the inside.
He had seen this before.
He had seen it in Maren, at Ravenline, in the months when the training had stripped away the management layer and what was underneath had become visible. He had seen it, long before that, in Jonas on a slope outside Nivora when they were teenagers and Jonas had skied the way he filmed — as if the mountain were telling him something and he were simply responding.
He watched Petra and thought: the same category.
He thought: you can't teach this. You can only recognize it and build around it.
He thought about the first time he had seen Maren ski — the offline gathering, the line she chose, the way the crossfall had been correct in her body before it was correct in her mind. He had looked for a long time before he moved on.
He thought about Jonas saying: *she doesn't ski like someone following someone else's line.*
He thought: no. She didn't.
He thought: she also won stage four.
He called Petra to the bottom.
He said: "The middle section. You're making a decision in your left shoulder that you're not aware of."
She said: "What decision?"
He said: "Show me what you think you're doing through the middle section."
She described it.
He said: "Now I'll show you what you're actually doing."
He described the shoulder movement — the specific mechanism, the compensation she had developed, the way it was working and how it could work better.
She listened with the intensity of someone who recognized that the information was accurate and wanted to receive all of it.
He thought: she reminds me of Maren.
He thought: not the same. Different kind. But the same category of taking information seriously and doing something with it.
He said: "Again."
She went again.
The shoulder movement was different. Better.
He said: "Better."
She said: "How much better?"
He thought about Maren saying that after stage two. He almost smiled.
He said: "Enough to continue."
She went again.
He watched.
After the session he sat at the table in the training room and worked on the map annotation — the east-facing slope mechanism he had figured out at two in the morning, now properly recorded. He added a note about Petra: natural terrain reading, left shoulder compensation, corrected in session three.
He thought about Jonas.
He took out his phone.
He sent Jonas a message: *The terrain here has a rider who skis like you used to.*
Jonas responded in ten minutes: *Like me or like you?*
Silas: *Like you. Instinct. No management layer.*
Jonas: *Is she good?*
Silas: *Very. Remind me of something.*
A pause. Then Jonas: *You watched Maren like that. From the observer position.*
Silas: *Yes.*
Jonas: *For months.*
Silas: *Yes.*
A longer pause. Then: *She won stage four.*
Silas: *Yes.*
Jonas: *You trained her well.*
Silas thought about this. About the four months of Ravenline, the drilling, the left line, the things he had built and the things he had only been present for while she found them herself.
He typed: *She trained herself. I provided the structure.*
Jonas: *That's the job though.*
Silas: *Yes.*
Jonas: *You're good at it.*
Silas: *I know.*
He could hear Jonas laughing at that — the full version, the one he had heard ten thousand times and would hear many more times, starting from whenever Jonas came back to terrain Silas could reach.
He put the phone down.
He annotated the map.
He was here.
This was the work.
He was good at it.
He went back to work. ---
He sent Jonas a message on a Sunday: *The rider I told you about. She's getting better.*
Jonas responded: *How much better?*
Silas: *Stage-ready. Maybe two months.*
Jonas: *You said that about Maren.*
Silas: *I said she was ready when she was ready.*
Jonas: *Same thing.*
Silas thought about this. About the difference between projecting a timeline and recognizing when the readiness was present. He had not told Maren she was stage-ready until she was — the progression had been genuine, the assessment at each stage accurate.
He typed: *Yes. Same thing.*
Jonas: *You're good at that. Seeing when people are ready.*
Silas thought about all the things he had seen over the years — riders, in technical terms, when the technique was consolidated enough for the next challenge. He thought about Jonas at nineteen, on the unauthorized slope, already past several readiness thresholds he had not acknowledged to himself yet. He thought about Maren in the upper section, the morning she had skied it without managing, without him telling her that this was the morning it would happen.
He typed: *I pay attention.*
Jonas: *That's why.*
A pause. Then: *Silas.*
Silas: *Yes.*
Jonas: *Thank you. For the photograph. For the project.*
Silas thought about sending the photograph — Jonas asking for it, him finding it in the folder, sending it without commentary. He had not told Maren he was sending it. That had been correct. It had been between him and Jonas.
He typed: *You built something good with it.*
Jonas: *The good thing was already there. I just pointed a camera at it.*
Silas sat with this.
He thought: yes.
He thought: that is what Jonas does.
He thought: the good thing was already there.
He typed: *Yes. It was.*
Jonas: *Come before winter. I want to show you something.*
Silas: *Before winter.*
Jonas: *I mean it.*
Silas: *I know you mean it.*
Jonas: *Good.*
He put the phone down.
He looked at the Auremont terrain outside the window — the specific shapes of it, familiar now, the annotations of the fifteenth map building toward completeness.
He thought: the good thing was already there.
He thought: he always finds it.
He thought: before winter.
He went back to the map.
He added the annotation about Petra and the left shoulder — corrected and consolidated, the training holding.
He was here.
The terrain was being mapped.
He was ready for what came next.
---
Petra won her first regional qualifier in October.
Not first place — third, which was better than anyone at the Institute had projected for her first regional competition. She came down the slope and looked at the board and looked at Silas and said: "How much better?"
He said: "Third."
She said: "How much better than third could I have been?"
He thought about the left shoulder. About the three sessions it had taken to correct it. About the specific additional speed she would have had if the correction had been made two months earlier.
He said: "Second. Maybe second."
She said: "Next time."
He said: "Yes. Next time."
She went to call her family.
He stood at the observation position and thought about third place in a regional qualifier and the gap between third and second and what it took to close it.
He thought about Maren at stage three, four-tenths behind Elise.
He thought about Maren at stage four: first.
He thought: the gap closes when the technical foundation is right and the mental foundation is right and the rider trusts both.
He thought: Petra is getting there.
He thought: she will get there.
He sent Maren a message: *My rider placed third in her first regional qualifier.*
She responded in eight minutes: *How much better could she have been?*
He almost smiled.
He typed: *Second, maybe. The left shoulder.*
She: *You'll fix it.*
He: *Already fixed. She needs to consolidate it under race conditions.*
She: *How many races?*
He: *Two or three.*
She: *She'll get there.*
He: *Yes.*
A pause. Then: *Congratulations.*
He: *It's her accomplishment.*
She: *And yours. You trained her.*
He thought about this. About the difference between what the rider built and what the coach provided. About what he had told Maren — that she had trained herself, that he had provided the structure.
He typed: *I provided the structure. She built it.*
She: *You always say that.*
He: *It's always true.*
She: *Yes.* A pause. *It's also true that you're very good at the structure.*
He looked at this message for a moment.
He typed: *I know.*
She: *Good.*
He put the phone down.
He went back to the map.
He annotated the regional qualifier — Petra, third place, left shoulder consolidated, next development priority identified.
He worked.
He was here.
The terrain was being learned.
He was learning it well.
That was the right thing.
---
He thought, in the evenings, about what next winter would look like.
Not this winter — next. The one after Auremont's first full season. He had already been asked whether he wanted to continue for a second year. He was considering it. The terrain was still being mapped. The riders were still in development. The work had the quality of something worth continuing.
He thought about visiting Nivora before winter — the promise to Jonas, to Maren. He had a window in late October, after the Auremont season wrapped and before the next one began. Three days, four.
He thought: three or four days in Nivora.
He thought: Jonas's project.
He thought: Maren and the consulting structure and Noa and the advisory board.
He thought: the mountain, which he had grown up knowing, which looked different from Auremont's mountains, which he would see again for the first time since leaving.
He thought: I am ready for that.
He sent Jonas a message: *Late October. Four days.*
Jonas responded in three minutes: *Good. I'll tell Maren.*
Silas: *I can tell her.*
Jonas: *I know. I'm telling her.*
Silas thought about this — Jonas telling Maren, the specific choice of that.
He typed: *Okay.*
Jonas: *She'll be pleased.*
Silas thought: yes.
He typed: *I know.*
He put the phone down.
He looked at the Auremont mountains.
He thought: late October.
He thought: before winter.
He thought: I'll see the mountain again.
He thought: that is the right thing.
He worked.
He annotated the map.
He was here.
Late October was coming.
He was ready.
---
She told Jonas that evening.
He listened.
When she finished he said: "Good."
She said: "One word."
He said: "It's the right word."
She held his hand.
She thought: I know where I am.
She thought: I am exactly here.
She stayed until late.
She drove home.
She was here.
Everything was in its right place.
She was exactly where she needed to be.
She was glad.
---
In the evenings at Auremont, he had taken to walking.
Not for exercise — he had the slope for that. Walking in the way that had no purpose beyond the movement itself, the specific thinking-without-thinking that happened when the body was occupied and the mind could do what it needed without direction.
He walked through the Auremont town center most evenings — the streets that were beginning to feel familiar, the corners he recognized, the specific quality of the mountain light at this latitude and altitude. He was building a familiarity that was different from knowing — the beginning of knowing, the stage before the annotations.
He thought about Jonas and Maren during these walks.
Not obsessively — in the way that real things returned, without agenda, as part of the mind's ongoing inventory of what mattered.
He thought: they are okay.
He thought: Jonas is back.
He thought: Maren is building something real.
He thought: Silas is here, in Auremont, learning new terrain.
He thought: all of those things are true.
He walked.
He thought about Petra — her qualifier in three weeks, the preparation in its final phase. She was ready. He had been building toward this since August. The work was complete. What remained was for her to trust what she had built.
He thought: that is always the last thing.
He thought: trusting what you built.
He thought: she will get there.
He walked.
He thought: the map is nearly complete.
He thought: next season will require a new one.
He walked back to the apartment.
He sat at the table.
He annotated the fifteenth map.
He added a note about the walking routes — the specific corners, the quality of the light at this hour, the things he had learned that would need updating as the seasons changed.
He worked.
He was here.
He was learning the terrain.
He was building the map.
He was going to be okay.
He thought: yes.
He was.
