The GPS failed between stages, on a route to a venue access point that Silas had used before and apparently trusted his memory for more than the satellite.
They had taken separate vehicles to the venue — this was standard, they always arrived separately, but on this particular morning Silas had sent a message that said follow me, the direct route is better, and she had followed, and then the direct route had turned out to require a navigational confidence that the satellite did not share.
They pulled over on a narrow road with mountain on one side and a significant drop on the other. She got out of her car. He was already out of his, looking at his phone with the expression of someone receiving information from a device that was not being cooperative.
"The satellite thinks we're in a lake," he said.
She looked at her own phone. The blue dot was, in fact, positioned over what appeared to be a body of water approximately two kilometers from their current location.
"That's not helpful," she said.
"No."
He went back to his car and came back with a folded piece of paper. Unfolded it. It was a topographic map — annotated, a series of handwritten notes in the margins, the kind of wear that came from being used rather than stored.
She looked at it. Looked at him.
"You have a paper map," she said.
"Obviously," he said, studying the map.
"A paper map of this specific area."
"I have paper maps of most areas I work in. GPS is unreliable in complex terrain."
She looked at the map. It was detailed, accurate, the handwritten annotations marking things a standard map would not — specific sections of road condition, reliable access points in winter, the kinds of notes that accumulated from actually being in places.
"When did you make this?" she said.
"Over several seasons." He traced a route with his finger. "We go back to the main road here, take the lower access track."
"Is the lower access track on the map?"
"Yes."
"And the GPS?"
He looked at her. "Does not know about the lower access track."
She looked at the map. At the handwritten notes. At a man standing on a mountain road with a piece of paper, identifying their position and plotting a route with the calm efficiency of someone doing something that was, to him, entirely ordinary.
"You are the only person I know who would have a paper map," she said.
"I'm the only person you know who plans adequately," he said. He folded the map back up. "Follow me."
She got back in her car.
She followed him down to the main road, along the main road, up the lower access track that was not on any satellite image but was on Silas's annotated paper map, and to the venue access point, which they reached with twelve minutes to spare before the technical briefing.
She sat in her car for a moment after he parked ahead of her.
She had her phone out. She had taken a photograph, on the mountain road — without thinking, the way she had taken the photograph of him laughing over the paper map debate, the same not-thinking impulse. She looked at it now.
He was looking at the map. Profile, three-quarter angle, the light doing what it did on winter mornings in mountain terrain — flat and specific, making everything look exact. He had the expression he had when he was solving a problem: not focused, exactly. More like: receiving. As if the map were saying something and he was listening.
She thought: Jonas would know what to film this as.
She thought: I know what it is even without the camera.
She put her phone away.
She got out of the car and went to the briefing.
She did not examine the photograph again until three days later, when she was looking for something else on her phone and scrolled past it and stopped.
She looked at it for a moment.
She did not delete it.
She went on.
---
After the briefing he said: "The lower access track is better in wet conditions. I'll note the route for the return."
"On the paper map?" she said.
"Yes."
She thought about him adding to the map — a new notation, this route, in the same handwriting as the other annotations.
She said: "How many paper maps do you have?"
He considered this. "Fourteen. Covering the regions I work in regularly."
"Fourteen."
"The mountain terrain changes. You update the maps."
She looked at him.
"You update paper maps," she said.
"Yes."
"How?"
"You go back. You note what's different. You correct the map."
She thought about this.
"That's a lot of going back," she said.
"Yes," he said. "That's how you know where you are."
She looked at him.
He picked up his documentation folder and went to find his observer position for the briefing.
She stood where she was for a moment.
She thought: that is how you know where you are.
She thought: you go back.
She thought: you correct the map.
She went to find her seat.
She was thinking about maps for the rest of the day in the back of her mind, the way you thought about something that had arrived and would not leave yet.
She thought about it at the hospital in the evening, sitting with Jonas.
She thought: you update the map by going back to the places that have changed.
She thought: I've been going back to this place for six months.
She thought: the map has changed considerably.
She held his hand.
She thought: come back and I'll show you the updated version.
She stayed.
The monitor showed two readings. Consistent. Pattern holding.
She stayed until midnight.
She drove home.
She did not delete the photograph.
---
Silas thought about maps that evening.
Not the paper ones specifically — the principle of them. The idea that knowledge of a place required returning to it, correcting what had changed, building a picture that was current rather than assumed.
He had developed this habit early, as a teenager, when he had first started navigating mountain terrain without a guide. He had been wrong about something once — a trail that had changed after a season of heavy snowfall, an assumed route that no longer matched the terrain. He had not been in danger, but he had been wrong, and he had decided then that the cost of being wrong was higher than the cost of going back.
He had been going back ever since.
He thought about this principle as it applied to things that were not maps.
He thought: you have been going back.
He thought: you have been correcting.
He thought: the map of this situation is different from the map of six months ago.
He thought about what the current map showed.
It showed: Maren, in month six of a sustained effort that had not wavered. It showed: the investigation, complete enough now to be meaningful. It showed: the hospital, the monitor readings, the pattern the doctor had described as consistent with meaningful responsiveness.
It showed: Thursday. Dr. Marr. The approach to the end of the thing.
It showed: and then.
He had been living with and then for six months. It was still not a clear image.
He thought: the and then has multiple parts. The investigation ends and goes to someone with authority. The pattern in Jonas's monitoring continues and eventually resolves — in the direction of return, which was the direction the evidence was pointing. And then Jonas returns.
And then.
He thought about the and then that came after Jonas returning.
He had been not thinking about this one specifically. He had been filing it — the folder he was honest enough to call what it was — and continuing.
He thought: you are going to have to think about it eventually.
He thought: not tonight.
He thought: eventually.
He made coffee. He sat at the table. He reviewed the Dr. Marr preparation documents.
He worked.
He was very good at working.
He worked until it was late enough to justify stopping.
The mountain was outside.
He was still here.
That was enough for tonight.
---
Two days before Dr. Marr, Maren went to the hospital at six in the morning.
She did not usually come this early. The morning visits were hard to fit with the training schedule, and she had learned to trust the afternoon hours, the pattern of them, the consistency of showing up at the same time each day.
This morning she could not sleep.
She drove through a Nivora that was not yet awake — the equipment shops dark, the cable car station not yet running, the early light catching the upper slopes in the specific way it caught them before the day arrived and made everything ordinary.
She signed in. Walked the corridor.
She sat in the chair.
She had brought the documentation folder — the full one, everything they had assembled in six months. She had not brought it before. She had kept the hospital separate from the investigation, had not wanted to mix the two, had wanted Jonas's room to remain the place where she reported rather than worked.
But today she brought it.
She laid it on the bed, beside his hand.
"This is everything," she said. "All of it. Six months of work." She looked at his face. "I wanted you to see it. Or be near it. I don't know which is accurate."
She sat with the folder on the bed.
"The DIN setting photograph," she said. "That's your photograph. You're in this file, Jonas. You documented the most important piece of evidence without knowing you were doing it."
She thought about him taking that photograph — the morning light, the angle from above, the particular way he found the shot that showed what needed to be shown. The thing he did for everything he cared about: pointed his camera at it and trusted the footage would be useful.
"It's useful," she said. "You were right to take it."
The machines.
A reading — early morning, not her usual time, the pattern showing up anyway.
She looked at the monitor.
She said: "I know you're in there."
She said: "Two more days. And then I'll have done what I came to do."
She laid her hand on top of the folder, on top of his hand.
She stayed until seven-thirty.
Then she went to Ravenline.
She had two more days of work.
She would do them.
She always did the work.
---
The day before Dr. Marr, Silas said: "We have what we need."
They were at the table, the documentation spread between them, and he had been reviewing the complete package for the third time — not looking for gaps anymore, confirming that the gaps he had identified had been filled.
"Yes," she said.
"Dr. Marr will be able to assess whether the technical case holds."
"And if it does?"
"Then we take it to Dr. Marr's journalist contact. He mentioned one — someone who covers equipment safety in elite sports. Reach, credibility, the right kind of outlet for this."
She looked at the documentation.
She thought: six months ago I was standing in a parking lot with a phone in my hand.
She thought: look at this.
She thought: Jonas, look at this.
She said: "After the journalist."
He looked at her.
"What comes after the journalist," she said. "For you."
He held her gaze.
"Auremont Institute reached out," he said. "A consulting position. Safety analysis and coaching at a high-altitude training center in the Alps." He paused. "I told them I was occupied. They said the position was open-ended."
She looked at him.
"You're considering it," she said.
"I've been considering it for two months."
She thought about this. About Silas in the Alps — the fourteen paper maps, updated for new terrain. The same precision applied to different mountains.
She thought: he would be good there.
She thought: of course he would be good there.
She thought: and then.
"You should go," she said. "If that's what you want."
He looked at her.
"When Jonas comes back," she said. "When this is finished. You should go."
He was very still.
"Yes," he said. Eventually.
"I mean it," she said.
"I know you mean it," he said.
They looked at each other across the documentation.
She thought: there are things I haven't said.
She thought: there are things he hasn't said.
She thought: this is not the moment for them.
She thought: maybe there isn't a moment. Maybe some things are said and some things are held and both of those are the right answer depending on what they are.
She thought: I know what I'm holding.
She thought: I think he does too.
She looked at the documentation.
"Tomorrow," she said.
"Tomorrow," he confirmed.
They worked until evening.
Then she went to the hospital.
Then she went home.
Tomorrow was Dr. Marr.
She was ready.
She had been ready for a long time.
She went to sleep.
---
She did not sleep well.
She lay awake thinking about tomorrow and also about what she had said to Silas — you should go — and whether she meant it the way she had said it, which was: I want good things for you, including the things that take you away from here.
She did mean it that way.
She also meant it the other way, the way she had not said: and if you go, the thing I have been filing for six months will have a clear answer, which is that it ends with the investigation, which is appropriate, which is what was always true.
She thought about the and also she had put back in the folder.
She thought: you are honest with yourself. Be honest.
She was honest.
She thought: there is something there. It is real. It exists alongside the other thing — the love for Jonas, which is also real, which has not diminished, which has in fact been clarified by six months of fighting for him, by sixty-seven monitor readings and the scarf on the edge of the bed and the folder of documentation with his photograph at the center.
She thought: both things are true.
She thought: both things being true does not require anything of you.
She thought: you are going to hold the and also and continue.
She thought: Silas is going to hold his version and continue.
She thought: Jonas is going to come back.
She thought: and then you will see what the map looks like.
She turned over.
She slept.
In the morning she drove to Dr. Marr's office.
Silas was already there.
Of course he was.
They went in together.
You've reached the end of this chapter
