Four years ago, Iris Wren buried her husband and learned to carry that loss quietly. She raises their son Eli alone in the coastal New England town of Oakhaven, restoring other people's damaged things for a living, building a life small enough to manage and wide enough to love.
She did not expect Rowan Mercer to walk back into it.
He does not remember her. He does not remember Oakhaven, their two years together, or the garden where he once asked her to stay. He arrives as the lead architect on the Blackwood Manor restoration project, a stranger with her husband's face and an unnerving habit of looking at her like he is trying to remember something just out of reach.
Iris accepts the subcontract for Eli's sake, builds her professional walls, and reminds herself that the man standing in front of her is not the man she lost. But Rowan cannot explain why Oakhaven feels like a place that already knows him. He cannot explain why the woman with paint on her hands makes the hollowness in him go quiet. And he cannot explain the four-year-old boy with ash-grey eyes and a left-handed pencil grip who looks at him like a question he does not yet know how to ask.
Some things cannot be restored. They can only be rebuilt. And some things, it turns out, the heart never forgot.
