Jonas asked about Silas on a Tuesday.
Not obliquely — he asked directly, in the manner he had developed since waking up, the one that was more direct than before, shaped by nine months of understanding exactly how much time directness saved.
He said: "Tell me what it was like. With Silas. The honest version."
She was in the chair beside him. She had been reading aloud — one of the photography books, the one with the essay about what it meant to look at things seriously. She put it down.
She said: "Which part?"
He said: "The part you haven't said out loud."
She looked at him.
He looked back — the direct look, the one that knew things.
She said: "It was real. What I felt. I'm not going to pretend it wasn't."
He said: "I know."
She said: "And I chose. I was choosing the whole time, even when I wasn't saying it directly. I was always going toward you."
He said: "I know that too."
She said: "I felt—" She stopped. "I felt something, for Silas. Not the same as what I feel for you. Different category. But real."
He was quiet.
She said: "That's the honest version."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "Are you—"
He said: "I'm okay." He said it the way he said things now — clearly, without the performance of fine. "I'm actually okay. It doesn't—" He stopped, finding the words. "When you care about someone and someone else cares about them too, and the other person does right by both of them — that's not something to be not okay about."
She looked at him.
He said: "Silas did right by both of us."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "I knew for a long time. Since before you knew."
She said: "I know."
He said: "And I trust you. I've always trusted you."
She held his gaze.
She said: "I know."
He said: "Okay."
She said: "Okay."
He picked up the photography book and handed it back to her.
He said: "Keep reading."
She read.
The afternoon continued.
The light did what it did in the therapy room at this hour.
She read.
He listened.
She thought: this is what being trusted looks like.
She thought: this is what trust feels like from the other side.
She thought: I know where I am.
She thought: I am exactly here.
She read.
---
She told Jonas about the consulting work that evening.
She had been building something to show him — the full structure of it, the checklist system and the advisory board position and the developing partnership with Noa and the three clients she had seen since September.
He listened to all of it.
When she finished he said: "Can I help?"
She said: "I thought you were going to offer that."
He said: "You did research."
She said: "I know how you work."
He said: "What do you need?"
She said: "The visual component. What we talked about. But also — I've been thinking about documentation of the athletes themselves. The ones who use the checklist, the ones who have questions. Understanding what they need from the outside, not just from my technical perspective."
He said: "You want me to film them."
She said: "When they're willing. Not as evidence. As — the other kind."
He said: "The kind that stays."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "I can do that."
She said: "I know you can."
He said: "When?"
She said: "When Luka says you're ready for extended field work."
He said: "I'll ask Luka tomorrow."
She said: "Two months?"
He said: "Luka will say two months."
She said: "You've already asked him."
He said: "I asked about extended field work timelines."
She looked at him.
He said: "The phrasing was slightly different."
She laughed.
He smiled.
She held his hand.
She thought: we are building something.
She thought: together.
She thought: this is the shape.
She thought: yes.
She stayed until late.
She drove home.
She worked on the structure.
She slept.
She was here.
She was building exactly the right things.
They were real.
They were going to keep working.
She was glad.
---
She called Silas and told him about the conversation.
He listened.
When she finished he said: "He asked directly."
She said: "Yes."
He said: "How was it?"
She said: "Right. Everything about it was right."
He was quiet.
She said: "He said you did right by both of you."
Silas said: "I know he would say that."
She said: "Do you believe it?"
He was quiet for a moment. A real pause — considering rather than deflecting.
He said: "Yes. I think I do."
She said: "Good."
He said: "Yes."
A pause.
She said: "He wants to help with the consulting work. The visual documentation."
He said: "Of course he does."
She said: "He was going to offer whether I asked or not."
Silas said: "Yes. That's—" He paused. "That's Jonas."
She said: "Yes."
They were quiet for a moment.
She said: "Goodnight, Silas."
He said: "Goodnight."
She put the phone down.
She thought: right.
She thought: everything about it is right.
She thought: I know where I am.
She thought: I am exactly here.
She was.
---
In November, Jonas filmed his first client.
The client was the nineteen-year-old Maren had seen in September — the one who had not known she could ask so much. She had come back with the full sponsor package documentation, three separate binding models, questions about all of them.
Maren worked through the checklist with her.
Jonas documented.
Not intrusively — from a distance, with the small camera, the specific way he had always filmed: present without insisting on his presence, attentive without demanding attention.
At the end of the session the young woman looked at the camera and said: "What's that for?"
Jonas said: "Understanding."
She said: "Understanding what?"
He said: "What it looks like to know what you have a right to know."
She considered this. Then she said: "Is that what this is?"
Maren said: "Yes."
The young woman nodded.
She went.
Maren and Jonas stayed in the cabin.
He reviewed the footage.
She worked on the next version of the checklist.
After a while he said: "You're good at this."
She said: "I know."
He said: "No, I mean—" He turned the tablet toward her. "Watch."
She watched.
She watched herself explain a binding specification — technical language made accessible, the specific translation she had built over months of learning what riders at this level actually needed to understand. She watched herself notice when the young woman's comprehension shifted, when a concept landed versus when it hadn't yet.
She watched herself work.
He said: "You're not just explaining. You're reading her. Adjusting."
She said: "It's what I do with terrain."
He said: "Yes." He lowered the tablet. "It's the same skill."
She thought about this.
She thought about Silas saying: you pay attention to what's actually there.
She thought: I have been doing that.
She said: "Can I see the whole session?"
He said: "Yes."
She watched the whole session.
She thought: this is what the work looks like.
She thought: it is good.
She thought: I built this correctly.
She held his hand across the table.
She thought: we built this.
She thought: together.
She thought: yes.
She thought: this is the right shape.
It was.
---
Silas saw the footage three weeks later.
Jonas had edited the session down to four minutes and sent it to both Maren and Silas — the consulting session, the young rider, Maren explaining the checklist. He had sent it with a note: *for Silas specifically, because of the technical accuracy layer.*
Silas watched it twice.
He understood why Jonas had sent it to him specifically. The technical accuracy — the specific language Maren used, the way she described binding specifications in terms that a non-engineer could work with while retaining the precision that made the information actionable. He had spent four months building that language with her. He recognized it.
He sent Jonas a message: *The DIN explanation. She's using the temperature differential framing.*
Jonas: *I know. She said you taught her that.*
Silas: *She built it. I gave her the concept.*
Jonas: *Same thing.*
Silas: *No. She built it.*
Jonas: *You always say that.*
Silas: *It's always true.*
Jonas: *Fine. She built it. You gave her good materials.*
Silas thought about this.
He typed: *Yes. That's accurate.*
Jonas: *She's very good at this.*
Silas: *I know.*
Jonas: *You trained her well.*
Silas: *I gave her the structure. She built it.*
Jonas: *You're going to say that every time, aren't you.*
Silas: *Yes.*
He could almost hear Jonas laughing.
He put the phone down.
He watched the four minutes one more time.
He thought about the eight months at Ravenline — the specific technical work of building from what was already there, of finding the mechanism and letting her take it from there.
He thought: she took it.
He thought: she is still taking it.
He thought: that is what it looks like.
He thought: I'm glad I got to see it.
He put the phone down.
He went to the slope.
He worked with Petra on the second regional qualifier preparation.
He was here.
The terrain was known.
He was building what needed to be built.
That was enough.
That was more than enough.
He was glad.
---
December arrived in Nivora the way December always arrived — with the specific cold that preceded the real winter, the snow line moving steadily lower, the mountain committing to what it was going to be for the next four months.
Maren walked to the hospital in the early morning.
She had been doing this — walking, when the distance and the weather allowed. Something about the approach on foot rather than by car, the specific transition of arriving slowly, the mountain visible the whole way.
Jonas was awake when she arrived. He had been awake early, he said — his sleep was good now but sometimes he woke before six and used the time productively, reviewing footage, thinking about the next project.
He said: "Come look at this."
She came and looked.
He had found, in the older footage — the material from before White Arc, the archive of two years — a sequence she had not seen before. He and Maren on the Nivora training slope, a Tuesday afternoon, the light at exactly the angle of that hour. She was in the upper section, doing what she did.
She watched herself.
She said: "I'm managing the speed."
He said: "Yes. Pre-Ravenline."
She said: "It's visible from the outside."
He said: "Once you know what to look for."
She watched.
She said: "Show me the stage four footage."
He found it — not the official timing footage, the footage he had shot from the observation area, which he had attended as a registered film observer.
She watched stage four.
She watched herself in the upper section: committed, full, in conversation with the terrain.
She said: "That's different."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "Not just technically."
He said: "No. Something changed."
She thought about what had changed. About the four months at Ravenline and what they had built and what had been there underneath waiting to be built around.
She said: "I stopped managing."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "Silas—"
He said: "Yes."
She said: "He gave me the structure to stop managing."
He said: "Yes." A pause. "And then you won stage four."
She looked at the screen.
She thought: yes.
She thought: that is what the structure was for.
She thought: I built something with it.
She held his hand.
She thought: I know where I am.
She thought: I am here.
She thought: I have been getting here the whole time.
She was here.
She was exactly where she needed to be.
She thought: yes.
She was.
---
She told Jonas that evening.
He listened.
When she finished he said: "Good."
She said: "One word."
He said: "It's the right word."
She held his hand.
She thought: I know where I am.
She thought: I am exactly here.
She stayed until late.
She drove home.
She was here.
Everything was in its right place.
She was exactly where she needed to be.
